2013 Goals for St. John’s United Methodist Church Recommended by Church Council and Adopted at Charge Conference on December 4, 2012

Goal 1- We will develop a hospitality plan that is consistent and applies to all worship services by February 2013.

We will record/track the number of visitors at each service. Letters or emails will be sent by pastors to all visitors who leave their contact information in the first week after the visit. Each service will have in place trained: Greeters (persons who will greet and answer questions at doors) Ushers (persons who will answer questions and give bulletins/brochures in worship) Encouragers (persons who will intentionally welcome visitors once inside worship space by not

just greeting them, but introducing them to folks, and inviting them to Sunday school or meals/special events)

Responders (persons who will visit each visitor with bread/cookies in the first week after the visit) Hospitality Team will be formed for 2013, consisting of representatives from the above work groups and including at least one person from each worship service.

Church Council will review monthly.

Goal 2 - Every person in leadership (on Church Council) is in one ongoing small group class in 2013. Definition of ongoing small group: a group that includes prayer, devotion, and fellowship of about 12 people.

Marsha Findlay and Bill Porter will develop a survey to give to Church Council to share common interests and formulate a list of new small group possibilities. Church Council will review quarterly and monitor progress.

Goal 3 -We will continue to pay our apportionments in full and be recognized as a Third Mile Rainbow Covenant Church in 2013.

Church Council will conduct a quarterly review of apportionments and district asking contributions. Missions will give quarterly written reports to Church Council. The Center will give quarterly written reports to Church Council.

Goal 4 - All worship services will celebrate a “Change the World Weekend” in the summer of 2013.

We will begin with worship in the worship space, and then the worship attendees will engage in various opportunities for ministry. All age levels will be given appropriate opportunities. There will also be op-portunities for persons with limited mobility. Every member of the Church Council will be encouraged to provide leadership for that day.

Vision of the New Year “Athenians….when I arrived here the other day, I was fascinated with all the shrines I came across. And then I found one inscribed: To the God nobody knows. I’m here to introduce you to this God…the unknown is now known, and he is calling for a radical life change.” From Paul’s speech at Athens found in Acts 2:22-32 from The Message Several years ago, Steve (my husband) and I were very blessed to be part of a trip that re-traced Paul’s journey to Rome. One of our most significant moments took place in Athens. We took a late night walk. We saw and heard a bunch of people climbing to the top of this rocky hill, and we decided to check it out. It was actually tricky because we really had to rock climb to the top. For me it was a challenge, but I kept going. At first, I just wanted to get to the top like everybody else. I wondered what I would see. But after a few minutes of climbing, I just hoped I could find good hand holds and actually make it to the top. I didn’t really think about what was at the top, I just prayed I’d get there! And I kept going….because it was too late to go back down! Finally, we reached the top and – Wow! – it was well worth the effort. We beheld a breathtaking night time view of Athens. We sat there with the rest of the folk, and I felt wonder, inspiration, and a deep connection to God. The next day, Steve and I took a tour of the Acropolis in Athens and the tour guide had us look over to a rocky hill. It was the one we had climbed the night before. The guide explained that very hill was Mars Hill – the place where Paul made his speech about the identity of God long ago to the people of Athens as described in the Bible in the book of Acts. Some Athenians heard and embraced the vision of Paul’s words for a radical life change. Most did not. Many of us make resolutions that call for a radical life change as we live into the New Year. Sometimes we succeed. Very often, we fail. Sometimes obstacles make it hard to hold on to the vision we had at the beginning. There are times we just struggle to keep going. But if we persevere, we will discover wonder and find a deep connection to God who will energize and sustain us for all that is ahead of us. My prayer for all of us in 2013 is that we at St. John’s United Methodist Church will live and serve in such a way that leaves no doubt about how much we love our Savior who has changed us from the inside out. Peace and Goodwill, Rev. Anne

Thank you to everyone who had anything to do with the Children’s Ba-zaar. We think it was a success! We had about 150 kids, about the same as last year. They had a blast. We

had so many donations, but they really cleaned us out. That is a good thing. Now we need to start saving for next year. If you have a chance after Christmas, we need lots of large Christmas bags, Christmas decorations, or any small gifts for moms, dads, teachers, etc. We hope to have as many or more kids next year. Thanks for any help you can give us.

PRAYER AT ST. JOHN’S We all have our own times and styles of praying, but however we pray it is part of our lifeline to God!” Our Jesus Country and Living Faith! services are small, inti-mate, praying & caring groups. The prayer chain gets many requests from them. The services in the sanctuary are larger and more formal, but still there is a lot of con-cern and prayer. Prayer not only connects us with God but to each other. When we pray for others, they be-come known to us in a unique way.

The PRAYER BOOKMARK has been added to the weekly bulletin. If you or a family member wants to be lifted in prayer on the bookmark and/or prayer chain, please call the church office at 324-5278 or Janice Becker at 355-3981 and let us know of your wishes or fill out a prayer card in your service and state if you want the request to be on the prayer bookmark. It will be on the prayer chain which is more private and in-cludes a large variety of prayer concerns. It is important that you get permission to put the prayer request on the bookmark and/or chain as some people want their prayer needs to be between them and God. It is also ap-preciated when you let us know of changes in your prayer concern!

Many Thanks to St. John’s United Methodist Church for your special gift of the lovely poinsettia to us,. It is much appreciated and enjoyed. Thank you most sincerely —the size fits perfectly in my small quarters. I love it.

Dear St. John’s, thank you for the lovely poinsettia plant. It is such a nice size for my small quarters here. Thank you for remembering me. I do miss at-tending St. John’s very much. Thank you again.

The Lower family wishes to thank you all for your Prayers, Love and Support over the loss of Con-stance Lower who passed on 10-18-2012. As many of you are aware, Constance loved photography. As a way to honor her, her son Mel has set up the Constance Lower Memorial Website at

www.constancelower.com

The Lower family invites you all to view some of the many photos Constance has taken over the years.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. Words are not enough to express how wonderful it was to be with and see all of our friends from Christmas Con-certs past. Friday, December 14, 2012 was probably one of our best Cool Yule concerts to date.

We had a few funny moments (as we age we forget words and where we are on pages) but friends laugh through the tiny hiccups of life. You let us have fun, share joys, laugh and, best of all, do what we as a band love most – share the happiness music gives us with you.

Ray, Scott, Jeff, Ken, Elizabeth, Ezra, Jay and I want to thank each and everyone of you for attending the concert on Friday. And we especially want to thank Joyce, Alli-son and Evan Haack for helping set up, serve and clean up. The best roadies ever!

Finally, even though we are no longer the official Celebra-tion Band of St. John’s United Methodist Church, this church, its members and friends will always have a spe-cial place in our hearts.

On behalf of the entire band and their families we wish you all a wonderful and Merry Christmas. We hope to continue to see you around the church. Barbara Campagna

PIECES OF GRACE

With this note we start a new calendar year. The new year provides us with an opportunity to take stock in where we are, look at where we want to be, and start moving in that direction. Many people do this every year regarding their weight. They will decide they need to lose a few pounds, start a diet and start

working out at a gym. Every January there seems to be a surge of people working out at the YMCA. Then in February there are less and with each passing month there are less and less people working out. I do not think this is because everyone suddenly lost all of the weight that they planned to lose. I think it is because it takes time and energy to get in shape. It is not easy to do. It takes a commitment and determination. Getting in shape doesn’t just happen. The same thing happens with our goals as a church. We want more involvement, and deeper commitment from our congregation. We as a church make goals to help us get there, and then we work to get where we want to be. Our church leadership set goals around church attendance, stewardship, missions and evangelism. We are in a good place now, but we want to be in a better place next year at this time. Just like getting in shape, these goals will not just happen. We will have to make an effort throughout the year to get where we want to be. It will not just happen because we want it to happen, or even if we “need” it to happen. We need to roll up our sleeves and do what needs to be done, not waiting for the other guy to do it. If each of us does not take a piece of responsibility, not only will we be ten pounds more over weight, our church will not be where we want it to be.

Grace and Peace Ron

By the time you receive this, all that hustle and bustle of Christmas will be long forgotten. Our count for December was 378 items. This was a good count We received 82 cans of vegetables, 51 boxes of mac & cheese, 38 cans of soup, 18 cans of pudding, 14 cans of pasta/stew and 19 boxes/packages of ce-real. What a great variety. We also received many other items, and a big thanks to all of you who do-nated to the food pantry. Our final November count was 807 items. We were down from last year but, I look at it this way, any little bit helps and is very much appreciated. I am sure the families who received the food boxes from the Center were very pleased.

Now that winter is approaching, can soups and crackers along with hot chocolate will be appreciated. Don't forget the after school snacks for the children. Again, thank you all for a great year of donating to the Food Pantry, and may God Bless each and everyone of you.

Church Closing Information:

As adopted by the Staff-Parish Relations Committee: In the event of inclement weather, we at St John’s UMC will follow the Davenport Public Schools lead. If school is cancelled on a day, the church will be closed and all meetings and groups scheduled for the church that day will be cancelled. If the school system declares an early out, all activities from that point forward will be cancelled at the church. Once a cancellation takes effect, for the safety of all, all church activi-ties will be cancelled. We will not cancel weekend worship, but we encourage you to use your best judgment on those days. Your safety is of primary importance. Scheduled weddings or funerals will not be cancelled for weather. We will notify the local media as soon as we are aware of cancellations. We will also post notifications on our church website at www.stjohnsumc-dav.com.

TROOP 6 NEWS By Wanda Cover

We would like to welcome 4 new scouts: Gavin Cobine, Koby Dirk, Adam Ek-

strom, and Kevin Hill. These boys bridged November 13th from Cub Scout Pack 667 to our troop. For November’s outing we were tent camping at Eden Valley in Clinton County, IA, where the Friday night temperature dropped be-low 32 degrees, allowing the 9 scouts and 3 adults in attendance to earn the Polar Bear Winter Camping award. On Saturday we worked on compass skills. We also worked

with our new scouts on Totin’ Chip and fire building while the older scouts went for a hike. On Sunday we all went on a hike so the new scouts could cross the swinging

bridge. With the arrival of winter, December was the first of three cabin campouts we have planned. We visited Ingersoll Scout Reservation, London Mills. IL. While there we worked on require-

ments for rank advancement. Saturday morning we awoke to rain, so we used the time to work indoors on requirements. Later we were able to get outdoors for a hike to explore the camp.

At our weekly meetings we have been preparing for the up-coming Klondike Derby in January, an event we always enjoy. We continue to ask that you keep our troop in your thoughts and prayers. From the youth and adults of Troop 6, we wish you Merry Christ-mas and a Happy New Year.

Thank You to Mitzi Harris and all the Kids, Youth and Parents who helped and supported our Chil-dren’s Musical on Dec. 16th. The children came to Sunday School early from the beginning of November in order to learn the songs well. Over 40 “stocking sacks” were prepared as a treat to take home that day, for all the kids who came for practice! We didn’t usually have 40 at one time, but families showed an interest and the chil-dren were familiar with the music. Without that support, it would be diffi-cult to prepare a new musical each year. May your 2013 be filled with hope and peace in the Spirit of a new birth: Jesus.

Kids Wednesday evenings in Janu-ary are Costume Choir: Jan. 9th & 23rd; 4/5th Grade Youth: Jan. 16th & 30th. Both are from 5:30-6:30 and serve a light supper. Costume Choir is for K—5th.

St. John’s policy on “snow day” cancellations for activities at the church follows the Davenport School District closings. If school is cancelled for inclement weather, or is dismissed early for the same reason, the evening activities for Children, Youth and Adults are cancelled at church. Late starts are NOT a reason for cancelations here. Notification will also be on the website and on local TV sta-tions.

Next Children’s Council meeting will be Sunday, Jan. 13th at 11:00 in LL06. If you have any ques-tions about the work of our family ministry council, please call/email Beth.

Safe Sanctuary Training Online will be available soon; watch email for notification.

Nursery needs one more staff attendant. Call Beth if you would like to interview for the job on alternate Sundays:: 18 yrs or over.
