When we were not at Tatton, we also experienced what it was like to be a Victorian schoolchild. In those times, children were expected to be seen and not heard. You can imagine how difficult it was for some of us to be quiet and needless to say, one or two

of us were caned (only in role play)! Our lessons included tables, arithmetic, dictation, an object lesson and drill. It was

surprising how many children failed the hand and nail inspection!

Year 5 Trip To Tatton Park

On Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd December, Year

5 braved the freezing weather conditions and travelled back in time to

1886 to try out for positions as Victorian Servants in

Tatton Hall. As royalty were expected, the hall had to be in tip top condition, hence the need for extra help.

The butler and senior servants soon put us through our paces. Within a few hours we had learnt to lay the dust, brush and scrub floors, polish silver, fold napkins, make beds,

set a coal fire, empty chamber pots and prepare Lady Edgerton’s favourite scones for afternoon tea.

Everyone had the name of a servant who actually worked in the hall in days gone by. There

was great delight as we exchanged our modern names

for Matilda, Connie, Alice, George, Alfred, Abraham and

even a Thompson Flood! At the end of the day, before we

returned home, we were told what these servants actually did. Many of us were laundry maids, housemaids, footmen and stable

hands. It was great fun!

Important last week of term information(13th-17th December)

There will be no after school activities in the last week of term.

As we are coming to the end of the TermRemember to pass on useful information such as holiday dates and

finishing times to child-minders, grandparents and to any other carer involved in escorting your children to/from school.

Let them read your copy of the newsletters.

Check out the website for more details and to download an entry form.

If you would like to make a donation towards the cost of the newsletter, an advert for your local business could be placed in our newsletter. Please contact Mrs Gregson

in the school office for further details.

We at Norwood were saddened to hear of the decision to close the Botanic Gardens Museum. We have taken many year groups on school trips to the museum and also have the facility to borrow information and artefacts to help us with topics such as the

Victorians and Southport. It is also a venue where we may exhibit children's work, particularly during events such as the Arts Festival. If the museum closes we will lose this valuable resource. A 'Save the Botanic Gardens Museum' petition is

available for anyone in school to sign. If you would like to sign this petition please call to the school office.

Botanic Gardens Museum Closure

Used StampsA collection box is in the foyer for

used postage stamps. As we anticipate receiving lots of Christmas cards, please remember to save the

stamps for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

The Southport Photographic Society & The Rotary Club of Southport Links

Each entrant may enter up to three images of any subject.

The Atkinson Art Gallery (normally the venue for the exhibition) is closed for redevelopment

and so the exhibition will be held in Wayfarers Arcade as last year.

The exhibition will run for three weeks so there is plenty of opportunity for children and parents

to view their photographs on display.

The opening ceremony will be on Saturday 12th March at 11 am. The Worshipful, the Mayor of

Sefton, Councillor Maureen Fearn JP, will

present the prizes.

Here are some interesting facts about the museum, supplied by Mr Hesketh, who as you know, is one of the Lifeboat crew. Some of the staff & children at Norwood are descendants of the lifeboat crew who perished in the 1886 Mexico disaster.

The documents and original artefacts from the early lifeboats are held in the Botanic Gardens Museum. Items such as the oars from the Eliza Fernley lifeboat, and original photographs are all held in trust on our behalf.

What will happen to these and other local historical items when the museum closes?

Please sign the petition to keep the museum open, as it is a valuable resource that our children use.

Children in the Spotlight

The School Council would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who supported the Rotary Shoebox Appeal. We collected over 135 boxes & were able to present a cheque for

£180, as many of you, so generously made extra donations. We hope the contents of the boxes will bring pleasure to many children.

Getting to know our Governors

Our reporters have recently tracked down our very busy governors to ask them about their roles.

Pictured here is Councillor Sumner who is our Local Authority Governor.

Q. What do you like to do in your spare time?

A. Because I’m a Councillor for Norwood Ward, spare time comes in between doing casework for residents, going to different meetings both in Southport and Liverpool and lots of other things that fill a councillor’s life. So, in the Summer I

like to spend time in the garden as there is always lots to do. But, Jamie, in the winter I follow my two favourite football teams, Manchester United, and on the telly, Real Mallorca in the Spanish La Liga. I also like cooking (and eating).

Q. What do you like about being a Governor?

A. I do enjoy being a school Governor here at Norwood. I like to see how different school is now to when I went to school

in the dark old days. There is so much to do apart from normal school work, and you should have seen what school dinners were like then uggggggggh!

Q. What made you want to be a Governor?

A. I wanted to be a Governor at Norwood because my family go back to the 1800’s living in the area. In the 1920’s my Mum went to the Old Norwood Road School that was sited where Keats Terrace now has houses. The school was then part of All

Souls Church, which was on the corner of Peel Street and Norwood Road, now Henshaws. My Aunty, and in the late 1950’s my brother, also went to Norwood Road School. Because of these links I was so pleased when I was given the opportunity to become a Governor of this school ten years ago. None of my grand children go to the school because as they live in the North East it would be too far to go home for lunch!

Congratulations to Norwood's Year 6 Uni-hockey team who WON the Y6 tournament at Bishop David Sheppard

Primary School.

They beat BDS and St Phillips to become Champions!

Well done to all the players who battled extremely hard, but a special mention to Tom Stewart for his guts and

determination throughout the tournament!

Mrs Rigby was very proud of all the children who took part.
