WARREN CENTRAL SCHOOL RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS As you all are no doubt aware, Emily Glover in Year 11 participated in the Secretary for a Day program in Sydney. Each of the 20 students chosen from across the state were given the opportunity to see the issues and challenges that face senior managers on a daily basis. All reports back from Sydney are that Emily was a fantastic ambassador for her school and the community. She has represented all of us to the highest standard and she is to be commended for her efforts. There is a link on our webpage if you want to listen to Emily’s radio interview. Over 1100 people have looked at this story on our school facebook page so far. Last week was Education Week and the theme for this year was “Celebrating Local Heroes”. At our assembly we acknowledged war heroes and our local heroes who make a positive impact on our school and the community. Often overlooked are the important contributions made by parents in our canteen. I would like to thank Sarah Pratt, Michelle Rookledge, Jo Dixon, Stacey Russell, Frank Presnell, Kayla Simpson and Carolyn Monkley for all their efforts and the way they freely give of their time to help children at our school. I would also like to make a special thank you to Mrs Janice Oriel, who has been our canteen coordinator for over a decade. Her efforts are truly appreciated by the school staff and students. Last week I met with the Warren Rotarians where I was given the opportunity to speak about the school. I would like to thank John Bourke and all the Rotarians for their hospitality. It was an opportunity for me to showcase the good things we are doing at the school and the way in which we will be moving into our next stage of development. We finally got the Athletics carnival run and won. It has been an unusual occurrence this year to have so many cancellations due to the wet weather, but I am sure the farming community amongst us are not complaining about that. Hopefully a bit of a dry spell now and the old saying… ”September rain brings grain”. On Tuesday we had a Junior Rugby Development Day at the school. The kids had a wonderful time and were taught some new skills in the art of playing Rugby. A big thank you to Greg Whiteley and Ryan Williams and also to Bill Murray for organising the day for interested students at the school. Week 4 of school already! Time is flying by and the weather in the main has been cold. Please ensure your children are in the correct uniform and are warm. If not, please come to the school and order extra uniform items as needed. Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting parents that are enrolling their children in Kindergarten in 2016. It was both a professional and personal experience for me as my daughter Eleanor will be in Kindergarten next year. I would like to thank all the parents for coming along and seeing a small snapshot of the educational experiences and facilities we have on offer that will provide a quality education for their children everyday at Warren Central School. I would also like to thank Lynn Westgarth and her primary team for the organisation of this tour of our school. Mr Duncan Lovelock - Principal Issue 2, Term 3, 2015 JUMBUNNA

JUMBUNNA Since the introduction of the PBL band system, day one this term, we have seen an increase in positive behaviours displayed throughout our school by our students. The students are rewarded under the three PBL focus areas; Respectful, Responsible Learners by means of a teal band. Students acrew these bands for displaying positive behaviours during school. HOW DOES THE BAND SYSTEM WORK? When the students gain three teal bands they trade these for a pink band. The students then gain teal bands to continue trading up gain three pink bands. Once they have three pink bands the students trade up to Purple bands and receive a merit card for their continued efforts under the PBL structure. The students continue going through the teal and pink until they gain three purple bands. Then the three purple bands are traded for a yellow band which entitles the students to a yellow letter being sent home to parents and caregivers which acknowledges the students positive efforts and a morning tea with the deputy principal, this is happening in the last week of term. The final band to gain after three yellow bands is a rainbow which entitles the students to the end of term celebrations day activities which is organised and selected by the SRC.

Year 11 WCS students attend the 2015 University of Western Sydney Rural Indigenous

Student visit

For many students making the journey from school to university can seem like an enormous challenge, however a new initiative at the UWS has been developed to support Indigenous students through their decision to seek tertiary education. During Week 1 of this term, three students Paula Gordon, Paige and Olivia Shepherd (all from Year 11) and Aboriginal Studies teacher Gaye Rush, attended a variety of tertiary education workshops at the University of Western Sydney as part of the ‘UWS Rural Indigenous Student Visit 2015’. These workshops included: teaching, nursing, policing, robotics and engineering, forensic science, animal studies and environmental science fields. The first session on Robotics was quite daunting, but with much persistence the girls were delighted when they managed to get the data sequences correct that enabled the robot to move in specified patterns at their command. All workshops were ‘hands on’ and all 3 girls were excited to have a whole new outlook on their future prospects in life. The teaching workshop was especially of interest for Olivia; and Paige who had not considered university study after her HSC has realised there are many options open to her that she would like to pursue. Paula was still keen to still to study something in the Animal Sciences faculty after attending the workshops. It was a very busy week where the students attended 3 different UWS campuses; Hawkesbury (Richmond), Penrith and Campbelltown. The days were very long, packed with workshops and cultural activities organised each day (and into the nights). One of the highlights of the week was a formal dinner where 150 students participating in the program from Warren, Coonamble, Coonabarabran, Gilgandra, Gularganbone, Condobolin, Lightning Ridge, Brewarrina and Walgett enjoyed a delicious meal attended by many Faculty Heads and the University Chancellor. Part of the week’s activities included an introduction to the UWS Badanami Centre for Indigenous Education. At the Badanami Centre, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can look forward to learning in a friendly and supportive environment, which promotes independent thinking and provides a supportive and culturally appropriate learning environment that caters to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Throughout the week it became very clear that the UWS are committed to providing higher education pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students that contributes to the process of reconciliation. It is an education institution which shares with the Australian community, the cultures, languages, history and contemporary experiences of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Out of School Activities We are seeking parents/caregivers assistance with the return of permission notes. Every trip made by students out of school requires a signed permission note from the parent/caregiver. If possible we send these notes home with the student usually 2 weeks before the event. Each form has a return by date and states that “No late permission notes and money will be accepted after the due date”. From this term (Term 3) we will be upholding this rule. All permission notes MUST be returned by the due date otherwise the student will be removed from the team and if necessary the whole team will be removed if not enough notes are returned. We are having great difficulty organising days, teams and transport due to non-return of permission notes by the due date. Thank you for your assistance with this concern.

Exploring Early Childhood Class

Last week Grace Brennan and her baby Charlie made a visit to the Year 11 Exploring Early Childhood (EEC) class. Grace shared her experience as a mother of three young children and the challenges of being a parent in the 21st century. Grace spoke of her pregnancy and childbirth, of the milestones Charlie was demonstrating and answered lots of questions about feeding, sleeping and playing with her young children. A huge thank you is extended to Grace and Charlie for sharing their time and experiences with us! 7/8 English (1) have been looking at narratives on revenge and are now moving on to persuasive writing.

Congratulations Kayla! Kayla recently completed this

top as her practical task in Textiles.

9/10 Aboriginal Studies are studying a unit on the Stolen Generations. The most challenging part of this unit has been learning about the experiences of those taken from their families as babies/small children. Listening to the testimonies of those ‘stolen’ was emotionally draining for everyone in the class, but brought a greater understanding about the contemporary issues that stem from this period of our history.

9/10 Commerce are looking at methods of financing larger purchases as part of their ‘Towards Independence’ unit of work. 9/10 English (1) are studying Steinbeck’s powerful novel, ‘Of Mice and Men’ which is about migrant workers in the 1930’s in the USA.

9/10 English (2) are currently completing a poetry unit. They have revised poetic techniques and are learning how to analyse poems and write an extended analysis.

9 History are currently studying World War One and are about to start their assessment on weaponry used during the war.

10 Textiles – Kayla has recently completed a challenging top for her practical assessment in Semester One. This term she is examining different types of fabric decoration. She will be experimenting with techniques such as screen

printing, batik, tie dyeing, embroidery and applique.

10 Geography are looking at the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation.

10 History are studying Popular Culture (1945 – the present). In this Depth Study students look at not only the developments in popular culture in post war Australia, but their impacts.

11 Aboriginal Studies are busy comparing Aboriginal and Maori cultures.

Year 11 Standard English are just completing a close study of Australian poet John Foulcher’s poetry. They are working on their assessment task which is the creation of a website with an analysis on two of his poems. They are about to begin the play ‘A Property of the Clan’ by Nick Enright which is a challenging drama about the teenage issues of stereotyping and labelling.

11 English Studies are undertaking a topic called ‘English and the Rural Experience’ this term. They are required to create and respond to a variety of different texts before completing a photo essay on warren as their final assessment task in Week 7.

Year 11 Legal Studies are completing a case study on the Port Arthur massacre in the lead up to their essay assessment task.

Year 11 Business Studies are creating a hypothetical business plan, where they are applying the theory they have learnt during the year.

12 English Studies are starting a unit called ‘English in History’. They will be examining a variety of different texts such as war poetry, web sites and film.

12 Standard English – Justin and Isabella are currently completing their final module of the HSC course. They are studying the film ‘Billy Elliot’ and have been busy analysing key scenes as part of their preparation for their assessment task on Thursday. Their Trial HSC exams are in Week 6 and this is their final assessment task for English!

Year 12 Business Studies are preparing for an assessment task on Crumpler, a Melbourne based bag manufacturer before preparing for their trials in Week 6.

Year 12 Legal Studies are about to complete their final assessment task on consumer law before their trials in Week 6.

Year 12 Aboriginal Studies is a very rigorous academic subject that covers a broad range of topics. With the HSC Trials fast approach ing, students are revising their work and making notes for study. The two areas of study in the HSC are ‘Aboriginality and the Land’ and ‘Heritage and Identity’.

Our two elective topics are ‘Health’ and ‘Criminal Justice’. Our main focus has been on Trachoma, Otitis media and life expectancy; including the government initiatives that have been implemented. In Criminal Justice we have focused on the over-representation of Indigenous youth in the criminal justice system and the escalating suicide rates in young Aboriginal people.

Martin Conrad Takes Top Prize Martin’s effort and hours of drawing paid off with him receiving a cheque of $250 from Mr Tony McAlary at our Education Week assembly last Wednesday. Mr McAlary offered the students of Warren Central School a chance to win the $250 prize by entering a piece of artwork/mural design to be used at the proposed skate park in Warren. The position of the park is opposite Clarrie’s Service Station on the side of the Macquarie River. Ideas are still being sought for a design for the park that will blend with the surrounding environment. Our school is looking at offering Visual Design as an elective in Stages 5 and 6, where future students can be a part of the ongoing skate park art project.

Under 16s Netball knockout (Dubbo) - last week On the very chilly morning of the 27 July, 10 energetic young ladies from Years 7-12 played netball in Dubbo. The girls played four games against very strong competition and did themselves proud with their teamwork and positive attitudes. The multi-talented girls played a variety of positions over the four games. Unfortunately our team did not make it through to the finals this time, but everyone had a great day. Thank you to Jodie Marks (team strapper) and Wendy Robinson (sideline coach) for being a wonderful support to Ms Gaye Rush on the day and transporting the team to their venue in Dubbo – it could not have happened without you both.

Library News Book Week It is that time of the year when the Library becomes a hive of activity! Book Week is on next week (10-14 August) and we have many activities planned. The theme for this year is “Books Light Up Our World”. The Book Fair is on again and will be open all week between 8.45am and 3.15pm every day. We have hundreds of quality books for purchase. All children will be given the opportunity to visit the fair early in the week and will bring home a “wish list”. We hope as many people as possible will be able to support the fair as this support benefits the library as we are able to gain a percentage of the sales in books. We also would welcome any donations of books to the library. Remember Christmas is just around the corner! Books make great gifts! We will once again be having guest readers in the Library at lunchtime throughout the week. The Book Week assembly is on Thursday 13 at 1.30pm in the school hall, followed by afternoon tea in the Library. We welcome all members of the community to this exciting event. There will be several items of entertainment performed by the students as well as the parade and announcement of competition winners. We would encourage all children to dress up for Book Week as their favourite book character or something to do with the theme. If possible, it would be fantastic if all children could bring their book with them or see the library staff this week to borrow one or put it aside. Mrs Ridley has a limited supply of costumes available for hire for $1. Children will need to organise this with her by the end of this week as it is too busy during book week. We are also running a variety of competitions with some wonderful prizes on offer. These are not compulsory and are just for fun. Competitions entries must be at the library by Thursday 6th August for judging and cost 20 cents per entry. Winners will be announced at the assembly. Please contact us at the Library if you have any questions relating to Book Week. Premier’s Reading Challenge The challenge finishes at the end of August. To allow time for registration it is necessary for all reading logs to be in by the beginning of next week at the very latest. If your child has been reading at home and is almost finished please encourage them to finish it if possible. Certificates are generally received by early December. Activities

1. BOOK CHARACTER PARADE: K-6 children are asked to dress up as their

favourite book character and bring their book with them for the parade. Any

child whose costume is suitable may come to school dressed in character for

the day. Other children may get dressed during lunch time. The Book

Character Parade is NOT a competition and children are encouraged to make

their costumes from materials kept at home and with as little expense as

possible. Secondary students are also invited to participate and join in the

parade.

Everyone is invited to come and watch the parade, which will be held in the

School Hall on Thursday 13th August at 1.30pm.

Please join us for afternoon tea in the Library after the parade.

2. BOOK FAIR: We will be holding a Scholastic BOOK FAIR from Monday 10th

August to Friday 14th August between the hours of 8.30am and 3.15pm in the

School Library. During the BOOK FAIR your children can purchase quality-

reading material. We urge you to visit the BOOK FAIR. You’ll be sharing in

the magic of choosing new books and encouraging your children to read.

Our school will benefit from sales and obtain extra resources for your

children.

So join in the fun. Mark the dates on your calendar and help our school enjoy

this wonderful event.

Looking forward to seeing you during BOOK WEEK.
