BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE PROGRAM From the beginning of 2015, we will be implementing a 1-1 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program with Year 5 students (currently in Year 4) and from 2016, all students in Years 5 & 6 will be involved in the program. The intent of the program is for as many students as possible at Year 5 to have access to their own personal iPad which will become an important and integral part of their learning program during their last two years of primary school. To find out about the BYOD program, why we are going down this track, how it will be implemented, the cost to parents etc., an invitation is extended to all parents/carers of current Year 4 students along with any other interested parents, to come along to the BYOD Information Evening at 7pm on September 8th. There is no doubting that the current generation of children are digital natives. Many of our Year 4 students already have their own devices at home including an iPad, iPhone or tablet etc. At the information session, we will provide an overview of the use of technology in schools and how we intend to use technology in a range of teaching and learning situations in Year 5. Our teaching and learning program will focus on how to use a BYOD for educational purposes. We will provide an overview of the types of Apps that can be used and how we would use them. Information will also be provided about iPad specifications, purchasing options, insurance, technical support, provision of Apps, safe storage of iPads at school etc. Please feel free to come along and learn about this exciting new initiative. TRIVIA NIGHT SUCCESS Over 120 people attended the school’s Trivia Night last Saturday night and what a great time everyone had. Over $6,000 was raised which is an amazing outcome. Whilst fundraising is important for any school, so too is the sense of community and participation which were clearly evident. Parents, friends, relatives and staff all joined together, had a heap of fun and at the same time, raised valuable funds for the school. A big thank you to Bridget Ramaekers for doing a sterling job in coordinating this event. Our appreciation and thanks also to Clint Ramaekers, Carol Kovacic, Frank Minnelli and Leanne Tingwell for the terrific job they also did in helping to make the event fun and successful. SPORTING TRIUMPHS Congratulations and well done to the boys in the Dark’s Footy team along with their coach David Blackburn, for making it to the last four teams in the State Primary Schools’ Competition. Equal third at state level is a great achievement. Well done! Congratulations also and welcome back to Courtney Willemse who recently represented Victoria in a National Basketball Competition in Queensland. If wishing to place an order, please complete the order form and enclose with payment in an envelope which is clearly la-

Behind the scenes for many months, a joint St Helena SC

and Glen Katherine PS Sports Precinct Development team

has been working on a plan to improve the schools’ sporting

facilities and to make them available for the community af-

ter school hours including weekends. GK and School Council

has been represented on this project team by a parent

School Council member Brett Anquetil and the Principal,

Jill Ramsay. Today, Daniel Andrews MP met with members

of the project team and key stakeholders and announced

$2.5m funding for the joint schools’ sports precinct project,

depending on the outcome of the state election of course.

Great news nonetheless in knowing that the project is recog-

nised as being worthy of government funds.

STATE SEMI FINAL FOOTBALL

GK went down to St Marys Maroopna from Shepparton region in the State Primary Schools Semi Final

held at Ford Park last Wednesday 21st August.

St Marys went onto win the State GF.

The boys gave it their best shot but were well beaten by a very even and well coached team. Once again

their sportsmanship and effort was exemplary, which is always a great way to judge character when

things aren’t going as well as expected.

As coach I am very proud of their efforts and the way they have represented GK not only in the State

Semi Final but throughout the whole season.

To finish as the equal 3rd best Primary school team in the State is an amazing achievement.

A big thank you to all of the parents who have supported the team throughout the whole season, wheth-

er it be driving to all of the various destinations, scoring, goal um-

piring, time keeping, keeping stats, providing lollies and fruit or

just cheering the team on.

FOOTY DAY 2014

Our annual Footy Day will be held on Friday 19th September (the last day of Term3).

We are wondering if any Glen Katherine parents have contact with any of the AFL clubs or stores which stock small

sporting items which could be donated for us to use as prizes on the day. Items such as drink bottles, rules, pens,

small balls, children’s magazines or books would be great.

Please contact the GK office if you are able to assist in any way

Thank you
