FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Geotextiles and Industrial Fabrics Sectional Committee had been approved by the TextileDivision Council.

In the preparation of this standard considerable assistance has been derived from IS0 10966 : 1994 ‘Textiles - Fabrics for awnings and camping tents - Specification’.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)‘. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

TEXTILES - FABRICS FOR AWNINGS AND CAMPING TENTS - SPECIFICATION

1 SCOPE

This standard specifies. important material charac- teristics for woven fabrics for awnings and camping tents. To meet the needs arising from different climatic conditions, different national habits in tent usage or different durability-expectations of the customer, the material requirements are split into two levels: A and B. Level A requirements apply to awnings and camping tent fabrics intended for severe and/or long term use; level B require- ments arc lower than level A and apply to fabrics intended for less severe use.

NOTE - As far as the division and subdivision in different tent-categories and types is concerned this standard follows the classification as given below:

a) Awnings

Residential awning - Type R Touring awning - SpeT Snow awning use - TypeSN

b) Camping tents -Sleeping tent (Type S); 1) Class 1 -Light weight tent 2) Class st -Standard weight tent -Touring tent (Type T) -Residential tent (Type R)

2 REFERENCES

2.1 The Indian Standards listed in Annex A are necessary adjuncts to this standard.

3 TERMINOLOGY

3.1 In addition to definitions given in IS 129911 IS0 7152 following definitions shall apply.

3.1.1 Inner Fabric

Fabric for awning and camping tents which is not directly exposed to weather during practical (that is protected by other fabric).

3.1.2 Outer Fabric

Fabric for awning and camping tents which is directly exposed to weather during practical use.

4 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND TEST METIIODS

4.1 The requirements of coated fabrics for roofs of awnings and camping tents Type R and Type T are given in Table 1.

4.2 The requirements of uncoated fabrics for roofs of awnings and camping tents Type R and Type T are given in Table 2.

4.3 The requirements of coated fabrics for walls/outer tents of awnings and camping tents are given in Table 3.

4.4 The requirements of uncoated fabrics for walls/outer tents of awnings and camping tents are given in Table 4.

4.5 The requirements for roofs and walls of awnings, Type SN are given in Table 5.

4.6 The requirements for coated outer fabrics of tents Type S, are given in Table 6.

4.7 The requirements for uncoated outer fabrics of camping tents, Type S, are given in Table 7.

4.8 Resistance Against Cold Crack

Cracks of grade A [see 9.1 of IS 7016 (Part lo)] are permitted in all coated fabrics when tested as per IS 7016 (Part 10). The test temperature shall be -2O’C for snow tent materials and -1O’C for materials of all other types.

4.9 Dimensional Stability

Dimensional change shall not be more than +-3 percent when tested in accordance with IS 2977 using a cycle of 2 h.

The quantity of fabric of one definite type delivered to a buyer against one despatch noteshallcon- stitute a lot.

NOTE! - The sampling plan given below shall give desired protection to the buyer and the seller provided the lot submitted for inspection is homogeneous. To ensure homogeneity of the lot, it is recommended that the manufacturers should follow the methods given in IS 397 (Part 1) and IS 397 (Part 2).

6.2 The conformity of the lot to the requirements of this standard shall be adjudged on the basis of the tests carried out on the samples selected from it.

6.3 Unless otherwise agreed to between the buyer and the seller, the number of rolls or pieces to be selected from a lot shall be in accordance with co1 1 and 2 of Table 9.
