B’SGHETTI BASH 2009A GREAT SUCCESS
WOW! The 26th Annual B’Sghetti Bash was fabulous! The food was delicious, the grand prize raffl e and silent auction items were terrifi c, the classroom theme baskets were outstanding and the entire evening was the “best ever”. The children enjoyed the jumping castles, slide, the choo-choo train and the numerous pets from the Tanque Verde Community 4-H club. The enter-tainment from Two-EE the Clown was fabulous! A wonderful time was had by all. A special thank you to all of the parents, staff and other volun-teers who spent numerous hours volunteering. A special and heartfelt thank you to the Bash Committee: Jaime Gallick, LeeAat Dehnert, and Marisol Kenman. The grand prize winners were the Gaspers, one of our ECE families! We would also like to thank all the parents who contributed to the success of the event by helping with the numerous projects along the way and the day of the event. We couldn’t have done it without all of your support!
See page 13 for a complete list of silent auction and door prize donors.

Four-time Tony Award-winner, Broadway leg-end and fi lm star Harvey Fierstein stars as Tevye, the iconic milkman in the North American tour of Fiddler on the Roof. Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, Fid-dler on the Roof has captured the hearts of people all over the world with its univer-sal appeal and timeless message. In addition to thousands of pro-ductions worldwide, Fiddler on the Roof has been revived four times for the Broadway stage. Forty-fi ve years and more than a generation lat-er, audiences can take heart as they experience the tradition in great musical theatre. Even to-day, Fiddler on the Roof is as relevant as ever.
Please note: Chaim Topol was originally announced as the star of this tour, but was replaced
by Harvey Fierstein due to injury.

Both Lectures at the Tucson Festival of Books
Sponsored in part by Tucson Pima Arts Council
Benyamin Cohen March 14 • 1 p.m. Tucson Festival of Books at UA Integrated Learn-ing CenterBook signing after at the TJCC/PJ Library table
During his year-long ex-ploration, Cohen sees the best and the worst of Christianity – from mega churches to storefront churches; from crass commercialization of reli-gion to the simple, moving faith of the humble believer; from the profound to the profane to the just plain laughable. Throughout, he keeps an open heart and mind, a good sense of humor, and takes what he learns from Christianity to refl ect on his own faith and relation-ship to God.

A former Seinfeld writer, Leifer is a 52-year-old lesbian Jew-ish stand-up comedian from Long Island. Golfi ng for Charity
On November 8 Jason Apodaca and Luke Avants from Sports & Wellness along with Amy Merkel and Cathy Baldwin from the Jewish Federation competed in a Putt-Putt Tournament for youth charity. This opportunity was made available through the generosity of Board member Tom Warne. The event was run by the Glassman Foundation and was a huge success. The group fi nished fi fth out of 32 teams and had a blast. What a great experience and we are very happy to have had them represent the Tucson Jewish Community Center as a whole.
Healthy Members at the J:
A Message from Ken Light
I know that after the fi rst of the year, many of us make a new year’s resolution to “get in shape”, lose a few pounds, or otherwise generally improve our health and well being.
A couple of months ago I asked our staff and Board members to share with me how they “walk the talk” with regard to the wellness part of our mission. For years we have embraced a wellness philosophy prompted by the belief that if we are not a well people, and that means physically, mentally, socially, psychologically, and emotionally well, we will not be able to accomplish any of the rest of our mission. My intent in asking the question was to gain examples I could share with you of how our leadership, both staff and volunteers alike, are setting a model for others to follow in this regard. What I was not prepared for was the overwhelming response I received! Nearly 80% of our Board of Directors and 61% of our key staff shared with me their personal examples of wellness in their lifestyles.
We have hard core athletes among us, from our own Board Chair and another Board member who are “Ironman Triathletes”; to a Board member who runs twice a week, swims twice a week, bikes twice a week, and lifts weights; to a staff member who lost 40 pounds and “6-8 inches on my waist”, quit smoking and started eating healthy to complement his 35-minute cardio workout fi ve days a week. A number of respondents commented on the attention being paid to a healthy diet as well. There are many more examples too numerous to mention here at this time but I will be profi ling some of these great leadership examples in the months to come with the hope of encouraging, motivating, and involving you in your own personal plan of self-improved wellness.
We’re here to help! The J provides many exercise, diet, and personal training programs to assist you in setting and reaching your goals. We don’t need to be star athletes to improve our well-being and in the paraphrased words of Anne Frank, “….no one need wait a single day to begin to improve (themselves and) the world….” Please stop any of our professional staff and see how we can help. Also, watch future issues of Center View for some specifi c examples that are sure to excite and entice you!

The TJCC has been my home for the past 20 years. Starting in ECE, my years at the JCC have been filled with enriching activities, a sense of community, and friendships that have lasted to this day. I have been through almost every program the JCC has to offer from kindergarten, summer camp, swimming lessons, basketball, BBYO and so much more. Now I continue my 20-year streak working at the summer camp for the last five years, and running the JCC’s amazing teen youth lounge. The

people I have met here still mean the world to me. I still see staff that took care of me when I was young, and they are always smiling, with arms open for hugs. I even met my current business partner at the JCC, over 16 years ago (the other guy in the picture from our fourth birthday at the JCC). The JCC has been my “home away from home” for the last twenty years, and it will continue to be my home through the people, my memories, and even the very building itself.

TributesDo you know someone celebrating a wedding, special birthday, bris, b’nai mitzvah, graduation, or other special achievement? Still need to find a gift? Is the gift registry sold out? Save yourself the stress of searching for the perfect gift and honor them with a tribute to the Tucson JCC. Tributes are a great way to honor your friends and family and their simchas while supporting the JCC. Tribute gifts start at $18 and can be made in any amount. You can designate your funds to an area that represents you or the honoree. A card with your personal message will be sent to the honoree. Tributes can be made at the JCC Welcome Desk or online at www.tucsonjcc.org. For more information, please contact Julie at x243 or [email protected].
