FMF: FLEMINGTON MIDGET FOOTBALL - SINCE 1 967

Many of you may know that I lost my mother suddenly in March of this year. As difficult as it has beenfor me as an adult to deal with the loss of a parent, it cannot compare to the world-changing losses thatthree of our young athletes have endured in the past few months. From late October throughDecember, three of our young football players suddenly and unexpectedly lost a parent under variouscircumstances. Thankful ly, the FMF family has been there to support al l of us in our time of need, asking nothing in return.

When my family moved into the area seven years ago, my sons wanted to play football . Being new, Iasked around and quickly found out that in Flemington circa 2006 you were either a “Pioneer family” ora “Falcon family” and there was little room in-between. As I asked around and learned more, one wordcame up again and again. . . "Family". Everyone, and I mean everyone, who was involved with thePioneers (now FMF) spoke about how close and tight-knit the community of famil ies and volunteerswere. At the time, I didn’t understand exactly what that meant, but I was intrigued enough to become apart of it.

Fast forward 7 years, and I 'm grateful that I made the decision I did. I have been a part of many winsand losses through my years with FMF. I ’ve witnessed glorious championships and heartbreakingnear-misses. Indeed, this very issue of FMF Magazine has a feature story on our Extended CheerTeam’s attempt to capture another National Championship in Orlando last month. All of it has beenfun, but the most impressive thing I have witnessed were the instances when the FMF family mobil izedto come to the aid of its members. Whenever an FMF family was in need, whether it was a house fire,a natural disaster or the loss of a loved one, members of the FMF family routinely went above andbeyond to help their own. I f there is one thing I ’ve learned during my time here, it’s that “The FMFfamily” is not just a marketing pitch. . . not just a boast. I t is one of the founding principles on which theorganization operates, the lens through which organizational decisions are viewed. The FMF Family isabout much more than winning or losing football games and cheer competitions. I t’s about goodpeople providing the children of our community with a positive example of responsibi l ity and goodcitizenship. I t’s about working together to provide our athletes with the opportunity to grow and learnabout their sport and about themselves while connecting with others to forge memories and bonds offriendship that wil l last a l ifetime.

With the organization growing as fast as it has (the number of athletes participating in FMF has nearlydoubled since 201 0) there has been an inevitable decline in the tightness of the bonds between ourmember famil ies. Some of our new famil ies may not have yet personally experienced the feeling offamily and community across all teams that the “old-timers” remember fondly. Some have gone so faras to say that the FMF Family is a quaint bit of nostalgia that no longer exists. I am here to proclaim. . .loudly and without reservation. . . that the FMF family is not only al ive but thriving. I t may not be visibleduring our day-to-day operation, but when the chips are down and one of our people needs help, support, and encouragement, no other organization in the area wil l go as far, do as much, or be ashelpful as the people of FMF.

I am grateful for those conversations I had seven years ago and I am honored to count myself amongthe proud members of the FMF family. I hope I can give back to the FMF family half as much as it hasgiven me. My family and I look forward to enjoying many years with the friends, old and new, we havemade in our time with FMF and eagerly await the chance to see everyone around the practice andgame fields this autumn.

Sincerely,

Craig TorresVice President – FMFManaging Editor – FMF Magazine

March Madness GridironClinic a Huge Success

story and photos by Craig Torres

The evening was cold and dreary. Winterhad sti l l not given way to spring, but

thoughts of crisp autumn afternoons and FMFfootball fi l led the air in Flemington, NJ.Monday March 11 th marked the unofficialstart of the 201 3 football season as 80football players age 5 through 1 4 descendedon the Power Time Sports Arena for the 201 3FMF March Madness Football Cl inic. Open

t

o all athletes interested in footbal l , age 5through 1 4, the March Madness Clinic wasthe first of several free clinics to be offered byFMF throughout the Spring.

Coaches from each of the various FMFteams were on hand to both meet the playersand to help them dust off their footbal l ski l lsfor the upcoming season. The March clinichad a decidedly offensive feel to it ascoaches instructed players in thefundamentals of offensive football by position:blocking, throwing, catching and running. The session was capped off by severalgames of touch football , al lowing the kids toshow off their ski l ls.

“The clinic was a tremendous success.” saidDan Eggemann, Pioneer Varsity Head Coachand Director of Football Operations for FMF.“I am extremely excited for what the

upcoming season holds when I see 80players dedicated enough to attend a footballcl inic nearly 6 months before the official startof the season. The kids had fun learningfrom our certified coaches and I know thecoaches were thri l led to be back ‘on grass’again.”

The next free clinic and open house isscheduled for Monday Apri l 26th from 6pm to8pm at Jimmy Wilson Field (aka PioneerField) located behind the American Legionbuilding on Route 31 in Flemington.

“Our plan is to hold one clinic per month fromMarch through May. Each clinic wil l focus ona different aspect of footbal l , just l ike lastyear.” said Eggemann. “I ’m really lookingforward to seeing everyone again in Apri l . I t’sa great opportunity for the kids to play somefootball and for new famil ies considering FMFto get a feel for what we’re al l about. I inviteeveryone interested in footbal l to attend.Football is a great game and our coachesand volunteers try very hard to make theexperience awesome, not just for the players, but for the whole family. I t's what separatesus from other programs and has made us thepremier footbal l program in the centralHunterdon region since 1 967.” -CT

Move Over Mickey!Pioneers Take Over the House of Mouse

written by Craig Torresphotos by Heather Krause

The Flemington Pioneer Extended SeasonCompetitive Cheer Team had an extremely

successful 201 2-201 3 competition season.Winning their third consecutive UCA NortheastRegion Championship in January qualified themto travel to Disney and compete at the UCANational Cheerleading Championships inOrlando, Florida this February. At thecompetition, the team experienced a slow startin the prel iminary qualifying rounds and founditself in eighth place, barely qualifying for thefinals and facing an uphil l battle. The girlsregrouped and responded with the courage of achampion, putting on a nearly flawlessperformance in the final round which vaultedthem to a fourth place finish in the Senior RecDivision.

Upon their returnfrom the Land ofSunshine andMouse Ears, wecaught up withcheer momsSheila Beckman,Carmella Kinney, and Deb Gottl ieband asked them torecount for everyone all of the nerves, excitement and exhilaration of a trip toNationals.

FMFmag: First, thank you to all of you for takingthe time out to speak with me about your trip toOrlando. Can you tel l me a little about what ittook to make it to Nationals?

Carmella Kinney: The girls put a lot of time, energy and dedication each week in making

their routine the bestthat it could be. Theygo over and beyondwhat is required ofthem by taking extratumbling classes, going to open gym atShield's andpracticing at home bythemselves. They areso devoted that they have often given upsocial events to attend practice.

Sheila Beckman: They had three to fourpractices each week, starting intensely at theend of the regular footbal l season. Many didseparate private gymnastics classes to finetune their tumbling. They held fundraisers tohelp pay for their uniforms, trips, andexpenses. Collectively they hosted and ran acheer competition. Individual ly, they solicitedsponsorships for a T-shirt from friends, familyand businesses. They performed in ahandful of competitions, including Regionalswhere they not only secured their bid toNationals, but cl inched first place.

Deb Gottl ieb: Practice, practice, practice andmore practice! All of them take tumblingclasses when they are not practicing. Thismeans missing school events l ike dances, friends' birthday parties, even family events. These girls are1 00% dedicatedto their team.FMFmag: Whatwere the daysleading up to thetrip l ike? Waseveryone super-excited?

had extra practices and even got picked up fromschool one day at dismissal just to get to the facil ityearly so they can maximize their practice time. Theyspent the last weekendbefore leaving forOrlando with doublepractice sessions. They even had to bringin a team lunchbetween the sessionsso that they would notwaste valuable practicetime. The girls weretotal ly focused anddetermined to put forththeir best efforts, despite some of thembeing very sick withcolds and otherviruses. They dideverything they couldto make sure they werethere on time and ready to go!

Beckman: There was a slow growing feeling ofanticipation, excitement, and nervousness as soonas January arrived. I t was a hard winter season, many girls had to overcome colds, flus and il lnesseswhich inevitably travelledthrough the squad.

Gottl ieb: This year was a greatyear if you were a virus! Wehad so many girls sick orinjured that it was literal ly touchand go leading up to theFlorida trip. Nevertheless, thegirls stayed focused and didwhatever it took to make it toNationals and put on their bestroutine.

FMFmag: What was yourreaction when you first entered the arena?

Kinney: I cannot imagine what the girls were feeling, because I was so nervous and excited at the sametime. What a special moment that they wil l treasureall the days of their l ives! I t must be what the NFLplayers feel l ike when they come out into the domeon Super Bowl Sunday. You are scared, nervous

and happy all at the same time. The anticipation ofwhat is going to happen sends butterfl ies in yourstomach, al l that work and time and it is al l over in 3

minutes.

Beckman: There isloud music, largecrowds and lots ofactivity. You seecheerleading squadsof al l agesEVERYWHERE. I tdoes NOT calm yournerves but escalatesthem.

Gottl ieb: I always getbutterfl ies and asinking feeling when Iwalk into that arena. This year, that wasespecial ly true. The

level of competition thisyear was truly exceptional, but I knew that if the girlscould pul l off a clean routine, they could make it tothe final.

FMFmag: How would you describe the girls'performance at Nationals?

Kinney: The girls did anawesome job and I couldn'thave been happier for them. They were harder onthemselves then we couldever be. The competition thisyear was fierce and thoseteams were awesome. Therehave been many changes inthe world of competitivecheerleading and every yearthe teams get better andbetter. They come from all

over the United States and the talent is out of thisworld. I am so proud of our girls, to come in 4th outof the entire US is amazing, not to mention having toqualify before they even get to that point.

Beckman: The semi-final qual ifying round waschallenging. Their nerves struck hard when theyarrived that morning in the arena. I t was the first

Beckman: To the girls who went, I would l ike to saythat I am enormously proud of everything youaccomplished. In many ways, the cards werestacked against you; there were many new girls, and sometimes uneven competition to go upagainst but you all did a fantastic job. To the girlswho aspire to go back, you can never prepareenough. February may seem like months andmonths away, but you have to take every momentof practice seriously to be able to perform yourabsolute best. You could never ask for bettercoaches, they are talented, fair and they wil l pul l thebest from you by challenging you.

Gottl ieb: Congratulations to this year's team. Weare all extremely proud of you. Next year's girls, keep working hard, train year round, and get yourtumbling. Stay focused, stay strong and go getthose white satin jackets! !

Thanks again to Carmella, Sheila and Deb. Thoughwe couldn't al l attend the competition, you' did awonderful job sharing what it's l ike to compete withthe best in the nation. Once again, congratulationsto our Extended Season Team. You girls haveshown the dedication, drive and determination ofchampions and have made the entire FMF familyproud of your accomplishments. We wish you allgreat success as you move forward in whatever youchoose to do.

time on a Nationals stage for much of the squad. They performed well , but not flawlessly. They tookthe few hours between the semi-final round and thefinals to review and regroup and get their headsfocused. For the finals performance, they did afantastic job with only a few small j i tters. They wereup against some very challenging competition. They were satisfied with where they placed, butinstantly felt the need to get back there next yearand take gold. Nothing can compare and wordscan't accurately describe the camaraderie thatcomes with participating on this team, and it flows tothe famil ies. Lifetime bonds are formed betweenthe girls, the coaches, the parents and even thesibl ings who join them on the trip.

Gottl ieb: As it turned out, coming out of the prel im,they had the lowest score among the teams chosento compete in the final. They brought their bestperformance to the final and moved all the way upto fourth place. They ended up only 1 /2 point out ofThird and only five points from First. For many ofthe girls, it was their first trip to Nationals, this teamwas young. This was an exceptional result forthem!

FMFmag: What would you like to say to the girlswho competed this year. . . and to any girls whoaspire to go back to Disney next year?

Kinney: To the girls who went this year I sayBRAVO!! ! ! You were awesome! To the girls whowant to go back, keep working hard all year round.Tumble, tumble and tumble! ! Come back with thatdrive in you again and strive to be the best that youcan be.

The FMF program has grown tremendously inrecent years, nearly doubling in athlete

participation since 201 0. Throughout our growth,we have always worked hard to maintain our highstandards and core values. Creating anoutstanding football and cheer experience for bothour athletes and our famil ies is a priority at FMF, butwe understand that without vigi lance, rapid growthcan come with a diminished family experience.

Many new famil ies have joined FMF in the lastthree years on all teams, at al l levels. We thought itwould be a good idea for them to share theirfamily's FMF experience in their own words. Weinterviewed several famil ies who were new to FMFin 201 2 to get their perspective on the state of theprogram.

Name: The Ribaudo FamilyTeam: Jr Red DevilsSport: FootballLevel: JV

How did you first hear aboutFMF?My son played flag football for ayear when he was younger.we opted out for a few yearswhen it was time for pads. Wewere apprehensive and a bit over-protective due tohis small size and his asthma. Thomas has askedevery year to re-join Pioneers/Jr Red Devils andthis past season we final ly let him.

What made you choose FMF over otherorganizations in the area? Many of our friends were already part of the FMFfamily, and they were all having great experiences. Before we took the plunge, we asked about amil l ion questions to our friend Mike Kovi. He hadso many nice things to say about the organizationthat we went ahead and registered. A few of themany reasons we chose FMF were the coachingstaff and the playing time guidel ines. With anyother organization in the area, being a new playertypical ly means spending a lot of time on thesidel ine, with FMF, he played all of the time.

Did you enjoy your first season with FMF?

I t was the best decision that we could have madefor our son. He absolutely loved everything about it.He ended up playing on the JV Patriot team whichwas perfect for his size and abil ity. Every singlecoach was amazing and knew exactly whichpositions would be good for Tom and which wouldnot. They were all so kind to him, as a first yearplayer, we appreciated that greatly.

What would you say to someone considering joiningthe FMF family? We are already signed up for next season and wecannot wait! ! !

Name: The Portnoy FamilyTeam: PioneersSport: FootballLevel: PeeWee & JV

How did you first hearabout FMF?We first heard about FMFfrom several of our friendsand from several of ourboys' friends.

What made you chooseFMF over otherorganizations in the area?We choose FMF over other organizations in thearea because we heard so many positive thingsabout the organization that we really wanted ourboys to be a part of it. We were told that thecoaches were great, the famil ies were great and theoveral l organization was great. We were told thatour boys would learn a great deal about the sport offootbal l . I 'm happy to say that everything we weretold was 1 00% true!

Did you enjoy your first season with the FMF?We thoroughly enjoyed our first season with theFMF family and were very sad to see the seasonend. We are already looking forward to nextseason!

What would you say to someone considering joiningthe FMF family? We would tel l them what a great time we had. Wewould tel l them to run, not walk, and join right away.

How did you first hear about FMF?We had just moved to the area and I googled"cheerleading in Flemington".

What made you choose FMF over otherorganizations in the area? From reading your website, I was very impressedwith the organization and it seemed like it would bethe right fit for us.

Did you enjoy your first season with FMF?Yes we did, my daughter did especial ly. Her coacheswere wonderful and the sport was very organizedand well supported! I also volunteered my time doingthe photography for the team and I loved being partof that as well !

What would you say to someone considering joiningthe FMF family? We would tel l them to join in a heartbeat!

Name: The Enslin FamilyTeam: Jr Red DevilsSport: FootballLevel: Varsity

How did you first hear aboutFMF?Last Spring, my son's baseballcoach asked if he wasinterested in playing footballwith FMF. My son was very excited to join, as heloves football . We had just moved to Flemington andmy son had struggled to make friends and had self-esteem issues. Joining this team was the best thinghe could have done. Not only did he make somegood friends, but the he learned about himself. Hisself-esteem went up and we saw such a greatpositive difference in him. His coaches wereextremely dedicated and really taught the kids whatsportsmanship is about. I t wasn't just about footbal land winning - the lessons that these coaches taughtthe boys were valuable ones that they wil l carry withthem as they venture to high school and thencollege. I am very grateful for my son to have hadthis experience.

What made you choose FMF over otherorganizations in the area?I was very impressed with how professional theorganization was and how dedicated the coachesand other volunteers were.

Did you enjoy your first season with FMF?This past footbal l season was such a great year formy son and our family. I t was great to get togetherto watch the games on Saturday nights.

What would you say to someone considering joiningthe FMF family?I highly recommend the FMF program to anyonethat has a son interested in footbal l .

Name: The Murphy FamilyTeam: Jr. Red DevilsSport: FootballLevel: JV

How did you first hear about FMF?When my son wanted to join tackle football , I didn'treal ly know what or who to look for . I searchedonline and called around and eventual ly found outabout FMF.

What made you choose FMF over otherorganizations in the area?During my research, somebody told me about theother organization in town. I compared the feesinvolved and the volunteer hour requirements andto me it sounded like FMF was more reasonable.Hence, I decided to join FMF.

Did you enjoy your first season with FMF?Being a first timer, I had my frustrations. Isometimes felt l ike I didn't know who to talk to getinformation. I didn't know anything about footbal land it was hard to understand the different divisionsbut the coaches did a superb job with the players. The other players welcomed my son and hebecame good friends with them in a very short time.

The coaches focused on their players, win or lose, they were all there to support one another and justhave a good time playing the sport. My son learnedso much about footbal l , about protecting each other, about being a team, about respect and being agood sport. I didn't see anybody with an attitudeduring games or practices.

What would you say to someone considering joiningthe FMF family?I have already personally recruited twofamil ies/friends and their sons to join FMF this Fall . Itold them no worries, I can walk them thru it since Ialready (hopeful ly) know my way around.

Name: The Pelosi FamilyTeam: PioneersSport: FootballLevel: JV

How did you first hear about FMF?We received an email from our son's school whichl isted information about the FMF program. My sonalso had friends who were already in the program.

What made you choose FMF over otherorganizations in the area?My son chose FMF to be with friends already in theprogram. He went to cl inics held by otherorganizations, but was sold on FMF because of thefriend connection. I personally thought it wasconvenient that it's not a travel league due to a busywork schedule.

Did you enjoy your first season with FMF?We had a great time. We especial ly enjoyedmeeting the other famil ies and children in theprogram and the strong sense of community thatfi l led the air at practices and games.

What would you say to someone considering joiningthe FMF family?FMF is a solid, well-run organization ful l of greatkids, great famil ies and plenty of opportunity for kidsat al l levels of experience to get involved in teamsports. The coaches earned my respect with theirselfless commitment to the kids and I look forwardto the 201 3 season and many more.

Name: The Burke FamilyTeam: PioneersSport: FootballLevel: PeeWee

My son Logan played football for the first time lastyear on the Pioneer PeeWee team. To say that heenjoyed it is a ridiculous understatement. Logan isincredibly passionate & enthusiastic about footbal l---the kind of kid who eats, drinks, sleeps & plays thegame ALL YEAR ROUND---and because this washis first year playing, he was worried that hewouldn't get to play too much. Instead, his coachesrecognized his enthusiasm & drive, and put him towork in various positions, where he ended upplaying a majority of every game and learning theskil ls he needed to get better for the next one.Logan truly loved every game his team played,

because win or lose, the coaches never let themfeel bad about it & never fai led to inspire them forthe next game to come. I was always impressedthat Logan almost never cared about the final score. The fun was in playing. . . . . . the. . . . . . .game. I 'l l alwaysbe grateful that Logan was lucky enough to bematched with coaches who obviously just "love thegame" every bit as much as he does & who madesure that playing well came before winning everytime.

We heard about the organization about 4 yearsago, when my daughters were interested incheerleading. We heard from friends that theprogram was well-run, family-friendly & most-importantly, NOT overly-competitive. Often, toomuch emphasis is put on winning, championshipsand awards, & our kids can be afraid to learnsomething that they're interested in, for fear of notbeing "good enough" right away. We wereconfident that the organization was welcoming, fair& accepting of al l ski l l levels, and this turned out tobe very true for my cheerleaders. . . . .and for myfootball player as well .

Logan spends every bit of his lunchtime recessplaying football with his friends, and tel ls me he'sconstantly trying to recruit them to come playfootball with him. A few of them seem genuinelyinterested, though their parents are hesitantbecause they are small , perhaps skinny boys, andno parent wants their son getting beaten-up on thefield every weekend. We try to assure them withLogan as the example: Skinny, inexperiencedfootball fanatic + coaches who value safety &sportsmanship above winning + organization thatmakes football a family event = an excellent footbal lexperience for our kids.

Logan already can't wait for the season to start.Seriously. NOT kidding.

A huge Thank You to al l of the famil ies whoparticipated in this article. We're glad you had apositive first experience with FMF. While it is goodto know that the state of our program is strong, it isour goal to provide our children and our famil ieswith an even better experience in the upcomingyear. We are continual ly working to improve everyaspect of the program in order to maintain ourstatus as the premier footbal l and cheer program inthe central Hunterdon region. -CT

JAMES L. "JIMMY" WILSONOur Number One Fan

Jimmy Wilson left a lasting memory with everyone who visited Pioneer Field throughout the 1 980's and early1 990's. While his wheelchair kept him from taking part on the field, it couldn't keep him from being part of theteam. At the end of every summer, l ike the changing of the seasons, Jimmy was there to usher in footbal l

season. He was as much a part of the Pioneer family as the crack of pads echoing through the crisp autumn airand the roar of the crowd on game day. For close to a decade, Jimmy never missed a game, indeed, he nevermissed a practice in al l of his time with us. His love for the game and for the team was infectious and wil l beforever remembered. In 1 994, after his passing, the organization recognized Jimmy's contribution to our family

by naming the playing field after him and retiring the number one jersey, in memory of their #1 fan.

JOSEPH YASHKAS6/4/85 - 4/29/00 : Forever a Pioneer

Joey Yashkas was a Pioneer through and through. He played football for the program and was a greatteammate. Joey was a key member of the team from his peewee days through his eigth grade season. As

much as he loved football and his teammates, Joey also loved racing motorcycles. I t was this love that took himfrom us far too soon. After the tragic motorcycle accident that took his l ife in 2000, the organization retired hisnumber 55 and decreed that in remembrance of Joey and Jimmy, their numbers 1 and 55 be painted in the

corner of the endzone for every home game so that they wil l always be part of our family.
