New Building I am pleased to say that progress on the new building is going well and we will be moving in gradually over the period before Christmas. We will then have the full site available, including our new 4G pitch.

Ready Steady Cook Round Last night saw the last semi final round of this year’s Ready Steady Cook competition in which members of Alpha House competed to find their representative for the final round in which they will compete against the other houses.

All teams worked hard to produce their dishes and the majority stuck to their budget of £4. However there could only be one winner, and the team ready to represent their house in the final is Ms Thorndyke & Waniya Zeeshan 7U. Congratulations to them and to all for creating an excellent level of skilled dishes and a wonderful atmosphere!

It was a great turn out by Alpha and their supporters. Teams created a lovely range of dishes to include chicken curries, Caesar salad, roast chicken with couscous and peppers, spicy tuna couscous, pan fried duck breast and French onion soup. A special mention must be given to Radu and Miss Pugh for their w o n d e r f u l l y p r e s e n t e d dish comprising of aubergines and courgettes- a thing of beauty!

U/13 Girls Rugby vs. Robert Clack & Boswells School

On Wednesday 14th October the U/13 Girls Rugby Team travelled to Robert Clack for a triangular fixture, such fixtures have been arranged as the league that they play in is so vast that we have to travel as far as Southend and Chelmsford, as well as all across East London. The girls first took on a big challenge with Robert Clack who are well known for their strong sports teams and despite some great runs from Aecy Asemota (2 tries) and Roxie Smart, Robert Clack came away with the victory. Player of the match was Aecy Ase-mota, our only Year 7 in the team. Next they played Boswells, a less experienced team but no less talented. This was a well fought game which saw some great tackles made by Aecy and Iman Chekkour, who also found themselves on the score sheet alongside Roxie but unfortunately the team lost by one try! Player of the match was Roxie Smart. The team made significant progress from the first game to the last so I look forward to seeing the amount of progress they can make over the season.

Travel Green Team Win Gold!!!!!!!!!

The Travel Green Team were awarded a Gold Award again this year and on Thursday 15th October, six students along with Mrs Fage and Ms Smith went along to the Camden Centre in Kings Cross to take part in the annual STARs Accreditation Seminar.

The STARs scheme is run by TFL to encourage young people to promote sustainable travel to and from school for instance walking, taking the bus and leaving the car at home or at least being dropped a distance away to stop congestion outside of school.

It was a very long day but the students enjoyed meeting the students from other schools within the London area, who had also come along to collect their awards. There were lots of activities to help promote ideas within schools and get the students talking to each other and sharing their different successes and how to promote them.

We shared our success with our Primary Toolkit. Our Travel Plan is now being tested out in Melilla in Spain and even Bangladesh and China!

One of the highlights of the day came when Ross Butcher, who is TFL’s Education and Training Project Manager, introduced Oaks Park as the school who inspired the idea of the Youth Travel Ambassador Scheme and that without our vision and drive the scheme would not be as successful as it is. To say we were very proud is an understatement!

Thanks to all students, parents and staff who help us by travelling sustainably. We aim to keep trying to improve congestion outside of school and to get more students to cycle and walk to school with lots of different activities planned for the coming year.

Harry Potter Studios Media and Film Studies Visit

The Media and Film Studies Department whisked 46 Muggle-Borns off

on a magical adventure to The Harry Potter Studios, in Watford.

The students were enchanted by the ‘cupboard under the stairs’

where Harry lived before discovering he was a wizard; they gazed at

the costumes of Hermione Granger and Professor Snape and walked

along the hallowed halls of Hogwarts, as the film sets were explored

by staff and students. Broomsticks were flown, the flying Ford Anglia

was driven and students even participated in a wand duel,

practising their magical prowess against each other. Our Oaks Park

Muggles were also able to see the studios 20,000ft² expansion,

including the original Hogwarts Express steam engine and a

recreation of Platform 9 ¾.

The intricate props, animatronics and sets gave the students an insight into the world of film.

The behind the scenes footage as well as a script to screen class enabled our

budding directors to see firsthand the creativity and craftsmanship involved and we hope

it inspires them with their own projects! It was a magical experience and one the

students utterly enjoyed.

Redbridge Handball Competition

Oaks Park Boys competed in the U15 Redbridge handball competition on Monday 19th

October. Against fierce competition, the boys demonstrated great team work and energy to

get through the group stages and make into the semi finals. The Year 9 team lost their semi

final match against Isaac Newton in a close game, however they should be very proud of

their performance as they were playing teams a year older then themselves. The Year 10

boys won their semi final in a very close game against Seven Kings. The boys got better as

the competition progressed and by the semi finals, were really hitting their stride. The final

was another close game against Isaac Newton. It went through normal time and extra time

without a winner, meaning golden goal was left. The winning goal was scored by Mantas in

10E with a spectacular counter attack goal. Well done to the Year 10 boys who now go on to

compete in the London regional finals and represent Redbridge at the Youth Games in

summer 2016.

Year 10 Netball

The Year 10 Netball Team had their first fixture of the year this week against Woodbridge. The Oaks Park girls won three out of the four quarters with some excellent interceptions and great attacking play. Unfortunately they couldn’t quite close the deficit in the final quarter and lost by 2 goals! Final score 16-14. Player of the match went to Kenyah Johnson for her determination and high tempo play but Buena Demiri was a close second with her clever play in front of goal. The girls’ next game is away to Caterham on 18th November.

BUILDING NEWS

The new building is nearing completion. We hope to take ownership of the building towards the end of November.

Most of the flooring is nearly completed and furniture is being assembled and fitted. Work has begun on the new artificial pitch and the fencing to the pitch is half completed.

The Changing Rooms are tiled and the flooring is going in this week.

Hopefully we will be fully installed in the new building in January. Every student in the school will have some lesson time in the new building when we move in, so there will be a lot of timetable changes.

Cycle Reward Trip to Lee Valley Velopark

On Monday 12th October thirteen Students and two members of staff were lucky enough to go on a trip to the Lee Valley Velopark which is located in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. This was a reward trip from the London Borough of Redbridge for taking part in the Boroughs Big Pedal scheme. This measures cycle use to and from school over a certain number of days and we man-aged to come 1st!

We travelled by mini bus to the park, when we arrived the students were taken and kitted out with helmets and bikes for the first event of the day which was mountain biking. They had a 10 minute briefing, laying out the rules and how to stay safe and then they were off! There are 5 miles of outstanding trails to cycle and they all had fun although we did have one casualty but once he was bandaged up he was fine!

The students were then taken back to the hire centre to swap their bikes to road racers and were taken for an hour around the road circuit. They all agreed that this was much more fun than the mountain biking probably because they can reach pretty high speeds!

Once all the bikes and equipment were taken back we went into the Velodrome, which is the fast-est track in the world, and watched the cyclists going around the track whilst eating our lunch.

This was a fabulous trip and all the students enjoyed it immensely so thanks to all who cycled in during the Big Pedal because without all your support these trips cannot happen.
