Prayer of the Week

Lord God open our eyes to recognise, and

our ears to affirm the prayers of our ‘others’.

Embolden us, that we might…

Challenge ‘others’ rather than collude,

Respect ‘others’ of diverse views,

Affirm ‘others’ from divergent traditions,

Celebrate ‘others’ whose skin tone is unlikeour own

Embrace ‘others’ we wouldn’t choose,

Be sensitised to the many tongues of ‘others’

Attend to ‘others’, who are culturally

dissimilar,

Appreciate ‘others’ who are generationally

different

Be inspired through the little ‘others’ we so

often overlook

We ask Lord, hear their prayers…

Quote of the WeekIf we could see the miracle of a

single flower clearly, our whole

life would change.

Breakfast in Schools

The Ministry of Education have

not yet provided us with anyinformation about this proposed

new initiative despite the very

public announcement of itsintroduction so I cannot

comment on how this may be

delivered. If you do not think

that this is a problem in thiscommunity or school

community, I have to add that

children turning up to school, not having had breakfast is not

unheard of,  even in our wee

Principal’sCommentary:

school. There are some children

that are atypical of the children

that this initiative is trying tohelp.

In my humble opinion though,

providing breakfasts in schoolsis only a solution for assuaging

the child’s hunger and will not

in any way ensure that they

don’t come back to schoolhungry again tomorrow.

The real solutions to the issues

of child hunger in this countryand even in our local setting,

involve addressing some pretty

deep social issues and making

some hard calls and obviously politically unpalatable decisions.

In this community, in this town,

even in this school, there arethose that struggle to make ends

meet and sometimes, by the end

of the pay week, there is very

little left in the cupboard. This isa situation where I think that

this programme will be well

spent public money. There areother situations, where pouring

money in will only exacerbate

the problem and reinforce the

dependencies behind it. I agreethat the kids come first. I agree

that whatever the politics, the

kids need to be fed, but that isn’t

the answer to the problem. Thatis only applying a bandaid to the

symptom.

Regardless of what happens, once the Ministry sends some

information out to us, the board

will discuss it, consult with our community and then make an

informed decision.

Mass

Another reminder that we have a

whole-school parish Massscheduled for Sunday the 16th of June.

All school students and their

immediate families are expected

to attend. This is an obligationagreed to as a part of enrolling

at St Patrick’s School. All

families are encouraged to invitetheir extended whanau along as

well, as Mass is an opportunity

for the School to participate in

the Catholic Parish communityand for the wider “Church”

community to interact with the

school and to gather and pray

together and to

celebrate the commonalities of

 purpose.

Students are expected to attendin full school uniform and to sit

together at the front on the left

hand side so that their singing isclearly heard.

Maths Competitions

Since the last newsletter,Sumdog hosted another Nation-

wide online Mathematics

competition. As the senior room had won the first

competition, we felt obliged to

compete in the second one.

Like the earlier one, thecompetition required students to

answer 1000 questions each

over 7 days of competition.Points were awarded for speed

and accuracy. There were 67

schools participating and 2791

students involves.We won – again.

David Xie finished 6th out of all

students. He had an averageresponse time of just 2.7

seconds and an accuracy rate of

98%. That is blisteringly fast.

All of our students finished allof their questions and all

contributed towards the team

effort in some manner. Specific

students that also had greatresults with accuracy and sub 4-

second response times were

Noah Oudemans, MorganOudemans, Sally Xie and

Patrick Kemp.

While there are only so many National competitions that we

can enter in, I do note that

Sumdog have set up a

Canterbury regional competitionfor early July and it would be

good to compete in that particular event.Congratulations.

Uniforms

I do need to point out that StPatrick’s School does have a

uniform policy. It is a wee bit

disheartening to see kids turningup to school, repeatedly

wearing non-uniform items.

This is not fair to those students

that do wear the the correctuniform or to those parents that

make the effort and that take

 pride in their child’s appearance.

I have no problem with someslight,

Education Act 1989 to ensure

that all of our students are at

school on time and any studentthat is repeatedly and

habitually late is considered by

the Ministry to be truant and inneed of some agency

assistance. I therefore am

obliged to involve agencies if I

consider that a problem exists.I have resisted doing that so

far, but as you may have

picked up, my patience on thismatter is running thin.

If you are offended by these

comments and you feel that

they are directed at you, thenthey probably are.

Deal with it. Follow the law

and get your child or childrento school on time.

Just how I see it folks.

Don’t be offended.

Congratulations andwelcome to our two newBoard Members, KathyLarsen and Claire Taitand we thank all of those that stood. The

our school and arecalled on to make

significant decisions thatdirectly influence whathappens for ourstudents, in terms of staffing, resources, programmes and

strategic direction.I do have to thank our

two outgoing boardmembers; Stuart Price

and Stephen Patterson.Stuart has been on theBoard for a year or soand has contributed histime to the school inmany other ways aswell. He and Stephenhave a range of practical

skills and experiencesthat have been well

received on the board.Stephen has been on

the board for whatprobably seems like avery long time for himand his knowledge andexperience will be sorelymissed, although he will

probably be called uponto help us progress one

or two of our projectsthat he has beeninvolved in over theyears.Thank you both so verymuch for all that youhave done and that youcontinue to do.

A reminder that board of

trustees meetings arepublic meetings and

everyone is welcome toattend. If you wish toaddress a board meetingor have somethingtabled, then you will

need to get permission, preferably in writing, inadvance from the board

Chairperson.

Message from the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees

Hello and God Bless to you all.

As current Chairperson of the St Patrick's Board of Trustees I would like to thank those

parents who were nominated and stood for our Board elections. It was very heartening

to see that we had plenty of interest which necessitated an election. This is very pleasing

as many bigger schools with a much larger parent community found themselves not

requiring an election.

I believe that it goes to show that parents who choose to send their kids to our school all

have an active and healthy interest in their child's education and only want the best for

them. I can assure you that the newly elected Board members want the best education

for all our kids and that we will do our best to ensure that the education they receive at St

Pat's meets your expectations.

Our special character, as a State Integrated Catholic School, set us apart as we live and

model those Catholic values which are at the heart of all we do.

A traditional Gaelic blessing to you all as the year marches steadily on.

"May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

 May the sun shine warm upon your face;

the rains fall soft upon your fieldsand until we meet again,

may God hold you in the palm of His hand."

emporary interpretations of the

he uniform rules, but not

epeated flouting of them. I haveo problem with kids wearing

ackets, hoodies and coats to and

rom school, as long as they arelso wearing correct uniform.

As there is a policy in place, this

means that the school can legally

nforce it. If we as parents haveo spend money on uniforms, it is

nly reasonable to expect that all

f our students wear them.also expect all students to be in

ull correct uniform when

ttending mid-week Mass or

Friday assemblies. Not doing sorom now on may result in

tudents receiving consequences

rom our behaviouralmanagement procedures.

Promptness

Classes start at 9:00am. Alltudents are expected to be seated

n class ready to go at

:00am when the bell goes.Lately, we have had several

tudents turning up at 9:15, 9:30

nd sometimes even later than

hat. Sadly, it is always the sametudents.

There is no polite way to say this,

o forgive my bluntness, but

your inability to get your child or

children to school on time (which

could be characterised as acomplete disregard for   your

child’s educational welfare) is

beginning to test my patience andmy sense of Christian charity and

goodwill.

One of the reasons that lateness

annoys me so much is that it is sodisruptive to the rest of the class.

It doesn’t matter how unobtrusive

a student tries to be when theysneak into class late, they still

cause a disruption.

Another reason, is that I believe

that you are setting a terribleexample for your child/ren and it

makes it even harder for us to get

your child to work to schedules, deadlines or timeframes because

they see no reason to.

If those reasons are not enough,

then read this next bit verycarefully: I also find that the

majority of those students that are

habitually late (for whatever reason) are precisely those that

can least afford to miss out on

school. Maybe being habitually

late (or absent) is one of thereasons that they are not where

they should be academically?

I have a responsibility under the

The boat in the logo represents the Church.

The main mast of the boat is a cross and its sails are the shape of the sun which

represents the Eucharist.

On the sails are the letters IHS, the first three letters of the Greek name for

Jesus.
