Pops Goes The Country Universal South’s Phil Vassar is Nashville’s latest crossover, but orchestral music seems an unlikely destination for a country singer. Nevertheless, that was Vassar onstage in Boston Saturday night (5/30) with a nice little backing band known as the Boston Pops. The occasion was the Share The Beat concert hosted by James Denton (Desperate Housewives) and benefiting the James Redford (yes, Robert’s son) Institute for Transplant.

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life CMT Radio Live host Cody Alan discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Radney Foster, See What You Want To See: I have probably listened to the entire album thousands of times. It opened up my ears to the depth of lyrics and melodies in music. Radney is genius, and I have experienced all his amazing music since discovering this album. 2. Tim McGraw, Florence, SC 1993: I was at a turning point in my life, trying to figure

out whether to follow my broadcast dreams or change my college and career plans. At this concert, I realized that I loved the music scene so much that I knew I wanted to be one of the guys who introduced music to people through broadcast entertainment. It became crystal clear to me that night. Since then, I have been blessed to have many opportunities to do just that. 3. Jack Ingram/A Little Bit: Jack rocks in every way. He gave me this song when he was without a record label, and I loved it! I was MD at The Wolf in Dallas at the time. He had no idea that I would actually play the song, but I did. And within a few weeks, the song broke through the Top 40 on the charts. It showed me the strength of a great artist and song and helped me understand how to break music.4. Paul Simon: Hearing anything from Paul Simon makes me nostalgic, and takes me back to my dad developing my first memories of music as a young child.5. I’m Trying To Be Like Jesus: It’s a Mormon children’s song. Not the coolest answer I realize but its simplicity is one that I have leaned on often in my life. It has changed me. You did want to know “music that shaped my life” right? • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: I don’t think I’ve ever completely made it through all of Stairway to Heaven. Uh-oh, I think I hear the clicking of angry emails headed my direction right now.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Anything by Queen. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: See What You Want To See by Radney Foster. • One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Ludacris is my favorite rapper. Can a country guy have a favorite rapper? One of my guilty pleasures. I admit it. Don’t judge me.

Country Aircheck Northeast beat reporter Amanda Leonardo (who moonlights on WCTK/Providence’s Tim Leary & The Morning Showgram) filed this report: “Phil and two band mates took the Symphony Hall stage first for acoustic versions of ‘Love Is A Beautiful Thing’ and ‘I’m Alright.’ He came back later with the Pops, and Conductor John Williams introduced him by saying, “He is an award winning, prize winning musical author and, as I’m told, he is Nashville’s piano man.’ Vassar said of the unlikely collaboration, ‘They’re not going to believe this back in Tennessee. Wow! Hillbillies take over Boston!’ He and the Pops performed ‘This Is My Life’ and ‘Prayer Of A Common Man,’ and Vassar got choked up introducing closer ‘American Child,’ noting it was inspired by his late father and grandfather.”
