Dancing to her own tune
This summer Jacob Young will lead Bible studies, help with tent revivals and July day camps at Mission Arlington.

Summer! It’s the most awaited season of the year for students
everywhere, but what if you had to spend your summer away from your family and friends, with people you don’t know?
For Jacob Young, Longview freshman, it’s not a have-to, it’s a want-to. He has volunteered to spend his summer at Mission Arlington (Texas) doing what he feels God has led him to do.
Young started his walk with Christ at a youth camp in Fort Windermere after an intense and “life-changing” conversation with his youth pastor in July 2009.
He continues to grow in faith by getting more connected with his church and striving to help others in their walks for Christ by passing on his Bible
knowledge. His tasks while on the
trip will include leading Bible studies in people’s homes, helping with June tent revivals and July day camps, along with various others. He leaves May 17 and returns on Aug. 4.
“I was just feeling really called this year to go on a mission; opportunity knocked, so I answered the call,” Young said.
He had to raise $590 of the total $900 that it will take to go on the mission, which includes a place to stay.
“It’s going to be very challenging. I’m excited, but a little nervous too because I don’t know what to expect,” Young said.
Also, the Baptist Student Ministry raises money every year to help students who, like Young, participate in GoNowMissions.
“Like the garage sale we had last weekend and the art sale taking place in the library…Profits from snack sales in the BSM as well as
our Dr Pepper machine also go toward that goal,” said Shelly Webb, BSM director.
Along with the mission trip he is going on, Young leads a weekly accountability group at the BSM. He is also in the process of joining a group called the Gideons that hands out New Testament Bibles at various places,
“Personally, I’m very excited about Jacob’s willingness to give his summer to be a student missionary. Serving as a student missionary is a step of faith that is life-changing, taking a student away from what is familiar to be challenged and stretched to serve God in a different place and different way,” Webb said. “He is very dedicated. There are still a lot of unknowns about what the day-to-day ministry will look like at Mission Arlington, but Jacob trusts that the Lord is sending him there for a reason.”
“This isn’t going to sound very good,” Boaze said as she stood at the front of her seventh grade history class just seconds away from presenting her Civil War project. She took a deep breath and let out the soft lyrics of her Civil War song. She ended with a slight smile and her classmates let their jaws drop at the sound of her voice. Seconds later the group of seventh graders burst into a round of applause.
“Since I was a little girl I’ve always loved to sing,” Boaze said. “At all of our family events I would get up in front of everybody and start putting on a show by dancing and singing as loud as I could. Never once have I been frightened by the stage.”
Once you get past, 19 year-old, Kilgore freshman Boaze’s modelesque height and spunky short hair, you will find a passionate and determined young woman.
“I don’t think my voice was a hidden talent,” Boaze said. “I’ve always believed that I was meant to sing and that for some reason God chose me to be different.”
Boaze has written five songs and currently has three uncompleted.
“Travis Hull and Buddy St. Clair taught me the basics of how to play the guitar and then I have just been messing around with it myself,” Boaze said.
Boaze is now singing regularly at the Gladewater Opry House.
“I perform there because I love to sing. It’s an indescribable feeling to be able to move people, along with myself, through the lyrics of songs and to see people enjoying themselves through the music,” Boaze said. “It just comes natural to me to get up on a stage and sing my heart out.”
With her natural talent, one would think Boaze would have fallen in love with the art immediately. However, Boaze originally had her own interest.
“I’ve taken dance classes all my life,” Boaze said.
Boaze began dance classes at the age of 2. “My mom started me in dance classes at
‘Spotlight Studio’ in downtown Kilgore with jazz, tap and ballet until third grade,” Boaze said. “Then I switched to ‘All the Right Moves’ in Longview and took jazz, lyrical, hip-hop and gymnastics until the seventh grade.”
Boaze was a cheerleader in middle school and began dancing with Summer McBee and took gymnastics from Jason’s Gym.
“I actually wanted to be a cheerleader in high school because serving as one my eighth grade year was such a change from dancing and I thought that’s where I was supposed to be,” Boaze said. “Oddly, I didn’t make it and realized that God wanted me to continue to dance and be a part of the extraordinary organization, the Kilgore High School Hi-Steppers.”
Boaze continued taking dance from Tempe Kirby and attended numerous dance camps, clinics and took a summer ballet class from Longview Ballet Theatre director, Pat George Mitchell.
“The biggest lesson I learned from drill team is that everything happens for a reason,” Boaze said. “Being a Hi-Stepper taught me patience, persistence, discipline, poise and what the word “team” really means.”

The thought of becoming a dance teacher has always been on Boaze’s mind, but just recently she has thought of becoming a drill team director.
“Since I was a little girl, I’ve always been fascinated by drill team performances at the football games and pep rallies,” Boaze
said. “Because Mrs. Clower, our director, made drill team such a learning and loving experience, I thought of how awesome it would be to be like her one day and teach dance to a family-like team and impact young ladies, as she did me.”
Boaze is currently a member of Phi Theta
Kappa, Tri-C, KC Chorale and the Opry class, as well as Shelley Wayne’s jazz and tap technique class.
“When I perform, I let everything go and become one with the music,” Boaze said. “Singing and dancing is what I was born to do.”
