For some of us, concentration, memory recalling and self-control come easy while other people may struggle with these abilities. One theory posits that stress hormones and stressful experiences as early as in the first six months of life can affect how our brain develops. Based on our stress encounters, we begin to build the brains we “think” we need to survive.

Join us as Dr Anne Rifkin-Graboi from A*STAR’s Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences explains how childhood events and stress management techniques in dealing with everyday stressors can influence brain and cognitive development. She will demonstrate ways her laboratory tests these abilities in children and adults, and discuss how early childhood brain development can be a precursor to adult abilities.

Kanga is a cute little kangaroo but he has a bad habit that his friends dislike: he cannot control his anger when things go wrong. He gets even angrier when his friends ignore him. One day, he gets so angry that he destroys all the flowers in his mother’s garden. His mother becomes angry too, but she counts to 10 to let her anger go. Happily, when playing with his friend a few days later, Kanga learns to count his anger away too.

PRiNCESS diSGRACE: fiRSt tERm At tALL tOWERS Author: lou KuenzlerPublisher: london: Scholastic, 2014Call no.: Junior lending English KuE

This book is part of the series titled Princess Disgrace. The main character, Ordinary Grace, attends Tall Towers, a school where girls go to learn to become princesses. However, Grace is a very clumsy girl; if she goes to sleep in bed at night, she will wake up to find herself on the floor instead!

My favourite part of the book is when Grace learns how to groom and take good care of her horse, and ride on it. At the same time, Grace also needs to face three villains in the story who are always teasing her: Precious and the twins, Trinket and Truffle.

Can Grace graduate to become a proper princess? Will she get over her clumsy ways? Borrow this book to read and find out for yourself!

Junior Reading Ambassador Review

thE AdVENtuRES Of SOPhiE mOuSE: thE CLOVER CuRSE Author: Poppy Green Publisher: new York: little Simon, 2016Call no.: Junior lending Simple Fiction English GRE

Sophie believes that the rare four-leaf clover brings good luck because most clovers have only three leaves. However, on the day she brings a four-leaf clover home, she gets caught in the rain and her paintings are ruined. As more things go wrong for her, Sophie decides to throw away the four-leaf clover to end her bad luck. This is a lively story about how children get caught up in make-believe and how reality is uncovered. An interesting read for imaginative children.
