Peals rung during 1962 to ta l 56, the lowest since 1955 when 51 w ere recorded.

Once again our M inor friends have taken the lead w ith 23, against 19 of M ajor.

This w as m ainly due to th e enthusiastic band a t Barking, and those who ring in the H alesw orth area. The m ajo r peals include Glasgow and K endal Surprise, rung in the County for the first tim e, and a few other Surprise m ethods, otherw ise these peals are of a very low standard .

Royal include London, Cam bridge, Yorkshire, Pudsey and York Surprise, tak ing p a r t in the la tte r enabled Mrs. S. R. E. Pipe to ring peals of Y ork on 6, 8, 10 and 12 bells. Of the three peals of M aximus (Y orkshire and Cam bridge 2) one was the 100th peal of M axim us by George E. Symonds, a record held by a m inority . All, I am sure, will join me w ith congratulations on th is fine achievem ent, not forgetting those who helped him to reach his goal.

Two peals of Caters, one of T riples and one of Doubles were recorded; again no peal of Cinques or S tedm an was rung. These peals w ere rung in 35 tow ers, and 23 shared in the conducting, to be headed this year by John W. B lythe w ith 14.

Five young m em bers scored the ir first peal.Eye has had its first peal since re-dedication, so righ tly con

ducted by the D istrict Ringing M aster, Robert E. Lester.D uring the year 56 qu arte r peals have been rung, most of

these for services, “Good Going” from 29 towers, B arking 7, G rundisburgh 5, Exning 5 and Roug'ham 4.

It is m ost pleasing to know th a t over the county several young pupils are getting in terested in our art. At H alesw orth John B lythe has a band m aking good progress, W alter Bailey at H igham is over-run w ith beginners, while Howard Egglestone is doing good w ork a t Henley. W herever a band has a recru it, I w ish them every success.

D uring the year Mr. L. E. Last has done a g rand job lectu ring on bells and ringing in the county. Result so fa r— W etheringsett bells a re being rung regularly again.

W ith the Ladies Guild visiting the County in 1963 for the first tim e, w hy not m ake it a record year ?

LESLIE G. BRETT, Ringing M aster

GENERAL SECRETARY’S REPORTIn some ways th is has been a disappointing year. Activity

does not seem to have been quite so prolific as in some recent years, but, it is to be hoped th a t 1963 will show a reversa l of th is trend.

The attendance at m eetings has not been as good as your officers would have w ished and it is to be hoped th a t m em bers will m ake a g rea ter effort to support them in the coming year. The A nnual G eneral M eeting was held at Bury St. Edm unds

and was one of the best we have had w ith ex tra tow ers being available and tea being most successfully arranged by Mr. W right and the ladies.

M embership is slightly down a t 489 but in some parts of the Diocese there are quite a good num ber of young ringers coming along and in fact have been prom inent at some of our gatherings. We should do all we can to encourage and extend this trend and give them all the assistance we can to im prove the ir standards of strik ing and ringing generally. Your Committee have this forem ost in their m inds and it is to be hoped th a t it m ay be possible for a week-end course to be arranged at Belstead House in the not too d istan t future.

Peals num bered 56 during the year. Five m em bers rang the ir first peal and m any m ore passed notable m ilestones in the ir peal ringing careers. The Ringing M aster refers to some of these highlights in his report but I feel th a t we m ust congratu late all who have achieved successes in th is sphere. W hilst I do not w ish to encroach upon the Ringing M aster’s dom ain I would urge all beginners to aim a t ringing the ir first peal. The benefits w hich accrue from the experience of peal ringing do m uch to im prove the standard of strik ing for Sunday Service ringing.

This year has seen the restoration of the ring of eight at Eye. We all know the efforts m ade by Mr. Claude Rush to bring th is project to completion. It is, therefore, gratifying to know th a t we have another octave in first class order. W ork is contem plated at H artest to augm ent the existing ring of five to six and we hope tha t 1963 will see th e completion of this w orthy scheme. P lans are being considered for restoration w ork a t B ury St. Edm unds and Ipswich and w hilst these are probably of a m ore long term policy we still welcome them and look forw ard to the day when they will be carried out.

The C entral Council m eeting w as held a t Cardiff at W hitsun when you w ere represen ted by Messrs. C. W. P ipe and J. W. Blythe.

The supply of badges received a t the end of 1961 have been on sale during the year and any m em ber who is still in need of one can obtain it from any of the D istrict Secretaries.

The Accounts for the year show a large excess of expenditu re over income. The purchase of badges is the principal item of expenditure to account for this. A donation m ade to the M elbourne C athedral Appeal is also of a non recurring natu re , but, the rem ainder is attribu tab le to a varie ty of reasons. W hilst I anticipate th a t the 1963 accounts will not show such a rap id decline in our finances due to com pensating factors it is obvious th a t we m ust now take steps to a rrest this trend. Your Com m ittee has, therefore, recom m ended th a t the annual subscriptions be increased in 1964,

May I thank all m em bers and Officers who have given the ir support during 1962 and tru s t th a t by our un ited efforts 1963 m ay prove to be a better and happ ier year.

JOHN W. BLYTHE, G eneral S ecretary and Treasurer.5

TECHNICAL ADVISER’S REPORTD uring the year your Technical A dviser continued his w ork

of inspecting and reporting on the contents of our Suffolk tow ers and com pleted 16 reports, bringing the to ta l to date 241. Of the 16 towers, 12 contained rings of bells, being those a t L ittle S tonham , G roton, Edw ardstone, Bildeston, Newton Green, L idgate, G reat W aldingfield, Law shall, M oulton, Hor- ham , L ittle W aldingfield, Ipswich St. M ary-le-Tower. All except the last are unringable.

At L ittle Stonham (5) the tenor is cracked in the crown and the bell fram e and gear are m uch decayed due to a leaky roof. At G roton (5) the treb le has been cracked at the lip by unsafe clocking, a m ethod w hich was being used on the others. The fram e is wedged to the w alls a t bearing level and a new fram e and gear would be requ ired to perm it change ringing again. Bildeston (6) has a cracked pre-Reform ation treble. Of the others, only the fifth w as being used and th a t w as unsafely clocked. It has been said th a t the tenor is cracked, but the w rite r could find no evidence of this, though the bell is a poor one m usically, due, perhaps to being too thin. The rope circle is peculiar, being clockwise 145326, and the gallows type fram e, p a rt oak, p a r t soft wood, has all the bells swinging the w eakest w ay of the tower. H ere again a new fram e and gear will be needed before the bells can be swung in full circles.

The tenor a t N ew ton Green (5) has a porous zone in the crown and is quite unfit, even to swing chime. The fram e is a hotchpotch of tim ber and is now quite unfit even for a light ring of bells.

L idgate (5) has the th ird and tenor cracked at the lip, the fram e and fittings are seriously delapidated and are held up by two rolled steel joists inserted underneath in m odern times.

G reat W aldingfield (6) are by B rian t of H ertford, 1800, w ith the fourth re-cast W arners, 1876. The fram e is 6ft. 4in. high and sits on th ree courses of brick m ounted on a tim ber grillage, a m ost unusual use for brick. U nusually for B rian t bells, they are qu ite a b it out of tune, th e second and fifth being nearly half a sem itone sharp com pared w ith the tenor. Here, too, the fram e has seen its best 'days, the fittings are decayed and the bells need qu arte r turning. C urren tly Ellacombe ham m ers are used.

At L aw shall the w riter had expected to find six bells, but the tow er never seems to have contained more than the present m inor five. The th ird is cracked at the lip. Chiming ham m ers have been used since about 1902 and the gear necessary for change ringing is fragm entary or absent. Peculiarly the th ird wheel has the g a rte r hole a t 12 o’clock w ith the bell down, those on the treb le and tenor are normal.

A t M oulton (5) the second, fourth and tenor are cracked in the crow n and all are unsafely clocked. The bell fram e supporting structu re was found to be very decayed and some action will soon have to be taken to adequately support th e bells,

Page 10: J. J. EDWARDS · 2021. 5. 1. · Ladies and Gentlemen’s Tailors Men’s, Youths’ J. J. and Boys’ Outfitters EDWARDS of 33-35 Tavern Street School and IPSWICH College Wear Phone

H orham has the oldest existing ring of eight bells in the whole of England. There w ere earlier rings of eight, but they have all in p a rt or com pletely been re-cast in la te r tim es. At H orham the la test bell is the treb le dated 1673. The last peal w as rung here in 1911 and now the fram e and gear is m uch decaped, but of considerable in terest. The w rite r has in hand an article for the Ringing W orld on these bells. The rope circle clockwise is 15643278 and the fifth and tenor to-day only have th ree-quarter wheels, i.e. the rim only covers an arc of 270 degrees.

L ittle W aldingfield (5) tenor seems to have been re-hung about 1900 and. the fittings are quite good, bu t the sta te of those on the other ru le out change ringing as the headstocks are so weak. The fram e is decayed and has been wedged to the walls at bearing level. The m edieval ladder to the bells is of interest, o thers are to be seen at Boxford and Orford.

Ipswich St. M ary-le-Tower (12) has an unsatisfactory p a rt wood and p art m etal frame. Tonally some of the lighter bells are m uch below any reasonable standard . In order of poorness, the w orst first, the w riter suggests:— F ifth (W arners 1866), F ourth (C. Hodson 1688), T reble (W arners 1866), N inth (W arners 1866). Second (Taylors 1845), S ix th (D arbie 1671). The w rite r feels th a t some re-casting w ill be unavoidable if the m usical p roperties of the ring are to be brought up to a reasonable standard and he has suggested th a t the fron t six and the n in th should be re-cast. The new fram e should m ake provision for either a flat sixth or a sharp second, depending on w hether the n in th is to be re-cast or not.

The Diocesan Advisory Com m ittee for the Care of Churches has considered a num ber of faculty applications connected w ith bells. The scheme to add a treble to the five at H artest was approved. The th ree bells at M artlesham are to be re-hung for swing chiming, and the tenor, w hich is cracked, re-cast. The brick top of N ayland tow er is to be removed as the pinnacles are unsafe and § tim ber fram ed spire is to be installed instead. This will m ake its appearance to be m uch the same as in Constable’s day. The bells are to be re-hung in a new fram e lower down the tower. The Committee has also considered John M arven's tom b in Copdock churchyard. He was a noted Suffolk ringer and died in 1789, aged 34. His tomb is a fine one and its restoration has been recommended.

D uring the year Eye bells have been re-dedicated afte r re hanging and re-casting the tenor. They now go much better th an form erly and the m usical effect is m uch improved.

W orlingworth (8) bells have been rung for the first tim e for some years, the silence being due to repairs to the fabric; un fo rtunate ly the tenor is cracked in the crown and the tone is affected.

Ipsw ich St. N icholas (5) w ere also rung for the first tim e for quite a period; it is reported th a t the bearings are much worn, causing considerable knocking. The fron t four are in driven-in bearings w ith wood boards over, installed probably over 100 years ago. Those for the tenor are in cast iron boxes and are thus m ore recent.

Your A dviser’s thanks are due to Mr. Ronald S tew ard for his help and inform ation.

R. W. M. CLOUSTON

NORTH-WEST DISTRICT REPORTThere w ere four ringing m eetings and seven practice meetings

w ith one jo in t p ractice m eeting a t Long M elford in the year, which w as very well attended.

We reg re t to repo rt the death on F eb ruary 11th of Mrs. C. S tannard , of Fornham A ll Saints, who was a g rea t Church w orker, and her services w ill be sadly missed. O ur sym pathy goes out to Mr. S tannard , a m em ber of the Bury St. Edm unds com pany, in his sad and sudden loss.

Once again the end of the year has come and now it is my tu rn to sincerely th a n k all m em bers near and fa r for their support.

ARTHUR F. BALLAM, D istrict Secretary.

SOUTH-EAST DISTRICT REPORTO ur q uarte rly m eetings w ere held a t W oodbridge, Ufford,

Sproughton and H enley w ith an average attendance of tw enty- five. We w ere particu larly pleased to v isit Sproughton, where there had not been a m eeting for some years, and to m eet the new incum bent, Rev. E. A. Wells. A t Henley eleven proba- tionery m em bers w ere elected, eight of them being from the local tow er w here they are being tau g h t to ring by Howard Egglestone, who, together w ith his wife M argaret, is a welcome new com er to the d istrict.

A t th e first m eeting of the year new officers w ere elected and am ongst those re tiring w ere Messrs. C. R. Lovett and C. W. Pipe, to whom thanks are due for the w ork they have done in th e past, both for the presen t d istric t and its forerunner.

A lthough 1962 w as a quiet year for peals, two fine individual perform ances by our m em bers m ust be m entioned. George Symonds rang his 100th peal of M axim us in M arch an d in A ugust Roddy P ipe called the first of Glasgow S urprise for the Guild. Congratulations to both.

A t long la st the launching of the appeal for the St. M ary-le- Tower R estoration Fund has been m ade. A t the tim e of w riting some £10,000 of the £25,000 required overall has been raised. The re-hanging of the bells is planned, b u t th is will have to take its tu rn afte r m ore u rgen t church works. Still, perhaps it w on’t be too long now before we have a good ring of tw elve again.

Looking' forw ard to 1963, let us strike an optim istic note and hope th a t the sm all increase in paying m em bers for 1962 will resu lt in better attended m eetings and m ore in term ingling by the various bands in the d istrict, afte r all th a t is one of the objects of our Guild. More im portant, however, le t us hope th a t we will be m ore successful in our efforts to find and train recru its and so provide m ore Sunday Service Bands.

In conclusion I would like to th a n k all those who have helped m e w ith m y duties in th e year and a t the sam e tim e wish, most sincerely, all m em bers of the Suffolk Guild a very successful 1963.

J. B. MORLEY, D istrict Secretary.

WEST-CENTRAL DISTRICT REPORTN ineteen-sixty-two has been disappointing in m ore than one

way. F irstly the poor num ber of d istric t m em bers who tu rn up a t the m eetings held in the d istrict th roughout the year, there w ere only six presen t on two occasions. Secondly, the Sunday Service Ringing has also fallen aw ay very badly which is very discouraging and practice nights are alm ost a th ing of the past th roughout the district.

Four m eetings have been held during th e year a t Palgrave, W etherden, Eye and Oakley w ith Brome, also evening meetings a t Barking, R attlesden and M endlesham.

The g reat high-light of the year in the D istrict was the dedication of the eight bells a t Eye which now m ake a very fine octave in a d istric t which is very short of rings of eight.

May I in closing thank the C hairm an and Ringing M aster for the ir support during the p as t yea r and hope the d istric t m ay have a m ore active year in 1963.

H. A. MITSON, D istrict Secretary.

NORTH-EAST DISTRICT REPORTEight m eetings w ere held during the year, four quarte rly

meetings a t Bungay, H alesw orth, Leiston and Southwold, and four p ractice m eetings at Saxm undham , B laxhall, Peasenhall and Yoxford and W ickham M arket and M arlesford. The average attendance a t each m eeting was tw enty-five and it was very encouraging to see so m any young ringers in attendance.

I should like to th a n k all m em bers for th e ir support during the year.

MARION E. BRANCH, D istrict Secretary.

SOUTH WEST DISTRICT REPORT

M ay I begin m y repo rt by w ishing every happiness for the fu tu re to Rosem ary Seabrook and Roger P alm er who were m arried at C lare in October also to B arbara M atthews, of Higham. U nfortunately both these lady ringers have left the district.

We have had an average year w ith four m eetings a t H averhill, G reat Thurlow , Glem sford and Lavenham . Mr. an'd Mrs. R. A. Vestey, of G reat Thurlow Hall, have offered us a Cup to encourage ringing in the d istrict, w hich we have decided to accept.

I should like to thank all m em bers who have supported me in 1962, b u t hope we shall see a few fresh faces in 1963 as well as the “old faith fu ls.”
