Dear Friends and Parishioners of Ascension, Tomorrow is the national observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Day. It is the day set aside by our nation in order to recognize and remember the life and efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It was Dr. King who said, “If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority. If the Church does not participate actively in the struggle for peace and for economic and racial justice, it will cause people everywhere to say it has atrophied its will.” As a people of faith, we can never be satisfied with the status quo. We have to continue to strive to make justice and peace a reality – a lifelong challenge. Tomorrow, the churches of the Upper West Side will be sponsoring their 15th Annual MLK Peace Walk. Those who are interested in walking will gather in front of Holy Name Church, 96th Street and Amsterdam, at 2:00p.m. The Walk will proceed north to several other houses of worship and will end at Valley Lodge on West 108th Street. The Theme this year is to support the West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing organization's senior/affordable housing plan for Valley Lodge on West 108th Street. The Action this year is to invite congregations and walkers to sign a petition for 100% affordable housing and community space in Manhattan Valley. The petition can be found on the organization's website: www.WSFSSHatWest108.org I would like to again remind you of the upcoming Mission that is being sponsored by the Diocese. Revive: Faith Every Day -- is the upcoming Mission/Retreat that will take place in every cluster. Again, this will take place on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, January 30th, 31st, and February 1st. The mission will begin at 7p.m. and the preacher of the mission will be Fr. Kenan Peters, C.P. Mass will only be celebrated on Wednesday, the third and final night. I invite you to mark your calendars for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, January 30th, 31st, and February 1st. And finally, may I also call your attention to the fact that January is National Poverty Awareness Month. 43 million people live in poverty in the United States (U.S. Census Bureau, 2015). The number of people in poverty in the United States is larger than the populations of Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, and Nebraska… combined. During Poverty Awareness Month, we are invited to join the U.S. Bishops, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and the Catholic Community in the United States in taking up Pope Francis' challenge to live in solidarity with the poor! I call your attention to a calendar that may be found with this link. http://www.usccb.org/about/catholic-campaign-for-human-development/poverty-education/poverty-awareness-month.cfm In addition to the calendar, longer daily reflections are also available. All of these are also in Spanish. Pope Francis says, “Among our tasks as witnesses to the love of Christ is that of giving a voice to the cry of the poor.” Peace, Fr. Kearney

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

Mañana es la observancia nacional del Día del Dr. Martin Luther King. Es el día apartado por nuestra nación para reconocer y recordar la vida y esfuerzos del Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Fue el Dr. King quien dijo, “Si la iglesia no recupera su fervor profético, se convertirá en un irrelevante club social sin autoridad moral ni espiritual. Si la iglesia no participa activamente en la lucha por la paz y por la justicia económica y social, hará que la gente en todas partes diga que ha atrofiado su voluntad.” Como gente de fe, nunca podemos estar satisfechos con el estatus quo. Tenemos que continuar esforzándonos para que la justicia y la paz sean una realidad – un reto de por vida. Mañana las iglesias del West Side estarán auspiciando su decimoquinta Caminata Anual de Paz MLK. Aquellos que estén interesados en caminar se reunirán al frente de la Iglesia del Santo Nombre, calle 96 y Amsterdam, a las 2 de la tarde. La caminata procederá al norte, a varias otras casas de veneración y terminará en Valley Lodge en la calle 108 oeste. La acción este año es invitar a congregaciones y caminantes a firmar una petición para el plan de 100% de viviendas a precios accesibles y espacio comunal en Manhattan Valley. El número de personas en pobreza en los Estados Unidos es más grande que la población de Tejas, Nuevo México, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, Nebraska …combinadas. ¡Durante el Mes de Conciencia de la Pobreza, se nos invita a unirnos a los obispos de los EE.UU., la Campaña Católica para el Desarrollo Humano y la comunidad católica de los Estados Unidos en acoger el reto del Papa Francisco de vivir en solidaridad con los pobres! The Ascension Reading Group will meet on Wednesday, Jan 18 at 7PM in the rectory to discuss CHRIST IN CONCRETE by Pietro di Donato. All are welcome.

2017 has arrived. It is an especially important time as Catholics to think clearly, read broadly and engage with our sisters and brothers to create community and encourage each other for the challenges ahead.

Ascension Reading Group is inviting you to join us by participating in the power that what one good book can do to inform, clarify, enhance our lives and encourage us to action.

We ask you to recommend a book for our group that you think we should read with a brief reason.

We ask you to join us once or twice or every month (September through June) to share your thoughts with fellow readers and create a community of active readers.

December Shelter News- It’s

warm and cozy in here!

We hosted 90 men on 6 nights in December including Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The men have been treated to terrific dinners and breakfasts and good conversation from a wide array of volunteers.

Because of donations from parishioners, we were able to distribute socks, hats, gloves and scarves as well as gift bags to our guests. The men were grateful and repeatedly ask that the parishioners be thanked. Thanks to all who have generously donated! Know that your gifts are deeply appreciated.

In January we are having the final collection of the season and asking parishioners to donate new thermal men’s underclothes, both tops and bottoms. Men’s sizes M-3XL are needed. Thermal or base layer tops and bottoms are needed for our guests who spend time outside. These warm underclothes also do double duty as pajamas for the men when they sleep in drafty shelters. Please leave your donations in the rectory with a note indicating it is for the shelter. New volunteers are always welcome to join the volunteer team at the shelter. Diciembre Noticias del refugio – Es cálido y acogedor aquí

Alojamos a 90 hombres en el transcurso de 6 noches en diciembre, incluyendo Nochebuena y Año Nuevo. Los hombres disfrutaron de cenas y desayunos excelentes, y buena conversación por parte de una gran variedad de voluntarios. Gracias a las donaciones de nuestros feligreses, pudimos distribuir medias, sombreros, y bufandas, tanto como bolsas de regalo a nuestros huéspedes. Los hombres estaban agradecidos y pidieran repetidamente que se agradeciera a los feligreses. ¡Gracias a todos los que donaron generosamente! Sepan que sus donaciones son muy apreciadas.

En enero, tendremos la colección final de la estación; pedimos

que donen nueva ropa interior térmica masculina, tanto camisas como calsetines. Nuestros huéspedes que pasan tiempo afuera los aprecian mucho, y tambien tienen doble función como pijamas cuando duermen en refugios fríos. Tallas de hombre M a 3XL son bienvenidos.
