Muslims constitute the world's secondlargest religious group. According to a2010 study and released January 2011,[1][2] Islam has 1.57 billion adherents,making up over 23% of the worldpopulation.[3][4][5] Most Muslims are oftwo denominations: Sunni (75–90%)[6]

or Shia (10–20%).[7] Ahmadis representabout 1% of the Muslim population.[8]

Islam is the dominant religion in theMiddle East, North Africa, the Horn ofAfrica, the Sahel,[1][9][10][11] and someparts of Asia.[12] Large communities ofMuslims are also found in China, the Balkans, India and Russia.[1][13] Other parts of the world host largeMuslim immigrant communities; in Western Europe, for instance, Islam is the second largest religion afterChristianity, where it represents 6% of the total population.[14]

According to the Pew Research Center in 2010 there were 50 Muslim­majority countries.[15][16] Around62% of the world's Muslims live in South and Southeast Asia, with over 1 billion adherents.[17] The largestMuslim population in a country is in Indonesia, a nation home to 12.7% of the world's Muslims, followedby Pakistan (11.0%), India (10.9%), and Bangladesh (9.2%).[1][18] About 20% of Muslims live in Arabcountries.[19] In the Middle East, the non­Arab countries of Turkey and Iran are the largest Muslim­majoritycountries; in Africa, Egypt and Nigeria have the most populous Muslim communities.[1][18] The study foundmore Muslims in the United Kingdom than in Lebanon and more in China than in Syria.[1]
