Young Garrett Jones and Fairhope’s Bryce Dulabhan, along with Pensacola’s Jeremy Pate, are raging a battle for the points lead with a mere 6 points between them. The new format for the series has met great success. T he Mods, Sports- man, and Bomb- ers are also set to do battle tonight. Speak- ing of Sportsman, let us remind you, new division sponsor Beef O’ Brady’s, on Nine Mile Rd. will stay open late for your visit after tonight’s races. We also thank Bomber Division sponsor Cheryl Nelson of Butler’s U Pull-It, who will be helping us entertain some 400 youngsters here next Tuesday for our Annual “Kids Day.” It’s free. Tonight we have an exciting race program, and our hope is that after you leave, you will tell your fami- lies, and friends about us. This racing season is just shy of the halfway point, and although we have already had some great moments, we believe the best has yet to come. Before we get into what lies ahead, let’s recognize some of the accomplishments achieved already. C anadian driver Ryan Litt opened the 2013 Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Car Series with his first victory here on March 22nd. Just a few weeks later, The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East made their first visit to 5 Flags. Daytona Beach driver and University of Florida student Ben Kennedy won his first K&N race. (Ben won his 2nd race this past Saturday at Bowman-Gray Stadium in NC) And 2 weeks ago, Georgia’s T.J. Reaid won his fist Buddy’s Home Furnishing Blizzard Race, outdueling a pair of Texans, Casey Smith and Chris Davidson. S peaking of kids, get those bicycles polished up, as our annual Kids Bike Races are scheduled for July 12th. W e’ll be back in 2 weeks for the 2nd of 4 Buddy’s Blizzard events, now a part of the all new Southern Super Series. Super Late Model racing in the south is without a doubt more competitive than it has ever been. And of course, all roads lead to the 46th Annual Snow- ball Derby, scheduled for December 4th thru the 8th. Reserved seat renewals are under way until August 1. W e hope you enjoy it here at 5 Flags Speedway, and remem- ber, our suggestion box is always open. Pro Lates Join Bombers, Sportsmen & Mods #7 June 7, 2013

By Chuck Corder Driver Robert Balkum comes across as Mr. Nice Guy. Always willing to lend a helping hand on a rival’s engine, he has taken an honest, albeit, peculiar approach. After missing a Bombers feature earlier this season and getting DQ’d in two others, the 35-year-old son of Army man Rickie understands his mission.

Out of the points race and the track title, which would be a first for Balkum here, he has decided to play the role of friend rather than foe. “We’re gonna try to push Tracy Soles or Michael Nelson to the champion-ship,” Balkum said of the two driv-ers that currently sit fourth and first the points standings, respectively. “Soles, he’s a good kid that’s going into the military at the end of the year.

If that philosophy seems a little coun-terproductive for his own success, well, then you haven’t experienced the generosity of Robert Balkum.

Listen to the top three in Victory Lane tonight. Chances are they have gotten there with an assist from Balkum Automotive at some point during the week.

“I could run up front depending on the car,” Balkum boasted. He sits 12th despite misfortunes that have during the first 3 months of the season.

A dirt-track demon, Balkum stalked Southern Raceway in the early 2000s in Milton, he did well with a pair of track championships. Balkum is still looking for his first career feature victory here.

He loves bringing his wife and two kids to the racetrack and believes he’s corrected a fuel cell problem that had been giving him fits all year.

And just because Balkum has made his sacrificial declaration for the season, when the nitty gritty arrives, he won’t be afraid to flex his muscle against either Nelson or Soles. That’s where I’m gonna get ’em.”

No more Mr. Nice Guy. -Read all of Chuck’s story on our web site.
