Properties of a Solution

Solution is a homogeneous mixture.

The particles of a solution are so small that they cannot be seen by naked eyes.

They do not scatter a beam of light passing through the solution. So, the path of light is not visible in a solution.

The solute particles cannot be separated from the mixture by the process of filtration.

Saturated and Unsaturated Solutions

At any particular temperature, a solution that has dissolved as much solute as it is capable of dissolving, is said to be a saturated solution.

If the amount of solute contained in a solution is less than the saturation level, it is called an unsaturated solution.

The amount of the solute present in the saturated solution at this temperature is called its solubility.

Concentration of a Solution

A solution contains 20 g of common salt in 250 g of water. Calculate the concentration in terms of mass by mass percentage of the solution.

Problem

Solution

Mass of solute (salt) = 20 gMass of solvent (water) = 250 gMass of solution = 20 g + 250 g = 270 g

Mass percentage of solution = Mass of solute/Mass of solution X 100 = 20/270 X 100 = 7.4 %

Concentration of a Solution

What is the concentration in percent mass/volume of 150 mL of solution containing 30 g of solute?

Problem

Solution

Mass of solute = 30 gVolume of solution = 150 mL

Mass/volume percentage of solution = Mass of solute/Volume of solution X 100 = 30/150 X 100 = 20 %
