I’m at the head of a traditional family: 1husband, 1 wife, and 5 children. Oftentimes

my children are informed “Don’t arguewith me! There’s no debate! I didn’t askfor a vote—what do you think this is, a

democracy? What I say goes, and that’sit/that’s all. Go bicker amongst yourselves!”I’m the head, but together my wife and I

decide the direction our family takes.

Our children range from ages 17, 10, 7,3, to our youngest (Ezekiel), 19 months.

They’re all good kids. However, if our family was run like ademocracy, their votes would lead our family straight to hell. And I, taking full responsibility, would be to blame for it. But,because I take responsibility and because I’m not stupidenough to not realize the implications of making wrongdecisions, that’s not going to happen. My children areimpressionable and unwise to the ways of the world, andeverything influences them, and ultimately would influencetheir vote. If I ran my family like a democracy, we’d beconfused, divided, and damned. Yes, we’d be hell bound.

Fortunately, my wife’s sole purpose in life is, like mine, for thehealth & welfare, and ultimately for the betterment of ourchildren. It’s our love, loyalty, and dedication to family thatdetermines our decisions and defines who and what we are,not dogma, and especially not any self-serving interest. UnlikeRepublicans & Democrats in Washington DC, my wife & I areone team; we’re neither divided nor mutually exclusive. We’re1 team comprised of 2 distinct individual leaderships, each withour own opinions, visions, and way of thinking. Like any twopeople, we often disagree. But we manage to work out ourdifferences—because it’s not about winning arguments, butabout the betterment of the family—the team! My wife, Julia, once said to me "Just because I can’t visualize your idea doesn’tmean it's not a good one", and it has always been in that respectand awareness that we treat one another when we disagree. Itis amazing what an effect a little respect can have upon a team.Respect, notwithstanding, imagine what my family would looklike if the wife and I were intent on division perpetuated bydogma, and our family was run like a democracy...

Well, if I could convince 2 kids to vote with me, my wife and theother 3 kids would out vote me. My wife would jump into bedwith everyone from whom she could profit, then come to thetable the next morning solely to complain about anything andeverything I say. She’d continually express disdain. Notsurprisingly, a slew of her girlfriends and boyfriends would beappealing to our children like a 3 ring circus with side showsand distractions, trying to get me to pander to ridiculousassertions that I’m not qualified to be the head of this family.Without overtly mentioning that my skin is darker thaneveryone else in the family, some would question mylegitimacy. My children, with their low attention spans, wouldn’tbe able to focus on the real issues, nor would they make theeffort to pursue any facts for themselves. I would continually tryto appeal to them through wisdom and intelligence in agenuine effort to convey my love and loyalty to our family, andexplain why tough choices must be made. Then my wife andher 3 ring circus would spin everything I said. Big problem.

That’s what’s wrong in our nation. The Democrat and theRepublican are more like mortal enemies bent on destroyingone another at any cost than a husband & wife in love with theirfamily willing to make necessary sacrifices.

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.Don't be trapped by dogma--which is living with the results ofother people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinionsdrown out your own inner voice. And most important, have thecourage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehowalready know what you truly want to become. Everything elseis secondary.”—Steve Jobs.

What can YOU do to help our nation? Remember always thatwe are all one team—The American People!—and don’t gettrapped by dogma. That’s today’s news inThe Massena News!

being—anywhere andeverywhere encountered, without expectation ofrecognition. Far too many peopleare paralyzed by fear, by worry, and by grief in our politicallypolarized nation. That’s whereyour help is urgently needed.Your happiness (towardsencountering others) passesfrom you onto them to helpcombat that which is ailingthem—like an antibioticcombating a bacterial infection. This is how you can help raise anentire community. All you needto do is smile and be friendlytowards every individual youencounter. Do not, however, dothis only for those in your socialcircle, as it would serve solely togive testimony that our nation isdivided, thus exacerbate theproblem. Pandering to one’sclique while dismissing othersserves only to announce a wall ofaggression and expressescowardliness; thus, actually, welcoming aggression. So,please, do not hesitate to befriendly to those outside of yourclique.

There are good people here inMassena. Repeat: GOOD people.Prisons, however, are filled withtoo many good people who havedone stupid, bad things, and whohave eventually become badpeople. You can save many liveswith minimal effort—which iswhy the Massena Newschallenges you to save a life, and, ultimately, to save a community.Anyone can look the other way, anyone can throw their life away, and anyone can certainly takeanother’s life easily. There are somany things that anyone can do.But only a strong, selflessindividual can save a life. You arenot just anyone. You can helpchange an entire community. So,smile and say a kind word.

(%'")!-2&%)!1*,!My son, Mateo, rambling onabout his fondexperiences thissummer, andme halflistening to himwhile halflistening to anews channel,

culminated intohim saying “Time is a gift fromGod, Dad. But it’s a gift we haveto use, and when we have thattime, we have to do really goodwith it, because once it’s gone,it can never come back. It’sgone forever, Dad” heconcluded, in a very heartfeltmanner for a 7 year old. I turnedoff the television to activelyengage with him. It was toolate. He had already shared withme what he wanted to; and Ihad been only half there. Thetime had come and gone.

It obviously doesn’t take arocket scientist to realize whatMateo realized about time. No.All it takes is basic humancompassion. Incidentally, that’salways a hot topic in theMassena News: Basic HumanCompassion. Why?—becausethat’s where we as a civilizationneed improvement most, in thespirit of the people, in the spiritof Massena.

There are organizations here intown comprised of individualsexercising human compassionto help the sick, the poor, andthe weak, which is awesomeand speaks volumes about ourcommunity. Those self-

sacrificing individuals give much ofthemselves without any desire forrecognition or public reward. The rewardthey get is received in their heart andbecomes a part of their very soul, strengthening their spirit in ways we are allunable to comprehend. Like going to thegym, one doesn’t have to be a doctor toknow how one’s body can achieve positiveresults. One doesn’t need to know how itworks. One simply needs to know whatone should do to achieve results. Indeed, everyone knows how to get physicallystronger; but not everyone knows aboutstrengthening the spirit—and, ultimately, the morale. Hence, the reference made, herein, to those selfless individuals and totheir example that we should all heed.

The effect of their reach, however, extendsonly so far. That’s where you come in. Youare mentally, morally, and spirituallystrong. Hence, the Massena Newschallenges you, its readers, to exhibitgenuine friendliness towards every human

SEEKING THE ARTS . SE

Talent Verses AbilityIn the world there seems to be a magic dividing linebetween the Artist and the average person. Theaverage person believes that talent is a thing that youare born with and you either have it or you don’t.

The problem with Talent is this; it is one part ability, one part practice and two parts focused drive. Theaverage person on the street may not understand

this process and often put the Artist on a pedestalbecause of what is perceived as “God Given” talent. It has been myexperience however that most humans have some measure of ability andwith a little practice and a few pointers their ability evolves. The maindifference between the average person and the “Artist” is the focused drive. An Artist is driven sometimes to the exclusion of all else and it is this, as theold saying goes, that “Divides the Men from the Boys” but isn’t this true of somany things? The driven Artist often has to be reminded to join the rest ofthe world once in a while. Without a doubt these individuals will alwaysrise to the top in direct proportion to their ability to be driven and focused.

When I teach people painting and drawing it doesn’t take long before I seewhich ones are the ones with ability and the ones with talent. The talentedartists will be focused, and involved in their projects while the ones withabilities will just coast along making due with the minimum effort. Thefinal results will, on the surface look similar but when inspected a littledeeper talent will win out. The talented person’s work always has that littlebit of something extra that shines through.

So now the question arises, can I move from just having ability to havingtalent? The answer happily is yes, but only if you can find inside yourselfthe focused drive required in order to push yourself to the next level.

Sometimes that may just look like discipline to practice more in order to perfectdifficult techniques or maybe it will be to get out there and look for representation. It may even be to invent a way of doing things that no one else has done before.Remember “Focused Drive” will give you the edge over ability alone every time, evenif your competition has a greater level of ability than you do.If you can’t find the drive inside you that’s alright too; just accept this about yourselfand learn to enjoy the level you are at and take the pressure off yourself to be the best.Sadly I see individuals with ability abandon what they do completely because theyare not as good as they think they could be. Creativity is the great balm for the soul,it helps to calm and restore our stressed out minds and that in itself makes it a passtime worth perusing, as long as you take it one day at a time.

Every autumn, I feel like a little squirrel, working so hard to get readyfor the long winter ahead, storing and preserving fruits and vegetables from my garden

and from our local farmers markets. I try to buy from all of them to help support them intheir business. Lately I was given some beautiful pears from Mrs. Spagnolo, one of my dear

customers. I made for the +rst time some preserved pears with our crystallized ginger in a delicious syrup. Then I canned some ofmy garden's fall raspberries. My grandaughter Jade helped to climb the ladder and pick my crabapples from a dear little treewhich has only been planted for about 5 years, yet I get enough crabapples to make several batches of wonderful sparkling jelly.Try some of my easy recipes so you can go down to your cold-storage and pick out your own mason jar of jelly or fruit.

Tomorrow, we will be celebrating 31 years in business serving Cornwall and area with the best quality in bulk foods, spices, local honey, chickens, turkeys and beef and specialty foods for diabetics and celiacs. I couldn't have chosen a better way toearn my living. I just look forward to going to work and helping so many people daily. You have become friends, not justcustomers, and I am grateful to be able to serve you along with my daughter Tammy and my grandchildren. Three generations, just imagine! Thank you for your loyalty and continued patronage.

My personal health problems witheczema and psoriasis started meon the path of alternative healingmethods. In 1992 I begantraveling to Binghamton NY tosee an Iridologist. With dietchange, taking herbalsupplements, I began to see

improvements. Understanding thereason for my compromised health, and

experiencing the positive results, I began to takecorrespondence courses from Jack Richardson inCalifornia to learn Iridology.

Continuing to expand my knowledge and educationtraveling to Syracuse, buffalo, Rochester and PA takingclasses through the certified Natural Healthprofessionals, learning many aspects of holistic healing.Embracing more alternative methods of healing, I begantaking courses through the Bach Institute, using floweressences for emotional healing. Sometimes in life, onemay experience abuse, loss of a loved one, tragedies ormajor life changes. Whatever it may be, flower essenceshave the ability to help heal.

Expanding my knowledge further, traveling to Syracusetaking classes from Young living, learning about essentialoils and their effectiveness on the body and emotions.

I am a mom of 3 beautiful young ladies, 3 handsomeyoung men and one that went ahead. I am a grandma to5 precious grandchildren. I was a homeschool mom for20 years and co-owned the Natural Way for 17 years.

My knowledge and experiences have made me thesuccessful women I am today.
