INTR

ODUCTION

It has been a very busy and exciting year at Jackdaws. I would liketo take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of you whosupported our “Memories of Maureen” campaign which so far hasraised £15,000, and I hope that those of you who were able to cometo the finale gala at St Georges in October enjoyed it as much aswe did. The final rousing chorus of Handel’s Hallelujah sung byeveryone present from staff to volunteers, the Songbirds, our YoungArtists and colleagues to the audience members (for whom it wasa total surprise!). You all did Maureen and Jackdaws proud!

2013 happens to be the20th anniversary of thefounding of Jackdaws

which seems fitting as we take steps towards a new and sustainable future. So we arelaunching a new campaign to show the depth and breadth of support there is for Jackdaws,“20 Jackdaws”. We will be asking you, our tutors, young artists, our local community and oursupporters to sign a statement noting your support of Jackdaws and all of the work weundertake to fulfil our mission of Enabling Creative Expression by Bringing Music to Life. So look out for the “Twenty Jackdaws” display when you come to visit us and at our events, and help us show the world why Jackdaws is so important. If all of our participants, tutorsand colleagues were also to donate a one off gift of £20 to commemorate this importantanniversary we would be well on the way to raising the £40,000 needed to refurbish our premises and make it a wonderful space for music and creativity for the next 20 years! You can make a donation on our new justgiving page, www.justgiving.com/jackdaws I know times are very tight for everyone but like most small charities, we are reliant on our supporters to stay afloat.

I would also like to welcome the new tutors we have joining us this year and encourage youto take the plunge and give one of them a whirl, they are all very excited about their courses.Did you know that a course is not viable unless it is at least two thirds full and only contributesto our overall running costs if it is full? So please spread the word and help us continue being able to invite musicians of this calibre to come and share their experience and passionwith you.

sat 23 Feb 10am-3.30pm“Brahms” -The solo piano & chamber music-Steven ElliotCourse No. 3031. Fee £40Brahms has left us with well over 10 hours ofchamber music, spread fairly evenly overvarious combinations of instruments; stringquartets, string quintets-even sextets-andcombinations involving his own instrument, the piano, and an instrument whose beautyand full capability was revealed to him late inlife- the clarinet. There are also three sonatasfor violin and two for cello, all wonderful. Andyet what is not known is just how muchBrahms destroyed, such was his desire toreveal only the best of himself. Despite hismastery of large scale forms most of his pianomusic is of shorter pieces with titles such asballade, rhapsody and intermezzo, and thesefeature strongly in his later piano music whichis dense in texture but sublime in effect.During the day we will sample this music, much of which may be familiar to thoseattending, and place it in its biographicalcontext.

Fri 5 - sun 7 July Any Prelude & Fugue Kenneth van Barthold Course No. 3047Level: Advanced. Fee £180The 48 Preludes and Fugues present a deep insight into the temperament andcompositional style of J.S.Bach. They are amicrocosm of his usage of keys, different stylesof writing and characterisation. They werewritten more than twenty years apart and, ashappens with many of us, he became morecomplex with age. This is surely the reason why, with few exceptions, all the really well knownones are in the first book. Please choose onefrom either book for the course and don’t bedeterred by book.2. There is some wonderfulmusic in there and maybe it would be good toplay a Prelude from Book 2 rather than a rehashfrom book 1 that has been played to death! While it would be preferable to bring aparticular Prelude and Fugue better a preludetidily learnt rather than both in a slightlychaotic state!
