What is IR Spectrometry?Infrared spectroscopy (IR spectroscopy) is thespectroscopy that deals with the infrared region ofthe electromagnetic spectrum, that is light with alonger wavelength and lower frequency than visiblelight.

    * Rapid and mobile determination of alcoholic strengthusing a flow-through infrared sensor

*Ever since Gay-Lussac's time, the alcoholicstrength by volume (% vol) has beendetermined by using densimetricmeasurements.

*At present, infrared (IR) spectroscopy incombination with multivariate regression iswidely applied as a screening procedure, which allows one to determine alcoholic

strength in less than 2 min without any samplepreparation.

Alcoquick 4000The device uses a patented, spectroscopic multiple-beam measuring procedure, which is based on specialwavelengths in the infrared spectrum. Sample, waste, and water hoses are connected to the device andpositioned in the appropriate receptacles. When thedevice is switched on, the system first conducts areference measurement with water. Next, the samplemeasurement is started by using the device's touch-screen display. The device samples approximately 40ml of alcoholic beverage and displays the alcoholicstrength in less than 60 s. After that, the next samplecan be directly measured. Following each measuringseries, a cleansing cycle removes dirt and sampleresidue from the measuring head. For this, cleaningfluid is used in the sample position and a cleansingcycle is initiated by the software.

*During method validation, the precision of the infrared sensor wasfound to be equal to or better than densimetric or FTIR methods. For example, the average repeatability, as determined in 6different wine samples, was 0.05% vol and the relative standard

deviation was below 0.2%. Accuracy was ensured by analyzing 260different alcoholic beverages in comparison to densimetric or FTIRresults. The correlation was linear over the entire range fromalcohol-free beers up to high-proof spirits, and the results were insubstantial agreement (R = 0.99981, p < 0.0001, RMSE = 0.279%

    vol).
