A 100 kWp Floating Solar PV plant, the largest of its kind in India as on date, indigenously developed as a part of 'Make in India' initiative, was inaugurated by Shri A.K. Jha, Director(Technical) in presence of Shri V.B. Fadnavis, RED (SR), Shri R.K. Srivastava, ED(NETRA), Shri Kunal Gupta, GM (Kayamkulam) at Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Plant, NTPC-Kayamkulam,

th Kerala on 10 March, 2017.Floating platform has been indigenously developed by NETRA (NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance), the R&D arm of NTPC Ltd, in collaboration with Central Institute of Plastic Engineering & Technology (CIPET), Chennai and patent has been applied. Such systems are emerging as an alternative to conventional ground mounted PV systems which are land intensive. It has various benefits like conserving water through reduction of evaporation, increased generation due to cooling effect on the panels, reduced installation time etc and could be installed on saline water environment.

“Taj Mahal Ka Tender”

th NTPC organized a drama "TAJ MAHAL KA TENDER" on 4 March, 2017 at PMI, NOIDA. The drama was

presented by the artists of prestigious National School of Drama. Taj Mahal Ka Tender was a comical satire that

depicted a situation wherein if Shahjahan would have tried to construct the Taj Mahal then what would have

happened. The red tapism, bureaucratic mechanism and all the other hurdles were shown in this sarcasm-filled

roller coaster theatrical ride.

The play was enjoyed by the audience who turned out in large numbers in the jam packed Sarswati Auditorium

of PMI.

Shri S.C. Pandey Director(Projects), Shri K.K. Sharma Director(Opns), Shri Saptarshi Roy Director(HR) and

Shri A.K. Gupta Director(Comml) along with NTPC family were present.

India has achieved a major milestone in solar power capacity addition crossing 10,000 MW.

"The pace of sector activity has picked up tremendously in the last two years because of strong government support and the increasing price competitiveness of solar power,” according to a report by Bridge to India, a global solar energy consulting firm.

India is expected to become the world’s third biggest solar market next year, after China and the US. An average annual capacity addition of 8-10 GW per annum is expected from next year.

Utility-scale solar accounts for more than 85 per cent of the total installed capacity. Rooftop solar, so far about 10 per cent of the sector, has also grown at a healthy CAGR of 98 per cent between 2011 and 2015 and is expected to play an increasingly important role in the sector.

Improving net metering implementation and subsidy disbursal are expected to lead to a significant demand boost for rooftop solar across consumer segments. There is also a strong impetus on increasing rooftop solar deployment in government-owned buildings. Around 1500 MW of potential rooftop solar capacity has been identified in central ministries and departments alone.

The report pointed out that the solar park scheme has also been instrumental in tackling the two major issues of land acquisition and power evacuation for project development.

The government originally envisaged developing 20,000 MW of solar park capacity by 2020, but the scheme has received an enthusiastic response from the private sector and the government is already planning to double this capacity to 40,000 MW. Further, eight green energy corridors are under construction, with financial assistance from German development bank KFW, to evacuate and integrate the growing share of renewable energy into the grid. The corridors will allow transmission of solar power from the solar rich states to other states.

Innovations in Power SectorInnovations in Power SectorInnovations in Power Sector

A team of scientists at the University of Cambridge has developed a way of using solar power to generate a fuel

that is both sustainable and relatively cheap to produce. It's using natural light to generate hydrogen from

biomass. Dr Moritz Kuehnel, from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge, joint lead

author on a new research paper published in Nature Energy, says: "Lignocellulose is nature's equivalent to

armoured concrete. It consists of strong, highly crystalline cellulose fibres, that are interwoven with lignin and

hemicellulose which act as a glue. This rigid structure has evolved to give plants and trees mechanical stability

and protect them from degradation, and makes chemical utilisation of lignocellulose so challenging."

The new technology relies on a simple photocatalytic conversion process. Catalytic nanoparticles are added

to alkaline water in which the biomass is suspended. This is then placed in front of a light in the lab which

mimics solar light. The solution is ideal for absorbing this light and converting the biomass into gaseous

hydrogen which can then be collected from the headspace. The hydrogen is free of fuel-cell inhibitors, such as

carbon monoxide, which allows it to be used for power.

The technology was developed in the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Sustainable SynGas Chemistry at the

University of Cambridge. The head of the laboratory, Dr. Erwin Reisner, adds: "Our sunlight-powered

technology is exciting as it enables the production of clean hydrogen from unprocessed biomass under

ambient conditions. We see it as a new and viable alternative to high temperature gasification and other

renewable means of hydrogen production.

Future development can be envisioned at any scale, from small scale devices for off-grid applications to

industrial-scale plants, and we are currently exploring a range of potential commercial options."http://www.alternative-energy-news.info

World’s Largest Serving of Pancakes

16 professional chefs gathered in a big tent outside a public art

gallery in Moscow for the mouth-watering attempt. The batter

was prepared the night before, but all the pancakes were

required to be cooked on-site and served fresh on the attempt

day. Guinness World Records adjudicators Lucia Sinigagliesi

and Glenn Pollard came along to count and verify the

enormous number of pancakes.

Kitchens across the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are set for the age-old tradition of thPancake Day held on 28 February every year.

The Christian holiday Shrove Tuesday marks the last day before Lent – a 40 day period of abstinence before

Easter. In times past this meant it was necessary to rid the cupboards of all sugar, fats and eggs to avoid waste

and temptation. Thus, Pancake Day was born.

Russia, however, has a whole Pancake Week – a religious and folk holiday called Maslenica that takes place

seven days before Lent. The festivities are a celebration of the upcoming end of winter.

Russian flour exporter JSC MAKFA honoured the occasion by

attempting the Guinness World Records title for Largest serving of

pancakes.
