Glossary of Terms and Abbreviations

PERFORMANCE and GENERAL TERMSCalving Ease (CE): The opposite of difficult or abnormal calving. An easy calving is one that does not require assistance and does not

impose undue strain on the calf or dam.

Calving Score (CS): A measure of calving where: 1=unassisted birth; 2=hand assistance; 3=mechanical assistance.

Actual Birth Weight (ACT BW): A weight taken within 24 hours of birth.

Birth Weight Ratio (BW Ratio): An expression of the animal’s adjusted weight at birth relative to the contemporary group average.

Note: There is a difference in expression of BW Ratio between the Simmental and Angus Breed Associations. A Simmental with a below

average birth weight will have a ratio greater than 100 (ratios above 100 are more desirable). An Angus with a below average birth weight

will have a ratio less than 100 (ratios below 100 are more desirable).

Adjusted Weaning Weight (ADJ WW): An off-the-cow calf weight adjusted to 205 days of age and to a mature dam age equivalence.

Adjusted Weaning Weight Ratio (WW Ratio): An expression of the animal’s performance for adjusted weaning weight relative to the

contemporary group average. Ratios >100 are above average, Ratios <100 are below average.

Adjusted Yearling Weight (ADJ YW): A weight adjusted to 365-days of age.

Adjusted Yearling Weight Ratio (YW Ratio): An expression of the animal’s performance for adjusted yearling weight relative to the

contemporary group average. Ratios >100 are above average, Ratios <100 are below average.

N/C: No contemporaries.

Test Gain: The average daily gain of an animal for a fixed period of time.

Note: The sale bulls were gain tested for 86 days.

Test Gain Ratio: The individual bull’s gain performance relative to the contemporary group. A gain ratio above 100 reflects above group

average gain and below 100 reflects below group average gain. Note: For the purpose of the Test Gain Ratio, all sale bulls were considered to be in one contemporary group.

Adjusted Frame Score (ADJ Frame): Based upon hip height measured in inches and adjusted to a 365-day basis, using BIF standards.

Adjusted Scrotal Circumference (Adjusted Scrotal): A measurement of the distance in centimeters around the testicles in the scrotum

with a circular tape. Related to semen producing capacity and age at puberty of female sibs and progeny. Converted to a 365-day basis,

using BIF standards.

Homozygous Black: An animal that will always pass on a black gene to its progeny. Denoted in “COLOR” box as “BB”.

Heterozygous Black: Although the animal is black-hided (Black is Dominant to Red), it may pass on a red gene to its progeny. Denoted in

“COLOR” box as “Bb”.

Homozygous Polled: An animal that will always pass on a polled gene to its progeny. Denoted in “POLLED” box as “PP”.

Heterozygous Polled: Although the animal is polled (Polled is Dominant to Horns), it may pass on a horn gene to its progeny. Denoted in

“COLOR” box as “Pp”.

Note: Sale bulls that were not known to be homozygous black or homozygous polled by pedigree were DNA tested by Igenity.

Ultrasound % IMF Ratio: An ultrasound measurement of the percent intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle, relative to animals within the

same contemporary group.

Ultrasound RE Ratio: An ultrasound measurement of the area in square inches of the longissimus muscle between the 12th and 13th rib,

relative to animals within the same contemporary group.

Ultrasound BF Ratio: An ultrasound measurement of the fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib, relative to animals within the same

contemporary group.

Note: Calves born as a result of embryo transfer are evaluated in a separate contemporary group for ultrasound traits. ASA: American Simmental Association AAA: American Angus Association BIF: Beef Improvement Federation

Page 5: Irvine Ranch Annual Production Sale

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPD’S): All published EPD’s generated through the American

Simmental AssociationThe difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an

individual of average genetic merit. Reported in units of measurement for the trait (e.g. lb., cm, etc.).

Production EPD’s:

Calving Ease Direct (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers.

Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease.

Birth Weight EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving

ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW): WW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected

between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in

weaning weight that are due to milk.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW): YW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the

progeny of animals at one year of age.

Maternal EPD’s:

Maternal Calving Ease EPD (MCE): Predict the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared

to the daughters of another sire in the same evaluation. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births.

Maternal Milk EPD (MM): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. They reflect the average differences

in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Available feed resources will dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected.

Maternal Weaning Weight EPD (MWW): Total Maternal EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by an animal’s daughters. They

account for average differences that can be expected from both weaning weight direct as well as from milk, and measure a sire’s ability to

transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters.

Stayability EPD (STAY): Stayability is defined as the probability that a sire’s daughters entering the herd will stay in production through 6

years of age. The Stayability EPD provides an estimate of how long a sire’s daughters will stay in the herd compared to another sire in the

same evaluation. Higher values indicate greater stayability.

Carcass EPD’s:

Carcass Weight EPD (CW): CW EPD’s estimate average differences in carcass weight, expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint.

Yield Grade EPD (YG): Predict the average differences in cutability that can be expected between the progeny of animals at a given age

endpoint. As with all EPDs, YG is expressed as a deviation. Negative values are desirable. To use it, one must keep in mind that it is in yield grade units. Therefore, lower is better. For example, a bull with a -.33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring that are 1/3 of yield grade

better (lower) than a zero bull. If zero bulls sired an average yield of 3.0 in a particular environment and management system, offspring of a -

.33 bull would be expected to have an average yield grade of 2.67 (1/3 of a yield grade better/lower). (Simmental)

Marbling EPD (MAR OR IMF): Predict the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny when compared to the

progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in numerical marbling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score.

Backfat EPD (BF or FAT): Estimate the average differences that are expected in external fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib between

progeny of different animals. Expressed in inches at a given age endpoint.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE): Predict the average difference in ribeye area in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another

animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in square inches.

SIMMENTAL – API $ and TI $ EPD INDEXES:Though EPD’s allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPD’s and

economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine,

poultry, and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the $ indexes. The API and TI indexes calculate the estimated

differences between bulls in net dollars returned per cow exposed for two different herd scenarios as described below.

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the

portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Consequently,

maternal traits such as milk, stayability, and maternal calving ease are not considered in the index.

If you retain replacement heifers use the API index, if not, use TI.

Individual EPD’s are still relevant for making improvements in specific traits. The API$ and TI$ provide a valuable estimate of total genetic

merit.

Stout made, moderated framed M776 grandson. Packed with muscle and performance. Last year our Dual Focus sons were well received averaging $3900. Our first daughters of Dual Focus have started calving and appear to be great cows in the making.

High weaning weight bull of the non-ET calves. His dam, R898, weans a heavy calf every year while maintaining a regular calving interval. Her first 4 calves have averaged the following ratios: WW 122, YW 113, Scan Wt 110, IMF 107, BF 98, RE 107. X528 offers high growth, milk, marbling, and muscle. Recommended for use mature cows.

LOT 1 - IR TETON X497

Combining performance, phenotype and pedigree, IR Teton X497 is a one of a kind bull.Performance wise, his stats are on the edge of the bell curve in a contemporary group stacked for performance. He is physically impressive... moderate in stature with great muscle expression and structure. The three dams in his pedigree before T992 (H661,F563, B353) have had between 13-15 years of productive life in our herd. X497 weaned over 60% of T992's body weight, which has been typical for the cow family. This is a complete bull. We plan to collect him for in-herd sampling before sale day.

X535 is a big middled, easy fleshing bull you can't miss in the pen.Good performance and disposition, with high ranking EPD's and $ Indexes. With the Dual Focus X S942 mating, his biggest asset might be the daughters he leaves behind. We intend to collect him for in-herd sampling. Several Full and Half Brothers sell as Lots 13-20.

LOT 41 - PICK OF THE HERD FLUSH

Irvine Ranch views the ideal cow as a moderate sized, problem-free cow that calves on her own, produces a good calf every year, and does so for many years. Through the years, Irvine Ranch has focused herd building efforts on these types of cows. For the first time ever Irvine Ranch will offer an opportunity to tap the success of our disciplined program spanning 43 years of breeding Simmentals. The winning bidder is purchasing one embryo flush on an Irvine Ranch cow of Buyer's choice. Irvine Ranch will guarantee 7 viable embryos with no upside limit. It is fairly common for the cows listed below to flush > 10 embryos/flush.

A few notes: Flushing will be completed at Irvine Ranch by Cross Country Genetics. Irvine Ranch will pay all donor flushing and freezing fees. Buyer to provide semen of their choice for the mating, provided the semen meets necessary health and quality standards of our embryologist. Flushing will becompleted at the discretion of Irvine Ranch, no later than 12 months following the sale. The price established through the auction will be due to Irvine Ranch at the time of embryo delivery to the Buyer.Buyer will have 14 days following the sale to decide which cow to utilize.

Moderate framed PB Angus, out of picture perfect cow.

IR MS Retail Prod S933

Here's a nice Angus bull with good performance ratios and maternal strength. His dam has 8 natural calves with a 361 day calving interval. X509's granddam produced until 19 years of age in our program.

The Females that Sell:The Cow/Calf pairs selling are a group of home raised cows with 84 years of breeding behind them. There are no culls selling in this group; Only cows that we would bejust as willing to retain in our herd. Our program is generating more quality replacement females than we have the ability to maintain in the herd, and we are proud to offer this group. Our ability to offer thesequality females is the result of three principal factors: 1.) Use of quality, proven sires through Artificial Insemination for over 40 years. 2.) Disciplined culling – Heifers andcows that fail to meet a high standard are culled. 3.) Embryo Transfer; Our first use of ET was in 1987, with limited success until 2005. Beginning in 2005 we set a goal toproduce 40-50% of our calf crop through embryo work. The result has been an improvement in both consistency and quality with every calf crop. The AI sired calves at side represent cutting edge genetics. As a group they rank toward the top of the breed for the All Purp ose Index. All cows are open and should be ready to start breeding anytime fit for your program. If you purchase a first calf heifer(s) remember they are still growing and manage themaccordingly to insure they breed right back. A sale supplement sheet will be available to update calf information not available at the time of the catalog being published. This supplement will be available at the sale, and ahead of the sale at: www.irvineranchgenetics.com

Every year, in every herd, envi-ronmental factors (almost alwaysweather) affect the actual weight ofcattle. I don’t care when you recordthe weight; birth, weaning, as year-lings or later in life, the impacts oftemperature and related feed avail-ability have huge effects on weights. Can you believe there are still cattleproducers who use weight recordsversus EPDs and indexes to makeselection decisions? This past summer, Oklahoma,

Texas and several other statesexperienced an historic droughtand heat wave. I can guarantee theweights of cattle in these states aregreatly reduced. Birth weights ofcalves born in Texas and Oklahomathis fall will be much lighter than ifthey had cooler weather and morerainfall. In the South Central states, weaning weights of 2011 spring-borncalves will be greatly depressedunless the owners “pony-up” bigbucks for supplemental feed. We allknow, this terrible weather patterndoesn’t change an animal’s DNA orEPDs one iota.Neither does prudent or excep-

tional care. Anyone can creep feedor provide either practical or gener-ous nutrition to the cowherd, but itdoes not impact EPDs. I’ve heardsome bull buyers say, “I won’t buy abull unless he has a big weaningweight.” So, if you have made a res-olution to require some magic wean-ing weight of the young sires youpurchase, go ahead and enjoyspending dollars on a measurementthat potentially has no impact onyour genetic progress or enterpriseprofits. About all you’re doing is buy-ing bragging rights that your herd bullhad a big weaning weight. That bigweaning weight achieved by yourherd bull may be no reflection of hisgenetic makeup. Since we are near-ing the end of summer, the following

comments relate to genetic improve-ment and dealing with hot, dryweather.Thermal heat stress of cattle

caused by hot-humid weather or en-dophyte toxicity (such as fescue) orboth, have very large impacts on calfand cow body weights. Reduced for-age availability (Reduced? Someparts of the southern U.S. have hadno forage growth!) has two typicaloutcomes. Weaning weights are de-pressed and/or early weaning be-comes an effective managementdecision. From a seedstock produc-tion standpoint, neither of these im-pact the genetic worth and breedingpotential of the calf crop. There still remain cattle producers

who diligently search for “highperformers” even in the massivedrought of 2011. We salute everyonewho finds and selects seedstock thatadvances genetic merit, we regretthe wasted effort, time and moneyspent on the ineffective tunnel visionfocus on cattle weights. EPDs havelong since replaced weights, adjusted weights, and even weightratios as “best predictors” of geneticworth. The members of the American

Simmental Association know thefacts of measuring genetic values. Not until the weight data are enteredinto our genetic evaluations resultingin up-to-date EPDs, do we make de-cisions about true breeding values.Without doubt, there will be calvesweaned this fall with greatly reducedweights, yet their Weaning WeightEPDs will be superior to calves inother parts of this nation with muchheavier and more impressive data. The truth is, most cattle producers

already know these details. They donot become distracted with birth, weaning or yearling weights. Theyknow EPDs are their “protection in-surance” from purchasing cattle with

misleading weights. For example,an animal with a 75-pound birthweight, born in the fall after a long, hot summer might have considerablyless calving ease and birth weight, reducing genetic potential, than a100-pound calf born after a long, cold winter including significant cowherd hay and grain supplementation.Only EPDs provide a clear, envi-ronment-free measurement of thegenetic worth. For nearly three decades we have

explained the advantages of usingEPDs versus weights, adjustedweights and/or weight ratios to selectseedstock. Perhaps those whorefuse to embrace the science andtechnology of cattle genetics arestuck-in-time with old-fashionedideas; however, science “marcheson” and we have now entered intoan era of selecting by economicindexes.Simply by summing the market

worth of every EPD trait that eitherimpacts production cost or outputworth, we can estimate every ani-mal’s effect on cowherd enterprises.ASA’s All Purpose Index (API)

reflects the summation of every EPDon potential costs and productionvalues. All the way from calvingease, cowherd feed intake and cowlongevity, to Choice, Yield Grade 3 orbetter carcasses, API provides adollar value on every animal. Aver-age Simmental are $105 for API.Top-value Simmental exceed $140,so buy carefully.

So, You Bull Buyers Still Look at Actual Weights?By Dr. Jerry Lipsey,Executive Vice President, American Simmental Association
