It’s hard to imagine that sailors of long ago could have mistaken the large gentle manatee or dugong for the beautiful, but heartless siren of folklore. Tales of mermaids are nearly universal and date back to 1000

these unfamiliar creatures, and saw how they carried their young, cradled in their arms similar to a human carrying a baby, they thought they came across some form of the fabled mermaid. But hair? Really? Well, according to reports, these lonely sailors probably saw the manatees break the water’s surface underneath patches of seaweed, giving the impression of long hair. Either that or they were out at sea too long or a bit too much rum was consumed. In any event, we now know that these gentle creatures are related to the elephant, are intelligent and curious. Unfortunately, they are an endangered species and according to population viability studies carried out in 1997, eventual extinction is probable for the Florida manatees without additional protection. Please help do your part in keeping our waters manatee-friendly. Here are some boating guidelines to keep in mind when enjoying the coastal waters this summer especially since it is the key

season for manatee mating. Avoid the temptation to pet a nearby manatee since it encourages them to get too close to boaters and increases their chance of a violent collision with boat propellers. Never try to push the manatee back to deeper water as they can be injured or, due to their size, could inadvertently cause an injury. Wear sunglasses. It helps you spot animals just beneath the surface of the water. Pay attention to the local signs: “No Wake” means you must not travel at a speed that would create waves alongside or behind your boat. “Caution Zones” manatees gather here so use caution even if you do not see

them physically. “Idle Only Zones” these are areas where manatees live in large numbers. Move only at speeds that allow you to navigate. “No Enter” means do not take your

boat into this area. If you spot a stranded, seriously injured or dead

manatee anywhere in state waters, do not get near them. Instead call the FWC Wildlife

Alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922). While there are many factors involved

in ensuring the survival of these gentle mammals, by being aware of their

struggle and educating ourselves, we can be part of the solution. If you’re

check out Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium’s website: www.mote.org or visit their facility at 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway, Sarasota, Florida, 941-388-4441, [email protected]. Let’s make sure the manatees don’t become folklore like the mermaid.

Siesta Beach is renowned for its breath-taking sunsets, easy-going waves, and gor-geous crystal white sand. The sand is 99% pure quartz, soft and cool to the touch. Among the many awards it has earned are the “Whitest, Finest Beach Sand in the World” (The Great International White Sand challenge, 1987), “The Best Sand Beach in America” (The Travel Channel, 2004) and for 2011, it was rated #1 beach in the 21st an-nual Top 10 Beach List, produced by coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, Director of Florida International University’s Labora-tory for Coastal Research.

Walking along, or swimming and playing in th Gulf of Mexico or merely basking in the tropical sun is enough fun for many folks, but others are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many amenities, which include tennis and vollyball courts, shaded playground and picnic/barbecue areas and convienent concession stands. Shallow water near shorline and year-round lifeguard protection make it a great family beach. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed to help special needs visitors cross the sand.

There’s always something for everyone to do at Siesta Beach. It’s island location is within easy walking distance of the many

village shops and restaurants located in the Siesta Village.

Crescent Beach offers the same lush, white sands, azure waters and stunning sunsets, but it is relatively secluded and quiet, as it has only one public access road. Located just south of Siesta Beach, the scene here tends to be more peaceful and private. At the southern tip of this beach is Point of Rocks - a lovely snorkeling and diving area that is rich with coral rock formations as well ascolorful and abundant marine life. Crescent Beach visitors staying in nearby resorts, rentals and beach clubs rave (but only to their closest friends) about Siesta Key’s best “non-private private” beach.

Turtle Beach is at the southern tip of Siesta Key, and affords a sportier, “family play” beach experience. The beach has picnic areas, a playground, a vollyball court and horseshoe pit. There’s also a boat launch,

Blind Pass Lagoon. There are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local night spots just a short drive away. Turtle Beach is a narrow beach, with a somewhat steeper incline. The sand on the

beach tends to carry more shells, making it perfect for beach combers and shell

to take home and treasure, especially after a storm.

|It’s a Family Affair at SKOB... What could be better than having oysters at an authentic Florida Oyster Bar? How about oysters and live entertainment seven nights a week. The Siesta Key Oyster Bar is better known as SKOB (much as we refer to this publication as SKIV). Located in the heart of Siesta Key Village, it is a family owned and operated business. Jack, the father, retired from Chicago to Sarasota. His daughters Jill and Beth, along with their families, were soon to follow. Once Jill found out the Siesta Key Oyster Bar was for sale, it didn’t take much to convince her sister and brother-in-law to join her quest to possess the true family beach bar. The SKOB was purchased by “The Family” in November of 2003. The family has grown beyond Jill, Geno, Beth and Keith; they consider staff and regular customers as part of the family. Keeping true to their name, the SKOB’s specialty is oysters on the half shell. They even have a Crustacean Happy Hour that happens

every day from 3 – 6 daily featuring oysters

menu has a large assortment of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood entrees and a very neat kid’s menu. You can enjoy your meal on a large deck overlooking Ocean Blvd or inside with the air-conditioning. The SKOB offers full bar service and has a late night Happy Hour featuring 2 for 1 drink specials starting at 10pm Sunday through

Thursday and 11pm Friday and Saturday. SKOB features live music each and every day! The groups play island favorites like “Margaritaville,” but they also have wide repertoires of popular tunes from today and yesterday. Who knows, you may even catch some great Delta Blues.

The music starts 7pm Monday thru Thursday, 8pm Friday & 1pm Saturday & Sunday.5238 Ocean Blvd. On the Siesta Key Village Map location B #45.

Captain Curt’s award winning New England Clam Chowder is just the beginning of the delicious items on our extensive menu. A large variety of crab plates are available, from Alaskan King, Snow Crab and

For the children... Captain Curt’s is perfect. The Children’s Menu offers a number of tasty dishes -- with fries -- for just $5.99.Children’s dinners are served on our original “Crabby Frisbee,” which is theirs to keep and take home.

You just cannot beat Captain Curt’s menu for Florida favorites as well as delicious traditional entrees.

If more of a good thing is possible, visit Captain Curt’s Back Room Saloon. The full menu is available in the saloon with food and drink specials offered daily.

FIRST PLACE WINNER:BEST New England Clam Chowder

To say we’re proud is an understatement. Going to Newport, RI to compete for the title of Best New England Clam Chowder was a long shot at best. Many thought we were “Nuts!” We constantly heard: “No matter how good the chowder is, the people of New England are not going to allow the title of “Best Chowder” to go to Florida!” They had history on their side, too. After 26 years of competition, only one other restaurant outside of New England had taken home the title. It’s kind of like a New York restaurant winning the “Best Grouper Sandwich” award at a Florida Seafood Festival.

We had faith though. We knew our chowder was the best, and we proved it to them. After two days and serving up over 120 gallons of our chowder to some 15,000 “chowder heads,” the people voted. Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar took First Place!

We believe winning is a testament to just how good our food is here at Captain Curt’s and to the dedication of our staff in preparing and serving it. During the festival, the staff truly “went the extra mile!” They worked hard to bring home the title. We are so proud and happy to have them. We couldn’t have won without their dedication and hard work!

Stop by Captain Curt’s today and enjoy the best New England Clam Chowder in the World! And meet the great people that brought the title home to Siesta Key!

Island Living Real Estate|Summer Prices on Siesta Key...

Shelley McGuire, GRI, Realtor® Cell 941.544.2702shelleymcguire@prudentialpalmsrealty.comsarasotaparadisehomes.comA Passion for Paradise! 941-926-7000 | 6583 Midnight Pass Rd., Siesta Key, 34242

Property prices continue to be “super heated” here on Siesta Key. Below is a snapshot of sold properties on the island in the last six

months

SINGLE FAMILY HOMES:Lowest sold price was $200,500. Highest sold price was $5,900,000.

CONDOS:Lowest sold price was $145,000 for a 1 BR and $165,500 for 2 BR or more. Highest sold price was $2,625,000.

If you compare these prices to what they were a few years ago, you’ll see that they have come down dramatically and right now it’s still a buyer’s market. But, according to Trendgraphix, Inc., in six months the average days on the market for all residential properties went from 199 to 176 and as of May, we have 553 properties for sale. Currently, we have about “one year” of inventory for sale; down

absorb, or to be purchased and sold. This is of the utmost importance, since – as the time it takes to absorb the properties for sale speeds up, the gap begins to close on that timetable. What this all means is that as the amount of inventory declines faster, prices begin to stabilize and/or improve. Think of it as the scales beginning to even out. This is what occurs just before the market changes again, to a Seller’s Market and higher prices. Nobody knows for sure when that will be, but it is certainly better to buy on the “down side” than the “up side.” So take advantage of these once-in-a-lifetime reduced prices and extremely low interest rates especially since Siesta Key Beach has been named the #1 Beach in America for 2011. This ensures that obtaining ownership here now will always be a solid investment, over time. Whether you are an investor interested in the best rental complexes, or want your own private place to enjoy, I can provide you with many more statistics and facts about the Siesta Key market

your piece of paradise.

What could be better than having oysters at an authentic Florida Oyster Bar? How about oysters and live entertainment seven nights a week! You can do just that at Siesta Key Oyster Bar (SKOB) located in Siesta Key Village. The groups play ol’ island favorites like “Margaritaville,” but they also have wide repertoires of popular tunes from today and yesterday. Who knows, you may even catch some great Delta Blues.

You’ll love the unique sounds of each. Come listen to the great music on SKOB’s open air patio,

overlooking Ocean Blvd. In Siesta Key Villageseven days a week!
