FROM THE IRHACE PRESIDENT

Dear IRHACE Member

I hope this finds you well.

Looking back at my first year as President there has been a lot happening. Time really does fly. It has been

an eventful year for the Institute. As this piece is being written, it’s worthwhile doing a quick review of

what the most important issue facing the industry is? I believe this is one of training culture.

Our industry has to face the fact that many individual practitioners do not regularly engage in upskilling,

or continuing professional development. I have spent the last few years working as a part time trainer for

RLNZ. It has been a very satisfying, and also frustrating experience. Satisfying because there are people in

the industry who believe they can learn, even in areas that they have not done since their apprenticeship;

frustrating because there are people who believe that they do not need to keep learning as they progress

through their careers.

The fact that flammable refrigerants are coming into the country, and technology is always being updated

means that regular upskilling will become critical in the next few years. A four year apprenticeship will

see you right for a period of time. However it will not be enough to have just this without any ongoing

training throughout your time in the industry.

President 2015-2017

FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Dear IRHACE Member

2015 has been busy, with the many events being held around the country throughout the year. This has

included technical tours, trade nights, social events such as golf days, seminars on flammable refrigerants, and

health and safety to mention a few.

The Institute has also worked with key government agencies, and other kindred bodies throughout the year.

This has included the Ministry for the Environment, Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment, as well

as Competenz on industry training, IPENZ, AIRAH, and of course CCCA and RLNZ.

A highlight for me was working with members and the industry to bring the Annual HVAC&R Conference and

Trade Expo to Christchurch. The event was a great success, and enjoyed by all who attended it.

The end of year financials on the Institute are provided with this document. There is valuable information in

these documents, so I urge you to read these.

An annual review has been accepted by members, rather than a full audit provided by the auditors.

HVAC&R Trade Exhibition and Industry Conference Christchurch 2015

The Annual Trade Exhibition and Industry Conference in Christchurch was well attended. There were 71

stands, with 56 exhibitors at the trade expo. Exhibitors showcased a diverse range of products and

services to the industry.

Presentations and speakers were divided into two streams for attendees. These were either focused on

technical subjects, or a business theme.

Key highlights from the technical stream were Brian Rees from McAlpine Hussman speaking on proposed

changes to AS/NZS1667, as well as a keynote presentation from Jacinda Ardern, Labour List MP, on small

businesses.

Speakers in the business stream included experts Jason Ennor from MyHR, and James McQueen of BDO

on the financial health of businesses.

There were also great presentations on the new artesian heating and cooling system at Christchurch

International Airport. This was followed up with a technical tour of the airport, and tour of the city,

organized through the local Canterbury/Westland IRHACE branch.

Everyone enjoyed the social side of the conference, with events such as a Mexican Fiesta, IRHACE Council

and Branch Chair dinner, and the formal dinner and awards evening.
