Indian Standard

SPECIFICkTION FOR FINE GRADE PALLADIUM

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 5 May 1965, after the draft finalized by the Precious Metals Sectional Committee had been approved by the Structural and Metals Division Council. I 0.2 Palladium belongs to the platinum group of metals and is the lightest metal of this group. Palladium, in the form of ingot, is used for the purpose of alloying. Palladium, in the form of wire, is used for electrical contacts and large quantities are employed in relay for telephone service. It is also used for making dental and jewellery alloys. In the finely divided form, it is highly effective as hydrogen catalyst.

0.3 In preparing this standard, the Sectional Committee took into con- sideration the manufacturing and trade practices followed in the country in this field.

0.4 This standard is intended to provide a fundamental basis of transaction among all interests, but it is not intended to regulate the price structure and other details of the usual trade transactions.

0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express- ing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2 -1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard lays down the purity of fine grade palladium used in pure form as well as for making alloys.

2. PURITY

2.1 Fine grade palladium shall contain not less than 99.80 percent by ’ weight of palladium.

*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( r&sad ).

3. MARKING

3.1 The material shall be marked legibly with the percentage of palladium, grade, name, initials or trade-mark of the manufacturer.

3.1.1 The material may also be marked with the IS1 Certification Mark.

NOTE - The use of the IS1 Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the Indian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks ) Act, and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. Presence of this mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard, under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality control during production. This system, which is devised and supervised by IS1 and operated by the producer, has the further safeguard that the products as actually marketed are continuously checked by IS1 for conformity to the standard. Details of conditions, under which a licence for the use of the IS1 Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.

4. ASSAYING

4.1 Palladium content shall be determined in accordance with IS : 3088*.

*Methods for assaying of palladium ( under prapclration ),
