Land travel in Italy will be by charter coach and there will be a ferry journey between Sicily and Italy. Monte, one of southern Italy’s most talked-about landmarks and a UNESCO heritage site. Free afternoon in Bari. In the evening dine at Perbacco trattoria - a slow food restaurant.

Mon 3 October: Bari - Naples• Travel to Naples and in the afternoon take a guided

walking tour in the historical centre, including Basilica di Santa Chiara, Spaccanapoli and Via San Gregorio Armeno. Ride the funicular up to Vomero for a walking tour of the area and astonishing view of the city. This evening have an aperitivo with Neapolitan crime writer Massimo Siviero.

A Bloody Journey!Crime fiction and culture in southern Italy

About the TourBarbara Pezzotti will lead this tour that starts in Sicily and then visits some of the less well-travelled regions of southern Italy, including Calabria and Puglia, before ending in Naples.

The tour blends sites of cultural and historical interest with food and wine experiences, and explores the locations of famous crime novels and TV programmes. Along the way there will be opportunities to meet and talk to some well-known Italian authors of crime fiction.

Tour LeaderBarbara Pezzotti is a former journalist for the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 ore (the Italian equivalent of the Financial Times or Wall Street Journal) and in 2010 she received her PhD from the Italian programme

at Victoria University. She is author of the book The Importance of Place in Contemporary Italian Crime Fiction. A Bloody Journey (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2012). In May 2015, Barbara led the successful study tour Commemoration and Celebration: In the footsteps of World War II Kiwi soldiers in Italy for Victoria Continuing Education, which marked the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Sat 17 September: Palermo• Take a morning walking tour of Palermo city centre

including visit to Palazzo dei Normanni and its beautiful Cappella Palatina, and Palermo cathedral. In the afternoon visit to Monreale’s Duomo, a Norman cathedral decorated with world famous mosaics.

Sun 18 September: Palermo• Join the Palermo NoMafia walking tour in the morning,

which ends at Antica Focacceria San Francesco, one of the oldest eating houses in Palermo. In the early afternoon, visit of Palazzo Valguanera Gangi. The rest of the afternoon is free. In the evening have an aperitivo with crime fiction writer Santo Piazzese.

Mon 19 September: Palermo-Agrigento• Travel to Agrigento in the morning and visit the Valley

of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site of the ancient Greek city of Akragasn, and enjoy a picnic lunch on site. In the afternoon visit the Casa natale di Luigi Pirandello, the Sicilian Nobel laureate in Caos.

Tue 20 September: Agrigento• This morning visit Porto Empedocle, which features in

the Inspector Montalbano detective series and is the area where crime fiction writer Leonardo Sciascia was born. In the afternoon visit Parco letterario Leonardo Sciascia in Racalmuto.

Wed 21 September: Agrigento - Villa Armerina - Ragusa • Depart Agrigento and stop at Villa Armerina to visit

Villa Romana del Casale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the few remaining sites of Roman Sicily. Continue on to Ragusa and take a guided tour of Ragusa Ibla, the historical baroque-style town centre, where the Inspector Montalbano TV series was filmed. Have dinner at La Rusticana, a cheerful trattoria .

Thu 22 September: Ragusa - Modica - Notos - Ragusa• Take a day trip to Modica to visit its ancient medieval

buildings and taste the world famous Modica chocolate. Stop at the Sicily’s oldest chocolate factory Dolceria Bonajuto; and then on to Noto, a baroque town famous for its ice-cream shops. This is also where Nobel Laureate poet Salvatore Quasimodo lived and worked. There will be a stop at the famous Caffé Sicilia and Caffé Costanzo for gelato, before returning to Ragusa.

Fri 23 September: Ragusa - Siracusa• Travel to Siracusa and take a guided tour to the

baroque suburb of Ortygia and its Jewish ghetto. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Ortygia. In the afternoon visit Neapolis, Siracusa’s archaeological park and the Teatro Greco. This evening have dinner at Don Camillo, a Sicilian restaurant hosted in the 15th century vaults of a former convent.

Sun 25 September: Siracusa - Taormina• Depart Siracusa and visit the fishing villages of Aci

volcano Mt. Etna. Afterwards visit Benanti and Andrea Fraschetti, whose vineyards produce the international award winning Passopisciaro and enjoy a wine tasting with salami and cheese. Afternoon free.

Tues 27 September: Taormina - Reggio Calabria - Tropea• Depart Taormina and stop in Reggio Calabria to visit

the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia. Begin the afternoon by crossing the Parco nazionale dell’Aspromonte and then continuing on to Tropea. Remainder of the afternoon free.

Wed 28 September: Tropea - Matera• Depart Tropea and travel to Matera, one of the oldest

towns in the world. In the afternoon take a walking tour of the Sassi, a UNESCO World Heritage site of natural grottoes adapted for dwelling.

Thu 29 September: Matera - Locorotondo - Alberobello - Matera• A day trip that starts with a visit to Locorotondo,

rated as one of the most beautiful little towns in Italy, to sample local spumante at Cantina del Locorotondo. In the afternoon travel to Alberobello for a guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site containing over 1500 beehive-shaped houses.

Fri 30 September: Matera - Lecce• Depart Matera and travel to Lecce, a beautiful

baroque town with palaces and churches sculpted from the soft local sandstone. On arrival take a walking tour of the historic centre, including Basilica di Santa Croce and Duomo di Lecce. Afternoon free.
