Dear EUM Family,

Heartfelt thanks to the Congre-gation, O & H Bakery on Du-rand, Sheryl Meyer, Sue Bush and the volunteers who made the "Wassail and Cookie" event

a wonderful time of fellowship. Over 700 people

were served that day! With our united EUM family we are able to carry on our traditions and blessings of the Christmas Season and other ministries. The leftover cookies, juice and Wassail were shared with HALO participants.

Merry Christmas and may you all have a healthy, happy New Year in 2012.

The EUM Trading Post

Each month members and friends of EUM offer those things they no longer need as well as request items they now have use for. What do you have that's in your way or hasn't been used in 15 years? Are you wondering what to do with the old TV set you no longer need, the garden tools you no longer use? This is the place to offer such items for FREE to those in our congregation who could use them. All you need to do is let us know what you need or what you no longer need and we'll post it HERE along with the FREE Sign. Call Judy at 634-7616 for more information and listings. AVAILABLE: Is there a child in your family who might have fun collecting miniatures? I have an assortment of inexpensive ones and several printer’s type trays. Call Grandma Jean at 598-1065.

MISSION UPDATE Corinne Haase

Thirsty Land - Turkey

The Lord is bringing thirsty stu-dents to us! He is revealing him-self to students and He allows you

and me to be a part of it. Usually, we are initia-tors with our friends – in relationships and in spiritual conversations. But lately, it has been sweet to see God’s power as friends have pur-sued us and asked us questions about Jesus.

Dalia* invited me to drink muzlu süt (banana milk, which is one of my favorite drinks here!) at a café with her. She brought friends and we had a great time talking and laughing. In the middle of a conversation about shop-ping, they asked me if I go to church in this city because they want to go to a church. I told them about church, but I was so interested as to why they wanted to come to church. Some said they just wanted to learn about church and my religion. Emily* saw The Passion of the Christ a week earlier. She was troubled by how Jesus was treated and wants to learn why that happened to Jesus.

Dalia, Emily and their friend Isabelle* came to our weekly meet-ing where we watched The Gospel of John. The mira-cles Jesus did, like walking on water and feeding the five thou-sand, amazed them.

In Luke 5, Jesus forgave the sins of a paralytic and then healed the man. Please join with me in praying that the awe that these three have of Je-sus’ miracles would become faith in Jesus – who He claims to be and His authority to forgive.

As we prepare for and celebrate Christmas, let’s remember the hundreds of thousands of people affected by the earthquake in the East.

Many are living in tent villages without proper food and warmth. The Church in this area has been providing for both the physical and spiritual needs of the people. Since the earthquake, the number of believers has doubled! If you are in-terested in giving financially to help the Church serve the people around them, please let me know! With love and thanks, Corinne Haase [email protected]

How you can pray:

December 9-11 is our Christmas Celebra-

tion. University students from all over the country are coming to hear about the hope

we have in Jesus. Dalia, Emily, Isabelle,

and Nathan are coming with us. Please pray

that God would open their minds to under-stand the Gospel.

Eva is taking many of the same science

classes I took last year. Pray for opportuni-

ties to share about Jesus and the Gospel through studying biochemistry with her.

Pray for our team: for health and that God

would speak to us through Scripture and the

Spirit.

Dear EUM Parents,

The year, 2012, promises to be an excit-

ing and full year! Saturday, January 21 at

8:00 a.m. will be a great start to it with our

EUM Vision Meeting. This important vision

casting meeting will show the direction for

2012, and be the introduction of our new Fel-

lowship One check-in system. This system will

be used for all of our EUM babies, children, and teenagers. This system will help ensure

the safety of our children, and will be a quick

and easy way for parents to check their chil-

dren in to nursery, classes, and children's

programs. Older students will be able to

check themselves in for small groups and classes. It will also help accurately track our

numbers for classroom utilization. Training

will be held for our leaders, so a smooth tran-

sition will follow. All EUM teachers and lead-

ers should plan to be there. Please be sure to

save the date now for this important Saturday morning!

It is exciting to think about all that God will

do through EUM in 2012! Have happy and

blessed New Year!

TALK ABOUT THIS

• In the coming new year, what is one thing you would like to do to help you grow in your relationship with God?

• What is one thing you would like to

commit to doing this year? • What is something you are dreaming

about for this coming year? • What is something we can do as a

family to improve our communication together?

• Parents ask your teen: What is some-

thing I can do to parent you better this year?

Winter Retreats are Coming! During the months of January and February both our middle school and high school groups leave Racine for a weekend getaway known as Winter Retreat.

Our 6-8th graders will head off to Green Lake January 27-29 while the 9-12th graders will be gone Feb. 24-26 for Lake Geneva Youth Camp. Both groups will experience a weekend filled with lots of fun as they are also challenged to grow deeper in their relation-ship with the Lord.

The theme for Winter Retreat is “Catalyst.” Isaiah 26:8 says, “Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your truth, we wait eagerly for you. For your name and your re-nown is the desire of our souls.” We’ll explore this verse and it’s implications for our lives as we seek to know and trust Christ more.

Students can register today for Winter Retreat at www.eumchurch.com. The cost for winter retreats is $160 per person, but due to our Dessert Derby fund-raiser, students are able to go for $110 if they did not participate in the DD and only $80 each if they did participate in the DD.

Thank you to all of you who gave so generously at the Dessert Derby to enable us to reduce the cost of these retreats for so many of our EUM students.

THE VIEW

• One in five teens says they’ve purposely in-jured themselves at some time.

• An estimated one in every 200 teenage girls

cuts themselves regularly. Without treatment, this behavior often contin-ues into adulthood.

• In a study, most chronic

self-mutilators described their families as “full of angerQin which they were told to always be strong and prevented from ex-pressing their feelings.”

Standing on a Glass Faith There is an e-mail floating around called “Amazing Photos”. Some of them truly are! In this article are a couple of pics from a balcony on the 103rd floor of a building in Chicago. What makes it interesting, is that the

ENTIRE balcony is glass – even the floor.

Wow! How safe would you feel standing on that bal-cony? I love the picture of the little girl laying on it in complete safety. Her posture shows no trace of fear – only fascination. That is the essence of faith. Me? I could probably stand on it for a little while. However, if you stood next to me and jumped up and down I would be out of there so fast your head would spin! I have faithQ To a pointQ And if the little girl’s picture shows the es-

sence of faith, my fear shows the essence of doubt. Together, these two things show the es-sence of our struggle as Christians. We trust God to deliver us from pain and suffering, but we sometimes doubt when things get too scary. We trust him to love us, but doubt that love when life gets too hard. But Jesus calls us to stand on him. He calls us to trust him no matter what’s happening around him. How? We can remember the times he came through for us in past. We can listen to the sto-ries of others who God has delivered. We can talk to God about our fears. We can read his word and focus on his promises. However, it works best when we do all this before we step out onto the glass. We prepare for the tests of faith now. Then we can rest in him like this little girl when our trials come. God is good. He will never let you fall. Director of Congregational Care, John Fleming

December No 3rd Friday Fellowship

Where did you grow up? I grew up during the Great Depression in Zion, IL, second of six siblings in a divided Christian family – Mom being a

Lutheran, Dad a Methodist. Widespread influence of the Moody Bible Institute sprouted many non-denominational churches, and it was here that I ac-cepted Jesus Christ as my Savior at age thirteen.

Tell us about your family. I met my husband in Zion where he had relocated from his family’s ancestral farm in beautiful south central Missouri Ozarks, finding em-ployment at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station which was gearing up for entry into WW II. We had four children, two of whom live in Racine with their spouses (Barbara and Bill Pucci are members of EUM), a daugh-ter I lost five years ago, and a son. I have four adult grandchildren and they have seven children (Annelise and Will Pucci are two of these exceptional great-grandchildren). Before joining EUM in 2003 I had been a Baptist (SBC) for fifty-plus years. When an evangelis-tic outreach was launched with the slogan “a million more in ‘54” (Romans 10:14,15a) we responded. This took us to seminary (NOBTS), founding of Immanuel

Baptist Church (Racine), across the Pacific Ocean to Australia and across the Atlantic to Germany. When this military division (or regiment) was shipped out over-night we remained six months longer, touring Western Europe and British Isles in a retrofitted 15-passenger van. Returning to the US, we retired from the ministry, living and working in Toledo, OH, and eventually retiring to Springfield, MO, from where I moved to Racine in 1999.

Which service do you usually attend? I attend the 9:00 service and Crossbearers’ Sunday School Class.

What ministries are you involved in at EUM? I deliver altar flowers to our homebound, help Allison with the bulletins, and prepare and deliver a home-cooked meal for the Helping Hands ministry when asked. I attend Purl Girls and hope soon to be a “baby rocker” in the nursery.

What are your hobbies/interests/sports? I enjoy reading, knitting, walking and grubbing in the dirt (yard work). What don’t you know about me?

What else should we know about you? Hmmm, I was baptized in Lake Michigan in May (and oh, yes, I kissed the Blarney Stone in County Cork, Ire-land).

CELEBRATE RECOVERY is a Christ-centered, bibli-

cally-based, 12-step program designed to offer a time-tested and effective tool for recovery from our hurts, hab-its, compulsions, and addictions. It is a safe place where all who come can grow stronger in their personal relation-

ship with God and others by removing their masks, and by sharing their experiences, strengths, weaknesses, and hopes. Beginning February 9, 2012, EUM will be offering Celebrate Recovery every Thursday evening from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Meetings begin with worship and teaching/testimonies in a large group set-ting, and then break into small gender-specific groups. If you would like more information, or

would like to volunteer in this ministry, please contact Mike or Bethany Topel at 619-1948 or [email protected].

Book Reviews

Prayer has been a focus in my de-votional life during January for a number of years now. It took a per-sonal crisis for me to “get serious” about prayer. I began to wonder how it is we get God’s attention. Is

it better if we pray on our knees, in church, with the pastor, or some other way? It has been one of my most challenging goals to study prayer as well as actually practicing prayer. Several weeks ago Pas-tor handed out a format for practicing praying in the ACTS method: A (adoration) C (confession) T (thanksgiving) S (supplication). (If you missed the handout grab one from the information booth.)

My review is of a book with the acronym PAPA. It is the P (present), A (attend), P (purge), A (approach) method of praying. I would not say one method is better or best but I would say if you are interested in a deeper prayer life, if you are ready for a challenge, and if you are committed to praying every dayQthen try:

The PAPA Prayer by Larry Crabb. This book has

transformed my prayer life. Crabb challenges you to build a relationship with God in your prayer life. He states that this method of praying you will:

“Experience new power in petitionary prayer, receive unmistakable guidance from God, and discover that your soul has “ears” that can hear the voice of God.” AND MORE (page 79)

A STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE FROM THE UNITED METHODIST FOUNDATION

The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped. Proverbs 11:26-27 The Message

God grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to know it’s me. - Author Unknown January is the season for New Year’s resolutions. We want to start out the New Year on the “right foot,” taking care to improve ourselves and our habits. Getting out of debt and saving money are generally two of the top ten resolutions made each year. Cuts in income seem to be the norm these days, so how do we remain faithful and generous as we set priorities in the New Year? It seems counter-intuitive but it begins by giving. Generosity breeds a positive, “can-do” attitude in us. It’s good to say thank you, even in tough times. Therefore as you make moves toward financial freedom from debt, consider: Making the first payment from your check every week or month a “thank you” gift for the many blessings you’ve received. Save an equal amount in an emergency savings account you can use when you truly need to overspend your regular budget for medical needs, car repairs, house repairs or emergency family travel. Some folks find that giving 5% of their income to the church and saving another 5% each week or month in an emergency fund can be a helpful spiritual tool as they take responsibility for their finances. If you’d like help in meeting your financial New Year’s resolution, sign up today to attend the two-hour Freed Up From Debt Workshop sponsored by the Foundation on January 29th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm or Janu-ary 30th from 3:00 – 5:00 pm in Room 305 of the Conference Center in Sun Prairie. Cost is $8.00. Everyone is welcome! Call us to register and to get more information:

January, 2012 Finance Update

These figures reflect finances as of 11/30/11:

Year to date budget giving: $714,045, 89.4% of our $799,000 annual budget Year to date budget expenses: $711,408, 89.0% of the total budget Difference: $ (2,637)

November average weekly attendance: 574, a substantial new record (beating our previous November re-cord of 533)

Check out the bulletin for weekly updates under the “Stewardship” portion. The 2012 EUM budget ap-proved at Charge Conference is $908,846. The 2012 budget reflects a need to minister to the growing EUM community by increasing staff. As EUM has continued to grow in attendance (see attendance figures above), our staffing and program costs have continued to grow in relation.

We need you to be praying about your personal financial commitment to EUM and the ongoing ministries that money supports. As a member of the EUM family, the challenge for you in 2012 will be to strike a deli-cate balance between supporting existing ministries (budget giving) and growth for the future (Share the Dream). “Give him the glory he deserves! Bring your offering and come to worship him.” (Psalm 96:8)

Please pick up your 2012 giving envelopes, if you have not already done so. Do you know that by using the envelopes that have been assigned to you (instead of grabbing a pew envelope) you make it easier for our counting teams? These faithful volunteers stay after service every Sunday to count the tithes and offer-ings. When you use your assigned giving envelope, it takes them less time to count and gets them home to their families faster. If you are regularly giving online, you were not assigned giving envelopes. If you would like envelopes assigned to you, please call the office at 632-8381 or email Allison at [email protected].

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR COUNTING TEAM MEMBERS FOR A GREAT JOB IN 2011: Mark Amborn, Polly Amborn, Judy Brochhausen, Sue Bush, Dianne Drefahl, Dan Dunker, Terri Eppinger, Bob Haider, Carol Haider, Sonja Honore, Sandy Langenfeld, Amanda Meyers, Linda Meyers, Patricia Morrill, Dick Nielsen, Gloria Nielsen, !!!

I would like to thank two Finance members for their service through December, 2011: Kristen Chapman and Dan Dunker. Dan Dunker will continue to serve on one of our counting teams. Please join me in thanking them as they move on to other ministries.

I would like to welcome new chair Steve Palmer, as well as Jim Andreucci, Loren Sparks and Jason Von Bergen to the Finance committee, beginning this January. Thanks for joining the Finance Team!

Online giving is a great way to remain faithful to your financial commitment to EUM when you are away. Go to www.eumchurch.com/#/giving and give it a try!

EUM now offers a mobile version of our online giving page to make it easy for you to give any-time from your smart phone. Simply scan the image you see here using your phone’s Quick Response (QR) code reader!

Once you’ve decided to give electronically, continue to be part of the worship service by grabbing one of the “ONLINE GIVING” cards from the pew pocket and placing it in the offering plate.

We praise God for all of the financial blessings he has gifted EUM with!
