The purpose of this trip was originally to support the “Facing History” course of study. It was also intended to be a cultural exchange --to allow students from each school to experience something that they might never be able to otherwise. The group went in late September and came back in early October. According to Mr. Schwartz, Freshman English teacher at Iroquois, “Our students all stayed with a student from ‘Gymnasium am Rommerkastel,’ the German high school with which we were paired. We went to classes with our hosts, and our students made presentations to various German classes. Topics ranged from American pop culture, to the Derby, to Kentucky history, and American food. We did a lot of organized sight -seeing, saw castles and many vineyards. We experienced much of German history, and some host parents even took some of students to other cities such as Berlin, or even across country borders into France.” In addition to learning about the county in the schools, the group was able to see many of the geographic and historic landmarks of the area. “We sailed down the Rhine River to the Rheinsfel Castle ruins. We saw Heidelburg, an old city that was largely spared during World War 2. We saw an early era concentration camp in Osthofen. We spent time in the school's town of Alzey, and the bigger city of Mainz a short train ride away,” said Mr. Schwartz. Iroquois student Shailia Smith took note of her surroundings as well. “I liked their fields... they were beautiful. We also were brought on this boat cruise and we went to tour a castle! It was amazing! We were brought into the dungeon where they kept the bad people and the animals. We also visited the first concentration camp and that was pretty interesting,” Smith said. “We also went to this museum and learned how to work a printing press and we made posters. We went on this barefoot walk that was like a mile or something, and it was supposed to make your feet feel soft afterwards. It was really fun.” In order to be apart of this incredible experience, students were interviewed and were asked to explain why they deserved to go, what they could gain from the trip, and how well they could represent Iroquois. Students were then selected from this group of candidates. If we continue with the program, German students will visit us next fall, and we will send a group the year after. If the Germans are able to visit with us next fall, we would be in need of students and faculty willing to host a German student for 2-3 weeks. Please contact Mr. Schwartz in room 207 if you are interested.

Six Iroquois Students spend 3 weeks in Germany

! IT’S “IN THE BAG”: DIFFERENT PURSES IN OUR SCHOOL AND WORLD ZEYTUN ADEN

Are you the type of person who wouldn’t wear a purse? Well if you are, it’s time for a change because no female’s outfit is complete without a purse. Handbags today, are a crucial part of a woman’s style. They are offered in different forms, patterns, sizes and hues to shape unique purses. If you haven’t caught on to the trend -- it’s a time to try one out. ! Many IHS students alternate their purses, using them for style as well as purpose. Senior Doris Biriginimana alternates between bags,

backpacks and purses. She uses them to carry school books, pens, folders and also her personal items. To her bags are a natural to carry. In addition to being a necessity, she says that it is a part of fashion.

One way to show your fashion sense is to find a purse that is unique to you, such as carrying a vintage bag. Junior Jazzlyn Shaw carries a bag that she has had since last summer. She said, “I like it because of the chains and because it’s black.” It is also special to her because her mother carried it before she did. ! Purses are not that heavy, it just depends on what you put in them. Early modern Europeans wore purses for one purpose, to carry coins, but it seems that people today use them in much different ways. Today the accessory is used to holds items beyond currency, such as cosmetics, keys, a hairbrush, phones, and in some cases, even school books. ! If you don’t own a purse, your aren’t alone, but you may want to try one out and see if it helps you stay organized. Additionally, they can make a statement and add some style to your uniform.

If so, we want you on the newspaper staff ! Write a letter explaining why you want to be on the newspaper staff. In the letter, be sure to include your name, grade, and what type of stories you would like to write. Turn in this letter, along with two writing samples that display your writing style, to the front office at the attention of Mrs. Worthington. Next trimester’s schedule is being put together now, so make sure you have your application in by February 5! We are excited to have motivated & dedicated writers on our staff !

Do you love to write? Do you have a lot of opinions? Do you always know what’s going on around school?

IROQUOIS HOPES TO INCREASE SCORES ON ACT ! CARLOS J. FELICO Iroquois High School is working hard to increase our scores on this very important test. Our school is having a lot of practice for the next ACT. All the students that belong to IHS have to be

ready to take the ACT. We are developing those skills in our classes and some students are preparing after school. Teachers and principals are talking about the test and the preparation that we need. I had an interview with Miss Cummings, ESL teacher at Iroquois.

! She said that to help students prepare for the ACT, “There are two ESS ACT classes, one on Monday, and one on Wednesday. Also teachers are trying to include ACT material in the classrooms for student’s practice. Most teachers want to see students take this test seriously.”

She said that while it is possible for students to get a good grade, it will not come easily. “Students need to work and take this seriously. They can prepare using ACT books, ACT.org and working hard in all of their classes -- especially Math and English.”

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT • The next ACT is Feb. 11. The deadline to

register has passed, and a late fee is now being applied.

• The "school" ACT is March 6. It will be at Iroquois High School in the gym. It's for juniors only.

• April 14 is also an ACT testing day. It is offered off site (not at Iroquois).  Deadline to register is March 9.

• June 9 is an ACT testing day. It is offered off site. Deadline to register is May 4.

• The ACT costs $34.00. Students on free or reduced lunch can get two fee waivers per school year (in other words, they can take two ACT tests for free each year).

• The late fee is $21.00. The fee waiver does not cover the late fee, but it will still cover the cost of the test.  So if a student were to register late, hadn't exhausted their two ACT waivers, that student would pay $21.00 to take the test.

• Students who test off site need to provide their own transportation.

• If a student tests off site, s/he needs to bring a photo ID, an admissions ticket, pencils and a calculator.  A student will not be allowed to test without an ID or admissions ticket! A school ID can be used. The admissions ticket is available on their ACT account created when they registered.

•Students need to arrive at the testing center EARLY. The test begins at 8 a.m.; be there by 7:30 a.m.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING:  When a student creates his/her ACT account to register, that student needs to write down his/her username and password.  Students need this information to check their scores and register. The student agenda would be a great place to log this info.

Graduation is quickly approaching, and there are a lot of seniors and juniors that are looking for a good college to attend after they graduate. As we start making our decisions about what college attend, its important to look all the universities have to offer. There are many considerations including location, tuition, cost, credit hours, admissions, acts / GPA, housing, parking, hot spots, where to eat, libraries, campus life, demographics, degrees offered. One University that is getting a lot of recognition at school is Western Kentucky University.

WKU offers a lot of majors such as Journalism, Broadcasting, Education, Engineering and Business. It has been the fastest growing university in Kentucky for 13 years straight. Mr. Bacon, Freshman Social Studies teacher at Iroquois, is a Western Kentucky University graduate. He initially went to WKU to study photojournalism, but eventually changed his major and graduated with a double major. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Education.

Another thing to consider in choosing a university, is the variety and amount of clubs that a college

has to offer. Western Kentucky has intramurals (non-organized sports groups) and clubs for almost every interest including Student Government, over 20 social sororities and fraternities, philanthropic & community service groups, religious clubs and clubs relating to every major including an engineering club, photojournalism (photography) club and a student run advertising agency. In addition to his academic career, Mr. Bacon was also apart of Western Kentucky’s boxing club, and attended football and basketball games with friends. “I scheduled my classes from 9-12,” which allowed him to have the rest of his

day to study or have fun.

Mrs. Worthington is also a graduate of Western Kentucky. She graduated with a degree in Marketing and Advertising. “When

I was at Western I worked for the College Heights Herald, WKU’s nationally recognized newspaper. Working for a recognized organization helped me to get my first job. It is important to start building that resume early on. Grades are important and so is your involvement on campus.”

Mr. Bacon told me that their campus is really great. The campus has lots of parks and greenery. Additionally, all the dorms have been recently renovated and are well maintained.

Once I become a senior I’m going to be seriously considering what colleges have to offer, but being a Hilltopper is already a “top” pick.

THE GREAT DEBATE: DRESS CODE

UNIFORMS: NOT CUTE, BUT YOU CAN MAKE THEM LOOK GOOD XIOMARA RIVERAI’m pretty sure everyone hates dress code, but there are still ways to make it look good. Instead of looking like everyone else, you can do a lot of things to look different.

With jewelry, you can make any outfit look good. You can wear

different colored jewelry, and you can even make it match with a certain thing. For example, you can

wear a pink necklace and pink earrings that can match with your pink shoes. Hello kitty is something I see A LOT in Iroquois. I see people wearing hello kitty earrings, hello kitty necklaces, & hello kitty rings. The hello kitty accessories

make their outfit look good. For dudes, they can wear rosaries. There’s different kinds and different colored ones so they can also match boys shoes and outfits. I know a lot of guys don’t like tucking in their shirts, but having your shirt tucked in actually makes you look smart, shows you care about your appearance, and it makes your body look good.

Shoes can also make any outfit look good. You can wear a different pair every day. I see students wearing Jordans, converse, Sperrys, and a shoes with colors. Your shoes can match with your jewelry to make your outfit look better. So quit complaining about what you have to wear, and “work the uniform,” to make it work for you.

When you first think about dress code you think it has nothing to do with learning. I hear students talking all the time about how

“lame” the dress code is, and every day students are sent to the office for refusing to follow it. Many learning environments have changed dress code because it really does have an effect on learning. As the saying goes “The clothes make the man...” Even though dress code

throws some people off and makes them uncomfortable, it does have its benefits.

! For example, dress code puts poor and ‘well-off ’ students on the same foot and less bullying is involved. Students that worry about “looking good” coming to school usually aren’t as focused on their education as the social aspect. And in many ways, they aren’t being safe enough either.

! Some students don’t understand that uniform goes along with safety. Pulling up ones pants or

tucking in their shirts will provide no space for guns or drug paraphernalia. A school that allows students to wear inappropriate clothing is setting low expectations.

# Attendance increases when students aren’t worrying about what they’re going to wear. School attendance is directly related to doing well in school. You have to be there and in class in order to actually learn something. Worrying about clothes while in school could negatively affect students because they can become a distraction at school.

DRESS CODE DRAMA! ! ! ! ! ! ! DIAMOND KINDEL

! Students are always talking about the dress code at Iroquois. Two students, Diamond Kindel and Xiomara Rivera

sound off about their thoughts on the issue.

GETTING THE TAKE-DOWN ON WRESTLING! ! ABDULAHI KASSIM

Iroquois wrestling team does folkstyle wrestling. The whole point of folkstyle wrestling is to pin your opponent. You want to get as many points as possible. Folk style scoring mainly focuses on change in control. Taking an opponent down to the mat,

escaping from or reversing control, or turning an opponent's back to the mat are all scoring situation.

There is a lot more to it than what you might imagine. Turning an opponent’s back to the mat for three seconds scores two points. Holding him for five seconds will earn you three points. In a takedown, once you gain control of your opponent’s hips and they have three points of balance (arms and legs) on the mat, you earn two points. If you can reverse the position so that you have control of the opponent’s hips, you earn two points. If you and the opponent simply get away so that you are both standing with no one in control, it is called

an escape and you each earn one point. I interviewed Emrakh Askarov, who is on the wrestling team, to understand more of the type of wrestling they do. While it may seem like a sport where anything goes, there are many restrictions as well.

According to Emrakah, “You cannot do a five-point slammer which is basically raising your opponent and slamming him on his neck. Also when you pick up someone, your knee has to go down first on the mat and before your opponent falls”.

! When asked if athletes tag-team like in professional wrestling, Emrahk said, “No,it’s individual. But sometimes, you can get a point for the team but still fight as an individual”.

Matches are six minutes long, which are divided into three periods- two minutes each. One wrestler can wrestle in five matches a day. This may seem short, but it is pretty intense. “You have to wear wrestling tights and a headgear and wrestling shoes for grip.”

! Most people in Iroquois High School may know Ms. Pulley as the band director. As you may know she is just more than the band director. Ms. Pulley is also the guitar teacher at I.H.S. Ms. Pulley is one of the hardest working teachers in the building. From having a band class of sixty students is hard to manage alone. But Ms. Pulley is one of those teachers who can handle it very well.

! Everyone in school knows how the band puts so much dedication in what they do, that is all thanks to Ms. Pulley being there. It helps them to accomplish even more. Last school year, the music department won a Grammy (and a big check). With Ms. Pulley being the head of the music department I see why we accomplish so much.

! Ms. Pulley is always here after school to help her students get or become better in their weaker areas. She will not let you jeopardize your education just because you can’t follow some simple rules. Ms. Pulley works extra hard at her job because of her big classes. After school she goes and teaches middle or elementary students. She also does her best to help out as much during school.

! Having Ms. Pulley as a teacher is awesome. She is like one of your best friends, but don’t get on her bad side. Ms. Pulley values education and if you come to her class and don’t want to do anything, just get out. One of Ms. Pulley’s quotes I like is “Get with it, or get out.” I like this quote because she wants you to learn, but don’t come in to her class expecting to get an easy grade. Your grade in Ms. Pulley’s class is based on what you do and how you do it.

! I am in her guitar 2 class (which is her advance guitar class). Ms. Pulley doesn’t just teach guitar but she can also play guitar. When you don’t get something Ms. Pulley does not just show you but also plays it for you. One time she even played with us on the guitar (awesome). Ms. Pulley’s class is one of the best times I ever had at Iroquois. Guitar may not be on the ACT, but it’s definitely something that I will always take with me when I graduate ! ! from Iroquois.

MY LIFE AS AN EXCHANGE STUDENT! ! ! ! ! JOLANDA VAN DER VEEN

First I will introduce myself. My name is Jolanda van der Veen, I am 17 years old, and I am from the Netherlands. While in America, I would like to tell you about my experiences here

and the differences from my home, Holland.

First, some background about me: I always wanted to visit to America, and if I was ever able to, I wanted to have “the high school experience.” I talked about it with my family and they said, “If you give us the information we will see”. I went on the internet to search for information about organizations. I found an organization that could make it happen. I called them to ask if it was possible and it was. That’s how it all started. I sent them all the information that they needed, and then I just had to wait.

I had to wait a long time to get the information about what city and school I would be placed and also about the family that I would live with during my stay here. I am staying here for 5 months, but the program had an option to stay here for a year but for me that was too long to be away from my family.

When I finally got the information, I had only 2 weeks left in Holland before traveling here. I had to quit my job and I had to say “good-bye” to friends and family.

On December the 29th, my adventure began. That day, I was coming to America. I didn’t know what to expect. All I knew of Louisville was what I had seen on the internet. The flight from the Netherlands to America is 9 hours. (Amsterdam to Washington D.C.) I missed my connection from D.C. to Louisville, and as a result, I arrived here at midnight instead of the 7pm estimated arrival time. I felt horrible. I was tired, wanted to go to sleep, and never ever get back on that stupid airplane.

I had to search for my suitcase, because it came with the flight that went directly to Louisville. I finally found it stuck in an office which was locked. I

thought, “Can it be worse?” Well yes: I had to wait 20/30 minutes for a guy who could open the office before getting my bags and meeting my host family.

They greeted me at the airport and they took me to my new home. On the ride there, I took

everything in. My first impressions were that EVERYTHING is bigger here: homes, grocery stores, schools -- everything. The streets had bigger cars with lots more traffic, and to my surprise, no bicycles. This made me curious as to what other differences I would notice as I began my experience in the USA. I was excited to start my American adventure, but almost equally excited about going to bed after my journey!

The Hunger Games, it’s an outstanding action meets romance book that took me by surprise. It has a remarkable storyline that will want you wanting more. The Hunger game is the first in the series, written by Suzanne Collins. Her book reached New York Times best sellers for about 60 weeks. The series starts off with the hunger games, catching fire, and finally mocking jay. So this shall be my review on the first in the series.

! The Hunger Games starts off as a normal girl named Katniss, who faces many challenges such as starvation. So her top priority was to feed her family by illegally hunting for food and material to trade in. she would go hunting with her friend gale almost daily so that they can both provide for their families. But it doesn’t take long for that to change as the games are coming, the “hunger games”

! The Hunger Games, 12 districts and from each two are chosen. One girl and one boy as tributes. To fight to the death and bring glory to their district. At a ceremony, During the choosing for tributes, not knowing who will be the chosen, people wait in

suspense. As the name is drawn, katniss sister is announced. To the sound of her name she quickly volunteers herself. So she became a tribute. Then Peeta, a boy who she barley knows is chosen and is to compete with her.

! With all the competitors from all 12 districts are chosen, they are taken to the capitol where they are trained and prepare for the games. Peeta and katniss begin to communicate and soon became friends, but there was a sense of betrayal she felt so she couldn’t get to close to him. But a twist in her thinking changed after he confessed his love for her at an interview. This changed her view on how she saw the competition with him.

! Knowing his true feeling for her messed with her because she didn’t know if it was true or not. But soon enough the games had begun, they are put into the arena to fight. That’s where the action begins as the tributes are released to fight one another. Day by day is a fight for survival, for food, shelter and not being hunted down. As the games take progress betrayal, romance, and death take effect. In the

arena who know what could happen, there’s many twist that will keep you reading.

! The book is great and had me anxious to read more. it has a lot to offer in the book and acceded my expectations for it. It’s the first in the series and it’s a great way to start it off. I recommend this book to anybody who loves to read an outstanding action, romance; suspenseful… you get what I’m saying it’s a great book. Go pick it up and see for yourself.

! The sunflower is an emotionally touching novel about a Jewish man ‘Simon Wiesenthal’ who tells about his experience in a concentration camp during the brutal and harsh times of the ‘final solution’; the extermination of Jewish people.

! In 1943, Limburg, Austria a Concentration Camp prisoner Simon Wiesenthal is summoned to the bedside of a dying Nazi. This SS man, after confessing to a horrific crime against Jews, seeks Wiesenthal's, "a Jew's," forgiveness. Wiesenthal, deeply troubled by the request, turns the forgiveness request back to his fellow victims, and, ultimately, to the reader.

! For Wiesenthal, the encounter was unexpected and unnerving. Taken from the Limburg Concentration Camp in a workers’ group to the town’s army hospital in 1943, Wiesenthal was suddenly summoned, as a singled-out

Jew, to the bedside of a mortally wounded SS man, ‘Karl Seidl’. The man seized Wiesenthal’s hand and confessed to helping destroy, by fire and armaments, a house filled with more than 150 Jews. When Karl Seidl finished his story, he begged the Jewish forced-laborer to forgive him. Wiesenthal, however, rose and walked out. During the next two years, Wiesenthal shared this story with fellow camp mates, ending each time with: “Was my silence at the bedside of the dying Nazi right or wrong?” The incident and question so troubled Wiesenthal that, in 1946, he visited Karl Seidl’s mother in Stuttgart but left without telling the bereaved woman about her son’s misdeeds.

! This book has an Important theme that I deeply respect, the theme of ‘sunflower’ is ‘can someone fund it possible to forgive the wrong? Is it in one man’s hand to speak for a group of people to forgive a person for their

wrong doings?’ the theme had a real big effect on me because I had to make a decision to forgive my father or not for the wrong he had done to my brother and I. Was it my place to forgive him on my brothers behalf as well as on mine?

Title: A Child Called ItAuthor: Dave PelzerGenre: MemoirLength: 184 pages                 A Child Called It is a very touching book about the life of an abused and neglected individual who overcomes difficult circumstances and is able to have a fulfilling life.  The book is by Dave Pelzer who writes a story about his childhood. NEW YEAR: NEW GOALS ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! NIKKI BRUMETTWhen January arrives people tend to say

“New Year, new me.” What they mean is that they’re going to change something about themselves. It’s also called a New Year’s Resolution. It could be making better grades, getting closer to friends, applying to colleges, joining a club, or a gym -- anything you feel that you need to or want to change. So I went around Iroquois to see what people’s resolution were.

Junior, Candi Ferrell said her new year’s resolution is to, “go to the national guard.” She plans on accomplishing this by, “doing a lot of exercising before my seventeen birthday, because that’s when I’m going to apply.” She is going to stick to it by “getting a gym membership. I’m more motivated to go if I spend money on it,” she said. “It’s my new year’s resolution because it pays for my college 100% and it has good benefits. It’s an excellence reference for my college résumé.”

My resolution is to get better attendance. I’ve already gone to court over truancy and it’s not a joke. I plan to accomplish it by getting up every morning and going to school even when I don’t want too. I’m going to stick to it by making deals with my mom, like if I miss a day for no reason she can punish me. Something to get me motivated, even though truancy is still on my case. I chose this as my new year’s resolution because missing school makes me fall behind in my classes. I feel like if I start doing it I will feel better about myself.

Whether you made your resolution on January 1st, or you are setting new goals for yourself on a daily basis, it is important to have specific expectations for yourself so that you are always working to become better. Its also important to have friends, family, teachers or someone to help keep you accountable. Its also good to set deadlines for yourself for all goals, that way you don’t put it aside.

“IMPACT” MAKES AND IMPACT !! ! ! ! ! COURTNEY DO’ANE

“For the strength of the pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the pack.” - Rudyard Kipling

! This is the quote used around Iroquois to

represent IMPACT. An advocacy class assigned to 50 lucky juniors who are believed to be successful in their life. With over 200 juniors in the building, staff had to put a lot of thought into who they thought would be the best candidates to be chosen to help change the school. Who would have the most positive and affective IMPACT on Iroquois High School.

A group of selective teachers and staff members who have decided to be a major part of this new program, come together every Wednesday and help these 50 students with things they think will help them be the most successful they can be. Looking at ACT scores, Explore and PLAN scores give the students feedback they need so they can know what to get done and what they need to work harder on for the upcoming ACT test that is March 6.

Exciting as it is knowing that people are really determined to do well in life, IMPACT can be a lot of work. Oh no, not hard work as in essays and long drawn out projects, but hard work as in determination and motivation. Yea, to be successful…you need to be determined and

motivated. You need to know what you want so you can do anything and everything that you need to do to get to where you should be at. If you don’t really want something, you are not going to try as hard as you should or as hard as you even could.

IMPACT focuses on any post secondary school or training past high school. Iroquois wants its students to be ready for anything and everything outside of this building. Weather it is a large University, where studies are done to be a doctor or if it is just a smaller school to learn to cut hair, everyone should know that leaving Iroquois after being in such a preparing program such as IMPACT that you are ready for anything!

We have an exciting project that we are beginning to work on daily. We will begin roughing in our own classroom bathroom in the CTE wing for the Plumbing Shop. This will be our first big project that we have done for the past few years now in the class room. Our teacher, Mr. Purcell, says that this will cut down on the hall passes that he signs for students. The Seniors will have a big part in this project because, well, lets face it, they have the most experience. Allison Brinegar, Ashley Hagan, Lafayette Jackson, Karlos Porter, and Liam O’Connell will be the seniors leading the charge on this project. This will help further the students knowledge in the trade with regards to professional standards regarding installations required by the Department of Housing, Building and Construction Code Enforcement.

PLUMBERS ON THE MOVE ! ! ! ! ! ! ALLISON BRINEGAR

YOUR OPINION MATTERS CANDI FERRELL

Many students here at Iroquois don’t know about our Principles

Advisory Board, others don’t even know we have one. For those of you who don’t know, we are a group of students that have been selected to represent YOU and your opinions on how to make this high school experience better for us.

“In a sense it serves as something like a student council, a liaison of information from the students to me and me to the students,” Mr. Perkins says. “Every kid that comes here may assume that it doesn’t matter what they think, so this gives them a chance to have a voice and an impact on what they think is important.”

! In our meetings we discuss how to make our school community a better place, leadership, how to improve test scores, how to better our reputation in the public eye, and how can we get students to take pride in the school they go to. The whole purpose is to make our school ideal, make it to where every student can get the best education and tools they need for life after high school.

“My job is to make sure each and every student gets the best education in the best way. To

hear opinions from the students help me stay tuned in on how I can do just that,” says Mr. Perkins.

! Obviously, the effort is there, all that’s missing is cooperation. But how can you cooperate when you don’t know who to talk to? There are representatives in each class who are here to communicate what YOU think and feel is important.
