For the last 5 months or so Mike Forbes andsome willing helpers have been cleaning up andbuilding some new additions for theMaungaturoto Skate Park.

Thanks to funding from the Country Club he'sbeen able to build some new ramps but unfortu-nately it wasn't long before the first one was

used by a motorcyle, it's also been tagged, peo-ple have attempted to light it on fire and the in-side support beams have been smashed.

Please can we as a community stress the impor-tance of looking after our local facilities. Mikeand his boys have worked long and hard in theirlimited spare time to give something back thatthe children can play on with their bicycles andskateboards.

If you can help Mike and the boys please [email protected]

    Thanks

Christmas is coming .Christmas, perhaps the most popular of all the annualfestivals will soon be upon us. Families will gather toshare over the Christmas holidays, gifts will be ex-changed, lots of specially prepared food will be con-sumed, homes will be decorated with paper stream-ers, and coloured lights will once again adorn theChristmas tree. Its all great fun and although it re-quires a lot of planning, preparation and expense, most of us wouldnt miss it for the world. It would be easy however, to get so caught up withthe outward celebrations of this wonderful time ofyear that we could easily forget what it is we are reallycelebrating. Christmas is, of course, the recalling ofJesus birth at Bethlehem. In that little child, thegreatest miracle on earth took place. God, the su-preme Creator of the universe, came to earth, andbecame a person like us in order to demonstrate thatHe loves each and every one of us. This amazingGod who is all powerful, all Holy and all loving, camein the form of His Son Jesus and offered Himself tobe our Saviour. In our self-centred, independent arro-gance, most of us dont think we need a Saviour, butwe dont need to be rocket scientists to see we aredestroying our planet and seem powerless to preventthe increasing moral decay of our nation, the disinte-gration of family life, marriage break downs, and theincrease of crime and violence both at home and

abroad. We may blame the politicians, world leadersor someone for the mess we are in, but the seeds ofgreed, selfishness, pride and anger are in all of us,and we are all playing our part in bringing about theutter disaster. But God foresaw this before time began, and plannedto send His Son to save us, restoring us back to fel-lowship and intimacy with Himself. It is as we openour hearts and minds and acknowledge what God hasdone for us, in Jesus, and begin to entrust our lives toHim in faith that the Christmas story begins to makesense. The angels on the hillsides at Bethlehem an-

nounced to the shepherds, Dont be afraid, I bringyou good news of great joy...for to you is born...aSaviour, He is Christ the Lord!May our Christmas be deeply enriched as we recallwhat God has done for us in this His infant child, andembrace His love more and more. It is the touch anddaily experience of His love that is the greatest gift wecan ever receive. May God be born in us again thisChristmas time, so that His love will grow.

    - Rodney O Dunlop

Advent Season to be observed .Anglicans throughout the Northland region will de-scend on Maungaturoto on the evening of Sunday,November 30 th to celebrate Advent. Advent Sundaybegins the traditional season of Advent, five weeksbefore Christmas, and marks a period of preparationas the Festival of Christs birth draws near. Christians

look forward in Advent to the coming of Jesus as ababy in Bethlehem, as the Saviour at Calvary, as theRisen Lord at Easter and as the Reigning King in thefuture. Each year Advent Sunday has been observed by aspecial gathering somewhere in Northland, but thisyear it is the turn of the church at Maungaturoto tohost the event. The service begins at 5pm and willhighlight some of the ancient tradition associated withAdvent, together with Advent Carols. Afterwards aspecial supper will be served for everyone attending .

For a number of years families have enjoyed a fewdays camping at Batley, possibly unaware that a por-tion of the area between the foreshore and road ispart public reserve, and part privately owned. Thepublic and road reserves at Batley are not designatedcamp sites and Council has existing bylaws to dealwith offenders.Last Christmas the number of campers in the bay in-creased to the extent that some families had estab-lished camp sites within a few inches of the road.Batley is limited in terms of parking or camping spaceand the increased demand for camp sites on the re-serve area severely restricted parking and access onpublic reserves for anyone hoping to enjoy a day atthe beach.Council met to discuss the concerns with access, health, safety and security at Batley and decided inthe interests of public safety and welfare to suspend

camping indefinitely. No Camping Signs will be erected at Batley prior toChristmas 2008 and monitored over the holiday pe-riod to ensure everyone complies with them.Persons found camping on reserves will be orderedoff; repeat offenders may be fined or prosecuted un-der section 215(5)(b) of the Kaipara General Bylaw2008.If you require further information please contactCouncils customer services centre on 09 439 7059.Kaipara District Council

Never Mind Mother GooseThis years pantomime has been a great success for allconcerned. The cast of mainly children rose to their taskwith courage and finesse that would have seemed to havebeen beyond them. But as real troupers of the boards

opening night was a remarkable event with colour and ac-tion that can only happen in a pantomime. And the adultmembers of the cast performed very well too!Congratulations to Helen Morton-Jones for her directionand those most important people who man the sets andprops who are known as stage crew.If you think or possibly know someone who would like towrite next years pantomime, contact a committee memberfor more information.

Unfortunately the occasion was marred by some little cre-tin who thought he could win the raffle by stealing the prizebefore it was drawn on the final night. In your neighbour-hood there is someone who has no scruples about takingfrom children, the theatre and the community in general. Ifyou, the person responsible for this act, are reading thisnewsletter, we have nothing but abhorrence for you. Thelocal police have been most responsive to our concerns. Thanks Trevor.

Fawlty TowersYes, we believe Basil and crew are coming to your theatre.

This was the man to whom even the simplest problem was

a major crisis, and saw guests as being in the way of thesmooth running of the hotel.

Auditions are being held at the theatre on Sunday, De-cember 7 th. Contact Dennise Brownlie or a committeemember for further details. Cast must be available for allrehearsals and the show is planned for March 2009 withup to nine shows over three weeks.

This could be your opportunity to move out of your com-fort zone for an enjoyable romp on stage. See you at theauditions!

Theatre Development Work has just about been completed on the workshopextension to the theatre. This has been a marvellousachievement by all concerned. It is an asset that will en-able the theatre to produce shows with even more exper-tise and proficiency than before.Landscaping is our next project, with designs for a grandentrance and the comfort of the most important of people,

our guests and audience. The working bees will continue on Saturday morningsfrom 9.00 am for about three hours. See you all then.

On 19 November, Garden Club members traveled tothree contrasting gardens all interesting in theirown way.

The first was beautifully laid out with immaculatelawns and colour co-ordinated gardens. The gar-dens led to the top of the hill and the house whichhad a magnificent view of the sea.

The second garden had many paths under a tallcanopy of mature trees, natives and exotics. Alongthe edge of the drive there were areas of differentcoloured day lilies and many varieties of floweringshrubs. The paths to the house led to a large areaplanted with mature trees a tree lovers delight.

The third garden was a cottage garden which in-

cluded an orchard and vegetable garden with a beehive. Featured were paw-paws, bananas, plums, pears, mulberries and pineapples. To finish we weretreated with tea and home baking. A great end to theday.

On 10 December at 11.30 a.m. members are tomeet at Pam and Ron McCallums home for a Christ-mas pot luck lunch and, no doubt, also a meanderaround their beautiful garden.

.Summer is in full swing so pay attention to wa-tering, weeding, feeding and spraying.

Sow successive summer vegetables for a plen-tiful supply to last over summer. Potatoes willrequire mounding up to protect those newplants.

Further applications of fertilizer will help in-crease the size of the fruit on trees.

Maintain spraying of roses and fertilize and wa-ter. Cultivate and weed around flower plants.

Strawberries will need netting to protect frombirds.

    Kia ora, Hi everybody,

Our term has continued on its happy and busy way. Wecontinue to have batmen flying about outside - they even

put on a show on the stage by the sandpit to a very appre-ciative audience. Our pet day was remarkable mainly forits absence of pets, but we made beautiful sand saucerswith flowers from home and our playcentre garden. Duringthe next session, our sandpit received a digging overthanks to our CSW, Jacqui and Kerrie, as it had become abit compacted from its winter water-logging. Thanks guys,it looks a lot healthier. Plans are also underway to replaceits walls and upgrade it, hopefully over the summer.

We enjoyed visiting the school pet day looking at all thebeautiful animals. Equally appreciated were the schoolsandpit and playground!

One session saw our strawberry patch being weeded.Compost was added, and carrots, beans and corn wereplanted. Since then we have watched them come up. Wehave some dedicated garden waterers who are doing abrilliant job of keeping the garden watered every session. Our strawberry plant inspectors, who are learning to tell ayucky green strawberry from a yummy red one. are alsovery dedicated. They are managing to leave some straw-berries to ripen.

Our art calendar pictures are beautiful butterflies, fish, cat-erpillars created with dye dabbed on water. Really good

effort from all those involved. Other activities we've en- joyed were a very slippery watery zoom slide on a warmmorning, threading fruit onto a (blunt) skewer to make fruitkebabs at morning tea (these activities went down well)and an athletics day on the school field.

Centre maintenance has seen our shade tree removed. Itsroots were starting to lift concrete, and its leaves and twigswere good at blocking drains and being a nuisance. Someof us are sad, and some glad to see it go. Thanks to Steveand Frances who did a tidy job of removing it, even sweep-ing the entire concrete area clean. We appreciate the time, effort and skill that went into its removal. Hopefully we can

come up with another way of shading the area over sum-mer.

Also replaced has been our carpentry trolley - thank youRussell. The new cupboard should be an inspiration to ourbudding woodworkers. And the broken bed has been re-paired - thanks B.J.

Our sessions run 9.30am - noon, Wednesday and Fridayfor 0 - 6 year olds. We offer three free visits - come alongand see if Playcentre is for you, we'd love to see you.
