JACKO’S JOURNAL DISTRICT 201Q1 NEWSLETTER – Vol 8, February 2016-17

Welcome to February’s Journal.January was big for a lot of clubs who celebrate Australia Day and those who hold Citizenship Ceremonies. I must saycongratulations to all Lions who received awards on Australia Day.

I must congratulate my own club Kingscliff as they were awarded along with two other organisations the “CommunityEvent of the Year”. This was for the 2016 District Convention at Kingscliff High School.

Except for Australia Day most clubs have been in holiday mode and are now getting back into the fold with Lions and Youth of the Year is just around the corner. I hope most clubs would be looking for contestants if they haven’t already organised them.

I must congratulate the clubs in the District who supported PDG Merv Ferguson in his challenge to get Gabby a walker. I can now say that this was achieved and Gabby is enjoying her walker.

I hope by now all clubs are gearing up for our “Lions Awareness Day” on Saturday 4th March. If you need any guidancewith this day please contact John Clark from Robina Lions on 0407 758 777. This is your opportunity to showcase whatyour club does for your community and you never know you may get some new members.

It was sad to receive the message that Lion Eddie Atherton from the Beaudesert Lions club had passed on after losing hisbattle with that dreaded disease cancer. To Sue and family, Denise and I pass on our condolences as all Lions in thedistrict do.

I have also passed on to Lorraine and David McKenzie our thoughts and best wishes as Lorraine’s father is seriously ill inhospital in New Zealand.

I have just received the news that PDG Ray Phippard has passed away. Ray has done so much for the district and will besorely missed. To Beryl and family our thoughts are with you all.

I must apologise to members for this report being late as Denise and I have been in Sydney forthe Council of Governors Meeting and then on the Central Coast visiting a relative who isbattling a terminal disease.

In closing, may I say to all members if someone in your family or club is not well or doing it abit tough, please let our Welfare Officers know.

In the north Paula Davoren Tele: (07) 3423 1421 or in the south Jennafer Perkins Tele: 0427 788 119.

AUSTRALIA DAY - WHAT IF ?Sacre Bleu! Commer allez vou? Pepe le Pew . . . C’set moi, Gregory Le Grande, practising my French, to see how I would have sounded had history takenanother course.

As well as the French sailor La Perouse being nearby when Capt. Arthur Phillip struck the British Flag in Aussie soil in 1788, more evidence is surfacing wecould well have been colonised by France.

An object found on Dirk Hartog Island in WA has been authenticated as a 1766 French coin believed to have been buried with another coin and a writtendeclaration of French sovereignty!

Stonez-vou les crows, we could have been a nation of Les Petite Battleurs Aussie.Just think, you’d be standing at Le Footbal Finale Grande between Boulogne-Sur-Mer Tigers and Joan of Arc Magpies, washing down a Vingt-et-Quarte oie witha tinny of Le Bitter du Victor Hugo. No beanie for you, mon frère, rather a beret with a rosette. And what are you smoking? Winny Blues? Non, non, monsieur,Gauloises, sil vous plait. Imagine, La Bathurst Un Thousande won by Pierre Le Brock in a V8 Citroen 2CV.

Consider the implications of coastal bowls club members having to swap their woods for steel balls, and that nuclear testing would have truly been in our ownback yard.

And, quelle horreure, no Test Cricket! There could have been some advantages: Nice cheap domestic plonk, lovely patisserie shops, and the ability to resolve all problems with an enigmatic shrug. And discussions on the republic, would have been somewhat more dynamic than we have witnessed thus far. . .

So far, the second coin and ownership declaration have not been unearthed, but researchers believe it somewhere on Dirk Hartog Island and will be found oneday.

Hang on. Dirk Hartog? We could well have been Dutch! Or Portuguese. Or even Chinese. Above all, what about the people who were here for 40000 years in thefirst place?

Ne comez-vou pas le raw prawn avec moi, Gregory . . .

HAPPY NEW YEAR. We start of our year with the loss of two very hard working Lions from our district PDG Ray Phippard & Lion Eddie Atherton our sincere condolences go to bothfamilies. These men will be sadly missed by Lions all over Australia.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Musk Madness MonthMusk Madness Month - It’s here again - “Musk Madness Month” is being held in March, whereby clubs are encouraged to utilise the Lions Musk Lollies at all theirfunctions, BBQ’s and Lions meetings. Not only spreading the word about Breast Cancer Awareness, but also supporting our Lions Musk Lollies at the same time –and hey, they do taste good. I challenge Clubs to see how they can use them in different and unique ways, and then tell me about their “Musk Madness” ideas. Let’sget creative and spread the word about Breast Cancer Awareness. A suggestion to Clubs is to do a “Musks in the Jar” guessing competition – all they have to do isget a jar and their guests pay a nominal fee to guess how many lollies are in the jar. They can then have the jar of lollies and a small token gift as the prize. They willbe amazed at some of the guesses their guests will make. Please contact me if you or your Club need more information on how to run this idea. It’s so simple, and somuch fun...

Have you raised funds for Breast Cancer Awareness ? - Time is running out and the end of this Lions year is fast approaching. Has your Lions Club held a BreastCancer Awareness function, a Pink Dinner or a Pink Raffle – and haven’t yet forwarded on the funds raised ? – Well now is the time to send in the funds so that theycan count towards the end total of funds raised for this much needed cause – and to help us reach our “goal” grand total of monies raised. We are so close andwould love some more help to reach the goal. Please consider sending in your funds raised now – cheques to be made out to : “Lions District 201Q1” – and postedto 10 Shapcott Place, Runcorn QLD 4113

Breast Cancer Cookbook – There are still copies of the 3rd volume of the Breast Cancer “Breast Wishes” Pink Cookbook available – contact me on how to get acopy or two…. still only $ 10.00 – with full proceeds to the Breast Cancer cause.

With Christmas over, the Lions Clubs Christmas Cakes selling season has finished for most clubs. Apart, that is, for those continuing during the year to market ourLions Mini Cakes.

It is a bit disappointing to note that for this 2016/17 year, Q1 District cakes orders have dropped from 3,890 cartons last year, to only 3,752 this year. This is a dropof 148 cartons.

As the costs of cakes did not increase, it would be interesting to know why such a substantial drop in club orders.

Urgent Note:- I have received a list of outstanding club payments for cakes; 37 clubs in all; with an outstanding amount of $161,474 as of the 9th.Jan.2017.

I understand that by now most of these clubs would have made their payments, but remember; ALL PAYMENTS MUST BE MADE BY THE 31st.January 2017.Thank you to the 10 Club Cakes Chairmen (of our 80 plus clubs) that sent me their Club Cakes Chairmen Information Sheet. These details certainly make my jobeasier when trying to locate clubs for potential customers.

Lions Mints sales have also dropped off which is a shame as they provide a 100% sales profits on the purchase costs of same. With the added new product “ SugarFree Peppermint” additional markets of e.g. Doctors Surgeries/ Dental Surgeries should now be available. Worth checking out?

This year’s Youth Exchange Program for participants from District Q1. Travelling to Europe, USA and New Zealand has now concluded.

All 5 participants have returned home safely with many exciting and interesting stories to tell. Many of these stories have been shared via Face book over theweeks of their experience, with great photos attached.

Clubs should now be considering having these youths attending their meeting to share their experiences and to thank you for your support.

Thank you to those clubs who participated in this great Youth Program. Perhaps their experiences will encourage more clubs to become involved later this year.

Any clubs who require information and details of this program are invited to contact me.

Fire Poster Contest - ‘Fire Safety in the Home’It’s that time of the year again – when fires dominate our news and it is time for Lions Clubs to consider having your local schools participate in the Fire PosterContest so that the students in Grade 4 have a complete understanding of what to do if there is a fire at their house. All Lions Clubs in Q1 (NSW included) can enter this contest.

Encourage your local school to contact the local Fire Brigade and have the Firemen come to talk to the Grade 4 students on Fire Safety in the Home. Once theOfficers have talked to the students they can then prepare a poster showing how they understand what to do in case of a fire at home. The posters can be preparedon A3 size paper and have illustrations and wording to show what to do in an emergency.

More details on dates for entries to be sent in will be in advised but contacting your schools early in the year so that the contest can be put into the school curriculumis a good start.

Peace Poster Contest - ‘The Future of Peace’It's the 30th anniversary of the Lions Peace Poster Contest! To celebrate, we redesigned our Peace Poster kits. Inviteyoung artists in your communities to submit a poster design that expresses our theme, "The Future of Peace." Thecontest is a great way to connect with your community and encourage youth to express their vision of peace.

Children aged 11–13 are eligible to participate. All you need to do to unlock a child's creativity is purchase a PeacePoster kit from club supplies. Kits will be available for purchase from Newcastle at the end of February.

Talk to your schools about putting the Peace Poster Contest into their curriculum so their students can participate inthis worldwide contest.

2016 Peace Poster WinnerUnfortunately the announcement of the winner of the 2016 Peace Poster Contest for Q1 was not notified to all clubs.

The winning entry came from Algester Parkinson Lions Club (Algester State School) andis pictured here. The entry went on to the National Chairman for the next round ofjudging and the national winner will be announced very soon.

9 MILLION DOLLARS TO GO!!LCIF has raised $21 million US towards its target of $30 million US with 5 months to go before the end of this campaign.

If LCIF, through the support of Lions Clubs around the world, raises the magic sum of US$30 million, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation or the U.K. Government’sDepartment of International Development will match it dollar for dollar. It would be a real achievement if the opportunity to obtain the matching $30M is reached. That means that US$60M is able to be used by Lions Clubs International Foundation in its endeavours to eradicate this disease.

In Australia, individual Lions and their Clubs may make a donation to this worthy cause. Donations to the LCI/LCIF “One Shot, One Life – Lions Measles Initiative” arerequested by 31st May, 2017.

Each vaccine costs about $1, so every Lions dollar saves a child’s life. In fact, every Lions dollar with the matching dollar saves 2 children’s lives. Lions havevaccinated almost 600 million children in Africa and Asia.

In these areas of the world, local Lions organise rural villagers to bring their children and babies to the medical centres to receive the life-saving vaccination. LionsLeaders also work with the country’s health minister and officials to ensure an ongoing immunisation program is implemented for the future benefit of the countrieshealth service and communities.

When Lions first became involved in the “One Shot, One Life – Lions Measles Initiative” over 450 people, mostly children under 5 years of age, died every day frommeasles and rubella. Many survivors experienced complications like blindness, hearing loss and brain damage. With Lions involvement the number of daily deathshas been reduced to 330. It is still too many, but what Lions do in this initiative does work!

Send your donations to your District Cabinet Treasurer or you can now donate directly on-line by visiting www.lcif.orgPDG Rob Johnson – Lions Clubs International Foundation & Australian Lions Foundation District Coordinator8 Cavendish Pl Sunnybank Hills Qld 4109 Email: [email protected] – PH: (H) 07 3272 4649 (M) 0412 285 618

RUNAWAY BAY LIONS WRAPS THE LOVE FOR SAILABILITY GOLD COAST Imagine the thrill of sailing for people who can feel & hear but have no sight, or of sailing a boat at speed yet they cannot walk or where deafness does not matter.Sailability is a true community non-profit organisation whose principal purpose is to facilitate sailing and boating for people of all ages with mental & physicaldisability.

Runaway Bay Lions Club wrapped the love at Christmas in support of Sailability. With the support of Runaway Bay Centre, Runaway Bay Lions Club, in conjunctionwith the Zonta Club of Paradise Point, raised funds by undertaking a gift wrapping service at Runaway Bay Centre during the two weeks prior to Christmas.

Sailability believe in making the impossible happen and with the help of approximately 50 volunteers every Tuesday they are able to provide people with disabilitiesthe opportunity to make their dreams of freedom on the water a reality.

The sport of sailing has given added meaning to the words freedom & fun for a person with diminished capabilities be they physical, intellectual or both. They see80-100 clients every week come back from there sail with the biggest smiles on their faces that only warm your heart.

Runaway Bay Lions Club was pleased to put a little extra wind in the sails of this wonderful community group by presenting Sailability with a cheque for $5,000recently. This is addition to the $2,000 Runaway Bay Lions presented last year.

The community spirit of the management, traders and shopping public at Runaway Bay Centre has produced yet another successful outcome from the Christmas giftwrapping. As is the case with all Lions projects, every single cent raised from the public is returned to the community

stuffed toy horse for a Lions Melbourne Cup eventIf any Lions Club would like this large stuffed toy horse for a Lions Melbourne Cup event – it was donated to me for aLions Club that holds a “big” Melbourne Cup function, and one that raises money for a specific cause. It is just over 60cm tall at the head end.

So if there is a Lions Club that fits in with this, and would like the horse, if they could email me and we can work it out.The Lions Club would be responsible for arranging collection of the horse from me at home, work or at a CabinetMeeting.

There is only one available, so it would be “first in” who sends an email.

On the Lighter SideWhen people say, “Stop living in the past,” my thought in turn is, “But the music was so much better then.”

Some day us old folks will use cursive writing as a secret code.

Ban pre-shredded cheese – make Australia grate again!

A Lion reminiscesA few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small country town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchantingnewcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mum taught megood from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger...he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries andcomedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predictthe future! He took my family to the first major Rugby League game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn'tseem to mind.

Sometimes, Mum would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace andquiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honour them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home...Not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my motherblush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol. But the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly andpipes distinguished.

He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he wasseldom rebuked.... And NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if youcould walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.

His name?.... .. . We just call him 'TV.' He has a wife now....We call her 'Computer.'
