Presents
Welcome to all Parents/Carers and boys to a new year, 2020. This is an exciting time and the
start of a new decade, time when we all can stop and reflect on our best success and attrib-
utes for a moment and work toward to being a better person, making the most of what lies
ahead in 2020 and beyond. I extend a warm welcome to all our new families and staff who
have joined the Epping Boys High School community.
Coronavirus
I sincerely thank all families who have been to China for your diligence in following the
Department of Education Policy on attendance. The school has followed the directives of
the Departments of Education & Health in keeping all of our students families informed.
HSC Results
Congratulations to the class of 2019 on their success in the HSC. Our Dux was Haotian Li
with an ATAR of 99.9. He also achieved First Place in Japanese Continuers. Congratulations
to his Japanese teacher Mr Gibb on this outstanding result. Well done to all boys who
achieved their personal best over many subjects. A summary of our high achievers is includ-
ed in the newsletter. To all our teachers of HSC classes in 2019, well done and thankyou to
your commitment to teaching and to the boys.
Year 7
Our new Year 7 boys have experienced a rapid transition to high school at their camp last
week and were able to start the process of bonding as a year group under the guidance of
Mr Leggo and Mr Dziedzic. Thankyou to all staff who attended the very wet Year 7 camp; an
enjoyable experience had by all.
School Uniform
Well done to our boys on how they have presented in full school uniform. The support of
our uniform policy by our parents/carers is greatly appreciated. Remember full uniform in-
cluding black leather shoes and correct socks is expected everyday.

A huge welcome to all our new students, especially our new Year 7 cohort who will graduate from our school in 2025! Without a
doubt the start of 2020 has been challenging for many in our school and broader community with some facing the aftermath of
bushfires, floods and the exclusion conditions associated with the coronavirus for our students and their families who have trav-
elled through China. We are incredibly proud of the understanding, independence and resilience shown by these boys as they
are delayed in their start to the 2020 school year and look forward t welcoming them all upon their return.
In particular, welcome to those families who are joining our school community for the first time. In a large school like Epping
Boys High School one of the challenges can be finding who is the correct person to contact regarding your son/ward. As a gen-
eral guide contact:
Class Teacher
For initial questions, progress information or concerns relating to a particular class
Faculty Head Teacher
For ongoing assistance in relation to a particular subject
Year Adviser
For general wellbeing, advice and support
Learning and Support Teacher
For issues related to student learning and additional support to access the curriculum
Head Teacher Wellbeing
For significant or ongoing concerns related to student wellbeing or health care issues
Deputy Principal/s
For serious academic or wellbeing concerns or to escalate an issue
The Principal is responsible for the educational leadership and management of our school, please contact the school office to
arrange a meeting time if needed.
When phoning to speak to a staff member please be aware that as they are often teaching they will not necessarily be available
when you call or may not be able to call you back immediately. An email to the school email address can be forwarded to the
staff member concerned where required. It is not appropriate to turn up to the office to see a staff member without an ap-
pointment.
The list below provides more specific information about staff roles at our school. We look forward to working together to sup-
port your son/ward in achieving his goals in 2020.

Welcome to Year 7 Parents
Welcome to all our Year 7 parents. We hope your son/ward has really enjoyed their start to high school and that they fully partici-
pate in the activities offered at Epping Boys High School. On Thursday 13th February we have an evening where parents and
teachers of Year 7 students are able to touch base enabling parents to give a face to the names the boys discuss with them. This is
a great evening and a time for adults to discuss the learning of their sons, it is requested that students do NOT attend this even-
ing. I encourage all parents to be present in the Edmund Barton Centre as it is also a time to meet with other parents and perhaps
bolster friendships.
Student Drop Off and Pick-Up
It is vitally important for the safety of all students that boys are dropped off and picked up outside of school grounds. In the morn-
ing parents/carers should encourage their son/ward to make their own way to school or if they must be driven to school then
they should be dropped at the top gate in the designated drop off zone. Students are then able to walk down Parson’s Pathway
into school. This alleviates car park congestion, makes coming to school safer for all and encourages independence and responsi-
bility. Likewise, in the afternoon, I am sure you will appreciate how dangerous it is for multiple parents to be driving through the
school whilst over 1300 boys are trying to make their way home. In the afternoon the top gate is closed. NO PARENT SHOULD TRY
TO ENTER THE SCHOOL TO PICK UP THEIR SON. If you must pick up your son in the afternoon then you need to arrange a place
outside of school grounds to do so.
Assessment Booklets
All year groups are receiving their Assessment Schedules and Assessment Guidelines this week. These documents map out the
expectations and the timings around assignments, exams and assessments tasks. We encourage all families to thoroughly read
and seek to understand these documents.
Rugby Visit
St George’s High School from Vancouver is visiting Epping Boys High School on the 25th of March to compete against our school,
and our rugby team will play them whilst on tour later this year. We would like some of our senior soccer or rugby boys to provide
billets for the team from Vancouver. See Mr Martin for a note.

2019 High Achievers Assembly
It was lovely to see so many of our boys returning for the 2019 High Achievers assembly. Year 7 and 12 were the audience for the celebration
of success as were many of the recipient’s parents. The boys are very proud of their achievements and we all wish them well as they continue
their learning experiences.

Year 7 Camp A Great Aussie Bush Adventure
Year 7 have made a wonderful start to high school.
In just their second week at Epping Boys they head-
ed off to Kincumber for three soggy days of exciting,
challenging, and bonding experiences.
The boys took on a variety of activities which tested
them individually and collectively, of which I will
highlight a few. In the “Leap of Faith” the boys
placed their lives in their peers’ hands as they
jumped off a 10-metre platform and a team of six
belayed them below. Terrifying for many, the boys
encouraged each other and drew strength from
their belief. In the “Survivor” challenge the boys
had to work as a team to make their way across a
pit of water using planks of wood. Any mistakes
would prove costly (and wet)! Finally, I could not
possibly do a recount of the camp activities justice
without the mention of the rite of passage that is
the famed “Lost Island” (Mud Run). Exhilarating,
physically tough and featuring a variety of obsta-
cles, there was simply no way to complete the
course without dripping in mud. But the smiles on
the boys faces as they completed this unique activi-
ty said it all.
There were also opportunities for the class to pit
themselves against each other. A real highlight was
to see the boys’ camaraderie as they surrounded
Mr Leggo to perform a frenzied school war cry,
something which we look forward to seeing in ac-
tion back at school and on the sporting field. As we
returned to school in near-cyclonic conditions, the
boys on my bus spontaneously burst into a rendi-
tion of the school song. The closing refrain of this
song (and the school’s motto) is “Strive to Achieve”,
and the whole cohort of boys certainly enacted this
spirit in their time away. Mr Leggo and I are incredi-
bly proud of the way Year 7 acquitted themselves,
with multiple camp instructors commenting on
what a mature and pleasant bunch of boys we had;
especially considering the wet conditions.

Year 7 Camp A Great Aussie Bush Adventure
I would like to extend a huge thanks to Mr Leggo, Year 7 Adviser, for the fantastic organisation involved in camp and
leadership of this fine bunch of students. Thanks must also go to the other staff who attended and ensured the boys
had a safe and enjoyable time. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the fantastic Year 10 Mentors who attended and so
creditably and responsibly supported their younger peers.
Once again, I commend Year 7 for the positive engagement they demonstrated whilst on camp and urge them to ap-
ply this same optimistic and resilient attitude towards their learning every day at school.

Wellbeing and BTM (Boys to Men)
BTM is an excellent opportunity for students to gain a greater understanding of who they are, what they represent and how
they can impact positively on the community, both locally and at home. I highly encourage students and parents to actively
engage in the program and discuss lesson content at home each fortnight to appreciate the values that we teach at Epping Boys
High School and the values we uphold in the Epping community.
The Year 10 Mentors were selected at the end of 2019. The Mentors have an essential role in the BTM program, whereby they
are there from the beginning with our Year 7 students offering support and direction through the early years of their schooling.
It is our belief that the mentors will continue to guide these Year 7’s throughout their schooling until they reach the end of their
middle schooling and hopefully, they become mentors themselves.
Year 7 have had a significant start to the year with a memorable camp where friendships were forged and an understanding of
the Epping Boys High School community was formed. Each class has started to discuss the idea of Growth Mindset in their BTM
lessons. Growth Mindset is a belief that students who believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strate-
gies, and input from others) have a growth mindset. These students tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset
(those who believe their talents are innate gifts). Students will be given a diverse range of opportunities to reflect on their own
learning whilst developing their understanding of the importance of a Growth Mindset.
Other information and important dates:
• Year 7 students have all received information and consent cards about upcoming immunisations. The scheduled dates
for the immunisations are 13/03/2020 (HPV dose 1), 24/7/2020 (dTpa) and 21/09/2020 (HPV dose 2). Parents and carers
are requested to return these consent cards to the Administration Office as soon as possible. No immunisations will be
given without a completed consent form.
• Please contact Mr Gordon if there has been any recent medical updates or changes for your son.
• Games Club has begun and will take place every lunchtime in F5. Students from all year groups are invited to attend.
• Year 7 will take part in an incursion “Escape From Worryville” on Friday the 6th of March. Created through a series of
workshops and close consultation with students from three High Schools, Escape From Worryville is a show developed
by teenagers for teenagers! Comedy and tragedy combine in this uplifting feel-good story of hope and empowerment
exploring issues of anxiety, depression, worry, sadness and belonging.
• Year 8 will take part in an incursion “Smashed” on Friday 21st February. Smashed is a hard-hitting interactive multi-
media performance that brings the possible immediate consequences of underage drinking to life. The characters
health, safety, relationships, and career aspirations are all put in jeopardy by the decisions they make as result of the
peer pressure they face to engage in underage drinking. By interacting with the characters and offering them advice
the young people in the audience discover ways to deal with peer pressure and empower each other to make healthy
life choices.
• The Epping Boys High School Wellbeing website is available to access for all students and parents:
https://eppingboy-h-schools.nsw.schooltv.me/
• All students are reminded to take care of themselves, especially during the hot summer days. All students have been
reminded to always eat breakfast in the morning before coming to school, drink plenty of water throughout the day and
choose sensible activities during break times depending on the temperature.

The trial process will start from week 3 onwards and students are informed on assemblies about when and where they need to be.
Connor Mooney
Connor recently competed in the 2020 Barça Academy Asia Pacific Cup held in Delhi. His team got through the group stage, won their semi-final but lost in the final – making them U15 tournament runners-up, which was a great achievement. Connor was also chosen out of the 500+ competitors to be the only player to speak at the opening ceremony, was one of his squad's captains, and was a flag bearer at the closing ceremony - all of which was a big honour for him.
