Executive Summary

The Dissemination Report shows that the project iWalkActive has been presented on various media, events, forums and trade shows. A number of presentations have been hold to introduce the project to experts and to the public. In the project we used the classical media like printed media, radio and TV as well as new media like blogs, Facebook or a website. Also some papers were published to bring the more scientific aspects of the project to public.

Concerning Exploitation some partners have started to plan how they can use the knowledge gained during the project. Particularly TRI as the manufacturer of the Veloped together with TRK is thinking about bring to market the prototype developed in iWalkActive. Other partners have to define the ongoing plans also after finishing the project.

1 About this Document This document contains information about the dissemination activities and the exploitation plans. The dissemination activities are structured by the type of activity or medium. A list of the activities accomplishes the description of dissemination activity.

The exploitation plans of the partners are also included in this document. They show the corresponding exploitation plans including a comparison against the initial plans that have been defined in the description of work. The comparison also explains possible deviations between actual and initial plans.

Therefore we have made use of these opportunities where the AAL-Forum is one of the most important events. The demonstration of the prototypes at the booths was complemented by flyers and posters.

3 Exploitation of Results 3.1 Initial Exploitation Plan Text from the Description of Work:

The iWalkActive primary target group does not want to spend their money in “senior” retail shops or sanity-houses (German; Sanitätshäuser). They would prefer to buy and rent modern products in shopping centres, ICT-stores, sports and outdoor shops, tourist resorts and hotels, just like people of other age groups. By choosing different distribution channels than those used for conventional walking aids, the whole service/product experience will turn more up to date, all the way from purchase/rental to user experience and personal image. A person interested in a certain physical activity, should find the active walker when practising his/her choice of activity.

Instead of marketing, sales and distribution towards traditional mobility retailers, the active walker will be marketed, sold and rented out in the places where physical activities take place. The services and products will physically be placed at tourist resorts, sport hotels, hiking clubs & Nordic Walking facilities. In addition, the iWalkActive will be marketed towards the end user on the Internet.

The above sales approach creates a customer-pull effect, rather than using the traditional retailer-push strategy. If the end user immediately gets aware of the services and the products offered, the introduction of iWalkActive to the market will be promoted.

The following figure shows how the different business areas can profit from iWalkActive and (red boxes) also how the iWalkActive consortium partners may generate their own business (directly and indirectly). Besides pure business, the platform is also intended to be opened and used for the scientific community to study further topics and build apps on it.

IHL has gained a profound knowledge and increased the competences carrying out field trials with potential end users; in the case of iWalkActive people mostly in the age group 60+.

IHL has also increased the knowledge in indoor localisation technology. By installing the localisation system a good expertise in that technology is now available.

Further experience could be gained through iWalkActive for the concept of “Intention driven devices” particularly in combination with e-drives.

IHL has established contacts to end user organisations as well as to potential end users directly. These contacts will be of use for future projects where end user tests are of importance.

iWalkActive enabled the contact to a community dealing with localisation and navigation technology. IHL could benefit from the participation and has contributed to the community.

Due to the increased competences in the above mentioned fields IHL can place itself as a competent partner in future projects.

Each of the partners is a potential partner in future projects. Therefore knowing the iWalkActive partners can influence the strategy of IHL and follow up projects are aimed for.

Table 10: IHL Exploitation Table

Assessment of Alignment The plans for exploitation did change during the course of the project. Where at the beginning building and exploiting a platform was the main intent this has changed to building up a test environment for complex tests (localisation system for navigation in several buildings). The constellation of the consortium and the possibilities of a test environment suggested that IHL focuses on the task to integrate the system, build a test environment and carry out the trials.

The iWalkActive project clearly initialised new activities and caused new competences in terms of the development of navigation systems in general. It massively improved the outdoor navigation knowledge and competences. Totally new competences have been achieved due to new technologies because of the indoor-navigation components which before the project started were completely unknown to us. These new competences are vital for the upcoming steps for the planned business geo7.

Currently naviBee is negotiating with a new potential partner who is a solution provider for indoor localisation solutions on the health care market since years. naviBee/geo7 is aware of the fact that a strong partner is needed who already knows and who is active in the health care market. At the moment a strategic partnership document is in the draft stage. The vision is that both partners together offer a comprehensive product for localisation and navigation purposes for indoor and outdoor in the sector of health care.

With the research activities within iWalkActive geo7 has achieved a technological advance with intelligent and comprehensive navigation systems. geo7 plans to benefit from this intensive project work and wants to expand the research activities in this field and plans to introduce a specific application for the market of social and medical centres.

For this purpose geo7 with a new startup-company called naviBee solutions currently is looking for potential customers (in the field of social and medical centres) for pilot projects, as well as for investors, that can help finance further research activities and the necessary development for a market-ready product.

Table 13: GEO Exploitation Table

Assessment of Alignment Since the beginning of 2015 it was decided to better have two business plans instead of one as it was planned before the project. One business plan covers the Veloped rollator with its electronic motor component and control system. The target group for this customer segment is represented by the private

customer 60-85 years as it was planned before the project. However, at the end of the project it was clear to better assign the software part (navigation system including the tablet) to another target group who represents a complete different customer segment. So the other business plan will include the business-to-business customer segment of health care, especially social and medical centres. This rather wides up the possibilities and chances since the software can be used with or without rollator that means independent from any vehicle. The end user tests confirmed this strategic decision because almost all test persons could not handle well the software on the tablet. Even worse, they did not know what the software is even good for. This shows that in general the private user is not ready yet to use a software application or to see and benefit its advantages.

The business plan for the business-to-business market is in progress (naviBee) but not a deliverable or subject of this project.

Within the project we could greatly enhance our knowledge of different and partly brand-new indoor localization systems and technologies to solve the problems of indoor/outdoor transition which turned out to be much greater than expected and to provide better localization results combining more different technologies than before. Another important aspect was to interface different coordinate systems to one standard data format for doing localization and navigation calculations indoors/outdoors the same way, which in turn allows for a seamless indoor/outdoor system from the end-users point of view.

4 Conclusions This document “Dissemination and Exploitation Report” documents the activities realized to disseminate the project. Because we as consortium have done research and development always with the product in mind we focused dissemination activities to manifest the project into the public. This results in a considerable amount of press articles and even in a TV contribution. Also the presence in new media is documented as well as the papers that has been published and presented at conferences.

For each partner the exploitation statements at the end of the project are shown together with an assessment of the actual exploitation plans against the initial plans. The exploitation plans are structured by type (technical, strategic) and audience (internally to the consortiums partner or externally to a certain community).
