Verbs

A verb in the future tense tells what is going to happen. To form the future tense of a main verb, use the helping verb will.

The verb tense indicates when the action happens.

• Present Tense: is happening now or happens regularly

• Present Progressive Tense: is happening now and continuing for a period of time

Choose the Right Verb Tense

Verbs

It is important to stay with the same verb tense unless there is a good reason to change tenses.

Incorrect Trevor collects leaves. He will keep them in a container. Correct Trevor collects leaves. He keeps them in a container.

Identify and Write in the Active and Passive Voices

Verbs

Verbs may be in the active or passive voice.

• A verb is in the active voice if the subject does the action.

The mayor delivers a speech. The mayor’s assistant wrote the speech.

• A verb is in the passive voice if the subject does not do the action. A verb in the passive voice uses a form of the verb to be (am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been).

The speech is delivered by the mayor. The speech was written by the mayor’s assistant.

Use the Active Voice

Verbs

Verbs may be in the active or passive voice. Using the active voice in your writing makes it more interesting.

• A verb is in the active voice if the subject does the action.

Joyce pulls the weeds in the yard. Adam threw a football.

• A verb is in the passive voice if the subject does not do the action. A verb in the passive voice uses a form of the verb to be (am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been).

The weeds in the yard are pulled by Joyce. A football was thrown by Adam.

Use Subject-Verb Agreement

Verbs

A subject and a verb must agree in number. A singular subject requires a singular verb, and a plural subject requires a plural verb.

Use Subject-Verb Agreement

Verbs

A verb must agree in number with its subject.

• A subject with two parts joined by and is called a compound subject. A compound subject with and takes a plural verb.

Adisa and Marco jog after school.

• When the verb consists of a main verb and a helping verb, the helping verb must agree in number with the subject.

Adisa is jogging on the track. Adisa and Marco are jogging for an hour.
