MESSAGE FROMTHE PRESIDENTThis year 2012 ISF celebrates its 40th anniversary.It may seem a long period but it is just the beginning!

Since we reported on 35 years o ISF history, 5 years ago, a lot haschanged.End 2008 ISF set up an autonomous secretariat in the House o Sports inAntwerp, Belgium.Since the General Assembly in 2010, ISF engaged its Secretary General towork ull time autonomously rom a member ederation.Recently ISF drew up a strategic plan and action plans which cover market-ing & communication, sporting and educational topics.A new modern website will be launched soon.

Not only the number o sports on the programme increased and consequent-ly the number o participants but also the scope o ISF activities widened.ISF stresses now, more than in the past, education through sport and the leg-acy o its organisations, education to citizenship by involving more young-sters in the organisation o the events, solidarity programmes, the inclusiono disabled students and the cooperation with international sport ederationsand international organisations having similar aims.

In 10 years rom now we should have raised the number o aliated coun-tries on all continents to the European number and ocus also on cont inentalactivities.

In 10 years rom now we should have consolidated our place on the inter-national sport scene and be even more than today an esteemed partner ininternational youth sport and education.

Looking orward to the uture o the ISF, we should not only show a proound

respect or its history and or the work o all those, volunteers and ocers,who brought it to lie and caused it to fourish but we should also be proudand most grateul to be part o it!

Lanne 2012 sera celle des 40 ans de lISF.Cest certes un jubil, mais ce nest que le dpart !

Depuis lexpos sur lhistoire de notre dration lors des 35 ans, quede choses ont chang!En 2008, lISF a mis sur pied son propre secrtariat permanent, dansles locaux de la Maison des Spor ts Anvers, Belgique.Depuis lAssemble Gnrale de 2010 lISF a entrin lengagementdun Secrtaire gnral temps plein, indpendamment dune dra-tion membre.Plus rcemment, lISF a achev llaboration dun plan stratgique assortidun plan daction concernant les domaines du marketing/ communica-tion, du sport et de la pdagogie. Un nouveau site internet, avec toutesles onctionnalits actuelles, sera notamment trs prochainement lanc.

Avec laugmentation du nombre de sports repris au programme, ce quiait voluer considrablement le nombre de participants, lISF a aussivoulu accrotre lenvergure de ses activits.LISF accorde prsent une plus grande attention lducation par lesport et lhritage laiss par ses maniestations. Lducation la cit-oyennet par limplication des jeunes dans lorganisation de ses vne-ments, les programmes de solidarit, lintgration dlves handicapset les collaborations avec dautres drations sportives ou organismesinternationaux poursuivant les mmes buts en sont autant dexemples.Dans 10 ans, nous devrions avoir atteint sur tous les continents le tauxdaliation que nous connaissons actuellement pour lEurope. Cela nouspermettra ainsi de nous ocaliser galement sur les activits continentales.Dans 10 ans, nous devrions avoir consolid notre place sur la scnesportive mondiale et devrions, encore plus quaujourdhui, tre consid-r comme un interlocuteur et un partenaire apprci en matire de sportinternational pour les jeunes et dducation.Tout en nous rjouissant pour ce utur de lISF, nous devons non seulementmontrer un proond respect pour ces 40 ans dhistoire et le travail de tousceux, bnvoles ou ociels, qui ont amen notre dration l o elle est,mais aussi tre ers et reconnaissants davoir la chance den aire partie !Bon anniversaire!Andrea Delpin

In diesem Jahr eiert die ISF ihren 40. Geburtstag.Au den ersten Blick eine lange Zeit aber eigentlich erst der Beginn!Seit wir vor 5 Jahren von der 35 jhrigen Geschichte der ISF berichtethaben, hat sich in unserer Fderation vieles verndert.Ende 2008 ist die ISF in ein eigenstndiges Sekretariat im Haus desSports in Antwerpen, Belgien eingezogen.Nach der Generalversammlung in 2010, hat die ISF ihren Gener-alsekretr als Vollzeitarbeitskrat, unabhngig vom Verband eines Mit-gliedslandes, angestellt.Krzlich entwickelte die ISF einen Strategischen Plan sowie daraus resul-tierende Aktionsvorhaben, welche die Bereiche Marketing und Kommuni-kation sowie sportliche und pdagogogische Themen umassen.Eine neue und moderne Weseite wird sehr bald startklar sein.Nicht nur die Anzahl der Sportarten die au dem Programm stehen istgestiegen und damit verbunden die Teilnehmerzahl, nein auch die Be-deutung der ISF Aktivitten ist grer geworden.Die ISF schenkt heute dem Bereich der Erziehung durch Sport und derNachhaltigkeit ihrer Veranstaltungen eine verstrkte Aumerksamkeit.Durch die strkere Einbindung von Jugendlichen in die Meisterschatenund Veranstaltungen, durch ihre Solidarittsprogramme, durch die Inklu-sion von Jugendlichen mit einer Behinderung und durch die Zusammenar-beit mit internationalen Sportverbnden und internationalen Vereinigun-gen leistet sie ihren Beitrag zur Erziehung zum Brgersinn.In 10 Jahren sollten wir die Zahl der Mitgliedslnder in allen Kontinentenan das europische Niveau herangehrt haben mit einer gleichzeitigen In10 Jahren wollen wir unseren Platz in der internationalen Sportwelt geestigt

sehen und mehr noch als heute als ein geschtzter und verlsslicher Partnerim internationaler Jugendsport - und Erziehungsbereich gelten.Blicken wir in die Zukunt der ISF, sollten wir nicht nur tieen Respekt rihre Geschichte und damit verbunden r die Arbeit aller Freiwilligen undProessionellen empnden, die sie ins Leben geruen und zum erblhengebracht haben, wir sollten auch stolz und zugleich dankbar sein, einTeil von ihr sein zu dren.Viel Glck zum Geburtstag!Andrea Delpin

THE GENESIS OF ISF

Around the mid 1960s, international sporting contests between schools wereon the increase. Besides occasional and haphazard meetings between two ormore schools, tournaments were beginning to be organised regularly in dierent

disciplines: in handball rom 1963, in volleyball rom 1969, in ootball one yearlater and rom 1971 also in basketball. Each o these annual tournaments producedbasic regulations and a standing committee.

The large number o international competitions requiring eliminating heats at thenational level soon gave rise to a desire to co-ordinate these events, within a specifcInternational Federation. To help promote this idea, the Federal Minister o Educationand Arts o the Republic o Austria convened a Conerence at Vienna/Raach in theAutumn o 1971. Here the conditions were discussed or setting up a EuropeanSchool Sport Federation.

Ater very lengthy debates, the project was approved. However, bearing uturedevelopment possibilities in mind, the Federation was not limited to Europeancountries alone. A Provisional Committee, the members o which were chosen romamong the 22 nations present, was set up, and the meeting o the constituent GeneralAssembly was fxed or 4 June 1972 at Beauort/Luxembourg. This meeting adoptedthe Statutes and proceeded to elect the members o the frst Executive Committee.

THE ISF LOGO

The logo o the ISF is presented in a gurative and symbolic context. Its oval line,which skirts the logo, symbolizes the movement in and the attraction by the ISF. Thetwo gurines represent a boy and a girl who enroll in the movement.

The 5 small squares (black red green yellow blue) represent all inhabitantso the world. The sixth little square (white) represents the opening and thebroadmindedness o the ISF. We could say that it is an empty chair or an unexpectedguest at the table during a meal. Whatever the color o skin, wherever the placewhere someone is living, whatever the dierence in religion and in customs, theyouth brings a multiple wealth through its dierences and its diversity.

Violet is the color o temperance, composed on an equal proportion o red andblue. Violet symbolizes the balance between the sense and the spirit, the passion

and the intelligence, love and wisdom, lucidity and considered action.

The trophy, presented by ISF, honours the memory o one o its colleagues whodied, suddenly in 2001 while in oce. It aims to enhance the philosophy and thevalues espoused by supporters o school sport throughout the world.

This trophy allows ISF today to recognise in a member country the remarkable andexemplary nature o its commitment to the cause o school sport.

This trophy allows ISF actively to pursue its strategic directions and at the same timeto support the eorts being made in aliated countries. It should constitute a ormo recognition and encouragement.

The trophy should honour the ocial school sport organisation in a country aliated

to ISF which has distinguished itsel by:- an exceptional contribution to ISF,- sustained national support rom its national government,- being a well-established organisation which emphasises values, ethos, openness

and welcome, supporting the recognition o school sport as a health actor, anissue o responsibility and a means o education in joint youth/adult action,

- any international initiatives.
