Reflective Statement for IPTS 7 Brittany Granquist
Artifact: Personal letter home
PTS 4. Communication: The competent teacher uses knowledge of effective
written, verbal, nonverbal, and visual communication techniques to fosteractive inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of thestandard-put the
standard in your own words.
I think that this standard wants me to recognize the importance of consistent and meaningful
communication in order to establish and maintain a supportive, collaborative and participatory
classroom environment. This communication needs to be presented in various formats including
written, nonverbal and visual, according to the audience and purpose. This standard not only
addresses the need for educators to utilize effective and stimulating discussion prompts for a
variety of instructional purposes, but also states that an indicator of competence is
“communicate[ing] and challeng[ing] students in a supportive manner and provid[ing] students
with constructive feedback.” Effective communication must be modeled and consistently used to
support relationships and enrich learning opportunities.
2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding andapplication of the
standard.
The artifact I chose that demonstrates my understanding and application of the are notes that I
wrote to a particular student and his mother communicating the same idea: that his participation
in math not only is assisting in his own success but the success of his classmates. I wrote the

notes in order to start an incentive I created for myself to write positive notes home to students’
parents/guardians so that if/when I need to contact them about a negative behavior, the parent
will trust my opinion and take my concern seriously. I wanted to write this particular student a
letter that honored him for his effort and dedication and an accompanying note to inform his
parent about how impressed I was with his work. I believe that in writing two notes – one for the
student and one for the parent/guardian – I was displaying that I “understand the importance of
audience and purpose when selecting ways to communicate ideas.” I also know that in doing this
I was showing my competence in “communicat[ing] with students in a supportive manner and
“provid[ing] students with constructive feedback.”
3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how yourteaching will change in
the future to further meet the standard.
B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a classassignment, reflect upon how
your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.
The artifact has been used in my practice in that I have set a quota for myself to write 5 notes
home a week to develop and foster positive relationships with my students and their
parents/guardians. I have seen and heard from parents that they truly do appreciate the letters and
are impacted by the words and support provided in them. I have seen the benefits these notes
have had and I know that I will continue to write feedback to students and parents in my student
teaching and in future classrooms. In addition, I will utilize Bloom’s Taxonomy to ensure that I
am providing students with rich communication opportunities.
4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to

Teach and Learn in a
Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.
The artifact I have chosen has prepared me to teach and learn in a diverse society. I believe that
writing these notes home, especially to those students who are behaviorally a challenge or are
academically struggling, will allow me to enlist the support of parents in order to empower
students. Personalizing these notes will allow me to communicate with diverse audiences, and I
am prepared to use on-line translators to translate English to students’ home languages.
