“This play, Westkaai by Toneelacademie Maastricht, is mostly about the emptiness people experience and their need to com-municate. Yet they don’t know how and, as a result, they get caught up in all the darkness that surrounds them. Visually, this is quite a simple performance, but this puts the interest-ing playtext into focus. The lighting effectively focused our at-tention on the most important part of the play, which I think was the quality of the acting. The group of actors built very strong characters, and successfully guided them to the end of the play. All characters were very distinctive and all had their own specific physical leitmotif, which made the performance very recognizable. In my opinion, that is the strongest part of Westkaai.” – Niels Lemmens, actor from Utrecht. (AK)

afterparty dj chocolate BrownFor those who missed it: yesterday’s edition of the ITs Afterparty was a musical adventure with dj

Mr. Speak. ‘I am who I am and do what I do’ is Mr. Speak’s motto, and with that in mind he brought

his mixture of soul, funk, hiphop, house, disco, dubstep, R&B, jazz, afro and latin to the (turn)table.

‘A crazy musical evening mix,’ according to Mr. Speak himself. Tomorrow, get ready for dj Chocolate

Brown. He will liven up the Compagnietheater after 11pm with his energetic mix of soulful, funky and

jazzy grooves. “It doesn’t matter if it’s house, soul, funk, hiphop, latin or jazz. Or something along

those lines – I’ll play it!” says Chocolate Brown. He’ll take the audience from the classics to now, with

original and appealing jams, covered with a thick layer of chocolate. Because, he tells us: “everybody

loves chocolate!” (AL)

When I say ‘ITs’, in my head it’s always followed by: The Muppet Show! There are those who cannot appre-ciate the Muppet Show. These often wretched indi-viduals cannot appreciate the never-ending messing about of the Muppets, can-not fathom that when one Muppet is playing a roman-tic nocturne, another feels the need to enhance the performance with a few exploding maracas. And just that messing about is ITs’s charm. The festival is a unique event for watch-ing theatre makers mess about. In the best sense of the word: trying for trying’s sake. From begin-nings without endings to broken records. All these non-conforming whimsi-calities that make theatre exciting. This effervescent creativity of theatre tal-ents often cools down as fast as it came. Let us, the audience, encourage them to keep messing about till the end of their careers! And when so called experts feel that they are messing about, they should take that as an encouragement to mess about a little more. dear theatre talents: to hell with that serious talk. Be a Muppet!

Olivia and John’s son died. He fell, like the oranges fall from the tree in their garden. In theatre text The Orange Dream by Robin N. Duits, the audience is witnessing a dialogue be-tween a father and a mother, who are trying to go back to being husband and wife. Olivia and John address each other in third person singular. When they talk about each other and about themselves, they consistently use the aloof form ‘he’ and ‘she’, which makes the unbridgeable gap between the two very tangible. A gap that is starting to become frus-trating, both for the audience and the characters. The con-sistent use of third person does facilitate exceptions that mark the crucial scenes. Like the little play they act out to-gether, in which John plays the undertaker who is taking Olivia’s measurement for her coffin. Despite the fact that this was a reading rather than a performance, the aloofness fitted the style of the text surprisingly well. Oh, what the h***, I’d call it a performance any day. (JI)

“The terrorists are among us! But there is a solution: brand-ing! Only then will we be able to spot the rotten apples. And the politicians have agreed already.” The actors from Hoge-school voor de Kunsten Utrecht present a confronting play, which addresses the audience in an awkwardly direct way. This graduation performance – Mark Ravenhill’s The Women of Troy, directed by Jeroen de Man – causes great disorder. For having the actors – Anne Fé de Boer, Jiska van Duijn, Martin Willem van Duijn, Hiske Eriks and Djamila Landbrug – rub your nose in the fact that you are responsible for the atrocities in this world, makes you feel rather uncomfort-able. The line between right and wrong is a mere cobweb. The actors – the women in particular – give their all when they show their anger and disgust, but in their display of pain and happiness as well. As the play progresses, their acting becomes more and more hysterical and, as a result, more comical. The end will make you frown: the indignation and great sadness from before, suddenly make way for cha-otic dancing – with pink paint and vanilla custard. (HdJ)

review

“To give the audience a good shaking,” Marcel Harte-veld answers when asked what he is trying to achieve through theatre. He and Johan Fretz make up the double act Gebroeders Fretz. Together they make comical musical theatre. They em-ploy their passion – music and cabaret – to entertain the audience, but they also want to convey a story when they are on stage. “We feel a responsibility to commu-nicate with the audience,” Johan says. “As theatre mak-ers we’re constantly aware of what’s happening around us. By showing this on stage, we are trying to trigger people: force them to reflect upon society.”But the Gebroeders Fretz are mainly on stage because of their passion for the-atre. Marcel lives for music and Johan was born to be a cabaret performer. Half of Toneelschool Amsterdam and the Kleinkunstacad-emie thought they had lost

it when they called in Youp van ‘t Hek to help them with Over Lijken, their first full evening’s show. But Youp ac-cepted. That was merely the

beginning. Both are starring in the group graduation per-formance Look Closer and in their own production Onder-weg. (IdJ)
