Our lovely Year 10 Public Speaking team, Magnus Funder Nissen (Chair), Lily Buttery (Speaker) and Emily Hollands (Questioner) had a wonderful day at Churchill College, Cambridge on 21st April, competing in the National Final of The English Speaking Union’s Churchill Competition. Eight teams from all corners of the British Isles took part in charming the audience. It was great to hear such a diverse range of topics discussed in such a broad range of beautiful accents. Louis Preston in Y12 was also in attendance; as an alumnus of the competition – last year he won prizes for Best Speaker and Outstanding Personality in the London Final -- he was asked this year to train as a judge and also to take part on Saturday as a Regional Representative, taking care of a team (in a good way) and speaking on the stage to introduce them. He did a splendid job.

This was the second year run-ning Farringtons has had a team through to this level in this competition but it doesn’t get any easier. In preparation, the team had spent an age pouring

over all things relating to electoral reform, which was Lily’s topic, and Emily as Questioner had to be ready to discuss anything: she has become our resident expert on current affairs! The whole team performed brilliantly. Well done to all!

On Wednesday 18th April 2018, I was lucky enough to interview Lizzy Yarnold about what it feels like to be the most successful British Winter Olympian ever.

It was fantastic to talk to Lizzy about retaining her Winter Olympic Skele-ton title in PyeongChang recently.

Farringtons in the Community Year 4 Trip to BFI Spanish

Film Festival

On Tuesday 27th February, Year 4

went on a school trip to The British

Film Institute at South Bank, London.

First of all we completed various

activities such as Spanish word puzzles

and then we practised a role play

about hosting a birthday party. David,

Max and myself got the chance to go

up on stage in front of a lot of children

and perform our work. After a

delicious packed lunch we watched a

film called ‘Carlitos' in Spanish with

English subtitles. At the end of the day

when we came to get the coach home

the snow had started coming down,

we were all very excited. It was a fun

trip, thank you to Señora Bastos for

organising the trip.

Lilly Deller, Year 4

Year 5 Treasure Hunt Year 5 had an exciting afternoon taking part in the annual Treasure Hunt. In small teams , supervised by members of the

Sixth Form, they made their way around the Senior School solving clues and puzzles. All the teams then came together for some delicious refreshments before being awarded their prizes.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Easter Fun Run

Schools Day, Bromley Rotary Club.

Congratulations to Lily Baker who took part in Bromley Rotary

Club School’s Day in March. Lily spoke about her experiences

and aspirations and was a real credit to Farringtons School.

Mr Garwood and Holly accompanied Lily enjoying inspirational

speakers from other schools as well as a lovely lunch!

The Rotary Club also organise a very successful Youth Award

Scheme for Bromley secondary schools to identify and

acknowledge students who are contributing to the local

community, especially those who help on their own initiative

either as home carers for sick relatives or in old people's homes

or local youth clubs. This year, the third year of the Scheme,

certificates and gift vouchers were awarded by the Mayor of

Bromley to 24 students of all ages from eight Bromley

secondary schools in a prestigious ceremony in The Performimg

Arts Centre in Langley Park School for Boys.

Guess the number of Easter Eggs House Competition

Thank you to ALL those who took part. Over 122 guesses across both the Junior and Senior schools were made and a total of £107.35 was raised which will be divided equally between Cerebral Palsy Sport - a charity which helps people with Cerebral Palsy to reach their sporting potential through appropriate sport activities, and St. Paul's Church, Buildings Appeal.

Cake Sales

The children from 3W thought it would be a fantastic idea to get involved with the Junior School Council fundraising this term and host a cake sale. The JSC have been raising awareness of the Whitefoot and Downham Food Plus Project - a project which provides meals to those in need in the Downham area. We are happy to report we raised £347! Thank you to everyone who helped with this event. Special thanks to the children in 3W for all their hard work.

Countdown

Thanks to all involved in Countdown this week. The Fisher Team from Year 9 were the overall

winners, beating Fisher from Years7/8 and Wilson from Years 5/6.

Boulogne Trip

On the 10th of May, Year 8 and 9 French students were invited to go on a French trip to Boulogne in the North of France. We got to school at 6:30 am on a very rainy day and then set off on a two and a half hour journey to Boulogne, and after riding on the Eurotunnel, we arrived in the North of France. Firstly, we went to the Auchan Hypermar-ket. It was great fun to go around all the different types of shops and see what you could buy from food to clothes and more. Then shortly afterwards, we went to visit the old-town where we had an extra history lesson from Mr Jones about the origin of the town and we also went to look around and see some of the old sites like the famous walls that surrounded it and the town square. Finally, we travelled to the Aquarium Nausicaa. In this

All the boarders enjoyed being outside for a BBQ on Bank Holiday Monday

Aquarium there was a huge variety of reptiles and sea life to see and fun things to do. I liked looking at the sting ray as it looked very beautiful and it was unbelievably long. After all that sight-seeing, shopping and exploring, it was time to head back to school. This trip has been a very good opportunity to practise and develop our French skills and also learn something new about the culture of Boulogne. I managed to learn some more French as well like “de rien” meaning “you’re welcome”. I would like to say a big thank you to Ms Jackson for organising and running the whole trip. Also a big thank you to Mlle Mosqueron, Mr Jones, Mr Scowen and Mr Doherty for also helping out with the trip. Thank you to all the teach-ers, it was a very good trip!

Aladdin As a well done to all the students involved in the school play, ‘We Will Rock You’, we were invited by Ms Scott to watch Disney’s Aladdin in the West End. On Thursday 3rd May, we all met at Chislehurst Station after school. The train journey was a great laugh because most students were singing songs from the musical, which really got us all in the mood. Once in London, we walked to the theatre so that we did not miss the show as were so excited. Once we got there, we were guided to our seats, still full of anticipation. A man walked on to the stage claiming to be from Disney and asked the audience for help to make sound effects for a new movie. Once hearing this news, Gracie Egan was practically jumping out of her seat. Finding out that we will possibly be in a future Disney movie made every-one extremely excited. Once we had joined in with creating the sound effect, the lights went down and people started cheering; some louder than others. Louise Nhema was especially vocal about her enthusi-asm. Once the play started, the whole audience fell in love with the Genie character. Every single joke he told made everyone burst in to laughter. This was complemented by everyone being mesmerized by Princess Jasmine’s beauty. Every time a song played everyone sang along, especially keen at doing this was Amy Newing, who was sing-ing from her heart. At the end everyone was sad that it was over, especially Miss Murphy who seemed to really enjoy the show. While walking through London all I could hear were my classmates singing the songs all over again. As a whole, the trip was an amazing experience for the students and we hope we could do something similar again next year.

Year 5 trip to York

On 8th May we went to York on DJ coaches. When we got there we dropped our bags in the Safestay Hostel. Then we made our way to Jorvik Viking Centre where we saw Roman ruins. From there we moved onto the Dig to find some bones.

The next day we went to York Museum followed by a river cruise in a big boat. Then we went to the fudge kitchen and got samples to taste. After that we visited the chocolate factory and had some chocolate to eat. Next, we all went to The Shambles where there were places to shop. In the evening we all went on a Ghost Walk and then finally to sleep.

After breakfast we all went to York Minster and had a tour. Then we travelled to the beach and ate ice-cream. Later we played football. Then some of us went in the freezing cold sea. We all got back on the coach and back to the hostel. Some of us got changed because we were going tenpin bowling and before falling into bed.

On the last morning we all had to pack our things away and get on to the coach. On the way we stopped at the York Wildlife Park and saw the monkeys. They were very funny because they were fighting and doing back flips. Finally, we got back on the coach and after many hours we arrived back at school.

In conclusion, I think it the Year 5 trip to York was a good experience.

Kent Schools Ski Championship

Over the weekend of 5th and 6th May, Farringtons Ski Team attended the Kent Schools Ski Championship Competition at Chatham Ski Centre. It was a training session with coach-ing on Saturday 5th May, followed by the competition the following day.

Our team consisted of myself, Damir, Tagir and Lily, and the Ski Coach, Mrs Arnold!

We had time to practise on one of the hottest weekends of the year. There was a wonderful family atmosphere as parents and children from all over Kent came to attend this event. There were many volunteers in assisting the races and helping the teams.

We set out our pop up tent as a base and started to wax the skis and get kit sorted and on with the skiing.

There were races all day from 10am until 4.00pm and we were very successful as we won two Silver medals for the team. Damir and Spencer, won Silver medals in the team races and Lily won Gold in the individual race also winning a super cup! I narrowly missed a Gold medal in the individual competition because in my haste to finish quickly, I missed the final gate. I was very disappointed!

There were some skiers who could not attend this year, but we are hoping to get more students from Farringtons involved in this wonderful sport and hope to bring back more medals in 2019.

It was a super weekend, thank you to all the parents who supported this great event.

Salters Festival of Chemistry

On Thursday 17th May Farringtons School participated in the Salters Annual Festival of Chemistry at the London South Bank University. Our school team consisted of myself and Isabella from Year 8 and Reuben and Harvey from Year 7. The first challenge given to us was the Salters Challenge in which we had to carry out experiments to solve a crime. With lots of dedication and excitement we all somehow managed to find a prime suspect.

After lunch we took part in the University Challenge to try and make a two-minute clock. We put our laboratory coats, goggles and gloves on and started trying out different combinations of solution and water. We had a blast!

After a quick break we were lucky enough to be treated to an outstanding magic show. We were showed the art of science – experiments with only plastic and water. We learned that science is an art itself and should be used to help make the world a better place.

Then it was time for the Prizegiving Ceremony. There were fifteen schools and three prizes. After a day of hard work and commitment our team came third. We were amazed our work paid off and we left with a smile on our faces. The final farewell from the organiser was, “This morning I welcomed a group of people, but this afternoon I am saying goodbye to a group of chemists”.

Thank you to everyone in my team and to Mrs Garton. Maria Manta 8BS
