3. PasswordWhen the web browser asks for your password, you should mostly use your own personal loginid and password. However, when you are to publish a reply which an expert has written in "Ask the expert here", then you must log in with the password of this expert, in order to have the answer published under that name.

Loggin in to the computers (not web browsers) at the home of Jacob and Gunborg Palme usually is done with the loginname "jpalme" and the password "o".

Most pages contain only simple HTML. If you find that a page contains too complex HTML, you might get an HTML expert to help with translation of that particular page.

If you look at the HTML code, you can see that it consists of plain text and HTML commands. HTML commands start with "<" and end with ">". The main principle for translating HTML is that only the plain text, not the HTML

5. Finding FAQs to translate

1.3. Finding FAQs which are and which are not translated.

Go to the table tool at

http://web4health.info/eu/kom/29761;login Fill in the form as follows:

where in languages you indicate the two languages you want to translate between, for example English (en) and Dutch (nl) in the example above.

Click on

Wait five mintes and then click on again. After yet a few minutes,

you will then get a table which looks something like this (the example below is for translation betweeen English (en) and German (de).

In the table example above, you can see that the first two FAQs in the table are only available in English, and thus need translation to German, while the second and third FAQs both have a German translation. The number after “de:” in the “Body” column indicates the number of characters in the German translation.File name: document.doc Latest change: 8/1/2006 05:16:00 PM

Warning: There is a bug, which means that you will not get any response to this command the first time you try it. Wait five minutes, and try again. Then it will work.

Click on the name of the FAQ under “Title” in the table above to get to an FAQ to translate.

1.4. Finding most popular FAQs

The above method will help you find which FAQs have not been translated, but not tell you which are most important to translate. To find which FAQs are most important to translate, you can go to http://web4health.info/webalizer-w4h/en/index.html and

click on the name of previous month. In the result you get, there is a table with the title “Top 1000 of 12137 Total URLs˝. The items begining with /en/answers/ in this list are the most popular FAQs in English.

If you click on a URL in the list produced in this way, you will see this page as it is shown to ordinary Web4Health users. At the very bottom of the FAQ, you see something like this:

ed-pictures • Copyright 2003-2006 Web4Health

Here, “ed-pictures” is the short-name (internal name) of the FAQ. Click on this, in order to get to the internal representation of this FAQ, to be able to translate it.

6. Translating FAQs Locate an FAQ to translate, either as described above or, if you have the

short name of the FAQ, use the web address:

http://web4health.info/eu/kom/ed-causes-culture;lang=enwhere ed-causes-culture is the short-name (internal name) of the FAQ you want to translate.

When you have located the FAQ, it will look something like this:

Pull down the menu to the name of the language you want to translate to.

l then get a window which looks like this:

File name: document.doc Latest change: 8/1/2006 05:16:00 PMPage 8

Page 9: Jacob Palme - Web4Healthweb4health.info/en/aux/kompendier/Translator-Compendium... · Web viewAfter yet a few minutes, you will then get a table which looks something like this (the

You can then see the English text you are translating from in the left column, and the Dutch text you are translating to in the right column. Fill in the Dutch translation in the right column. Preserve the HTML markup (commands like <p>, etc.) from the English original text, only translate the text outside of HTML markup.

Note 1: When you get to this window, a Dutch translation made by Systran is shown in the right column. If you want to, you can use this as a basis for your translation. If you do not want this, click in the right window, give the command Ctrl-A (on Macintosh: Command-A) and push the Delete key to delete the Systran translation.

Note 2: You can also, if you so wish, go to the left column, click in the field to translate, give the command Ctrl-A (on Macintosh Command-A) to select all the text, and then give the command Ctrl-C (on Macintosh Command-C) to copy the English text, then go to the rightmost column, give the command Ctrl-A (on Macintosh Command-A), and then the command Ctrl-V (on Macintosh Command-V). You have then pasted the English original into the rightmost window, and can enter the translation by modifying the English original. The advantage with doing this is that all HTML markup, which is to be unchanged, will automatically be moved to the right column.

Note 3: The rightmost column contains a number of different fields. Treat them as follows:

Field name What to do with it

Language Never translate

Title Always translate. Try to choose words which a person using a search engine might use to search for this page. For example, “Child Sexual Abuse Effects” is a good title, because many people use it when asking queries to search engines. “Trauma experienced by children after sexual encounters” is a very bad title, because no one will ever type that query to a search engine.

Question Always translate. Try to include the title somewhere in the question. For example, if the title is “Child Sexual Abuse Effects” then the question might be “Describe child sexual abuse effects”. The reason for this is that if

the search phrase is repeated both in the title and in the text, search engines will give priority to this page.

Identifier Never translate! Important!

Date-created, Date-last-modified Need not be translated.

Body Always translate.

Author Translate.

Sources, references Not so important to translate this.

Required, Priority, Optional, Forbidden Dont't translate these fields to Greek or Finnish! For other languages, these fields need to be translated in a special way, with knowledge of how the natural language question-answering system works. If you do not know this, leave them blank. Remove the Systran translation.

Not desired, Limit Need not be translated.

Meta-description Always translate. Important! Should give a good short 2-5 line summary of the page.

Meta-keywords Good if you translate this, but not highly important. Try to add different synonyms in the target language.

Contact, Discuss-this, Ask-an-expert Need not be translated. This field is not used.

Notes Need not be translated.

When you are ready with a translation, push the button

If you want to take a break, push When you restart the translation at a later time, locate the English version again and pull down the

menu, you will then see your half-finished translation in the right-most column. It is also suitable to do this now and then, when working on a large translation, so that your work does not disappear if the computer crashes.

will also make the translation available to ordinary visitors to our web site.

7. Translation of Menus

The body of menus (like the example shown above) are difficult to translate. I usually do it in the following way:

I click in the Body area of the English original, give the command ctrl-A (on Macintosh Command-A). Then I move to Microsoft Word or some other text editor) and give the command ctrl-V (on Macintosh Command-V). I then change the settings in Microsoft Word to get very long lines, for example by changing the font size to “5”. You will still be able to read the text, if you use the zoom command in Microsoft Word with a large enough value.

For example, the menu above will look like this in Word:<TABLE width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" CELLPADDING=2 class=padded><TR><TD CLASS=padded valign="top">

<DIV CLASS="linkpara">Different Kinds of Phobias (Fears)</div><DIV class=linklist><a href="phobia-dia-social.htm">Social phobia</a> <img src="/images/small-ball.gif" width="6" HEIGHT="6"><a href="bipolar-social.htm">Cannot talk to people</a> <img src="/images/small-ball.gif" width="6" HEIGHT="6"><a href="ed-dia-weight-phobia.htm">Weight phobia</a> <img src="/images/small-ball.gif" width="6" HEIGHT="6"><a href="phobia-paruresis.htm">Fear to use public toilets</a></div></td><TD CLASS=padded valign="top"><DIV CLASS="linkpara">Causes</div><DIV class=linklist><a href="ed-psy-self-esteem.htm">Low self-esteem</a> <img src="/images/small-ball.gif" width="6" HEIGHT="6"><a href="ed-psy-anxiety.htm">Suppressed feelings</a> <img src="/images/small-ball.gif" width="6" HEIGHT="6"><a href="sleep-hypna-halluc.htm">Dreams</a> <img src="/images/small-ball.gif" width="6" HEIGHT="6"><A HREF="anx-first-panic-attack.htm">Phobia and anxiety</a> <IMG SRC="/images/small-ball.gif" WIDTH="6" HEIGHT="6"><a href="child-trauma-symptoms.htm">Trauma</a></div></td><TD CLASS=padded valign="top"><DIV CLASS="linkpara">Incidence</div><DIV class=linklist><a href="anx-prev-gen.htm">How many people suffer from phobia</a></div></td><TD CLASS=padded valign="top"><DIV CLASS="linkpara">Treatment</div><DIV class=linklist><a href="phobia-treat-snake.htm">Snake phobia as an example of the treatment of phobia</a> <img src="/images/small-ball.gif" width="6" HEIGHT="6"><a href="bio-ssri-indication.htm">Medicines</a> <IMG SRC="/images/small-ball.gif" WIDTH="6" HEIGHT="6" ALT="separator"><a href=http://www.phobialist.com/treat.html target="_blank"> More about the treatment of phobia (external link)</div>

<DIV CLASS="linkpara"><A HREF="project-all-menus.htm">All Web4Health menus</a></div></td></tr></table></a>

After having done this, most of the links in the menu will occupy only one line in the editing window, which makes translation much easier.
