First of all, we will be having our Continuing Education Class on July 8, 2010 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. It is a free 2 hour CE Ethics Class. Tabitha Richardson has secured our speaker, Anthony Cox of Hermes Sargent Bates, LLP and he will speak to us on Bad Faith Litigation. We will have our regular Monthly Dinner Meeting at 6:00 p.m. following the CE Class on July 8 th and our speaker will be Don Rapport from Security Plus TX to speak to us about Personal Safety. Our Annual Membership Party will be on July 22, 2010, hosted by President-Elect Shanna Sutton. Please look for the invitation from her in the newsletter with all the details. The 15 th Annual Bowling Tournament will be held on August 20, 2010 at 300 Lanes in Addison again this year. I am very excited about having our Tournament at this venue again this year. If you haven’t already gotten your team together or you wish to be placed on a team, please contact Mary Donlon. Community Service for July will be BearHugs. This is a project started by one of our own members, Crystal Santana. New Books and Bears are collected and donated and distributed to sick kids at Children’s hospitals. She will recruit 2-3 people to go with her to make the donation. We are still collecting items for troops and our final push for this project will be in August when we mail our items overseas. You will find a nomination form enclosed with this month’s newsletter. I strongly encourage each and every one to complete a form and return it Toni Campbell, Nominating Chair. They will be due by the July 8, 2010 meeting, when intentions will be stated. Elections will be held at the August 12, 2010 general meeting. In the very near future, you will also receive a copy of the updated bylaws for your perusal before they are to be approved. I personally wish to thank The Board for all of their time and hard work! The Buzz on Safety…

Today, I received an interesting article on using Wasp Spray as a safety defense and immediately wanted to

share it with you. According to the article, wasp spray will temporarily blind an attacker until they get to the

hospital for an antidote. But, there was one sentence that had me hesitant. The article said “Wasp spray will

kill a snake.” Will it?!? I don’t want anyone to be bitten by a snake especially while trying to kill it with wasp

spray so I decided to do a little research the article on the internet.

According to Snopes.com, this story is a mixture of truth and says….

Wasp spray can have effects similar to pepper spray when used for self-defense, and some have advocated its

use for this purpose. Val Glinka teaches self-defense at Sylvania Southview High School in Toledo, Ohio. For

decades, he's suggested putting a can of wasp and hornet spray near your door or bed. Glinka says, "This is

better than anything I can teach them." Glinka considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than

mace or pepper spray. “The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if someone tries to break into your home,”

Glinka says "spray the culprit in the eyes". It's a tip he's given to students for decades. It's also one he wants

everyone to hear. “If you're looking for protection, Glinka says look to the spray. “That's going to give you a

chance to call the police; maybe get out. Maybe even save a life.”

However, some have advised against adopting wasp spray as an alternative to pepper spray, primarily for two

reasons:

1. The active ingredient in most wasp sprays are pyrethrins, compounds derived from a species of the

chrysanthemum plant which penetrate the nervous systems of insects & kills them. Since wasp sprays

are not formulated to be used directly on human beings, some critics maintain, they should not be

employed as a form of non-lethal defense as their safety and effectiveness for this purpose has not been

sufficiently tested, and the toxic effects of pyrethrin could potentially be more harmful than expected.

2. Many jurisdictions specifically prohibit the use of any self-defense sprays other than pepper spray. For

example, the Michigan penal code allows only: “The reasonable use of a self-defense spray or foam

device containing not more than 2% oleoresin capsicum by a person in the protection of a person or

property under circumstances which would justify the person’s use of physical force.” Additionally,

most spray insecticide containers include warning labels stating that “It is a violation of federal law to

use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.”

So after reading this, I was not sure what to do and I still did not know if wasp spray would kill a snake.

However, I thought it was interesting enough to share what I found since several of you probably got this same

email. Plus, when you are faced with a dangerous situation, you need to know what actions can be taken to get

you safely out of harm’s way.

Please join us on July 8, 2010 at our dinner meeting when we will have Don Rapport with Security Plus TX as

our guest speaker. He will be discussing how to take care of your personal safety and he will have some

personal safety items (pepper spray, window & door alarms, etc) for sale if you would like to purchase them.

Thank you Stephanie for getting Mr. Rapport to speak to us!
