A summer of progress Hello and welcome to the third edition of the Community Trust’s quarterly newsletter! It’s a bit later than usual but it has been a very busy summer for the Community Trust. As you will know we ran the recent Summer Fayre, which we are delighted to say was a huge success. We have also been installing the new Sarah Ann Bar which will hopefully enhance your experience at our concerts and cinema screenings.
We are also delighted to have secured a huge coup with live relays of the National Theatre Live coming to Midsomer Norton – one of the things you can read all about in this newsletter.
An invitation to members It’s now over a year since we launched the Trust and as such we will be holding an open meeting at Midsomer Norton Town Hall on Wednesday 3rd September at 7pm. There will be nibbles and refreshments available so I do hope you will be able to join us to celebrate our achievements in our first year as well as to have your say on what you would like us to do going forward. The Latest Releases
Our Saturday Showcases bring you the latest releases throughout the year –
finding their home on the fourth Saturday of every month.
We have more blockbusters coming up throughout the autumn. On Saturday 27th
September at 7.30pm George Clooney and Matt Damon lead a star studded cast
in The Monuments Men. Based on a true story, an unlikely World War II platoon
is tasked to rescue art masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their
owners.
We also have some treats for the whole family with our Family Showcases which
continue in the 2.30pm slot. On Saturday 27th September we bring you the box-
office smash hit Rio 2 and on Saturday 25th October we bring you the latest
animated adventure from Dreamworks Mr. Peabody & Sherman.
More films are set to be announced in the coming weeks as we continue our
policy of bringing you the newest releases available. For the latest updates on
our ever expanding cinema programme phone 01761 419133 or head to

The Classic Showcase – First Birthday Special
Our Classic Showcase takes place on the second Friday of the month offering
the very rare opportunity to watch legendary films in HD on the big screen. On
Friday 12th September, 2pm we have a fitting film for the Classic Showcase’s
first birthday: 1957 British comedy The Smallest Show On Earth. In this
hilarious film, a young couple inherit a debt-ridden old movie theatre,
appropriately nicknamed “The Flea Pit,” and the three eccentric senior citizens
who work there. The film has an all-star British cast including Bill Travers, Virginia
McKenna, Peter Sellers and Margaret Rutherford.
We then have an early Halloween treat on Friday 10th October with Ealing
Studio’s Gothic delight Dead of Night (1945). Remember those attending the
Classic Showcase receive free tea and cake with their entry!
National Theatre Live in Midsomer Norton j
We are delighted to announce that from September residents of the Somer Valley will be able to watch live relays from
the National Theatre at Midsomer Norton Town Hall. By embracing the latest digital broadcast technology we are able to
offer local residents cutting edge drama on their doorsteps in the Assembly Room Theatre (ART). Tickets for our first
performances are on sale now. For more information head to www.midsomernortoncommunitytrust.co.uk or phone
Alex in the office on 01761 419133.
Medea – Thursday 4th September, 7pm
The first performance to be screened in the Assembly Room Theatre will be Euripides’ powerful tragedy Medea -
directed by Carrie Cracknell, in a new version by Ben Power, at Thursday 4th September at 7pm. This production sees
Helen McCrory return to the National to take the title role; the cast also includes Michaela Coel, Danny Sapani and Cath
Whitefield. The production has been designed by Tom Scutt, with lighting by Lucy Carter, choreography by Lucy Guerin
and sound design by Gregory Clarke.
Medea is a wife and a mother. For the sake of her husband, Jason, she has left her home and borne two sons in exile.
But when he abandons his family for a new life, Medea faces banishment and separation from her children. Cornered,
she begs for one day’s grace. It’s time enough. She exacts an appalling revenge and destroys everything she holds
dear.
A Streetcar Named Desire – Tuesday 16th September, 7pm
The following screening will be Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece A Streetcar Named Desire on Tuesday 16th
September at 7pm – the fastest-selling production in the Young Vic’s history.
As Blanche’s fragile world crumbles, she turns to her sister Stella for solace – but her downward spiral brings her face to
face with the brutal, unforgiving Stanley Kowalski. Visionary director Benedict Andrews returns to the Young Vic
following his Critics’ Circle Award-winning Three.
The plays will be beamed live from the National Theatre in London onto the massive cinema screen at the Town
Hall, with full digital projection and surround sound, comfortable cinema seats and the usual refreshments. All
that will be missing is the view of the London skyline out of the window.

Lifeline of Friendship The first Sunday tea offering a lifeline of friendship to lonely older people took place on Sunday 10th August in Midsomer Norton and was a great success.
Part of a national initiative led by Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, the new group will cover the whole Somer Valley and has a programme of monthly events in place for the next twelve months.
The charity, which aims to relieve the acute loneliness and isolation of people over the age of 75, organises monthly Sunday tea parties for small groups and volunteers within their local community throughout the country. Each older person is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home for the afternoon. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month. Acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship.
Anyone interested in volunteering for Contact the Elderly, or
people over the age of 75 who would like to consider joining
one of the charity’s local friendship groups, can contact Clare
on 0117 9395747 or email:
Till The Boys Come Home We are delighted to be offering the opportunity to see the big screen adaptation of No Thankful Village for the first time in 11 years. Three screenings of the recording from 2003 called Till The Boys Come Home are being shown at Midsomer Norton Town Hall on the following dates:
Friday 29th August, 7.30pm
Saturday 30th August, 7.30pm
Sunday 31st August, 5pm
Till the Boys Come Home records a remarkable venture – the people of Midsomer Norton and surrounding towns and villages re-enact the oral history of their ancestors during the First World War, in a community play. This Royal Television Society award-winning drama-documentary, featuring veteran Harry Patch, therefore follows their emotional journey from first rehearsal to first night.
Tickets are just £5 for adults, £3 for children and £12 for
a Family Ticket (2 adults, 2 children). Phone 01761
419133 or go to mnct.ticketsource.co.uk. A small
booking fee may apply.
