In spite of high calf and feedcattle prices, high inputs costs re-lated to supplemental feedstuffs, fuel and fertilizer have many pro-ducers seeking ways to improvecow-calf production efficiency andprofitability. Profitability may beenhanced by increasing the volumeof production (i.e. the pounds ofcalves you market) and/or the
value of products you sell (improving quality). The reduction ofproduction costs, and thus breakeven prices, can also improveprofitability. Better yet, improving the input:output ratio shouldenhance profit. For commercial beef producers, the implementa-tion of technologies and breeding systems that increase the qual-ity and volume of production and reduce input costs is essentialto maintain or improve the competitive position of the operation.More and more producers are finding that a structured cross-breeding system helps them achieve the goals increasing pro-ductivity and reducing production costs.
Why crossbreed?
The use of crossbreeding offers two distinct and important ad-vantages over the use of a single breed. First, crossbred animalshave heterosis or hybrid vigor. Second, crossbred animals com-bine the strengths of the parent breeds. The term ‘breed comple-mentarity’ is often used to describe breed combinations thatproduce highly desirable progeny for a broad range of traits.
What is heterosis?
Heterosis refers to the superiority of the crossbred animal rel-ative to the average of its straight bred parents. Heterosis resultsfrom the increase in the heterozygosity of a crossbred animal’sgenetic makeup. Heterozygosity refers to a state where an animalhas two different forms of a gene. It is believed that heterosis isthe result of gene dominance and the recovery from accumulatedinbreeding depression of pure breeds. Heterosis is, therefore, de-pendant on an animal having two different copies of a gene. Thelevel of heterozygosity an animal has depends on the random in-heritance of copies of genes from its parents. In general, animalsthat are crosses of unrelated breeds, such asAngus and Brahman, exhibit higher levels of heterosis, due to more heterozygosity, than do crosses of more genetically similar breeds such as a crossof Angus and Hereford.
Heterosis generates the largest improvement in lowly heritabletraits. Moderate improvements due to heterosis are seen in mod-erately heritable traits. Little or no heterosis is observed in highlyheritable traits. Heritability is the proportion of the observablevariation in a trait between animals that is due to the genetics thatare passed between generations and the variation observed in theanimal’s phenotypes, which are the result of genetic and envi-ronmental effects. Traits such as reproduction and longevity havelow heritability. These traits respond very slowly to selectionsince a large portion of the variation observed in them is due toenvironmental factors and a small percentage is due to geneticdifferences. Heterosis generated through crossbreeding can sig-nificantly improve an animal’s performance for lowly heritabletraits. Crossbreeding has been shown to be an efficient method toimprove reproductive efficiency and productivity in beef cattle.
Improvements in cow-calf production due to heterosis are at-tributable to having both a crossbred cow and a crossbred calf. The two tables below detail the individual (crossbred calf) andmaternal (crossbred cow) heterosis observed for various impor-tant production traits. These heterosis estimates are adapted froma report by Cundiff and Gregory, 1999, and summarize cross-breeding experiments conducted in the South-eastern and Mid-west areas of the US.
Why is it so important to have crossbred cows?
The production of crossbred calves yields advantages in bothheterosis and the blending of desirable traits from two or morebreeds. However, the largest economic benefit of crossbreedingto commercial producers comes from having crossbred cows.Maternal heterosis improves both the environment a cow pro-vides for her calf as well as improves the longevity and durabil-ity of the cow. The improvement of the maternal environment acow provides for her calf is manifested in the improvements incalf survivability to weaning and increased weaning weight.Crossbred cows exhibit improvements in calving rate of nearly4% and an increase in longevity of more that one year due to het-erotic effects (table 2). Heterosis results in increases in lifetime

Consider Crossbreeding for
Bob Weaber, Ph.D.
productivity of approximately one calf and 600 pounds of calfweaning weight over the lifetime of the cow (table 2). Cross-breeding can have positive effects on a ranch’s bottom line by notonly increasing the quality and gross pay weight of calves pro-duced but also by increasing the durability and productivity ofthe cow factory. Crossbred cows maybe the only free lunch in theworld.
The effects of maternal heterosis on the economic measures ofcow-calf production have been shown to be very positive. Theadded value of maternal heterosis ranges from approximately$50/cow/year to nearly $100/cow/year depending on the amountof maternal heterosis retained in the cowherd (Ritchie, 1998). Ma-ternal heterosis accounted for an increase in net profit per cow ofnearly $75/cow/year (Davis et al., 1994). Their results suggestedthat the benefits of maternal heterosis on profit were primarilythe reduced cost per cow exposed. Crossbred cows had higher re-productive rates, longer productive lives, and required fewer re-placements than straightbred cows in their study. All of thesefactors contribute to reduced cost per cow exposed. Further, theyfound increased outputs, including growth and milk yield, wereoffset by increased costs.
How can I harness the power of breed complementarity?
Breed complementarity is the effect of combining breeds thathave different strengths. When considering crossbreeding fromthe standpoint of producing replacement females, one could se-lect breeds that have complementary maternal traits such that fe-males are most ideally matched to their production environment.Matings to produce calves for market should focus on comple-menting the traits of the cows and fine tuning calf performance(growth and carcass traits) to the market place.
There is an abundance of research that describes the core com-petencies (biological type) of many of today’s commonly usedbeef breeds. Traits are typically combined into groupings such as
maternal/reproduction, growth and carcass. When selecting ani-mals for a crossbreeding system, their breed should be your firstconsideration. What breeds you select for inclusion in your mat-ing program will be dependant on a number of factors includingthe current breed composition of your cow herd, your forage andproduction environment, your replacement female developmentsystem, and your calf marketing endpoint. All of these factorshelp determine the relative importance of traits for each produc-tion phase.
What are the keys to successful crossbreeding programs?
Many of the challenges that have been associated with cross-breeding systems in the past are the result of undisciplined im-plementation of the system. With that in mind, one should becautious to select a mating system that matches the amount oflabor and expertise available to appropriately implement the sys-tem. Crossbreeding systems range in complexity from very sim-ple programs such as the use of hybrid genetics, which are as easyas straight breeding, to elaborate rotational crossbreeding systemswith four or more breed inputs. The biggest keys to success arethe thoughtful construction of a plan and the sticking to it! Besure to set attainable goals. Discipline is essential.

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPD’S)The difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an
individual of average genetic merit. Reported in units of measurement for the trait (e.g. lb., cm, etc.). All published EPD’s in this catalog
were generated through the American Simmental Association and are subject to change.
Production EPD’s:
Calving Ease Direct (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers.
Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease.
Birth Weight EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s
offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving
ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW): WW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected
between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in
weaning weight that are due to milk. Yearling Weight EPD (YW): YW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the
progeny of animals at one year of age.
Docility EPD (DOC): Docility EPD’s predict the percentage of an animal’s offspring that are expected to score favorably (1 or 2) on a
five-point scoring system when compared to the offspring of another animal. Expressed in EPD’s as a percentage with higher values being
favorable.
Maternal EPD’s:
Maternal Calving Ease EPD (MCE): Predict the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared
to the daughters of another sire in the same evaluation. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births.
Maternal Milk EPD (MM): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. They reflect the average differences
in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Available feed resources will
dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected. Maternal Weaning Weight EPD (MWW): Total Maternal EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by an animal’s daughters. They
account for average differences that can be expected from both weaning weight direct as well as from milk, and measure a sire’s ability to
transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters.
Stayability EPD (STAY): Stayability is defined as the probability that a sire’s daughters entering the herd will stay in production through 6
years of age. The Stayability EPD provides an estimate of how long a sire’s daughters will stay in the herd compared to another sire in the
same evaluation. Higher values indicate greater stayability.
Carcass EPD’s:
Carcass Weight EPD (CW): CW EPD’s estimate average differences in carcass weight, expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint.
Yield Grade EPD (YG): Predict the average differences in cutability that can be expected between the progeny of animals at a given age
endpoint. As with all EPDs, YG is expressed as a deviation. Negative values are desirable. To use it, one must keep in mind that it is in yield
grade units. Therefore, lower is better. For example, a bull with a -.33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring that are 1/3 of yield grade
better (lower) than a zero bull. If zero bulls sired an average yield of 3.0 in a particular environment and management system, offspring of a -.33 bull would be expected to have an average yield grade of 2.67 (1/3 of a yield grade better/lower). (Simmental)
Marbling EPD (MAR OR IMF): Predict the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny when compared to the
progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in numerical marbling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score.
Backfat EPD (BF or FAT): Estimate the average differences that are expected in external fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib between
progeny of different animals. Expressed in inches at a given age endpoint.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE): Predict the average difference in ribeye area in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another
animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in square inches.
Shear Force EPD (SHR): Pounds of force required to shear a steak.
SIMMENTAL – API $ and TI $ EPD INDEXES:Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic
puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics
to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the
portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Consequently, maternal traits such as milk, stayability, and maternal calving ease are not considered in this index.
Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The
difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared
to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire,
you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra
$6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls
in the breed. See percentile ranking charts within this catalog, or visit www.simmental.org.

The Females that Sell:The American Simmental Association recently published a list of the top cows in the Breed for the API $ index. 11 of the top 100 cows in the Breed for API$ carry the IR prefix. Both the #1 Purebred Cow and the #1 SimAngus Cow for API$ are bred and owned by Irvine Ranch. The Cow/Calf pairs selling present an opportunity to purchase breed leading caliber genetics. All of the cows selling are homeraised, with 85 years of breeding behind them. There are no culls selling in this group; Only cows that we would be just as willing to retain in our herd. Our program is generating more quality replacement females than we have the ability to maintain in the herd, and we are proud to offer this group. Our ability to offer these quality females is the result of three principal factors: 1.) Use of quality, proven sires through Artificial Insemination for over 40 years. 2.) Disciplined culling – Heifers and cows that fail to meet our high standards are culled. 3.) Embryo Transfer; Our first use of ET was in 1987, with limited success until 2005. Beginning in 2005 we set a goal to produce 40-50% of the calf crop through embryo work. The result has been an improvement in both consistency and quality with every calf crop. The AI sired calves at side represent cutting edge genetics. As a group they rank near the top of the breed for the All Purpose Index. All cows are open and should be ready to start breeding anytime fit for your program. If you purchase a first calf heifer(s) remember they are still growing and manage them accordingly to insure they breed right back. A sale supplement sheet will be available to update calf information not available at the time of the catalog being published. This supplement will be available at the sale, and ahead of the sale at: www.irvineranchgenetics.com
