WelcomeWelcome to Warialda High School’s newest staff member, Mrs Helen Young, pictured in front of the schools new sign, donated by the P & C . Mrs Young has taken up the chair as Relieving Principal over the past two weeks and next year will be in the seat as Deputy Principal. We all wish Mrs Young all the best at our school. If you would like a meeting / appointment with Mrs Young please organise this with tour staff in the school’s front office.
Meet the Deputy PrincipalHello,My name is Mrs Helen Young and it is with great pleasure that I have been appointed as Deputy Principal at Warialda High School. I want to use this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. I am originally from Mount Gambier in South Australia, went to university in Melbourne at Monash University studying Mathematics, taught in 2 country high schools in Victoria before spending more than 2 years travelling around Western Australia and down the centre. Upon returning to Victoria, I took up a mathematics position at Wesley College. After 3 years I moved to the North Coast of NSW settling in Emerald Beach, north of Coffs Harbour. I taught at Grafton High for 8 years then transferred to Woolgoolga High and have been there for 19 years. I have been Head Teacher Mathematics for the past 8 years and now look forward to many happy years here as your children’s Deputy.
My interests include a love of cats and AFL, with Geelong being the team I support, along with being involved in the community through Rotary, in particular. I have 2 sons, who have left home; one residing in Darwin and the other a Civil Engineer in Coffs Harbour.
I am looking forward to becoming a part of the Warialda community and would welcome any opportunity to chat with parents whether it be down the street or over the phone.

NEWS FROM ITALIANWhat better way to celebrate the end of a great year of Italian than with food. This celebration could not have happened without the help of Jack Williams’ Nan, Mrs Joan Nieddu. Mrs Nieddu taught us how easy it was to make the traditional pasta dish gnocchi. Gnochhi, is a dish of little dumplings made from potatoes, semolina, flour, or a combination of these ingredients. We learnt how to roll the flour until it was smooth. After it sat for a while then rolled the pasta using a gnocchi pasta machine and a more traditional method of rubbing the dough onto a serrated board. Gnocchi is a labour of love and we sure enjoyed making it. The gnocchi, was then served with a rich tomato sauce. The tomato sauce recipe was not shared with us as it is secret family recipe. Thank you again Mrs Nieddu.

Six Practical Ways to Manage Stress in the School HolidaysSchool holidays can be a happy time, but they bring their own pressures to individuals and families. Parents may feel stressed as they balance time between work and home, maintain a family routine, and manage the additional financial strain Christmas and the New Year can bring.
Children may find changes to regular routines cause them to feel stressed, isolated, and in need of support. This is particularly true for children with added challenges like Autism Spectrum Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. These simple steps to reduce family stress come from the Bower Place Complex Needs Clinic in Adelaide and are based on their extensive work with families.
•Encourage connection: We know that strong, supportive relationships help us manage challenges and for young people, social relationships are essential to wellbeing. While it’s okay to take time out for themselves, encourage children to keep in contact with friends over the school holidays.
•Balance structure and freedom: Children need boundaries that are consistently followed and balanced with age appropriate freedom. Maintain a structure that includes a bedtime/curfew and wake-time, without being too rigid.
•Encourage independence: The school holidays are a perfect time to create opportunities for older children to have extra responsibilities such as helping with shopping, cooking or preparing for visitors and celebrations. Involve children in decisions and give them responsibilities to carry these out. For example they may be entrusted to decide what to eat for dinner and have a role in preparation.
•Manage technology: Too much screen time undermines recharging or health promotion that should come with a break. Limit children’s screen time to 90 minutes in the morning, and then have a different plan for the day. It’s worth noting that the police often report an increase in cyber-bulling during school holidays, so start a conversation about this and be aware of your children’s on-line activities.
•Pre-empt issues: If children are worried about returning to school and a new class, discuss their concerns and devise an action plan. Do some orientation activities, visit the school grounds, or look up some information online together.
•Recognise concerning behaviour: Holidays are a good time to tune into a child’s emotions, pay attention to unusual behaviour, and try to open up communication. If you notice your child or young person appears to be more irritable, angry, stressed or worried than usual, is withdrawing from you and others, develops unusual sleeping habits, or expresses a lot of negative thoughts, it may be time to get the appropriate support to encourage healthy coping strategies.
