Ita Buttrose is the Australian of the year for 2013!! She was recognised for her outstanding career in media. Not only that she uses her national profile for raising the awareness for breast cancer and prostate cancer.

At 23 she was given the job as a
woman's editor at The Telegraph.
In 1971 she was promoted to
the founding editor of the new
woman's magazine called Cleo.

WHY DID HE BECOME YOUNG AUSTRALIAN OF
THE YEAR?
Akram Azimi became Young Australian of the Year
because he is a dedicated mentor to young
indigenous people. 13 years ago he left Afghanistan
to come and live in Australia, and he went from being
a refugee kid to become one of his school’s best
student. He is now at the University of Western
Australia studying law, science and arts.
ACHIEVEMENTSHe has topped the tertiary entrance exam in his class.
At the moment he is studying a triple major in university.
He helps young people in rural and remote Western Australia with
his leadership skills.
He co-founded a program to raise awareness about indigenous
issues in universities.
He has helped disadvantaged remote indigenous community of
Wyalkatchem.
He mentors a Special Olympic athlete to raise community
awareness of disability issues.

Professor Ian Maddocks became Senior
Australian of the year because he was a
passionate supporter for world peace and
a well known palliative care specialist.
Now he continues daily care for people
who are very sick.
ACHIEVEMENTS
In 1971 he became Foundation Dean of Medicine
at the University at Papua New Guinea.
He has worked in medical groups.
Ian has received an Australian Peace Medal.
He has improved the lives of people that need care.
He was the first president of the Australian and
New Zealand Society.

WHY SHE BECAME THE YOUNG AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR 2012
Marita Cheng became Young Australian of
the Year in 2012 because she demonstrated
vision in leadership and is dedicated to
encouraging young woman to be interested
in a career in engineering. She would like
to study for a Bachelor of Engineering and
Bachelor of Computer Science. She plans to
start a robotics company where she will
create robots that will do everyday tasks.
ACHIEVEMENTS
She founded Robo Gals in 2008 which is an international
student-run organisation that introduces young woman to
technology and engineering.
She changed the way girls see engineering and technology .
She has a Nancy Fairfax Churchill Fellowship, International
Youth Foundation, Youth ActionNet Fellowship and an Anita
Borg Change Agent Award.
She was a former panellist on ABC T.V’s news Inventors
program.
