Mr Matthew Hawkins AP Identity

On Tuesday of this week at a special assembly, Mr Chris Smith, National Director of Identity for Edmund Rice Education Aus-tralia, presented Dr Carroll with the College’s official accredita-tion certificate as an authentic Catholic School in the Edmund Rice Tradition. It was an assembly at which the identity of our College was highlighted and celebrated. As I listened to the stories of the students who spoke about each of the EREA Charter touchstones of Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community, Liberating Education and Justice & Solidari-ty, I noticed that each spoke of experiences he had encoun-tered at St Patrick’s which helped develop his views, values and attitude. In more than one instance, a student spoke of an experience which shifted his perspective in some way – wheth-er an immersion experience, a relationship with a teacher, or participating in Fr Liam’s annual sacramental program. I have often spoken at College events, and indeed written in this very publication, about the importance of people having experiences which shift our perspectives – this is a healthy and necessary part of our existence in the fortunate lives we lead. On the holidays just passed, I had numerous perspective-shifting experiences. My daughter Rosie, again whom I have mentioned numerous times in The Calling, had an operation to repair two holes in her heart in the first week of the holidays. Rosie is now four months old, so as you can imagine, sending her off into an operating theatre for something as serious as open heart sur-gery was a challenging event for my wife and I. We had feel-ings of helplessness and concern for her safety, even though we had the utmost confidence in the amazing medical profes-sionals looking after her. It is amazing though how a situation like this absolutely crystalizes what is important in one’s life. It helps give a perspective on the importance of family, friends and the supportive relationships they embody. If a place was ever designed to help shift one’s perspective, a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is it. Surrounded by cou-rageous, resilient kids and tired but relentlessly supportive and compassionate families, let alone the amazingly talented and dedicated nurses, the scene is challenging to watch at times, but incredibly inspiring. I spoke to numerous parents in my week of long days in the Mater Hospital PICU ward, and each conversation left me in awe of people’s ability to be thankful for any small blessing. This helped me through what was a relatively stressful time for my family. When Rosie had a collapsed lung during her recovery, a parent whose four week old son was born with only half a heart assured me Rosie would be fine – he’d seen this happen before. It’s difficult to dwell on your own concerns when you have that conversa-tion. While my own worries didn’t completely vanish, I was able to see them with new eyes, through a different lens, with a new perspective.

For me, as I reflected on Tuesday’s assembly, this is what a true Gospel Spirituality provides, a way of seeing the world and people within it. As I look at Rosie each day, I remember the power of being a part of an inclusive and welcoming Catholic community.

A Prayer for Perspective Creative God, may your Spirit be at work in my life so that I may transform into something positive whatever negative experiences I will face in life. If I have been let down or treated unfairly, lead me to be concerned about fairness and justice to others. If I have been misunderstood, inspire me to listen to others and show genuine interest. If I have been left out of things, remind me to welcome and include others. If I have felt that I have experienced little support, show me how best to encourage others.

Amen

Mr David Gardiner College Dean

Welcome back to Term 4. A special welcome to Nicholas Catling who joins us this term in Year 6 and David Stokes who returns to St Patrick’s in Year 11. September/October is a great time to have a break and hopefully everyone is ready to put in a maximum effort to finish the year extreme-ly well. One major culminating event for our year is the Celebration of Excellence Evening on Friday 2 November. All families are invited to this special occasion. A large number of awards are presented on this evening. We currently have special trophies for most of our awards presented to the top student of every Year 12 subject. These are very special awards and much sought after by the Senior students. But a number are lacking a perpetual trophy. If you would like to sponsor (individually or a com-pany) perpetual trophies for Year 12 Biology, Drama, Legal Studies, Marine Studies, Mathematics B, Religion & Ethics and Study of Religion, please contact Mrs Robyn Donaldson. on 3631 9039 or email [email protected] Last term a committee was formed to review the Sport Program at St Patrick’s. The following areas were identified as crucial to addressing and progressing the sporting pro-grams at St Patrick’s

1. To develop a clear outline of the philosophy of sport as a co-curricular program at St Patrick’s in line with the holistic education of the young men at the College. 2. Review current programs and structures to see

improvement.

3. To improve the participation levels of all sporting programs. 4. To investigate how high performance and high participation models can coexist. 5. To develop the high performance of individuals and teams across the sporting program.

6. To align all sporting components/processes across the College. 7. To action plan/implement the above initiatives. 8. To investigate the implications of changes to the AIC/ CIC sporting program.

To gather information about the current and potential future aspects of SPC sport a survey was sent to a number of parents. I would like to thank the 343 parents who assisted our research by completing the survey. Some key findings from the parent body were:- 49% of our students play sport for SPC and a club 8.5% do not play sport (half of these due to not inter-

ested) 4.7% only play for a club Parents see the top 5 benefits of their son playing

sport at SPC as:- Being part of a team 90.6% School spirit 87.7% Having fun 85.4% Fitness/Health 84.4% Developing sportsmanship 80.8%

Reasons for parents not supporting their son partici-

pating in sport at SPC included the quality of the SPC program and transport issues.

85% of parents surveyed indicated they are involved in some form in the College’s sporting program.

60% of parents surveyed stay for the whole of ‘game day’.

229 parents added invaluable comments which will also provide affirmation and future areas of develop-ment for our sporting program.

One clear aspect is the extremely strong support parents provide our sporting program at St Patrick’s.. I will continue to update you with progress from the committee.

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

Students are now moving into the final phase of assessment for 2012. Students should factor in intensive revision between now and the end of the year. A focused and concerted period of intensive revision is critical to complement the daily home-work routine and continuous processes that should occur throughout the term. What is Intensive Revision? Intensive revision involves students sitting for periods of time from 20-60 minutes and focusing on reviewing the material they have studied throughout the term. This will involve re-working questions from the terms work, using text exercises, chapter reviews or other revision worksheets from the term, or accessing web based resources such as Mathsonline. It is also important that students methodically check the unit overview and/or term planner to guide their time spent revising so that they are covering all concepts before the exam. This type of revision should occur regularly from now up until the exam date. Class teachers will guide your son throughout this process. If your son is unsure of where to start, please ensure they seek assistance from the teacher. Effective preparation is a critical factor in ensuring the effort and application put in by our stud-dents results in a performance in which they can be satisfied. If you would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher or myself.

I had the opportunity to speak to year 12 students on Tuesday afternoon. The theme of the talk was “finishing well”. It is es-sential that our Year 12s, in particular, maintain a strong academic focus right through to the end of the year. Could I ask that all parents and Year 12s make time to look at both the assessment planner and exam timetable which have been published online. I spoke in particular to the Year 12s on the importance of honoring exam commitments. I especially indicated that we are unable to reschedule exams in such events as students booking a driving test or other personal matters on the day of a final exam . Our attention needs to be directed towards fin-ishing with the strongest results possible. Welcome back to all. It’s a busy tem , but one which moves surprisingly quick.

Ms Helen Dacy Resource Centre

The library webpage has been getting good reviews for its resources pages. This term we have put up pages for World War 1, Shogunate Japan, and Ancient Rome among others, so if your son is studying these topics in his classes this term, you will be able to find lots of tips to help him complete his assignments on these pages. If you want to find the libguides, just Google “St Patricks College Shorncliffe libguides”. Study group has resumed on Monday and Thursday alt-hough Tuesday afternoon is also becoming a popular time for boys to study in the library after school. Lunchtimes are also busy with boys doing group work or just chilling out with a good book. We are building up our section of non-fiction good reads and autobiographies to complement our fiction areas. Our lunchtime chess activities have been extended to the garden area outside. Boys enjoy playing with the giant chess set.

Mr Steve Copping Coffey House Dean

With the conclusion of their schooling journey fast approaching, it would be appropriate for the Coffey Seniors of 2012 to reflect upon the experiences that we have gained throughout our time at St Pats. We wish to share these reflections with those who have gone before us, and sympathy for those who are yet to travel the path. With the prospects of University, TAFE and apprenticeships in the near future, many of the seniors show ex-citement for the times ahead of us in our lives after graduation. However, many of the memories and reflections that we will draw upon throughout our time beyond St Pats will be greatly cherished as many were formed with the young men of Coffey House by our sides. During our journey, many of us tended to look upon our schooling lives as containing multiple hardships and disadvantages. However, looking back now, we notice the incredible opportunities that have been presented to us throughout our journey, and how they have prepared us exceptionally well for our lives beyond graduation. Each Coffey House Senior from the class of 2012 has been invited to summarise their individual experiences through a few sentences: I have enjoyed everything about this place and all the memories with my mates. I love the people I’ve met. This school is like a second family. I have really enjoyed the past 8 years at St Patricks College and all of the things that it has offered me. I have had the best time and have made life-long friends. My journey at this school has been a wonderful experience with lots of memories and wonderful friends. My time at St Pats has been incredible, absolutely amazing. My time at St Pats has taught me how to better myself and enjoy what I am given in life. My time at St Pats has taught me that no matter what life throws your way, you can still choose to be happy. I have been given so many different opportunities during my time here, and I have tried my best to take each one as it came. I love this place like a second home. The past 6 years have made St Pats like a second home, with friends I’ll have forever. I love this school. To be honest, if I didn’t go to St Pats, I don’t think I would have been able to have the same experience from other schools. Meeting new mates and making friendships which would last a lifetime is the most memorable part of my time at St Pats. It is really a Band of Brothers. St Patrick’s has provided me with the best 5 years of my life, filled with pride, joy, happiness, laughter and endless memories. The above words from the Seniors clearly show what it means to them to be a Patty’s boy. St Pats will forever be a part of all our lives that will never be forgotten. The school has shaped our Senior class over the years to give us everything we need in order to tackle the looming prospect of the outside world, and to be successful. I would like to wish all Seniors of 2012 the best of luck in their future endeavours, and remember to always fight the good fight. Coffey House Leader Russell Brooks

OUTSTANDING ATHLETIC EFFORT On Wednesday 10 October St Patrick’s College entered a team in the Junior (U15) Division of the South Queensland Schools Knock-Out Championships in Track & Field at QSAC. There were over 60 schools competing overall with 21 schools competing in the Junior Division. With some great determination and desire to succeed St Patrick’s finished the Championships in second (2nd) place and securing the silver medal. Together with Ipswich Grammar School (1st place), this effort has qualified our team to now represent South Queensland at the National Schools Knock-Outs in Launceston, Tasmania in December. A truly great achievement for these young St Patrick’s College athletes!

Over the holiday period we witnessed many students staying involved in St Patrick’s College Sport with students regularly attending Gym sessions, Tennis Clinics, Volleyball Training, Basketball Training, Track and Field Training as well as over 40 athletes attending the annual Track and Field Camp on the Sunshine Coast. Overall, it was another successful and active holiday break for many of our students and staff.

We would like to truly thank all those (students and staff) who did give up some of their holiday time to ‘stay involved’ in our sporting program. We are sure that their commitment will result in many positive outcomes for both themselves and our sporting program.

Taking a break from training at the University of the Sunshine Coast Track, the St Patrick’s college athletes on the T&F Camp spent some time with duel Olympian and Pole Vault finalist, 2012 London Olympic Games, Alana Boyd.

Alana spoke to the boys about her London experience, her training, her event (Pole Vault) and what it takes to be success-ful in sport.

Congratulations Sean McArdle (Year 10) – selected into the Metropolitan North School Sport Under 14 Cricket Team to compete at the Queensland Championships on the Gold Coast in December. Marcus Ferguson (Year 9), Jack Kelly (Year 9) & Mana Cecil (Year 9) – selected into the BJRU Under 14 Brisbane

Rugby Union Team to compete against NSW Country in Lismore this weekend.

Jeremy Skelton (Year 11) – After a successful tournament over the holidays playing for Queensland White in the National Under 16 Rugby Union Championships Jeremy has been selected into the ARU Junior Gold Squad Program where he will train over the Summer under the guidance of the ARU and QRU.
