Jim Nichols enters his 23rd year as head coach of the men’s track and field team. He works primarily with the middle distance

and distance runners, along with the pole vault and high jump competitors. He is also head coach of the men’s cross country team. Nichols coached the women’s track and field program from 1986 to 1993 and from 1998 to 2000.

Under Nichols the Bombers have won six conference indoor and nine confer-ence outdoor championships, including both titles last season. Nichols was named Empire 8 Coach of the Year following both

the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2007-08. Ithaca has placed in the top five at the NYSCTC indoor meet 15 times and has 17 top-five finishes at the state outdoor meet, including first-ever state titles during both seasons in 2000-01. For that accomplishment Nichols was selected as the New York State coach of the year for each season. His teams have compiled dual-meet records of 19-14 in the indoor season and 16-4 in the outdoor season.

Nichols was selected by USA Track and Field to lead the U.S. senior men’s team at the World Cross Country Championships, which will be held in March in Amman, Jordan. Nichols was the team leader for the U.S. junior men’s team at the 2002 championship held in Dublin, Ireland.

Nichols has coached 29 all-Americans at Ithaca, including the 1992 national champion in the women’s outdoor 5,000-meter run. Before his arrival at Ithaca, Nichols served for two years as head cross country and track and field coach at Plattsburgh, where he coached the 1986 indoor 800-meter run national champion.

Nichols was an all-American cross country runner at North Central College and a member of that school’s national championship teams in 1978 and 1979. Following his graduation in 1979 he was an assistant track and cross country coach at North Central and later was a graduate assistant for both sports at Indiana University.

The Ithaca men’s cross country team has qualified for the NCAA championships five times during his tenure.

Joe GoodsPeedGoodspeed is entering his second year with the Bombers’ coaching staff. He works with the jump-ers. Goodspeed was a two-time All-American in the high jump at Geneseo, placing fourth in the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships and sixth at the out-door championships. During the 2007 indoor season, Goodspeed provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the long jump, triple jump and the high jump. Goodspeed graduated from Geneseo in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in English.

GaBe luVaRaLuvara is in his first season as member of the track & field coaching staff. He has served as the football team’s offensive coordinator for the last two years. Luvara is a 2001 graduate of Indiana (Pa.) where was a all-conference center. He helped the football team to two NCAA Division II playoff berths.

JennIFeR McdonnellA graduate of Hartwick, McDonnell is in her second year with the Bomber staff. She won a state title in the discus in 2005 and qualified for the NYSCTC and ECAC championships in each of her four years of competition. McDonnell earned a bachelor’s degree in biology.

eRIc saMBolecSambolec is entering his second year as a member of the Bombers’ coaching staff. He works with the dis-tance and middle distance runners. Prior to arriving at Ithaca, he was a head coach at the junior college and high school levels. Sambolec previously served as the head women’s cross country and assistant track & field coach at Lansing Community College (Mich.), leading the team to four NJCAA Region XII titles and four top-five finishes at the NJCAA National Championships. . He is a 1999 Ithaca graduate, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and was a member of the Bombers’ cross country and track & field teams. Sambolec received his master’s degree in psychology from Michigan State in 2002, where he also earned his Ph.D. in social & per-sonality psychology with a minor in sport psychology in 2006. Sambolec is a USATF Level I certified track & field coach and has a USATF Level II certification in endurance.

MaTT scHeFFleRScheffler is entering his third season with the Bombers’ coaching staff. He works with the pole vaulters. He set the school indoor and outdoor records in the pole vault while a member of the track & field team at Brockport. He is currently an adapted physical education teacher at Lansing High School and is the head coach of the Lions track & field teams. Scheffler graduated from Brockport in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in physi-cal education

MaRY WallenBeckWallenbeck is in her seventh season with the pro-gram, where she works with the jumpers. She gradu-ated from Ithaca, where she was a member of the track & field and volleyball teams. She spent eight seasons as a varsity track & field coach at Spencer Van Etten High School. Wallenbeck is an assistant coach for the Ithaca volleyball team. Her father is Ithaca College Hall of Famer and women’s cross country and assistant track & field coach William Ware.

WIllIaM WaReWare works primarily with the distance runners. He has coached the women’s cross country team for 19 seasons, leading the Bombers to the NCAA champi-onships on 15 occasions, including a 20th place finish this past season. Ware has been named the Empire 8 coach of the year in cross country in each of the past five seasons as the Bombers captured the conference’s only five championships. Ware’s other responsibilities at Ithaca have included a 16-year stint as men’s swim-

ming and diving coach, nine seasons as the men’s cross country coach, one season as women’s swimming and diving coach and men’s lacrosse coaching duties from 1967 to 1977.

2008-09 outlook

The Bombers enter the season as defending Empire 8 champions in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The team will look to defend their titles and continue to move up at the New York State Collegiate

Track Conference (NYSCTC) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) meets. 34 athletes return from last year’s squad. They will be joined by 23 newcomers.

2007-08 RECAP: Ithaca won the indoor Empire 8 title for the first time since 2004. The Bombers were sole conference champions outdoors after sharing the title in 2007. The team had its best finishes at the NYSCTC Championships since 2004, finishing fifth indoors and fourth outdoors. The Bombers placed 10th at the outdoor ECAC Championships, the best finish in program history. Senior Cory Petermann competed in the NCAA Championships in the javelin.

KEY LOSSES: Ithaca loses nine seniors to graduation, including team captains James Aucoin and James Walker. Aucoin won two Empire 8 titles and a state title in the long jump in his career, and was a six-time all-state performer. Walker primarily competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He placed fourth in the event at the 2008 Empire 8 Championships.

SPRINTS: Sophomore Jeff Wetmore was Empire 8 Rookie of the Year last season follow-ing both the indoor and outdoor seasons. He won six conference titles: indoors in the 55- and 200-meter dashes and 1,600-meter relay, and outdoors in 100- and 200-meter dashes and 400-meter relay. Classmate Max Orenstein was runner-up to Wetmore in both the 100 and 200 at the outdoor Empire 8 Championships. Senior Chris Covino and junior Jon Lin joined the two on the 400-meter relay team that earned all-NYSCTC and all-ECAC honors. Senior Maurice Herring won the Empire 8 title in the indoor 200-meter dash as a sophomore. Other returning sprinters include sophomores Aaron Catlin and Brian Turnbull. Turnbull joined with Covino, Orenstein and Wetmore to set a school record in the 800-meter relay (1:31.96). New additions to the sprinting squad include freshman Doug Koury.

HURDLES: In his first year on the team, senior Dustin James was Empire 8 runner-up in the 55-meter hurdles at the indoor Empire 8 Championships. He also placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles at the conference outdoor meet. Freshman Dan Moloney will also compete in the hurdles.

MIDDLE DISTANCE: Junior Joel Trager was an all-NYSCTC and all-ECAC performer in the 500-meter dash last season. He placed fifth in the 800-meter run at the Empire 8 outdoor championships. Seniors Danny George and Corey Schallek and sophomore Anthony Veroline were part of the 3,200 meter relay team that earned all-state status. The 1,600-meter relay team that included Orenstein, Wetmore, and junior Krasimir Kehayov was also all-NYSCTC.

ITHACA COLLEGEDISTANCE: Seniors Tim Shea and Drew Hodge finished first and

second, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run at the Empire 8 Championships. During the 2007-08 indoor season, Shea was named all-NYSCTC in the 5,000 and all-ECAC and all-NYSCTC in the 3,000-meter run. Junior Scott Walker was an all-state performer in the 1,500-meter run. George finished fourth in the mile run at the indoor Empire 8 Championships. Sophomores Stefan Karkuff and Anthony Palma primarily competed in the 5,000-meter run, with both earning top-10 finishes at the outdoor Empire 8 Championships. Palma also qualified for the ECAC Championships in the event. All five were all-conference cross country runners in the fall. New additions include freshman Daniel Craighead who was 2008 Empire 8 Cross Country Rookie of the Year.

THROWS: Petermann placed 14th in the javelin throw at the NCAA Championships. He was Empire 8 and NYSCTC champion in the javelin throw, and won the Empire 8 title in the discus throw. Petermann also placed fifth in the shot put at the outdoor Empire 8 Championships, and was named Outstanding Field Event Athlete for the meet. He was named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team Sophomore Ryan Taylor was Empire 8 runner-up in the javelin throw, and was named all-NYSCTC and all-ECAC in the event. Junior Thomas Yee was also an all-state javelin thrower. New Bomber throwers include senior Ara Eckel and freshman Rich Lickfield.

JUMPS: Sophomore Kyle Devins was a three-time Empire 8 cham-pion as a freshman: winning the triple jump indoors and the triple and long jumps outdoors. He also won the triple jump at the outdoor NYSCTC Championships. Devins was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team. Fellow sophomore Chris Stahlmann won the high jump at the outdoor Empire 8 Championships, also garnering all-state honors in the event. Sophomore Chris Wilber placed in the top-six in the high jump at both Empire 8 meets. Koury will be a new addition to the team’s jumpers.

POLE VAULT: Junior Andrew Brown set new Ithaca records in both the indoor pole vault (4.55 meters) and outdoor pole vault (4.50 meters) in 2008. He was Empire 8 champion during the outdoor season. Brown was Empire 8 runner-up indoors, and also was named to both the all-ECAC and all-NYSCTC teams.

MULTI-EVENT: Petermann was all-NYSCTC and all-ECAC in the pentathlon in the winter and in the decathlon in the spring. Senior Dana Breeden finished tenth in the decathlon at the ourdoor NYSCTC Championships. Koury will also be an addition to Ithaca’s multi-event competitors.

2008-09 SCHEDULE: The Bombers open the season at the Cornell Relays, and will compete there five times in 2008-09. Ithaca will also travel to meets hosted by the College of New Jersey, LaFayette, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Tufts, and will participate in the Penn Relays. The Bombers host the annual Ithaca Invitational on March 28. RIT will host both the Empire 8 Championships and NYSCTC Championships during the indoor season. Nazareth will host the outdoor Empire 8 meet, with St. Lawrence hosting the outdoor state meet. The indoor and outdoor ECAC Championships will be hosted by Tufts and Springfield, respectively. The NCAA indoor meet will take place at Rose-Hulman, with the outdoor meet at Marietta.

cHRIs coVInoSprints, Sr.; Melrose, Mass.2007-08: Covino was a member of the 400-meter relay team that was Empire 8 champion during the out-door season. The relay squad also earned all-NYSCTC (second place) and all-ECAC status (fifth). Indoors, he was a member of the 800-meter relay team that was all-NYSCTC

(second) and all-ECAC (seventh). Individually, Covino earned all-state honors by placing eighth in the 200-meter dash (22.95) at the outdoor championship. He placed third in the event at the Empire 8 Outdoor Championship. Covino also placed fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.38) at the conference meet. 2006-07: Covino was the Empire 8 runner-up in the indoor 200-meter dash (24.19). He finished 15th at the state indoor championships in the event. Outdoors, Covino finished 23rd at the NYSCTC Championships in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.75. High School: A 2005 graduate of Melrose High School, Covino recieved six varisty letters in his four years on the indoor and outdoor track & field team. Personal: A clinical exercise science major, he is the son of Samuel and Ruth Covino.

TIM sHeaDistance, Sr.;

Huntingdon Valley, Pa.2007-08: Shea was Empire 8 cham-pion in the indoor 5,000-meter run, finishing at 15:25.87 at the confer-ence meet. He also earned all-state status in the event by finishing third in the event at the NYSCTC Indoor Championships (15:12.00). Shea

earned all-ECAC and all-state honors in the 3,000-meter run by finishing third and seventh, respectively, at the championship meets. Shea opened the outdoor season with a career-best 15:02.85 performance in the 5,000 at Princeton, qualify-ing him for the ECAC Championship. He qualified for the state meet in the event, where he placed 14th. At the Empire 8 Championships, he placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:43.50. 2006-07: Shea earned a pair of all-state honors at the indoor championships, placing third in the 3,000-meter run (8:42.81) and eighth in the distance medley. The distance medley team earned all-ECAC honors, finishing seventh at the ECAC Championships with a time of 10:32.44. He also earned a pair of all-state honors at the NYSCTC Outdoor Championships, placing fourth in the 5,000-meter run (15:29.48) and sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:36.24). Shea was the Empire 8 runner-up in the steeplechase. 2005-06: Shea recorded three top-10 finishes in the 3,000-meter run indoors, includ-ing a fifth-place finish at the ECAC Championships with a time of 8:53.08. Chester, N.J.2007-08: Petermann qualified for the National Championships in the javelin throw, where he placed 14th with a throw of 174-2. He was Empire 8 Champion in the javelin (197-07) and the discus (126-07) and also placed third in the high jump and fifth in the shot put. He was recognized as Empire 8 Field Athlete of the Meet at the championship. Petermann was NYSCTC champion in the javelin, and

also placed third in the decathlon and fifth in the discus. Petermann was named to the all-ECAC team in both the javelin and decathlon, placing second and sixth, respectively at the Outdoor Championships. During the indoor season, Petermann earned all-state and all-ECAC honors in the pentathlon, placing fifth at the NYSCTC Championships and seventh at the ECAC Championships. 2006-07: Petermann was Empire 8 runner-up in the pentathlon, and earned all-state honors by placing sixth at the NYSCTC Indoor Championships. Outdoors, Petermann earned a pair of all-state hon-ors, placing fifth in the javelin throw and sixth in the decathlon at the state meet. He finished second amongst Empire 8 competitors in the decathlon. Petermann earned all-ECAC in the javelin. 2005-06: Petermann placed third in the conference and fifth in the state in the javelin. Petermann also placed fourth in the conference and 10th in the state in the pentathlon with a score of 4,602. He placed second in the conference and 13th in the state at the indoor penathlon championships with a score of 2,724. He also placed third in the event at Richard Stockton’s Osprey Open with a season-best time of 10:34. During the indoor season, Abbott placed seventh in the mile run at

the Empire 8 meet. 2006-07: Abbott placed 14th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the state outdoor champion-ships, placing fourth in the conference. At the state indoor championships, Abbott finished 17th in the 5,000-meter run (16:06.01). High School: A 2006 graduate of Lansing igh School, Abbott was coached by Jason Eade. He earned four letters as a member of the indoor and outdoor track & field teams and competed at the state championships his junior and senior seasons. Personal: The son of Jeff and Lori Abbott, he is a sound recording technology major.

andReW BRoWnPole Vault, Jr., Tinton Falls, N.J.2007-08: Brown set new school records in the pole vault in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Indoors, he vaulted a record-breaking 4.55 meters at the ECAC Championships to place fourth overall. He also placed fourth at the

NYSCTC meet and was Empire 8 runner-up. During the outdoor season, Brown registered a school-record 4.50 meters in winning the event at the Ithaca Open. He was Empire 8 champion in the outdoor pole vault, with a height of 4.45 meters, .40 meters higher than any other competitor. Brown placed eighth at the state meet and ninth at ECAC meet during the outdoor season. 2006-07: Brown set a new school record in the indoor pole vault in just his fourth collegiate meet with a mark of 4.40 meters at the Army Open. He earned all-state honors by placing fifth at the NYSCTC indoor championships. Brown placed second among Empire 8 competitors, earning second-team all-conference status. Outdoors, he earned all-ECAC honors by finishing eighth at the ECAC Championship, equaling his personal-best with a mark of 4.40 meters. Brown recorded six top-10 finishes in the outdoor season, including a victory at the New Jersey Invitational. Distance, Fr.; IthacaHigh School: Craighead is a 2008 graduate of Ithaca High School. He was a team captain and also lettered in cross country. Personal: An exercise science/physi-cal therapy major, he is the son of Harold and Teresa Craighead. He is also a member of Ithaca’s cross coun-try team, and was Empire 8 Rookie of the Year in the fall.

2007-08: As a freshman, Devins was Empire 8 Champion in the triple jump during both the indoor and out-door seasons. Outdoors, he also was Empire 8 long jump champion in the long jump and NYSCTC champion in the triple jump. His triple jump of 14.12 meters at the state meet was a season best and met the “B” standard for the NCAA Championships. Devins earned all-state status in both jumps during both seasons, and placed 11th in the triple

jump at the ECAC Outdoor Championships, and also qualified in the long jump. Devins was also a member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic team. High School: A 2007 graduate of Ausable Valley High School, Devins was coached by Keith Ford. He was a two-time sectional champion in the long and triple jump events, and qualified for the state championship in both events. He placed ninth in the 400 and 11th in the 200 . At the Outdoor Championships he placed 12th in the 400. 2006-07: Herring won a pair of Empire

8 titles during the conference indoor champion-ships, winning the Empire 8 200-meter dash (23.95) and running with the conference’s top 800-meter relay squad. The 800-meter relay team also earned all-NYSCTC honors by placing fifth at the state meet. Outdoors, Herring was the Empire 8 runner-up in the 200-meter dash, running a season-best time of 22.99. He was also a member of the conference runner-up 400-meter relay team. 2005-06: Herring recorded five top-10 finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dash events as a freshman. He had a top finish of second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash at the Hamilton Spring Invitational with respective times of 11.82 and 24.30. in the 10,000 He ran 31:56, a new personal record. 2006-07: Hodge won his second-straight Empire 8 title in the 10,000-meter run. He also earned all-ECAC status by finishing sixth in the event at the Outdoor Championships, and all-state status by placing third in the NYSCTC Outdoor Championship. His time of 32:11 at the state meet was a season best. 2005-06: Hodge won the confer-ence title and was the NYSCTC runner-up in the 10,000-meter run with a career-best time of 32:09.57 during the outdoor season, and placed fourth at the ECAC outdoor championships with a time of 32:40.15. He placed third in the conference and 10th in the state in the 5,000-meter run at the indoor championships with a season-best time of 15:50.40. Hodge placed second in the 5,000-meter run at the Ithaca and New Jersey Invitationals during the outdoor season, clocking in with a season best time of 15:30.35 at TCNJ. He placed sixth at the Outdoor Championship at 1.75 meters. Jakubek competed in the event at both NYSCTC meets, jumping 1.82 meters indoors and 1.83 outdoors. High School: Jakubek was a member of the indoor and out-door track & field teams at Monroe-Woodbury High

School. He was county and Section IX champion in the outdoor high jump, placing third in the state. Indoors, he was county champ and a national championship qualifier. Personal: The son of Mark and Jill Jakubek, he is a physical therapy major.

2007-08: James was runner-up in the 55-meter hurdles at the Empire 8 Indoor Championships at 7.58. He qualified for the indoor ECAC Championship in the event, where he placed 20th. James was also a member of the basketball and soccer

The relay was also second at the NYSCTC Championships and fifth at the ECACs. Individually, Lin placed third in the 55-meter dash at the Empire 8 Indoor Championships.

He also placed in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the outdoor conference meet, finishing third and fifth, respectively. 2006-07: Lin won the Empire 8 title in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.78. Lin recorded four top-10 finishes during the indoor season, including a second-place finish in the 55-meter dash (6.71) and a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (24.16) at the RIT Invitational. He was honored as Empire 8 Athlete of the Week following the meet. Outdoors, Lin earned all-state and second-team all-Empire 8 honors in the 400-meter relay. High School: A 2006 graduate of Taipei American High School, Lin was a two-year team captain and was a three-time 100-meter dash champion in the conference. ITHACA COLLEGErunners-up. The distance medley team also earned all-ECAC status. Trager was again a member of two outdoor all-state relay teams—the third-place 3,200-meter relay and the fifth-place 1,600-meter relay. High School: A 2006 graduate of Westwoord Regional High School, Trager earned first team all-league his senior year in the 600-meter dash. Personal: A cinema and photography major, he is the son of Arthur Lee and Ruth Trager.

scoTT WalkeRDistance, Jr.; Midland Park, N.J.2007-08: Outdoors, Walker was an all-state performer in the 1,500-meter run, placing eighth with a career-best time of 4:01.99. He placed fourth in the event at the Empire 8 Championships. 2006-07: Walker earned a pair of all-state honors at

the NYSCTC indoor championships, placing sixth in the 1,000-meter run (2:35.99) and running with the fourth-place 3,200-meter relay squad. He earned second-team all-conference honors in both events. Outdoors, Walker placed 10th at the state meet in the 1,500-meter run with a season-best time of 4:05.27. High School: A 2006 graduate of Midland Park High School, Walker was coached by Jack Ferriday and Jeff Hackett. He earned seven varsity letters as a member of the indoor and outdoor track & field teams and served as team captain. Walker won the outdoor league and county titles in the 800-meter run. He also was a member of the cross country team. Personal: A business administration major, he is the son of Donald and Gale Walker. He is a member of the cross country team and his brother, James, is a 2008 graduate of Ithaca.

JeFF WeTMoReSprints, So.; Bemus Point2007-08: Wetmore was named Empire 8 Track Rookie of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. During the indoor season, Wetmore was part of the 800-meter relay team that was named All-ECAC for finishing seventh at the championship meet. He was also

named all-state in three events; the 800-meter relay, the 200-meter dash, and the 1,600-meter relay. Wetmore won both the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash at the Empire 8 Championships and was runner up in the 1,600-meter relay. Wetmore was named Rookie of the Meet. Outdoors, Wetmore was named all-ECAC in two events, the 400-meter and the 200-meter dashes. He gar-nered all-state honors in two relay events, the 1,600-meter and 400-meter, and two individual events, the 200-meter and the 100-meter. He was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Meet, where he won the the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter titles and was runner-up as part of the 1,600-meter relay team. High School: Wetmore is a graduate of Maple Grove High School. He was a two-time team MVP, setting school records in the 100-meter dash (11.10), 200-meter dash (22.15), 400-meter dash (51.10). Personal: A student in the exploratory program, he is the son of Vernon and Diana Wetmore.
