Dear Parents/Carers
Another term has almost finished!
It has been a very productive time and the teachers have finished all the reports
which are available on Compass. Please read the reports and discuss them with
your children. There will be parent teacher meetings in Week 3 of Term 3 which
will be an opportunity for you to discuss reports with the class teachers.
The Year 3/4 campers and the Year 5/6 campers have all returned safely with lots of
happy stories about their adventures. Thank you again to all the parents and school
staff who attended. Camps would not be possible without the support.
Congratulations to Naden De Luca and her team of helpers who organised the
Chomp and Chew this week. It all ran very smoothly and the students enjoyed their
special pizza lunch.
Today we have the free dress day for ‘A Flicker of Hope’ which is a foundation that
has been established to raise much needed funds for research into
Neurofibromatosis. This will be done in conjunction with the Murdoch Children’s
Research Institute. It is their aim, through meaningful research and subsequent
treatments, to give all people living with Neurofibromatosis not just a flicker of
hope but a much brighter future. Zoe Petropoulos, Manningham Young Citizen of
the Year has started the Foundation and will be coming to assembly on Friday so
that the EarlyAct leaders can present her with a cheque.
We will also farewell Fay Davidson at assembly, wishing her all the best in the next
stage of her life!
I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing holiday! I look forward to seeing you in Term 3!
Kind regards
Julie

We all had so much fun doing gymnastics and learning new skills. One of the
things we loved doing was forward rolls and cartwheels. We also practised
our balancing, skipping, doing bridges and landing in the motorbike stance.
Each lesson started with warm up and some fun games. One of the teacher’s
name was Ella. We were all sad when it finished.

YEAR 3 / 4 CAMP
On Wednesday 19 June to Friday 21 June, the Year 3 and 4 students from
Donburn Primary School went to Camp. We went to Camp Manyung which is
in Mt Eliza.
We all met in the school hall at 8:45am and the buses left just after 9:00am.
The trip to Camp Manyung took around an hour and we watched a movie on
the bus while we travelled.
When we arrived, we took all the bags off the buses and then we went into the
Recreation Room and waited while our rooms were being prepared. While we
waited Sam and Ellen greeted us and they told us all about Camp Manyung
and the rules they had.
We were then told what cabins we were in and who was in our cabins.
Everyone was very excited and we couldn’t wait to go into our cabins. We
raced to our cabins and started unpacking our sleeping bags and other bags.
Some of the activities we did were Flying Fox, UHF Radios, Giant Swing, Low
Ropes, Tree Rolling, Bike Riding, International
Games, Bush Cooking, Frisbee Golf and
Initiatives.
All the activities were fun and some were scary.
Our class liked the Giant Swing the best.
In the Giant Swing we had to put on a helmet,
harness and safety glasses and then we were
told to climb up to the top step of a ladder.
The staff member
attached us to a rope
and then asked us to
step off the ladder
and then we swung in
the air. The rest of the
people pulled the rope
which made us go
YEAR 3 / 4 CAMP
higher and higher up to 18 meters in the air. Once we got there we pulled a
rope and we were released from the top rope. We then dropped and swung in
the air while we screamed!!
3R really enjoyed going on camp we learnt how
to look after ourselves and how to work and play
in teams and we also tried lots of new activities
that we had never done before.
Camp was FUN!

YEAR 3 / 4 AT CAMP MANYUNG
On 19 June, the Year 3 and 4 students and teachers went to Camp Manyung,
which is located in Mt Eliza. The purpose of camp was to get outside, enjoy
some activities together, make new friends, build on our independence and
overcome our fears.
When we first got to camp, we gathered in the Recreation Room and Sam and
Ellen (the instructors) talked to us about Camp Manyung and their values.
They took us on a tour in our minds about where things are located. We found
out where we would be sleeping for the next two nights, and who was
sleeping in our rooms with us. Everyone was buzzing with excitement!
We did a lot of fun activities. The activities were Giant Swing, Flying Fox, Bike
Education, UHF Radios, Initiatives, International Games, Frisbee Golf, Tree
Rolling, Bush Cooking and Low Ropes. The most popular activities for 3K
were Giant Swing, UHF Radios and Gaga (International Games).
On the Giant Swing, when you pull the rope down you get a big fright and
adrenaline rush as you fall down and do a GIANT swing! Some children said
they even saw some animals like dolphins and whales while they were up
there!
The UHF Radio activity was really fun. Firstly you get split up into groups and
each group gets a walkie talkie with a sheet of questions to solve. One of the
questions was ‘what is the speed limit at Camp Manyung?’ The children had
to walk around the campsite to find the answer. Once you know the answer,
you press the side button on the walkie talkie and speak into it. You need to
tell them your team name, the answer and then say “over” at the end.
In Gaga, the game starts by throwing
the ball in the air and everyone says
“GA, GA, GA!” Then the game starts. It
is like dodgeball. The ball needs to be
hit with an open hand so it knocks
another player in the pit below the
knee. If you hit it twice, you are out.
YEAR 3 / 4 AT CAMP MANYUNG
If you hit someone above the knee, you are also out. If you hit it outside the
pit, you are out. It was really exciting when the parents and teachers joined in
because they were really good!
The night activities included the Night Walk, Red Faces and the Soft Toy
Competition. The performers in Red Faces performed singing, jokes, acting
and dancing. The judges were Mr Ryan, Ms Tsang and Cassandra. To get a
high score from Ms Tsang, you needed to wear clothing that she liked.
Cassandra was a really nice judge and gave generous scores. With Mr Ryan,
you just need to be grateful for what you get, he’s a very tough judge! The
teachers even did a dancing performance to The Nut Bush! Miss Kiel, Miss
Hartman-Smith, Miss Wong, Miss Veis and Miss Hubble danced and Grant
played on the keyboard and sang the song! 3K thought that Miss Kiel was the
best dancer and should have won because she actually had the reddest face!
Isaac from 40 was one of the hosts and said “well, that was embarrassing” at
the end of the teachers dance. The teachers got a negative score from Mr
Ryan!
Overall, all of the students, parents and teachers had a wonderful time having
fun and doing awesome activities. We wish we could have stayed there for
longer!
By the class of 3K.
On 19 June, Year 3 and 4 students, parent helpers, education support staff
and teachers went to Camp Manyung. It took us roughly an hour and 10
minutes to get there by bus. Once we arrived, we were greeted by Matt who
explained all the rules of Camp Manyung. Then, the teachers let us unpack
in our cabins and spend some time with our friends.
We started our activities on the first day. Some of the activities were the
flying fox, low ropes, baking damper, the giant swing and tree climbing. All
the activities were outdoors, and we all spent a lot of time working together
as a team to complete them.
When it was time to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner each group took turns in
preparing the dining hall. We had to put plates, cups and napkins on the
tables and then we had to clean the tables once everyone was finished. On
the first night, we got to go on a night bushwalk with everyone. We saw
some nocturnal animals like owls. On the second night we had Red Faces
and lots of students participated. Mr Ryan was a very hard judge and the
highest score he gave someone was only a 4.5! Some teachers even
performed the ‘Nutbush’ and Mr Ryan gave them -3!
We loved our time at Camp Manyung and we’re already looking forward to
next year’s camp!

YEAR 3 / 4 AT CAMP MANYUNG
Stay tuned for the next Donburnian for Year 4 giving us their Camp Manyung
reports.
YEAR 5 / 6 AT CAMP CAMPASPE
Challenge Course (Mud Challenge)
The Challenge Course was a fun addition to camp as it required teamwork.
Some of the challenges included: The Great Escape, the Mud Run, the Pole
Forest and the Wall. The Great Escape is an activity where there were
pedestals and planks, the aim was to place the planks on the pedestals to
form a bridge and escape. It was really fun! The Mud Run is as it sounds.
There was a muddy pit and you just had to run through it. Overall, the
challenge course was one of everyone’s favourite activities.
By Damien F, Joel B, Gilbert Z, Charlie D, Zoey R, Joel B and Isabella T.
The Disco
Everyone had such a wonderful time singing and dancing at the disco. A lot of
people lost their voices from singing their favourite tunes (Shotgun, Watch Me
Whip and Crab Rave) and there was a throng of people dancing on the stage
and podiums. People got lollies and treats for dancing and singing. Overall
the disco was fun and everybody had a good time. We were all so tired and
hot after all the fun we had!
By Emmi K, Daniella K, Conrad L, Jai A, Dakota S, Tyler L and Matthew H.
Bush Walk
One of the activities at camp was the Bush Walk. We learnt lots of things
about nature, such as types of plants, animals,
trees, fungi and other things. Fungi and trees have
a symbiotic relationship, which means they help
each other to survive. We saw lots of animals,
including: rabbits, kangaroos, spiders and birds.
We learnt a lot of things we didn’t know about
nature and the bush. Overall, everyone had an
amazing time.
By Jordan L, Thomas H, Omar A, Gabe T, Allie H,
Chloe F, and Anny.
YEAR 5 / 6 AT CAMP CAMPASPE
Low Ropes
For the low ropes course, we needed to break into groups of 3 to complete
the 12 sections of the course. There were 2 spotters in the group, whilst the
third person completes the course. The course was very wet and hard to
complete. The course was impossible to do without any spotters. You had to
finish 12 obstacles, some were easier than others. The obstacles included
rope, wire and wood. You weren’t allowed to touch the ground. The courses
challenged your balancing, flexibility and teamwork skills. We found it hard but
fun as well.
By Erin L, Charlotte M, Laura W, Terence T, Matt L and Jedd W.
Splash
One of the days on camp was raining and we couldn’t go outside. We got split
into 3 groups and headed off to our area. Our group was sent to the Barn and
then got sorted into teams. We made names for the teams such as: Chicken
Nuggets, Splatoids and Chicken Tenders. We played mini-games to earn
points and the team that got the most points got to choose first from the piles
of supplies to build their contraptions. The contraption had to protect the water
balloon we received when it got thrown down the abseiling wall. Three water
balloons survived the drop and the others sadly died. On the last day, the
balloons that survived, were thrown at the instructors and Mr K.
By Vaness Y, Gia A, Jayden Y, Muqi, Carissa and Claire.
Bush Craft
At Campaspe Downs we did an activity called Bush Craft. In the activity, we
learnt how to build a survival shelter. We used tarps, bags, ropes and so on.
The instructor taught us how to do a figure 8 knot and a D knot. We got split
into groups and everyone contributed to build the shelter. The instructor gave
us tips and constructive feedback. In conclusion, Bush Craft was a fantastic
and fabulous activity. Everyone contributed and had fun.
By Tara, Julian, Alvin, Ken, Chris and Michael G.
YEAR 5 / 6 AT CAMP CAMPASPE
Rock Climbing
Rock climbing is a fun activity. We all tried our hardest to get to the top of the
wall and for some of us it was our first time participating in an activity like this.
There were three sections. The red, green and yellow. On our first climb we
were forced to go to the first square - the red one. It wasn’t that high but it was
cold! On our second attempt most of us tried to go to the top, but not a lot of
us were successful. From our group, the only people that went to the top were
Jessie and Josh. They were both amazing climbers. At the end of the activity
we got to see some kangaroos. It was a great experience for all of us and a
fun one too.
By Anson, Askash, Will P, Xavier M, Cookie, Cici and Jayzen.
Bus Trip
On the way to Campaspe Downs Adventure Resort we stopped at Hanging
Rock and luckily no one disappeared! :-) We climbed to the summit which had
an amazing view. After that everybody was excited to jump back on the bus
and arrive at camp, which was another 20 minutes away. On the way back
from camp we stopped at the Organ Pipes National Park to eat lunch. There
were awesome rock formations there that are over 1 million years old! We
continued the bus trip back to school and a lot of people were trying to sleep
but everyone was still chatting with excitement!
By Aaron, Harrison, Hani, Ayden and Jianshan.
Possum Glider
We were harnessed up and ready to FLY! The team was lined up on a big
rope ready to pull me up. I had to make a split second decision, do I go
straight up? Spin up? Or fling up? I chose to be flung up! The instructor said
“Ching your bling!”, so I squeezed all of my clips on my harness. Then she
yelled “GO!”. I ran like lightning and I flew up so high I felt like a bird! It was an
amazing day. I had so much fun.
By Stazi, Rose, Aisha, Katherine, Jarrah, Will D and Sadra.
YEAR 5 / 6 AT CAMP CAMPASPE
Abseiling
Abseiling is the mystic sport that defies gravity. This sport was introduced to
the Year 5/6 Donburnians at Campaspe Downs. Many people conquered their
fears, strolling down the tall abseiling tower. Before you were allowed to enter
the abseiling you had to put on a safety harness to make sure you didn’t hurt
yourself. Lots of people doubted themselves, but many encouraging people
helped others conquer their fears and show themselves that they can be
brave. It was very exciting and overall the experience was amazing. We gave
it a 10/10 and we’d recommend it to anyone!
By Samantha, Xavier, Josh A, Luke H, Ehsaam, Luke B and Maya.
Campfire
At the campfire, we all settled down on logs around the flames. Clarrice and
Stevie, our instructors, taught us some songs that we sang altogether. They
split us into 2 groups, Ham and Eggs. Later on, Clarrice sent Stevie off with 3
other children so that Clarrice can choose an object. Stevie had to guess by
reading Clarrice’s mind. Soon after, we had to walk back to Campaspe Hall
because it was raining. Overall we had a fabulous time.
By Ella, Jamie, Abby, Tanvi and Penghui.
The Giant Swing
The Giant Swing was a thrilling adventure that
everyone got to participate in. You went on the swing in
pairs and you could see an amazing view of the lake
and beautiful greenery. It was suitable for everyone,
even if you were afraid of heights. You could decide
with your partner how high you wanted to go. You felt
comfortable because you were swinging with your
friend beside you as you went down. The feeling was
exhilarating
and shocking
rolled into one.

YEAR 5 / 6 AT CAMP CAMPASPE
Flying Fox
The Flying Fox was an activity which 4 people came down a zipline at a time.
Everyone was harnessed up as they flew down the 100m zipline at lightning
speed. Everyone was feeling a little nervous but that soon turned into
excitement. Just as you were about to jump off the platform it felt like you
were a plane taking off the runway. As you landed, everyone felt proud of
themselves, especially Nathan as it was his first time! We all wanted to go on
the flying fox again and again! We’d all like to say a huge thank you to the
helpful staff that made our experience at PGL Campaspe Downs the best!
By Moosa, Zack, Nathan, Tyan, Archie, Josh, Asher and Ellie.
Organ Pipes
It was a long walk there and back. We had to walk down a really steep hill.
Exhausted, when we reached the viewing point, we were astounded to see
the natural wonder in front of our eyes. There were 25 metre long pipes made
of volcanic rock that apparently went 70metres into the hill. We were standing
there admiring the scenery when the teachers instructed us to bunch together
for a group photo! Say “cheese!”. Then we raced back up the steep hill, with
our legs aching, and finally reached the seating area. The Organ Pipes are
significant because they took many years to form. Flowing lava moulded
those shapes and now that the volcano has disappeared it is a tourist icon!
By Melody, Ashley, Nishtha, Saani and Alina.
Food
While we were on camp we ate in the mess hall. We lined up in our groups
and waited until we could go in. Then when we were at the tables we got our
food. On the first night at dinner we had fish and veggies. The fish was okay,
the breadcrumbs were a bit soggy. On Wednesday morning, we had hash
browns, spaghetti, toast and cereal. We had hamburgers for lunch! They
tasted good but were too small. At dinner we had pasta,
and we got to choose out of carbonara, bolognaise or
Napoli sauce. We also had garlic
bread and salad. On Thursday, for
lunch we had jacket potatoes with
bacon and cheese! Chicken
schnitzel with veggies and salad
for dinner was delicious. For
desert we had sticky date pudding,
chocolate cake and on the last
YEAR 5 / 6 AT CAMP CAMPASPE
night we had strawberry mousse. Overall the food was pretty good. Our
favourite meal was the jacket potatoes.
By Emma, Alicia, Ching, Kyle and Aryan.
Hanging Rock
On our way to Campaspe Downs we went to Hanging Rock, a famous
landmark. The huge rocks were amazing and the view was pretty. Many
people took lots of photos. When we arrived at the top of the mountain, we
saw rolling hills, tall grassy trees and farm houses with cows. Going up was a
good experience but some might say it was tiring. On the way up we saw
some Australian native plants and animals. We went down the mountain
where we ate lunch and saw a kangaroo. For many students it was the first
seeing a wild kangaroo. We then got back on the bus and left for camp.
By Jessie, Erika, Chermaine and Ariana.
Sports Night
On the first night of camp we had a sports night. There were 4 games that we
would rotate to play: Soccer, dodgeball, basketball and Flinch. When we
played soccer, there were two teams lined up on opposite sides of the hall.
We were all numbered, then Ms Koh would call out random numbers and we
would try to score a goal. It didn’t matter which goal you scored! For
dodgeball we had two teams and then Mr. K would say “go!”. You a throw the
ball at the other team to get them out. Mr K threw it like a fireball! Xin stayed
at the back because she was scared of Mr K’s fireball. When we played
basketball we did some shooting drills and then played the game Golden
Child. Sadly, nothing funny happened but we really enjoyed it. (Thank you
Mr Whitehead!). For Golden Child, one team shoots and the other team runs.
Flinch is a game when the middle person throws the ball to a person and if
they catch it, they stay in, but if the baller pretends to throw the ball and the
person flinches, they are out. The game went pretty quick because everyone
was getting tricked too easily! We enjoyed sports night!
By Riana, Xin, Leo, Katie, Charlie, Seth and Sebastian.
Red Faces
Red Faces is a talent competition where the children perform songs and acts.
There are 3 judges. A nice judge (Eve Diamond), an in-between judge (Chris
Sampson) and a mean judge (Mr. K). Each judge gives a score out of 10
points, leading to a total of 30 points. This year the winner was Sophie P who
sang Mercy by Shawn Mendes. Sophie won with a score of 30. Each child
can audition several times which enabled Sophie to also come in 2nd with a
duet of Shallow with Gilbert Z. 3rd place belonged to Jamie B who played a
rendition of the Jimi Hendrix classic, Purple Haze. There were also many
other wonderful songs and acts that didn’t get a winning spot by still deserve
some acknowledgement such as: S.O.S. an ABBA song performed by
Donburn’s Senior Choir and the Crab Rave by Vaughan, Chris, Asher,
Richard, Xavier, Jai and others.
By Titan, Trent, Michael C, Sean and Jazmyne.
