wanda (theatre maker): “These mimes have chosen a huge theme, love, which they’re treating rather marginally. The performance is simple – which has its charm – yet, it only touches the surface. If I may be so bold: drop the dialogue! The physical interaction is ample display of what is trou-bling the characters; there is no need for verbal clarifica-tion. One of my favourite scenes was when the girl went completely rigid. She almost became an object. In their physical performance the actors are very convincing. This really is the strongest feature of the performance. There is a wonderful chemistry between the two of them and that was very pleasant to watch. I would really like to see more.” (EH)

dj amra von PeroXide“I don’t really have a style, but I play old records mostly,” Amra von Peroxide, the only female Dj

performing at the Its Festival Afterparties, says. “I actually try to look different, and I do it by play-

ing everything. I just love music. And I think when you enjoy what you do, you do it the best.” Von

Peroxide grew up listening to rock music. “But people don’t really dance to rock, so now I try to

make it as danceable as possible, or mix it with hip-hop. then people go: I never knew I could actu-

ally dance to this music. I don’t really play techno or house myself, but it depends on where I am

Dj-ing. I decide what music to play just 30 minutes before the party starts.” Intrigued? Check her

out tonight, 11pm at the Compagnietheater. (GM)

things first

I trained at the Rambert Academy from the age of 18. I loved it. training was strict: we were told in no uncertain terms that there was no room for fail-ure. Somehow this was not frightening; our teachers were a dedicated bunch. Compared to today, we had a simple schedule: our days were mainly ab-sorbed with ballet and Graham classes – the em-phasis was on learning physical information. this doesn’t sound very excit-ing, yet it allowed us to focus on technique and to free our bodies. the work was repetitive, routine and improvement was demanded: more flexibil-ity, better co-ordination – things that have proved invaluable throughout my career. All this is a long time ago. today’s students have access to so much more. they are treated as professionals the moment they enter school, but maybe they are expected to run before they can walk. I believe students need time to establish a solid foundation without too many distractions. I sometimes wish today’s students wouldn’t be in such a rush, and would be allowed the time to devel-op into versatile dancers.

The stage is white and spotless. Anne Fé de Boer (HKU), clad in black, is sitting on a stool and gives us a pene-trating stare. She is about to do something important which we are allowed – or forced? – to witness. She is about to end her life. For the rest of the performance we will wander her beguiling distorted mind. A privi-lege as it turns out. After an ironically comical attempt to set herself alight with a match, she squirts empty two containers of red paint, across the white floor. She places her head – winking ostentatiously – in the pool of fake blood. From this position she contemplates her life. Every now and then in her performance, a few tragic characters pass by. why? There’s no explanation. This talented theatre maker’s slightly eccentric per-sonality turns this play into an up front and sincere performance. At the end she sings “Everybody’s gotta learn some time,” and takes a final deep breath. Then the lights go out and the audience awaken from Anne Fé de Boer’s morbid, yet very inspirational world. (JI)

Pulsereview

Hammering on mercilessly, a machine in constant mo-tion, Pulse is a performance that is as relentless as it is rewarding. Directed by Jolika Sudermann of Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, this performance creates an environment in which the players execute the repetitive pounding of movements in parallel to the rhythm of their own pulse. They begin by feeling the beat of their own bod-ies. Touching different pulse points, they gently show us what they feel, tapping it out on a hip or nodding their heads in time. This beat gradually takes over and crescen-dos into movements and music that take possession of the whole body. Pounding their arms, and thrusting their hips in time, they exact physically the pattern of their bodies, the surge of blood through their veins. The performers gaze at us directly as they become increasingly exhausted, but we do not see a message or an attempt at communication. Instead, their eyes are windows to the visceral workings of their bodies. we see no emotion – just a mechanical display of biology. Logic over feeling. (JS)

“Follow me! *Smack!* Shh-hh! Smile!” These are just some of the sounds that you can be expecting when you walk into the dance studio of the Amsterdamse Ho-geschool voor de Kunsten, where the ITs Ensemble week workshops for actors are taking place. In that room, you will find students from seven different coun-tries including Iceland, Great Britain, Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Holland. They have their eyes closed and they’re slowly mov-ing through the room, si-lently repeating their ac-tions. The atmosphere is almost meditative. They are trying to find the right physical response to things they saw just a few hours earlier, when they were exploring the city. Trying to sense its pulse. Under Andrew Loretto’s super-vision, they have started to create unique images,
