COBURG IN FIRST : ~:`~DOWN TO DE LA SALLE BY 31 PT5.Monash's Big Finish B eats M . .g,

By GEORGE McTAGGART

Well, it finally happened - Coburg suffered their first defeat for theseason last Saturday when they went down to De La Salle by 31 points .

They could not cover the loss of five players to the Victorian CarnivalTeam and fumbled badly against a determined De La Salle who played morepurposeful football all day.

Melbourne High's greater accuracy kept them in front of Monash Univer-sity for tthree quarters, but Monash suddenly hit the target in the last termwhen they kicked 8-1 to High"s 3-4 and Monash won by 16 points.

Old Scotch returned to form with a 3-goal win over University Blacks inthe game at Elsternwick Park, leaving Geelong atone at the top of the BSection ladder .

University Blacks Reserves alsohad their first defeat for the season, leaving only two unbeaten teams now- Ormond Reserves and ReservoirOld Boys Reserves .

Caulfield Grammar led Collegiansuntil the last quarter when Collegians, playing the better football, hit thefront. The lead changed severaltimes until just before the finish .when Caulfield with a determined bidraced away to win convincingly by 29points .

University Blues got on top of OldParadians after a fast, even fir, tquarter which produced 13 goals, andthe Blues went right away to win bymore than 11 goals . Fourteen of their23 goals came from two players -full forward David Barkley (8) andfollower Tim Standish (6) .

After a fairly even first half, Or-mond turned on brilliant football afterthe interval and completely eclipsedIvanhoe, who went down by nearly15 goals .

De La Salle were too strong in theair for Coburg and led in the race forthe ball . "De La" led narrowly forthe first half but Coburg caught themin the third quarter. The last was all"De La" when they ran away to acomfortable win.

The Monash - Melbourne Highgame opened at a fast pace with somebrilliant high-marking and long kick-ing by both teams . Then the windstarted to have its effect, and thegame became scrambly and both sidesmaking many mistakes .

High led by 8 points at half-timebut failed to make full use of thescoring end in the third term andwere only 11 points in front at three-quarter-time. They could not copewith the home side's new-found accu-racy, although they battled the gameright out.

North Old Boys had a hard battleto beat Commonwealth Bank by 2goals, But Geelong were untroubledat Kew, where the home side wentdown by almost 11 goals .

St. Bernard's scraped home by only5 points from Alphington in a high-scoring game notable for accuratekicking by both sides - St . Bernard'skicking 18-9 to 17-10 . In the other BSection game, Old Xaverians beatFootscray Tech by 33 points to climbout of the relegation zone, at leastfor the time being.Assumption's greater accuracy gave

them a 1-point win over Old Carey ;and they moved up to second atCarey's expense .

The leaders Uni High, crashed badlyagainst Old Melburnians who remain-ed well in the running for the fourwith a 38-point win .

The St. Kilda CBC - National Bankmatch was a contrast in kicking, St .Kilda scoring 10-2 to Bank's 4-16, towin by 3-4 with 8 fewer scoringshots .

Power House moved off the bottomwhen they beat Hampton Rovers by 3goals and Old Haileybury beat Too-ronga-Malvern by 29 points .

The thres joint leaders in D Section- Fairfield, Parkside and Old Trinity, all won fairly comfortably, but two ofthe four teams level in fourth placebeat the other two to sort things outa little .

Old Geelong, who are in the fouron percentage, beat St . Kevin's by 17points and A .M.P. beat Old Brightonby 21 points.

The top four in E Section all hadeasy wins, one of them, La TrobeUniversity beating Elsternwick (equalfifth) by 6 goals . State Saving's Bank, also first out of the four kept theirchances alive with a big win overOld Essendon .

Melbourne High Juniors, who weremaking a gallant bid for the four aftera poor start to the season had theirhopes dashed when they went downto Ormond by 23 points. They arenow two games outside the four.

Ivanhoe beat Coburg by 13 pointsand Monash thrashed St . Bernard's .

In Junior Section 2, West Bruns-wick (fourth) ran Army Apprenticesto 2 points . Army have not beenbeaten on the field, their only lossesbeing three forfeits .

Old Brighton beat Elsternwick by11 points, but their chances of makingthe four are very slender .

There were many close ones amongthe Reserves - Old Scotch beat thepreviously undefeated Blacks by apoint, North Old Boys beat Common-wealth Bank by 2, Footscray scrapedhome by a point from Old Xaveriansand St . Bernard's had only 3 pointsto spare from bottom team Alphing-ton .

Old Brighton beat A .M.P. Societyby 7 points, but St . Kevin's (leaders)went down to Old Geelong by 29points .

Old Camberwell beat Old Xaveriansby 14 points and Elsternwick beatLa Trobe University by 21 points .

Perhaps the news of the rather be-lated but all-conquering run of theReserves forced his welcome come-back.

Ever notice how some people whomake about the same money as your-self seem to be better off ?

Not so much in material sense . It'sjust that they seem more solid, moresecure, happier, contented.

There's always a reason for thisand sometimes it's insurance .

AMP insurance .Some people have a plan they're

working to and there's nothing tostop you from having one .

All you have to do is talk with an

AMP man . He's a specialist. Heknows things that can help you a lot ;

he can work out a way for you tohave more security. An AMP insur-

ance plan is usually fairly simple .

You pay a little regularly and bit bybit it works, and grows, and buildsinto a very healthy lump of money .

If anything should happen to you, then you know your family will besecure because you thought about

them . As soon as you can, talk to anAMP man. Tell him how you stand

and what you want.Even if you already have super-

annuation, extra insurance will makea big difference to your life later on.

AMP is who to turn to. Morepeople turn to us for insurance thanto anyone else .

We must be doing something rightfor people like you . Try us .

I doubt if there were any reallyhappy Alphington players after thefinal siren last week, but this couldbe expected when both Reserves andSeniors were defeated by the lastkick of their respective matches .

On the credit side, Pere Adamscould see a vast improvement in theteam effort and a big lift in spirit .

A winning centre-line led by Rus-sell (Abba-Dabba) Abernathy gave theBrunswick forwards many chances toscore.

His kicking to position was a de-light to watch .

Assumption supporters and friendswere saddened to hear of the suddendeath of one of their staunchest sup-porters in Mark Canavan, last week .

His presence each week and hiswords of constructive praise andcriticism, were indicative of the char-acter of the man who will be sadlymissed by all who knew him .

in the back line for the past six oreight seasons .

Well George, it took you a whilebut you finally saw the light .full forward, and "Cuz" Grarham willbe real boomers in the games aroundSeptember .

The third quarter was highlightedby some great back play by Ian Bick-eridge, Pete Molloy and "Cat" Mehan.

It was in this quarter that the gamewas really won as the opposition-kicked only two goals despite theuse of a six-goal wind .

The final term saw the most evenquarter of the game, with the forwardline converting enough opportunitiesfor their three-goal win .

Collegian members and supporters, well wishers and others will be pleas-ed to hear that Brian Powell is outof the hospital (mainly due to theshortage of beds) but is still a sickboy and is confined to his bed wherehe is under the care of his. wife and,I believe, his sister Glenys (a qualifiednursing sister) .

We wish him a speedy recoveryand thank all those who enquiredafter Brian's health .

BALL BRIEFSThe Alphington ground seems to

have shrunk since my day .Last week players from both teams

kicked goals from way out, but thebest was that by Barry Shearer.

He wasn't far from the end of thecricket pitch when he let fly and theball passed through the goalpostsnearer the top than the bottom .

Bill Leifting played a grand gamefor Tooronga-Malvern Juniors lastweek, being in almost every forwardmove besides kicking 3 goals himself .

One goal he popped through fromthe behind post off the wrong footwhilst running away from goal wasa gem.

John McMaster was very effectivein defence and David Braun, JohnBlack, Wayne Stokes and GrahamWatts were always well in the picture .

Footscray Tech's ghost really cameto life last week.

"The Spook" promoted from thereserves battled hard and fought wellall day .

Good to see the "Passionate One"find form after a series of earlynights .

"Punch" roved strongly and markedvery well around the ground .

Brunswick's Keith (Which-way)Weybury completely crushed the op-position with his aerial supremacylast week.

He held command of the air all dayand capped this off with two goodgoals .

Peter Hanson returned to the OldCamberwell line-up last week withfive goals .

His drive had been missed especiallyaround the goals .

Other players to show out in lastweek's win over Dookie Longerenongwere captain Ken Wood who starredin the centre Dave Tucker who wasonce again impassable on the backflank, "Butch" MacAllum who gave

great drive in the ruck, and MarkTipping who was involved in practic-ally everything on the forward line .

Special mention to Johnny Crewinwho despite a broken hand earlier inthe season, is having a great year.

The big news at Old Brighton isthat number one supporter "Big" JackTrewavas has been married for thirtyyears last Saturday .

Jack and Nan have given OldBrighton three players (?) and in-numerable donations over the years .

Well done from everybody atBrighton Beach .

Collegians Reserves welcomed thereturn of assistant-coach John Moodieto the side .

John kicked four of his team's tallyof goals, and other goal sneaks wereBenjamin McKenzie and Buzaglo .

Our best players for the reservescame from Day, Lugg, Opie, Windest,Moodie and L . Richards.

The Mood's four goals put him twoahead of Rod Opie's tally for our re-serves, and both their tallies shouldbe ve :y much bigger before the seas-on's over .

Assumption made a great lastquarter effort to grab a narrow winlast week.

Supreme all day was Des Tuck whowas the dynamo that sparked the re,vival .

His general play and long kicks area joy to Blues supporters who haveat times found this their only joy .

Other highlights of the day includedGerry Harding's new theory on mark-ing - he now lies down on the job ;Steve Cooper's never-say-die lastquarter and Barry Dyer adding lastminute mobility to the half-forwardline .

Our spy at the game also told methat E. O'H is not suffering from tineaand will strip for the reserves nextweek.

E3all Briefs - continuedSt. Pat's Ballarat dashing reserve

Andy, now to be called "Soapy" Lanewas best dressed player last week .

After spending Saturday morning atthe laundramat cleaning his footballgear turned up with them still asblack as ever .

He tells us he forgot the soap suds!St . Bernard's Juniors gave a lethar-

aic display against Monash with afew exceptions .

Acting captain Damien Santamaria, was in fine form in the back pocket, and was an inspiration all day .

He said a few words too .Galloping Des McGowan backed

him up well as fill-in full back and- could it be Dessy can see at last -he took some screamers .

Against some tough opposition itis pleasing to see new players DavidMorgan and Grange Crawshaw doingso well in the Glenhuntly Firsts .

Laurie Ardley is playing with allhis old sureness and Bruce Warner iscovering plenty of ground to lift theforward line .All ended happily ever after for

AMP coach Barry Van Ess who cele-brated his anniversary and an AMPvictory last Saturday night .

AMP's usual strengths, strangelyenough were down in form on recentweeks with the exception of "Fats"Thompson who again was in business

for the full 100 minutes .Stop-gap "Blossie" filled in ade-

quately for Max and Laurie Taylorwas supreme in defence .

Alan Saxby made the most of hislast minute inclusion and assisted"Porter".

Lets see you AMP on Parkside to-day in a big way .

The OM's Firsts had their best winfor the season last week with every-one contributing towards the victory .

Geoff Cloke played another brilliantgame on the half-back flank; Mick

Loughlin showed out on the wing andDave `OYlegs" Urquhart marked bril-liantly around the ground .

Bruce Niemann continued his goodform at full-forward receiving manyoppo: tunities from Dave Russell .

Pete Roberson roved well and hopehe continues in this vein for his 50thgame next week .

Apologies are extended to the restof the team all of whom should beincluded in this ball brief .

Dave "Solid" Berry took over incapable fashion as captain of Ivanhoelast week, in the absence of Wee Wil-liam .

The result might not have been asDave desired, but he certainly lookedthe part right down to his new hoots .

A strong finish in the last quartersaw St . Kilda CBOC win comfortablyto leave four wins required to makethe four.

We must treat every game like afinal till the end of the season .

Best players were Ian White whoturned in his best game for the year,Vic Calleja, Dennis Drew fast becom-ing our most consistent player, and"Bones" Drinan .

Supporters of Old Trinity wereagain subjected to what seems to bethe weekly serial of close finishes .

Again the team put in only onegood quarter, just enough to win thefour points

If it hadn't been for a strong re- .viva] of players like Rod Jones, Rodde Boos and Bruce Kleinert the resultmight have been somewhat different .

Big games by Wally Kozlowski andBruce Corben in Ormond's crushingwin last week.

These two under 19 boys on beingpromoted to the seniors have givennotice that they are both in the sideto stay .

Clearly, places in the future will be-come pretty tight with the return ??of the Interstate reps .

Ball Briefs - continuedTo.oronga-Malvern secretary is a

guy who does the impossible in everyway .

Naturally he is overworked andmost of what he does goes unnoticed .

If every committeeman at T-M' sgave as much as the DJ we wouldhave a lot more success both on andoff the field .

Another big win by UniversityBlues last week saw Tim Standishplay easily his hest game of the seas-on, not only in the forward pocketwhere he kicked six goals, but on theball as well .

The dry conditions also suited"Sparkles" who managed to kickeight, Colin Leitch continued to playwell on the wing and newcomer RonGreen really fired when he came onat half-time .

The highlight of the day was in thethird quarter when Ken Scarfe grab-bed a hit-out in the centre and bootedan enormous goal - truly amazing .

After a very disappointing first half,in which teamwork was virtually non-existent . North Old Boys eventuallyclicked in the last quarter to run outwinners against Commonwealth Bankby two goals .

Bob Spurling and Damien Maguireplayed consistent football all day andwhen other members of the sidecapitalised on their efforts, Northlooked a much better side.

Rob Wilson played a great gamearound the packs for Monash Uni .on Saturday .

Rob has been in great form thisseason and has been consistently win-ning around the packs. Keep it upRob .

Keep up the good work R .O .B.'s .The lst eighteen are one game clearon top, the reserves are three gamesclear undefeated. Let's keep up thegood work and not lose another gam efor the year.

Page 22

The wog (the flu wog, not Georgehas hit the Alphington Juniors heavilyand they had to enlist the aid of th(kindergarten mob again to put a teaty.on the field .

How they covered the vacant plac .es in the team is hard to imaginebut there were enough good player,to keep the ball up to Welch a

n Wills.Barry Chapman really turned it or.

for Footscray Reserves last week.Chappo dobbed 5 and fought the

game out right to the final bell .Young Alan Fox also played a great

game on the wing and forward flank,Foxy marked strongly and was

most disappointed when his shot atgoal hit the post in the final term .

With only minutes to go Footscraykept the ball on the forward line .

From the throw in big John Munngrabbed the ball forced through 2or 3 defenders and snapped it throughto give us victory by 1 point .

Brunswick Reserves kept their finalfour chances alive with a good winover A.J .A .X . reserves .

It was good to see the return toform of Lee (Elvis) Gordon .

It was also good to see Ross Vincentback in action last week after a longbreak from football due to two ser-ious injuries in the '68 and '69 sea-sons .

Ross, who played with the Old Cam-berwell Reserves, showed that despiteonly two games in two years he hasnot lost his touch .

He marked well, kicked stronglyand created plenty of opportunties forteammates .

Welcome back and keep up thegood work Ross .

Collegians gave Caulfield Gr . a sur-prise by staying with them until halfway through the last quarter whenCaulfield drew away and went on to acomfortable win.

the younger ones to follow, and willgive or ask no quarter of any playerhe plays against ; the tougher theyare the better Wes likes it.

Assumption reserves seem to be lostat home these days .A bad case of "wrong-flank-itis"

last week and have put their chancesfor the final four in jeopardy . LesCaldwell played an excellent captain'sgame with Peter Sharp and Tim Aldersupported him well on the wings .

Col Pyrnan was the only hackmanto show out, Jo`hn Benson provided

St• Kilda CBOC Reserves showed awelcome return to formlast week to win well

Highlights were Tony Sherman'sfine game at full back where he letnothing past, and Robin Harrison'

Players to show out were John New-ton who rucked tirelessly all day,P.olly Perkins who would just not

A great opening quarter, in whichCoburg Reserves kicked 7 goals, pav-ed the way for an easy win over DeLa Salle .

FROM HERE AND THEREOLD TRINITY MAN REACHES 158

Belated congratulations to Old Trin-ity's Tony Dart who broke Hummo'sclub record when he ran out lastweek for his 158th game with theclub .Tony has given the club many sea-

sons invaluable service both as a play-er and dedicated assistant secretary .

As a player Tony has showed histeam mates the way to play the game, hard but fair, if Tony can keep upwith the expense of losing contactlenses we can expect many more finegames from him yet .

150 GAMES FOR KEW STARCongratulations to Ian Job from

all at Kew on playing his 150th gameagainst Geelong last week.

"Tunna" has given great service tothe club both as a player and as acommittee man .

Well done Tunna .

HELLO TO GYMPIE, THE BLEEDERAND THE PEN

It was a good win at Kew by ourboys . We had many good players .

To name a few Guyon Wilson, wh okicked four goals and took umpteenmarks, Lionel Smith, who is reallyback in business on the centre line,Brian Smith, Alan Foster and AlanFlucker, acting captain Ken Andrewsand Mickey Allden again his usual ef-fective self .

The Kew ground was in a firm con-dition which was remarkable con-sidering the "great" weather. A bitlike the Harry (sorry or is it Henry!!)Trott .

Today we have the Old Xavs . JackBowen suggests we postpone thematch and start on Old Scotch's re-cord .

Not likely, we are not particularlyinterested in "the record" until wecan manage the win .

John Vautier has had the `flu andcould not make it .

Mick Meagher had the unenviabletask of stepping in and carried thedeal with distinction .

Now for the highlight . The poise, elegance, showmanship, purposeful-ness, speed and precision of "Flossy"Hewitt between the goal posts farsurpassed the efforts of stand-in JohnCasboult earlier in the year.

Indeed must hold "Flossy" in anextremely healthy position with re-gard to a permanent appointment .

Might be baby elephant's turn to-day ?

Till next week Pu!~sy Cat .101 GAMES AT ALPHINGTONWe found out that Jeff Scott hadn't

been credited with a game the weekhe returned from his holidays withthat beard .

The record for that week mentions"hairy stranger", so we have cor-rected the total, making him one ofthe elect .

He started with our juniors, play-ed a season or two with Monash thencame back to demonstrate a uniquemanner of ball control, a cool andcalm approach to tight situations anda quiet approach to the dressing roomthat requires a couple of looks tosee if he is in the room.HELLO POISON PEN AND BLEEDER

and GREETINGS PUSSY CATCommonwealth Bank are fast gain-

ing the reputation of always the bri-desmaid - it was the time-on periodbefore North caught us on Saturday .

With a cross-wind blowing we wor-ried North for most of the game andI sensed victory until Bob Spurlingwent on to their half forward line .We had great triers in Keith Imbery, the invincible Les Radford, Carl Ven-tura, Chris Robb and the battlingBob Cooper.

When we led by 16 points at threequarter time the Gympie heart wasthumping wildly, but victory justwould not come .

From Here and There ® continuedThe Reserves turned in another

thriller - us down by 2 points thistime. I thought the Reserves weregoing racial - four Browns and threeWhites are a team manager's night-mare . Thank heavens Stewie Smithhas retired .

There were good players in JohnWhite, Steve White, that grand lit-tle battler Sam Athans, 'Kevin Mc-Nally, Russell Joy and "Frosty" Line-han .The dance was a huge success -

but perhaps 10 kegs were a little toomuch to waltz to; however we mademoney so the trip to regain the Dixonshield against our counterparts inAdelaide is assured .

I'm the king at the Pride of Erin .Kew today, perhaps we will win

this - on form we are going to behard to beat .

Until all your onions get pickled-- Gympie. PS - Pussy Cat - "Ac-tion" did not play - he is injured .

Star St. Kilda CBOC full backKevin "Bones" Drinan turns out forhis 50th game this Saturday .

A fine high mark and an unstylishbut effective kick, Kevin is an 1 n _credibly determined player who isnever beaten as all his opponentshave found this season .

His ability to maintain balance af-ter flying for the ball gives him ex-cellent recovery and to the dismay ofhapless full-forwards he rarely failsto clear the ball.

Keep it up "Bones" .Good to see Geoff "Foxy" Cohen

notch his fifty games .Fox played in the early years of

Old Ivanhoe, then went overseas forthree years and is back this yearplaying as well as ever .

Well done Fox .Congratulations to U .H .S . Old Boys

players Geoff Davis, Dennis Belcher

who play their 50th games for theclub today .

Geoff, who is leading goalkicker for"C" grade has been a great playerfor the club on the forward line, either at full forward or centre halfforward.

At the other end of the groundDennis has been a strength to theclub when playing either at full backor centre half back .

Well done Geoff and Dennis .Kevin White, the most junior of the

WHITE family in the senior side, re-cently played his 50th game for theclub.

A magnificent high mark and a longaccu ate kick, Kevin's ruck play hasbeen a strength of the team all sea-son.

St . Kilda CBOC can expect muchfine service from this big player if theservice from his family in the past i s

'TIS THE BLEEDER CALLING100 GAMES UP TO U .H.S. PLAYER

All at U.H.S . Old Boys congratu-late Barry Bennett for his 100th gametoday .

From Here and ThereTIS THE BLEEDER CALLING

Greetings fellow scribes, the Che-shire Cat act is still on, Fairfield weresuccessful once again .

We fell in a hole in the last quarterbut fortunately our lead was bigenough to hold on till siren time .

Two or three young lads wereblooded, as our old enemy ClaudeCough-Cold had recruited a few ofour stars - they played reasonablywell too .

Ross Greer showed he's a thinkerand Mickey "Mouse" Gill will behandy to have around, Len "Major"Mitchell did well in the back pocketwhen he went on as a reserve .

The little red corpuscle sends hisregards to P.P. and asks to jog yourmemory in regard to that night out .

continuedSaw Parkside had a win, but I don't

know how Gympie's and Pussy Cat'steams managed, so I can only hopefor you both .

Have had no news about our 4W.T.'s so I can only assume that nonews is good news .

Till next week .The Bleede r
