Theme: In The Name of Jesus Christ

Sub-Theme: The Humanity of Christ (4)

Topic: His Human Nature -1: Hunger

Texts: Mark 11:12-14, 20-24

Aims: To show that Jesus lived as a normal human

being in His incarnate State

Introduction: In His incarnation, Jesus Christ experienced all that

every human being did (Heb. 4:15). Today’s text states very clearly

that “when they came from Bethany, He was hungry” (Mark

11:12.) Again, our Lord was also desperately hungry of doing the

will of His Father (John 4:31-35). His being hungry, just like all of

us do, is a further proof that He was truly like every human being

during His incarnation.

Study Guide/Questions:

1. How the reaction of Jesus to hunger in Mark 11:12-14

2. prove to us His humanity? Read again Mark 11:12-14,

20-24

2. Why do you think Jesus cursed the fig tree; and what

spiritual message do you think He was conveying by

doing so? Matt 3:10; 7:18-19; John 15:1-5.

3. Discuss the human nature of Christ in His hunger to do the

will of God in John 4:31-38, and implications for us

who are His followers today. See also Matt.5:6

Conclusion: Christ was hungry to show that He was a real human

being while on earth. However, it must be noted that He did not

allow His hunger to overshadow the hunger for God’s will in His

life and mission on earth.

Food For Thought: To be hungry is real human nature and is not

sinful.

Memory Verse: Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and

thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled”.

LORD, ACCEPT THE ALMS WE OFFER

1. Lord, accept the alms we offer,

Tokens of our love to thee;

Out of grateful hearts we render

This our act of charity;

Even though full well we know

All we have to thee we owe.

2. Use them, Father, to thy glory,

Teach us fully how to give,

For his sake who leaving heaven

Gave us all that we might live:

All we have could not suffice

To repay his Sacrifice.

3. Now the priest upon the altar

Doth present the bread and wine,

To become, in wondrous manner,

For our souls the food divine:

Soul and body by thee fed,

Praise we give for daily bread.

4. With our alms and our oblations

Take, O Lord, our prayers of love;

Make thy Church in fullest concord

Serve as one, below, above;

And in fellowship complete

Reach at last thy mercy-seat.

KNOWING THE KINGDOM BOUND FAMILIES Joshua said, “….but as for me and my house (family) we will serve the

Lord.” Joshua 24:14&15.

Knowledge strictly is the apprehension by the mind of some fact or truth in

accordance with its real nature. For one to know God’s Kingdom, it must

be He has revealed Himself to someone. Job postulated, “can you find out

the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? Job

11:7. Then in a step forward, He (Job) said, “its measure is longer than the

earth, and broader than sea.” Job 11:9.

What Job was saying was that, the highest knowledge possible to man is

knowledge of God. He (GOD) is knowable in the measure in which He

has revealed Himself in creation.

Paul the Apostle of Christ said, “For what can be known about God is plain

to them, because God has shown it to them. Ever since the creation of

earth, His invisible nature, namely, His eternal power and daity has been

clearly perceived in the things that have been made. Rom. 1:19-20b.

What we are saying in effect is that if we have the basic knowledge of

whom God is, either through His works of creation of earth, personal

contact with those whom He has created in His image and all other living

and non living things, you would have gotten the knowledge of His

Kingdom. The family been mentioned in our sub-theme, in the Old

Testament period, there was not a correspondence word “family”. It was

sometimes referred to “household, tribe or nation”. The example of such

that quickly comes to mind was that of Joshua. He was made bold enough

to tell the Israelites that if they bluntly refused to stop following the foreign

gods, the gods of the Canaanites that their fore-fathers worshipped, he said

his family will not sleep and put their heads together in the same position

with Israelites. Other notable family of respect and dignity were the family

of Cornelius Acts. 10, Lydia – Acts 16.

We learnt that both baptism and Lord Supper took place in homes of some

of the families (Household). The Church leaders were in most of the time

selected. 1 Tim 3:2ff. Also behind every family stands the universal

fatherhood of God. Eph. 3:14. This is the reason while the Church is

therefore also viewed as God’s household (Family) Eph. 2:19.

They are the ones in oneness with the good and formidable homes, made of

one man, one woman together with their God given Child or Children that

the Bible called, “the heritage of God” Ps. 127:3. They are the family that

are nitting and twine in one faith, in one spiritual accord with God and His

Kingdom. “And the man said, this is now bone of my bones, and flesh of

my flesh …. And they shall be one flesh.” Gen. 2:23 & Gen. 2:14.

In this family (Household) Children are called upon to honour their father

and their mother. Paul concretized it as he calls on the Children of such

family to obey their parent in the Lord in all things all because this is well

pleasing in the Lord.

Without been farfetched, such a family will surely live in harmony to know

God and His Kingdom, all because they will be fruitful in all their spiritual

endeavor. Such as:

1. They will on daily basis manifest faith in the Lord as one of the

principle of the kingdom of God. The gospel must have been

well disseminated for the salvation of their souls. To the

conviction of their lives, knowing fully well that, “no one who

believes in God will be put to shame.” Rom. 10:11. 2. They will manifest on daily basis, the Christian conduct. Amongst

many other principles to be found in the Kingdom of God is for the

family to walk to command the respect of others. I Thess. 4:11&12.

3. The family will know that it is their Christian duty to be fully pleasing

to God. Col. 1:10.

4. The family that are bound together will know how to walk in the Spirit

with God in His Kingdom. Gal. 5:25.

5. As part of the principle of God’s Kindgom, the family that are bound

together will walk in newness of life. Rom 6:4.

Therefore, by way of specific injunction, the family that is bound

in the Lord’s Kingdom is commanded:

1. To control their body. 1 Cor. 9:27

2. To forgive those who wrong them. Rom 12:20

3. To subdue anger. Eph. 4:26; James 1:19.

4. To have no fellowship with sinners. Ps. 1:1&2; I Thess. 3:6

5. To live peaceably with all men. Rom 12:18; Heb. 12:14.

In conclusion, the family that are bounded nitting in one accord, in

oneness of mind, in harmony, in togetherness, in one Spirit with God’s Kingdom knows the characteristics and the principles of the

Kingdom in that:

1. They will not involve their family in grumbling against God in any

circumstances or the challenges of this world. 1 Cor. 10:10

2. They will love their neighbor. 1 John2:10 & 3:14.

3. They are prayerful family. 1 Sam 1:10.

4. The family will be forgiven. Matt. 26:28; 18:23.

5. The family will not backslide even at the time of tribulation and

adversities. Isa 30:2

If I may ask, How are your family faring towards God’s Kingdom?

The time is running out, the days is about over, be on the look-out,

be watchful. Keep fit in Him who is able to sustained till the end.

Remain Blessed.
