Can you tell us a little bit of background about yourself and your design aesthetic?

My interest in jewels all started thanks to my mum, who enrolled me in a beading course when I was in primary school. From then I continued to design and create, selling jewellery at school and at my mum’s boutique until I made the move to Sydney to launch the SAMANTHA WILLS brand. I describe my personal style as ‘bohemian luxe’ – For example styling a Chanel handbag with a pair of old ripped jeans and a Topshop blazer – or a vintage hand tooled bag with a designer dress. It’s about masculine and feminine meeting and the juxtaposition of mixing these elements in your style. This concept is definitely infused into the SW brand and especially in to our bridal collection.

Congratulations on the new bridal line! What’s your inspiration and how would you describe the pieces?

Thank you! The ‘After Dusk’ collection has been a really exciting process. My inspiration for this collection was the bohemian-luxe bride, saying her vows in a setting of luxe chic and where the wild things grow. A unique mixture of a Kate Moss bride meets Margarita Missoni bride.

Do you have a favourite piece from the new collection?

My favorite pieces are the ‘Midnight Garden’ hair accessories. Individual brass leaves overgrown together into a piece that sits in the hair around a messy bun. I think these pieces will transpire from the wedding day and will be a beautiful keepsake that you can wear over and over again, while also being a keepsake of your special day.

How do you recommend brides style the pieces?

I think adding a really statement pair of earrings to vintage lace or a deco style dress has the ability to really modernise the traditional bridal look. I definitely think less is more when it comes to bridal accessories, but your accessories are where you can really reflect your own, personal style and if that is not traditional bride, but you still want to keep tradition in your dress – accessories are the perfect platform for this!

When did you originally introduce your bridal range?

The SAMANTHA WILLS BRIDAL Collection was launched on November 1 in 2012, actually commemorating the 31st anniversary of my parents wedding! The bridal collection was born out of an organic move of our core brand consumers, entering a time in their life where they were getting married / being bridesmaids and wanted to include SAMANTHA WILLS accessories in their wedding day. This year, we have expanded the division beyond just product. We will be launching a platform

on our site called ‘The Wedding Journal’ – a digital diary of the world of SW Bridal.

What advice would you give to brides when it comes to jewellery and their wedding day?

My best advice would be to not stray too far from your style, your wedding day is not the day to try out a new look! If you are usually quite minimalistic opt for a sparkly stud, or if you frequently feature statement necklaces, tie it back with your gown to make it seamless.

Our readers are always looking at ways to incorporate ‘something blue’, do you have any current pieces we could recommend to them?

Each bridal collection, I always include ‘something blue’, in a more modern way – with turquoise being one of our signature stones, there is always a blue palette – which I think is beautiful to have as a secondary in your accessories.

The headpieces are really grabbing me so I would definitely go for the ‘Dance At The Dusk Comb’. The beautiful mixture of jade and turquoise would be simply divine set back with vintage lace.(Seen on page 12)

For comfort’s sake, maybe forgo the silver sixpence in the shoe but yes, do blue! You are setting out on a new adventure so why not mark it this with this time honoured tradition. It doesn’t have to be obvious or even seen, it can be as simple as a blue garter, or a ribbon tied around your bouquet. If you want your something blue to be seen, then look no further, these something blue’s are not made to be hidden away.

The grand arrival. Is it still as much of a necessity to emerge from a white stretch limousine or some other equally impressive vehicle on your wedding day as it once was? Especially if it’s a church wedding and all the guests are safely tucked indoors and don’t actually see you arrive. The only one that does is your photographer and they’re too busy taking photos to be impressed. Is it an expense, on top of all the other expenses, that you really need to incur?

If this decision is being left up to the groom, and he’s a car lover, he will most likely say yes. And that’s perfectly fine, you can then factor cars into your budget. But if you are umming and aahing about this choice, here are a few things to consider before committing to five black BMW’s for the day. Does hiring wedding cars eat into other parts of your wedding budget? Will this limit your choice of wedding photographer, for example? If your answer is yes, then there is your answer. A good photographer is an absolute necessity for your day and restricting your budget in this area could result in less than satisfactory photos. And that’s not an option.

Are you getting married in a church? Will everyone already be inside and seated when you arrive? Will anyone really notice the

car? Probably not, because you are going to be dazzling everyone as you walk up the aisle and a car parked outside will be of little importance to them. If you want to impress bystanders on the street, then yes, by all means go for it, otherwise think again about hiring a car for that particular moment.

Now there are definitely occasions when you should consider hiring a wedding car. If you are getting married outdoors and your vehicle will be delivering you right to the ceremony location and all the guests eyes will be on you. These are the moments when the right vehicle gives the effect you desire for your entrance.

You also need to consider the distance you are travelling in the day. As the ceremony, photos and reception can all be in different locations, you need to be certain you have reliable transport and drivers to make the day run smoothly.

And bear in mind that as newlyweds it is nice to have a moment alone together between these locations to celebrate in your new marriage before spending the rest of the day with family and friends, so piling into a car with everyone else after the ceremony may not allow you that luxury.

Champers darling? I don’t mind if I do.

What not to say…Take note fellas.

When you’re asked to be best man, the one thing that throws many into a tailspin is the thought of speaking publicly. It is a nerve wracking experience if you’re not accustomed to it, and let’s face it, most of us aren’t. So while your instinct may be to disguise your nerves with humour and publicly roast your mate, ignore it. This is not the time to do it.

To guide you in writing your speech, we’ve put together a little list of no no’s. A how not to ruin your friend’s day list. What not to say….

1. “I actually think you’re quite cool. Now.” Don’t mention how you didn’t actually like the bride when you first met her. Just don’t.

2. Don’t pull out thirteen A4 sheets of speech, unless it’s intended as a joke. Short and to the point speeches go over way better than a 20 minute monologue.

3. “So pleased you guys got back together, I really thought you were done for last time you broke up.” No, keep this one in the darkest recesses of your mind.

4. “I like to credit myself for introducing Sarah to Todd. She was my girlfriend at the time.” Umm, no.

5. “Wow, the makeup artist is a miracle worker. I don’t even recognise you.” This is not flattery. And brides should always be flattered, never ridiculed. Make a note. In capital letters.

6. “I like you so much more than Mandy… and Ashleigh.” Under no circumstances, should exes be mentioned. In any way, shape or form.

7. While we’re on the same subject. “Well, you’ve done this before, so third time lucky, right mate?”

8. “Dude, I’ve honestly never seen you that drunk.” Stag do rehashes in front of the bride and families is never, ever a good idea.

9. Language. For obvious reasons we’re not going to write a sentence containing swear words here. That would be inappropriate. Just as inappropriate as using them in your speech.

10. “Can I have a refill?” No.

In all seriousness, we’ve all been to a wedding where the best man’s speech has touched on inappropriate subject matter, or he’s started a short story that’s grown into a chapter book. Even worse, his quest for a little dutch courage has gone awry and he’s rapidly heading towards sleeping it off in a quiet corner. These moments can be stressful for all concerned when it goes wrong, so just remember to keep it brief, complimentary and politely humorous and profanity free. Compliment the bride and her maids, tell a funny story or two about your mate that won’t offend, tell the newlyweds how happy you are for them and wish them a life time of happiness together. Do that and you’ll be the best, best man.

When did Beautiful Beach Weddings first begin?

April 2012 - We are a franchise but are a family business locally owned and operated.

How many weddings would you have during a season?

This year we’ve had 30 weddings and events from January 2014 up until August 2014.

What is the most popular time for weddings in the Whitsundays?

The most popular time is from April - October. Our most bookings per month this year are May and September, but followed closely by August and October.

What type of venues do you decorate?

Many venues throughout the Whitsunday and Mackay regions. Most venues will allow you to use the supplier that you choose and we are happy to provide styling at any location that our clients ask us to. A few locations that we have worked at are:

Montes Resort, Cape Gloucester Resort, Peppers Airlie Beach, Whitsunday Sailing Club, Daydream Island, Palm Bay Long Island, Whitehaven Beach, Bowen Golf Club, The Cove Bowen, The Clarion - Mackay Harbour, Fish D’Vine, Waterline on Shingley and Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens to name a few.

What locations do you travel to?

From Bowen in the north to Sarina in the south, including the Whitsunday Islands and Eungella and Broken River areas. We would also be happy to travel to areas like Moranbah. We’ve travelled as far as Magnetic Island at a special request, but extra fees and charges apply for out of area bookings.

How far in advance of their wedding should couples book their decorator?

Twelve months in advance is a great time to book your decorator.

What are the real benefits of hiring a decorator?

• Less stress. Everyone can relax and enjoy the day instead of trying to rush to get everything set up in time.

• We can save you money - sometimes DIY can become more costly than originally thought, by the time you buy all the components it all adds up quickly.

Jennifer, you were originally from Mackay?

I was born at the Mackay Base Hospital on August 22nd 1975 and grew up in a big old Queenslander on Symonds Street in South Mackay. I lived there until I moved out of home on an overseas adventure when I was 17. Unfortunately the house is no longer there, it was sold and removed from the block when I was 19 and living in the UK so I never really got to say goodbye, I loved that house!

How long have you been in the wedding industry?

I’ve been in the wedding industry for around 12 years but I’ve been sewing for most of my life. When my eldest daughter Neve was two, I returned to college to get a qualification before moving to Brisbane where I managed to get a great job with an amazing bridal designer called Kym Scott. She is still one of my best friends and was bridesmaid at my wedding six years ago.

What was the inspiration behind your latest collection?

I release at least one collection every 12 months, the latest is the Spring Summer 2015 collection and was really influence by

1950’s American Royalty. It is a little preppy but very glamorous.

How did the Bride’s Market come to be?

The Bride’s Market has been a dream for quite a few years and was something I decided to do on my own. It is a membership based retail store where local wedding industry professionals can showcase their work on a semi-permanent basis. We also have a lovely selection of designer gowns and gifts from Australia and the UK.

How has The Bride’s Market been received?

We have been totally blown away by all the response we have received and even other local business owners have congratulated us on such a brilliant concept.

How did you hear of Isaac Weddings?

I think the first time was online and I literally stumbled upon it. I was pleasantly surprised that it was created in Mackay for

the local area by local girls! Such a great magazine and really beautifully put together. It’s a credit to you all!

Any future trend predictions that we can share with our brides?

Outdoor weddings are growing in popularity and we will see more and more marquee and teepee weddings. Trends for wedding gowns – we’re still seeing a lot of lace, and sequins will make a big come back. Neon and graphic prints will be around for another season and vintage is on the way out. Old world style is on its way in - very romantic, graceful and simple. Weddings are becoming smaller and more intimate and couples are spending more money on amazing food and photography than on securing the fanciest venue in town.

Any fashion tips/ideas for brides, styling or grooms?

Stay true to your personality but remember, hopefully, you only do this once so have some fun with being the bride and groom, wear your Mum’s veil and say yes to the velvet bow tie because when else will you get the chance!

Best tip for a bride-to-be?

My ultimate tip for any bride is look after yourself AND your man, exercise together as well as on your own, eat well and

splurge occasionally. It is a great way to relieve stress and create a great bond that is not just about the wedding. You will create great habits and memories that will follow you through into married life long after the wedding is over!

As you will remember, Dannika was the lucky winner of our Bride-to-be-Health-Transformation Competition with Snap Fitness Mackay and Mass Nutrition Mackay & Northern Beaches. We check in with her to see how her progress has been so far.

“Things are going well, I am 9.6kg down, which I am incredibly stoked about! The first 5kg took a while but now I have my routine set, I am pretty happy. I get married in August and am hoping to hit the 15kg mark by then! I have been doing classes at Snap Fitness Mackay, body attack is my favourite. It’s a cardio based class. On alternate days, when I’m not at Snap, I will do cardio and weights on my own. Mass Nutrition Mackay has been

excellent to deal with. Carissa always goes above and beyond to help! I am taking some vitamins, a pre workout before gym and then protein shake as my mid-morning snack throughout the day. I am using “Body Effects - Raspberry and Pomegranate favour”. It’s so yummy and refreshing. It just gives me that extra hit of energy! It also has a fat burning and metabolism boosting agent in it. I also enjoy “Proto Whey - Chocolate Protein Shake”, and snack on Choc Chip Quest bars.

So far everything is going well with the wedding, I’m pretty organised for now! I just have the little stuff to organise closer to the day! The countdown is on!”

isaac weddings toriHi Tori, there are definitely some areas that make our region stand out from the crowd. We have many beautiful beaches and the Eungella rainforest is stunning, but if you want a location that shouts Mackay, you can’t go past the sugar cane fields. They make a dramatic backdrop for photos, especially when they are in full flower. Your photographer will be able to help you in this, they know the best locations and are always scouting for new ones. Happy Planning, Isaac.

isaac weddings tessaWhy choose? Have both! Have both your father and stepfather walk you down the aisle together or one walk you half way and the other walk you the rest of the way. You can do the same with the father/daughter dance, dance half with one, then the other. If there is a good relationship between you all, discuss this with them both to make sure everyone is comfortable with the idea. But remember, it’s your day, your way!

lena isaac weddingsCan you tell me, are there any rules to getting married on beaches in Mackay? TIA Lena.

isaac weddings lenaThere are some legalities involved in marrying in a public park or beach in Mackay. Firstly you must apply to do so with the local council. Forms can be found on their website. This will ensure that you are not planning a wedding on the same day, same time, same place as any other party, which given how lovely our beaches and climate are is a distinct possibility! There may be a fee for your location as well, and again all information relating to this can be on the Mackay Regional Council website. Hope this helps you Lena, Isaac.

Where did you meet?

Todd: We met at Molloy’s. I saw her dancing.

Vanessa: We met at Molloy’s Irish Bar in Mackay. It was Anzac Day Eve 2008, Todd was 19 and I was 18.

Your first date?

Todd: Our first date happened a week after we met. I took her bowling and to the ‘finest restaurant in town’ McDonalds!

Vanessa: Our first date was bowling and dinner at McDonalds. Bowling was so much fun and was a great way to get to know each other. I actually beat Todd in the first round!

First kiss?

Todd: The first kiss. I can remember what movie we were watching and even what she was wearing.

Vanessa: Our first kiss was at Todd’s house, during the credits of The Cable Guy, on our second date.

The proposal?

Todd: The proposal went really well, I wasn’t nervous. I had the ring hidden for a few months while I planned the surprise trip.

Vanessa: The proposal. Todd did such a great job, he went to so much effort. It was a surprise trip to the Gold Coast, where we went on a hot air balloon ride. The hot air balloon ride was amazing, we then went to a winery and had breakfast. Following breakfast we went for a walk and by the stream Todd got down on one knee and proposed. I absolutely bawled my eyes out with happiness.

Wedding plans?

Todd: The wedding plans. Vanessa says they’re going well, so I guess they’re going well!

Vanessa: Our wedding plans are going really well, I’m loving looking at all of the pretty things. Organising and planning has been so much fun!!! Todd’s really good with ideas as well which is very helpful, he actually planned out where everything was going to be at our reception, like the chairs, DJ, drinks and cake. He is a very supportive and loving fiancé and we’re both so happy.

Where did you meet?Brendon: We met at Calvary Christian College when I changed schools and started grade 11 there. We were in the same year and we had a small year.

Amy: Brendon and I met in 2006 at school. We were only friends at that time and I thought he was pretty cute. I was too shy to make a move. He was one of my academic competitors and most of our conversations were around comparing grades. We kept in touch through Facebook, using our mutual interest in the law, as an excuse to talk to him.

Your first date?Brendon: We have been together since Valentine’s Day last year, from our first date.

Amy: We went on our first date in February 2013. On Valentine’s Day this year, Brendon took me to dinner to a restaurant on the beach.

The proposal?Brendon: I proposed to Amy on the beach on Valentine’s Day this year, after a meal out together at a beach side restaurant. Amy was looking out over the water commenting on how the moon hit the water, when she turned around I was down on one knee.

Amy: I had the pleasure of designing my engagement ring as his mum is in the jewellery business. During dinner, I asked him again if it was finished and if he’d seen any pictures of it. He told me that he hadn’t and that he’d ask his mum to take a picture of it the next day. Little did I know that the ring was actually in his pocket!

Wedding plans?Brendon: We are looking to get married at the Palmetum Gardens in Townsville, next year on July 11. We’ve already started getting the table settings together as Amy wants to do this herself. Amy has recently put a deposit on her dress and I will most likely leave the suits until the last minute ha ha! We have a general theme colour decided, however, Amy is a little indecisive when it comes to the bridesmaids dresses. We have already decided on our bridal party - best man and maid of honour and groomsman and bridesmaid.

Amy: We are getting married in July 2015. We’ve attended one wedding expo. We have booked the ceremony venue, the reception venue, and the photographer. I have my dress and we have tea lights, vases and glass bases for our centrepieces. We want to have as much as we can organised by the beginning of next year so that we can look forward to the wedding without all of the stress of planning everything.
